I believe Ichigo got his hollow side from when he absorbed Rukia's powers, but I don't believe she had the hou gyoku inside her yet. I'm not to sure...

Don't know it is a strong possiblity but he is the son, of a former captain though so he might have just gotten his powers from his dad instead of being Kaien's reincarnation or it could be both.

Well, the author of that page did state in the beginning that it was based on speculation and not official info. However, I do think it is a highly plausible theory! Before reading this, I merely thought of the whole Kaien incident as just a story to provide some info on Rukia's past, and I thought his resemblence to Ichigo was just coincidence. But now I'm convinced there is a much deeper connection between Kaien and Ichigo. When spirits die in soul society, they are reincarnated back on earth. Ichigo already had unusually high spirit power before he even met Rukia, which is why I believe he was born with hybrid Hollow/Deathgod powers. Add to that the fact that Kaien, a genius Deathgod, was merged with a hollow, and this interesting theory makes alot of sense.
However, we must remember that this is still unconfirmed info. All that has been revealed thus far is that 1. Ichigo always had his own deathgod powers 2. He has hollow powers (with unclear origins as of now) 3. He has a huge well of power that is potentially far greater than that of a Captain's (apparently due to being part hollow) 4. Yes, his "goofball" dad is actually a bad*** former captain deathgod. The rest of the questions concerning the mystery of Ichigo's vast power remain to be answered. More info on Kaien can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaien_Shiba)

Ichigo got his hollow side as a direct cause of the ordeal with the chain. Sandal-hat says so himself that if the chain is completely eaten through before you get your powers back you will become a hollow. Ichigo got both his shinigami power and his hollow power at the same time. Ichigo may be a reincarnation of Kaien or it maybe because Isshin might be a member of the Shiba family and is Kaien’s father and Ichigo has the same genetic make-up of Kaien. But Ichigo did not get his power from Kaien that much is sure.

So far, it seems that his hollow powers did originate from that ordeal. However, I'm not convinced that is the whole truth behind it, epsecially since that hasn't actually been stated by anyone in the story (at least not to my knowledge), and Urahara is also a VERY shady guy that hardly ever fully explains things to people. We do know for sure that Ichigo at least had his own Deathgod powers from the beginning, and at first it wasn't explained why, we just had to accept that fact. But now that it's been revealed that his dad's a deathgod, it gives rise to the possibility that he inherited them from him, but there could yet be another source behind their origin.
Urahara knew all along that Ichigo had his own deathgod powers. The question is, why did he choose such a risky method to awaken them? I can think of three possible reasons.
1. It was simply the only way to awaken them, and becoming part hollow was an unexpected result of Ichigo nearly becoming a hollow in the process. However, given the twists and surprises that Bleach tends to have, this just seems too obvious to me.
2. Urahara was deliberately trying to turn Ichigo into a Vizard (or akin to one) by having him undergo a transformation while reawakening his deathgod powers. This could very well be the case since he has alot of knowledge on merging deathgod and hollow powers. Both reasons 1 and 2 imply that Hollow Ichigo was simply born as a result of that ordeal, not because he was originally part hollow.
3. What if Ichigo actually did have hybrid hollow/deathgod powers all along. If so, Urahara would know this as he apparently knew a great deal about Ichigo's power early in the series, and also knows his father well. Early in the series, before he trained Ichigo, he stated that Ichigo has far greater potential than himself, a captain level deathgod. Was it because he knew all along he was actually a "Vizard", which are stronger than captains? So maybe Urahara put Ichigo through that ordeal because he knew it was the only way to awaken that hybrid power. If this is the case, then I think this Kaien-Ichigo theory would explain why he was born with hybrid powers.
Ichigo may be a reincarnation of Kaien or it maybe because Isshin might be a member of the Shiba family and is Kaien’s father and Ichigo has the same genetic make-up of Kaien. Another intriguing theory, especially since Ganju ressembles Isshin a bit, and roughhouses with Ichigo like him. Hmm...
But Ichigo did not get his power from Kaien that much is sure. But if he is in fact his reincarnation, wouldn't it make sense that he would retain his power too?

But now that it's been revealed that his dad's a deathgod, it gives rise to the possibility that he inherited them from him, but there could yet be another source behind their origin. Ichigo didn't always have shinigami powers just high spiritual awareness. He didn't get his shinigami power until Rukia stabbed him.
Urahara knew all along that Ichigo had his own deathgod powers. The question is, why did he choose such a risky method to awaken them? I can think of three possible reasons.Ichigo permanently lost any shinigami powers he had after being attacked by Buyakya that why there was a need for the ordeal Sandal-hat put him through. Because Ichigo got his power while he was still alive he was not a complete shinigami. He had to be in a state where he was dead to become a true shinigami. If Ichigo got his powers back before the chain was completely eaten he wouldn't have the hollow power at all.
But if he is in fact his reincarnation, wouldn't it make sense that he would retain his power too?No because Kaien was possessed. The hollow who possessed Kaien had that power to control other peoples body and to break a shinigami’s zanpaktou. The same hollow possessed his wife and she died after the hollow left her body. So in Kaien’s case it wasn’t natural, as a hollow had taken his body where Ichigo’s hollow powers came at a somewhat more natural process.

I highly doubt that ichigo is a reincarnation of kaien. Ichigos early powers of being able to see hollows and dead spirits came mostly likely and probably genetcally through his dad, thats why his sister(s) got them too. The only reason ichigo was able to awaken death god powers was because he stabbed himself with rukias blade to save his sister. Later on his powers were *in a word* cut off by Byakuya *(sp, its late), the only way urahara could re-awaken those powers was to put him through the whole hollow process. The actual powers were awaken after the 2nd test. He was able to get his own blade after the 3rd test( he learned his blades name was zangetsu) The hollow process was opposite because as urahahra says he fights against it. Thats why his mask came first. And urahara msost likely only wanted him to get his powers back because he needed that pill crap inside rukia safe, and ichigo was " the only one who could save it" Ichigo got his hybrid powers cause he got both hiollow and shinigami powers at the same time. Thats why had the mask on and the black clothing. He resisted again and broke the mask. But the hollow was inside him, just as zangetsu was inside him.
Well thats as far as my limited brain on bleach goes. I still need to ctach up episodes asnd manga

MAn that such a crazy theory, and seriosuly the guy probably posted it before it was revealed kurasakis father is a shinigami. And another thins, if ichigo is so much like kaien then why did neither Ganju nor His sister kaku or whatever not make the connection at all. Byakuya himself says the only rleation between kaien and ichigo is they look similar. And also, Rukia herself never makes any connection that ichigo looks like kaien, it is only assumed by her brother thats the reason why she likes him so much. the truth is if he did look so much like kaien she probably wouldnt have walked right by hime like she did in the first chapter/episode. I think whoever wrote that is jsut speculating way too much. Also i dont believe soul societt, huece mundu, and earth work of a reincarnation system in any way in this series. In fact i believe soul society was jsut a stop on the way to heaven. I guess in the anime they left out the part where byakuya is again reinded of kaie when ichigo says he would have fought against the rules.
Also the Grand -fisher himself also says " its no wonder that kid had so much power" when he meats with ichigos father in shinigami form.
