How often do you buy manga that you really wish you didn't?

Sometimes bad manga happens to good people.

Heh.

How often does it happen to me? Not too often anymore. I try to be really selective about what I get these days, not to mention I'm currently into a number of series so I don't have a lot of room in the manga budget to pickup and try something new just out of curiosity. Like I knew I'd dig Loveless and Rozen Maiden just because of the manga-ka and liking their previous work, so I had planned to get those titles before they ever got released and when I jumped on board I wasn't worried a bit about being disappointed.

The last couple of newer series I've allowed my curiosity to get the best of me and sample (impulse manga buying!) - Broken Angels and Enchanter - have turned out to be quite fun and I plan to stick with both of them! But yeah, I've made my mistakes along the way... Pieces of a Spiral, anyone? (As a rule, I just don't buy anything CMX does anymore - meh! After trying three of their series and being disappointed with all three, I just don't think they're the manga company for me.) But I've managed to resell the stuff I've tried and didn't like. And like I said, I do try to take my time in choosing a new series and research stuff that catches my eye before I plunk down cash on it. I'd been looking forward to Enchanter after seeing it on DMP's website, so I'd planned to try it out when I saw it in stores. Broken Angels had a good writeup somewhere that made it sounds like a series I'd enjoy. So a little research ahead of time keeps me from crying over spilled milk... er manga... er cash?

I bought the first volumes and never continued with:
- Mahoromatic
- Comic Party

I was disappointed with:
- Abenobashi
- FLCL

...both animes I loved very much, but was disappointed with the artwork and shortness (only 2 volumes!) of each of them. If I knew they were going to be that short, i probably wouldnt have started with them to begin with.

One that I am regularly suprised with how happy i am with it: Eiken. For a 2 episode OVA, it has a lot more content than I thought it would. and its decent, decent art, good characters. and eveytime i think its over, i see a new volume solicited for release. and I cant wait to buy it. :)

Gatekeepers will forever remain be the one manga "that scarred me for life". Ugh.

I brought this Japanese manga about a female doctor that was umimpressive and boring... And Sakurako Gokurakuin's newest manga, Sekirei, is a series that I'll never buy again...

nah, only one time...Ayashi no Ceres was horrible (the middle part was soooo boring).
there are several mangas whoch were very good, but only the first part (e.g.; Orphen, A.I.Hunter, Chonchu, Psychometrer Eiji...etc.). So those mangas are good but it's horrible not to know the end...:( (problem is, the author doesn't write more or it won't be released...argh :$%&#!: )

Sometimes. I rarely buy manga without having a good idea of the story anymore. It used to be fun to pick up random titles once in a while...but, after being disappointed with the stories 7 out of 10 times, I gave that up. Now, I'm very careful about what I buy...unless I'm almost positive that I'll like the manga and stick with it.

So...bad purchases? Well...I was disappointed with a few series like Girls Bravo and Kamichama Karin...but I got those two as gifts. :P As for things that I actually did purchase...I didn't care for Excel Saga (bought the first two volumes in the same purchase, and that was a mistake), Doubt!!, Mink, The Vision of Escaflowne, and many others that I can't think of at the moment.

Half of the time when I buy new manga, I end up hating it. I wish I hadn't ever bought these...

I've done it at least three times.

First was Fruits Basket. I'd heard some good things about it and bought the first volume. It was terrible. To this day I haven't read a worse manga, and that was quite a while ago.

The second one was Fushugi Yuugi. Didn't interest me. Then I bought the Vision of Escaflowne manga. That was pretty much crap, though the anime rocks.

The anime didn't really do the manga justice, in my opinion. But I've read all 7 volumes that have been released and I think this series rocks! But I guess we can't all like the same things, right?

I also am very careful now about what new manga I purchase. I've bought enough dud series to know that the really good ones out there are few and far between (at least for me). Some of these titles it took me quite awhile to decide that I didn't like them; literally it sometimes happens when I'm smack dab in the middle of book 5 or 6 and then say to myself, "Why did it take me so long to realize that this series stinks?" I wasn't very discerning at all when I first discovered manga - all I knew was that it was a new addiction that needed to be fed!

Anyway, here's mine:

-Negima (love Yue Ayase and many of the characters, but the story is blah)
-Zatch Bell (love Zatch, hate the stories)
-I"s
-Mouryou Kiden
-Fushigi Yuugi
-Here is Greenwood
-Cafe Kichijouji
-Noodle Fighter Miki
-Ultra Cute
-Hana Kimi
-Inuyasha
-Ranma
-Ones that I completed, but probably wouldn't again: Love Hina, AI Love You, Mahoromatic, Kill Me, Kiss Me, Mink, Galaxy Girl, Panda Boy (part of that Tokyopop Fruit series or something), Doubt!!!, and a few others I know I'm forgetting...

A few series that are going south quickly if they don't wrap up soon:

-Tsubasa
-Fruits Basket
-Cheeky Angel

It can work in reverse too - you see a title on the bookshelves, aren't impressed with its cover, and just make a superficial judgement on it and pass it over. That happened to me with Cromartie High School. If it hadn't been for Newtype magazine's ad for it, I'd never have discovered it and now it's in my top 5. ^_^

Tsubasa is still going strong at 15 volumes, with no end in sight, but a new factor in Volume 15. However, it does get better in Piffle World, because Fay (yes, it's the official spelling although I doubt del Ray would change it) in bell-bottom pants is a sight to behold. LMAO.

Fruits Basket, if you're following up on the thread here, is ending at 21-22 volumes. Although I quit it after learning which Tohru going pick was as I predicted...

I don't know much about Cheeky Angel, but I heard it doesn't get any better... *shrug*.

Haha. Didn't the words "Yaoi Manga" strewn across the bottom tell you this wasn't your typical manga? Lol, I read that one, too.

I've had a lot of disappoints in the manga department. Luckily, I stopped after the first volume for each of them.

Crescent Moon, Diabolo, Culdcept, Angel Sanctuary, Desert Coral, Cross, Cowboy Bebop, Chronicles of the Cursed Sword, Alichino, and Ragnarok all either bored or confused me. Now they just sit on my shelves collecting dust.

Rurouni Kenshin. Ewww.

Ragnarok. What the hell is the point of this thing?

Inuyasha. Takahashi needs to learn how to make good leads (Inuyasha and Kagome). Other than that I actually had no problems with the story at all save Kouga's sudden transformation into a good guy when he was clearly shown to be a sadistic killer at his debut into the story.

I rarely make a bad purchase because I usually know when I'll like it, but here's my list:

CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators vol. 1 (It just didn't have the CLAMP "feel" . . .)
Excel Saga vol. 1 (Anime was funnier)
Sakura Taisen vol. 1 (Why did I buy this?)

The Gundam SEED novels weren't bad, but I don't really like the way the battle scenes were written and will probably try to sell/return them.

EDIT: Okay, so I skimmed through this thread to see if I've posted in it yet. Now that I've finished the series, I'm taking RG Veda off of my list. I liked this series a lot more than I thought I would.

I really haven't gotten many manga series to say that I've made a bad purchase in them. I always consider saying such things to myself if its worth getting before I invest in a series. I guess if I got something that wouldn't appeal to me such a shounen with strong violent themes and/or with fanservice, I would regret getting it since I've always been more of a romance/drama shoujo kind of girl, but I know I wouldn't invest in such a series in the first place. The bottom line, I always research manga series before I invest in them!! ;)

Excel Saga Vol. 1-4 <-- I thought it would get better, but I found myself pretty bored. I like the Anime a lot more.
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Vol. 1 <-- It's pretty much the same as the Anime. I don't know, it was boring.
Ranma 1/2 Vol. 8 <-- I don't know how I got my hands on this. It was a long time ago and I needed something to read. Bad choice.
Dead End - Vol. 1 <-- This confused the hell out of me, although the concept was fairly cool. It just wasn't my taste.

I'm generally a lot pickier about my manga purchases than my anime purchases... I don't know why. To be honest, I don't know if I really have any that I regret, though. If there was one, though, it would be Shaman King Vol 1, not because I dislike it, but because I follow it in SJ, and never really bothered to pick up another volume because of that... maybe some day. In any case, usually I like most manga that I take the time to buy/read. Maybe I just have a completely different taste in or outlook on manga, because I've read some of the titles some people have listed and I loved them. *shrugs* Oh well.

Not too often...I wish I hadn't bought Inu-Yasha (too repetitive), Lament of the Lamb (creepy, but in an incest-y way, not in the horror story way I'd hoped), Gravitation (hated Shuichi), Ruroni Kenshin (mainly because I got it in Japanese...and then it got licensed...), and Magic Knight Rayearth (CLAMP is pretty...and nothing more). I say not too often because for every one of those that I named I've got about 3 series I like and have many volumes of, whereas I stopped buying the listed ones quickly in most cases.

a couple.. I recently gave some to my aunt to sell at her rummage sale and they sold relitivly quick

othelo vol 1- kinda rubbed me the wrong way, like reading a manga about semi skanky teenagers or something O_O; just seemed like it was borrowing too much from manga series like peach girl (which I liked better)

marmalade boy vol 2 - couldn’t get volume 1 so I got 2, kind of boring focused alot on tennis that volume which really bored me because I don’t really liked sports.

DNAngel vol 1- art looked really good but story was -_-.. stupidly i bought the first dvd of the anime thinking maybe some how that story had improved but it didn’t

happy lesson - boring generic harem stuff "only the time with teachers!"... which in now way made it any more interesting (did the same thing as DNAngel bought the anime as well thinking it would be better -___-;;; )

Nevermind my previous post from 2 years ago. I didn't think about my Fushigi Yuugi collection. I wish I didn't get the old flipped books (vol. 1 to vol. 8), because my entire FY manga collection looks uneven now. The first 8 volumes are flipped before VIZ decided to rerelease them smaller and unflipped. The other 10 volumes were released unflipped. I just don't have the time and money to invest on the first 8 volumes again unless I sacrifice my old books for a few bucks each at a Half Price Book store. I consider it a bad purchase realizing I should've waited knowing every other manga is sold smaller and unflipped and VIZ was going to do that eventually. >_<
