I can only recall one occasion in which Sesshoumaru directly says that Inuyasha's mother was the cause of the inutaishou's death, and that was in the second movie. Mostly, Sesshoumaru claims that, because he fell in love with a human woman, the inutaishou was weak.
I'm curious, too, about why the inutaishou and Sesshoumaru's mother separated. If I were certain divorce had been a practice back in feudal Japan, I might even put out the guess that Sesshoumaru's parents divorced, but then I'd have to ask, Did the inutaishou actually marry either of the ladies who bore his sons?
Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha are many, many years apart. It's possible that the inutaishou and Sesshoumaru's mother drifted apart after awhile...or that the inutaishou fell in love with Inuyasha's mother and abandoned Sesshoumaru's mother. We may find out next chapter, or within the next few chapters.

You know, being a girl, I can't help but wish it was the other way around. That Sesshomaru's mother left Inunotaushou, for her own reasons. Unlikely scenario, but not entirely impossible.

That's possible. One could have left the other or, as I said before, the two could have just drifted apart. Humans' feelings for each other can change over a period of time (hence the existence of divorce). Why couldn't the same be true for youkai, as well?
But here is something else that occurred to me. Sesshômaru's mother knows about Tenseiga and, most likely, Tessaiga. One can assume the two swords were forged at the same time...which means they were forged after Inuyasha was born. So, what exactly was the relationship between the inutaishô and Sesshômaru's mother? Did they drift apart and remain friends? Did the inutaishô cheat on his mate?
Also, why did Sesshômaru seem resentful toward his mother? Does it have anything to do with his father's relationship with Inuyasha's mother? Does he feel his mother should have done something to prevent that relationship? Or did something else happen between Sesshômaru and his mother?

well, at last after nearly a decade of guessing, finally we have (or we r likely to have in the coming chapters) the real deal behind "fluffy's mother". believe me guys, i've heard some of the weirdest speculations 'bout her on the net, the commonest being she died in childbirth. but from what we see she's alive and q kicking. and she's q a fine ***** too...(whether that last sentence develops into a pun or remains a simple statement of fact remains to be seen, tho.) demo sesshoumaru wa sonna raikoku na hito ja...okaasan ga yasashii to douka omoimasen: but sesshoumaru is so cold-hearted, i somehow don't think his mom would be gentle:
as for inu taishou and her (once again we don't have her name, maybe ato de) anee-chan is q right. divorce was v much in the pic in medieval Japan, and if i remember correct the term was "okizari" or formal separation btn husband and wife. many of the contemporary haiku poets have used the term in their works.
