View Full Version : IGPX a commercial flop?

I was watching the Naruto show marathon on Cartoon Network's Toonami last night and they mentioned that it was being moved....and for some reason it bugged the hell outta me.
This mainly due to the fact the series isn't even over, it took a long break and the later shows were advertised as "Season 2". I doubt there is anything riske that would be shown on television if placed on a later timeslot....though feel free to correct me if anyone has seen the ones released on DVD uncut.
Does that mean it is safe to say that the IGPX experiement is a commercial flop? I mean, it really didn't take off as many people in the anime industry hoped, not to meation and it leads me to believe some corperate people heads will roll (namely the guys in Cartoon Network who helped made this show and who also pushed this to be a big success).
Anybody care to input their thoughts?

There is no doubt that it might have been a failure,or not as much of a hit as it was hoped/predicted.Ironic,it was flat out hyped in the start. But slowly, went out.I suppose none really liked it.
Im not sure if it was a hit in Japan,i dont know any sources in that sence.
Personally,i would have seen it.But it did not drive me to actually see it,i did other things. Is it a failure?I might think so,but i would like some proof before i say so.

Lots of shows get bumped around until they settle into their 'prime' time slot. Moving a show doesn't necessarily indicate (by itself) that the show is a flop. Most of the mainstays of American sitcom fame got bumped around a bit until they found their niche.
I think that the tepid reviews (slightly above average, but nothing more) that IGPX has received are more indicative of its consumer draw. Then again, I remember thinking it looked a dumed-down version of Rollerball with mecha; I hardly expected it to be much more than a bit of fluff. If this series was hyped at all, the hype probably exceeded the warmth of its reception among fans. If the ability of a series to match its hype is an indication of 'success', then I don't wonder that this series would be deemed a 'flop', whether it truly is one or not.
Rollerball with mecha, surfing mecha (Eureka Seven) - is it me, or is the mecha genre scraping the bottom of the barrel lately? ^_^

Ever since Toonami moved to Saturday nights it seems anime has always done not that great. Toonami doesn't even seem that popular anymore.
They should move it back to week days durring the afternoon, you know after kids get out of school. Instead of airing it just once a week at a late time.

Don't know if IGPX was a "flop" or not, but episodes 25 & 26 were not broadcast on Japanese television; the American release of the Cartoon Network version episodes on DVD was canceled after the first disc was released, Best Buy seems to be dumping the first IGPX DVD, and I know that IGPX DVDs don't sell well at all for us.

Oh, nostalgia. toonami's afternoon block back in 2000-2001 was 3 hours of heaven... and than midnight run...But those day's are gone.

They might as well cut their losses and release a complete collection brick. Robot Jox+Cyber Formula= disinteresting for most people. For me, it is made of win.

I think, though, that Cartoon Network, other things aside, has gotten really bad about randomly changing their lineup or timeslots with little to no notice. It's hard to even keep track of what shows air when and that can never be a positive thing for ratings and/or viewer interest.

I like IGPX and saw the whole 1st season on CN. When they showed that season 2 was going to be started I got really excited. Then when they said they were moving it to Friday's at Midnight...I got a little upset over that. Anyways IGPX is a really good show if you can actually get into it. ^_^

Have any of the people bashing IGPX actually seen it? Its nowhere near as bad as people on this site make it seem. Actually, outside of Naruto its the best anime in the Toonami block in my opinion. Of course, i'm 23 and Toonami is aimed at like 12 years olds.
The time they moved it to is an [adult swim] show. And adult swim is horrible for action anime. For some reason, the ratings are always low. Rather thats FMA, InuYasha, Cowboy Bebop, etc. When they post their ratings for Saturday, everything peaks around Naruto and then drops radically down once like 10:30 hits and gets worse and worse as the night goes on... and they don't start action anime till like midnight.
To me, thats the reason why their action block fails. They have alot of good shows but they all start at times when people are either going to bed or have already left to goto the club/hangout all night.

Not to mention the horribly inconsistent schedule. I don't stay up until 2:30 AM anymore (not since I graduated college and got a real job) but I even have a DVR and would have gladly recorded the programming until my heart's content but I found it so difficult to keep up with the scheduling that I eventually just gave up and either rented/bought the shows I was interested in or watched the fansubs.

I'm 24 and I love IGPX. I agree that it is one of the best shows in or was I mean one of the best shows in Toonami's line-up. They moved it to Fridays at Midnight on CN. >_< But I'll still watch it. ^_^

I actually like IGPX too and I'm 25. I even stayed up much later than normal when it was on at 11:30 or whenever even though I had to wake up really early. Toonami is becoming infamous for doing this to shows. Gundam Seed wasn't the massive hit they thought it would be so they stuck it in TV Hell with the .Hack shows and Cyborg 009. Hopefully IGPX won't go that same way though.

Probably, after IGPX 2nd season is over, they will replace it as soon as possible. That what happen to the other shows, when last espiodes finish no more repeat.
Kinda sad, I agree IGPX didn't make a big hit, but it was not bad.
I never understand why cartoon network would hype up this series in the first place. The mecha and sport genre are not that popular here and this would be a hybrid of the two.

The mecha genre is popular here, more so than most genres. Sports on other hand, not at all.

Shut up, you have Adult Swim now. You also have 5 times more fansubs than we had back in the 20th century, so it evens out.
IGPX rules. The cheaper the anime the better for me. I don't know why but it's like cheesy nachos. They are so low class and cheap but so good. I also liked Duell Masters and Zatch Bell. I guess growing up on the Robotech dubs makes you appreciate cheap television.

I've seen the show. I even tried watching more than two episodes, but I just couldn't do it. It just isn't that good. As for CN changing its timeslot, those ***holes always do that. Doesn't seem to matter if its popular or not. They move it around, delay showing more episodes (even while they show them in other countries; JLU anyone?). And for what? I don't see a point to it. What does continously changing timeslots and delaying further episodes do for the audience? Nothing as far as I'm concerned.
These days, I either buy it on dvd, or download it after it airs.
