I'm going to a convention in the fall, and I wanted to cosplay as Temari from Naruto, but I dont know how to make the shoes or fan. do you know of any places were I can buy those items?

I also dont know what type of fabric would be best to use for the main dress of the outfit.

A fan wouldn't be hard to make. All you need to do is to get a really large quantity of card, and paste together individual folded strips. You can make it from one large piece if you'd like, but I don't recommend it. You could then reinforce the whole with a couple of pieces of rigid material of your choice, and then pin the ends together to make a convincing fan.

Practice folding a fan from some scrap paper, first. Once you have the idea, you can start working on a large model. All you do is just fold the paper back upon itself in alternating directions, doing your best to keep the size of each fold equal.

thanks...didnt think of glueing paper together! but still, what about the shoes? I would probably have a hard time making them...

Making a fan has certainly got to be cheaper than buying one of that size! As for the shoes, it depends on how authentic you want them to look. If I recall correctly, they are just plain black shoes with an open toe, so I'd suggest that if you can find a pair of black flip-flops (I hope Americans call them that) then you could just wear a pair of black socks over them, and cut out the toes from the socks.

You'll need a couple of pieces of fish-net stocking to complete the look, of course, which might prove equally problematic. Once you cut it, it will start to fray, and quickly fall apart. I've no idea how you'd handle that.

Here is a tutorial I found last night for the sandals. It seems simple enough. I might just make a pair as well.

Read the bottom of page 8 first. Sand Village shoes are different from Konoha's.

To me it seems unnecessarily complex, as compared to just modifying a thick sock. The eventual result would be much the same.

Sure, it might be. It's not like it's my decision which method to follow anyway. There's no need to look at me that way. :P

I can definitely help here. I am an artist for most and I am also a free lance fashion designer. OKAY! These things are simple enough and I am glad to help.

There are several ways you can make a kick Arse fan. One way I thought was taking rigid materials and manipulating them to your likeing.

First thing you need to come up with is whether you want it to fold in or always stay out. ((AKA folding out like the images above all the time.)

TO have it folded out all the time This might be a good way to take on the task.

I would probably use double Ply foam or presentation board. You want the fan to be decently light so its easy to carry! Its also strong enough to stay stiff and not.

There are two ways you can think of the fan. You can keep it flat or actually have demension to it. I prefer demension just cause it adds something to it. I would definitely practice making a fan out of paper and figure out how many folds you want and how big you want it to your body. In the anime the fan is big enough to allow her to sit on it and glide. I would use a person as a reference to the actual size of the fan.

Once you figure that out with the knowledge of the folds cut strips of the board or stiff form and when you glue them make sure that they add demension Like if you looked at it from the top of the fan it would look like this ^^^^^^^^.

Once the fan is complete you will find that it looks funkeh. Now on the outside it may not look so good. Heres what I would do. I would use the cheap cotton weave you can get for two dollars a yard. The cheap stuff. Its durable, but comes in so many bright colors! I would then either sew a cover for it or glue the fabric to the board fan.

Now a problem might arise. I have honestly never glued fabric to board (if i needed something stiff with nice colors I would sew them tight enough to fit on the accessory). I would have a scrap piece of your board and a scrap piece of your fabric. There are many varieties of glue you can use to glue it. With your scrap pieces test out the best one. From what I found 3Mm Super 77 is the best for glueing fabric to other flat stiff mediums ( I researched it online). Do NOT use glue you think will buckle or wrinkle. This includes emlers. A spray glue will be the best. But when you use it make sure your in a well ventilated area or outside. THe fumes can kILL! Also make sure the glue gets on ONLY what you want too! Three to four layers should be plenty but let me tell ya the stuff gets sticky really really fast. So being careful and well planned helps!

Now a better fan would be to make one that looks authentic and functionable and that folds in an out. I have seen people who make them out of wood and what not. Which is something that might be kind of hard. However they might sell that ply wood or the really soft wood in order to cut it and make something but I dont think it would be durable enough for a large fan. Wood making is hard unless you know someone who knows how to cut them accurately and what not, sand them, and polish them too.

There is an alternative though. I messed around for a couple hours to figure out how to make one so you would have it. I made a little picture diagram. If you actually have a paper fan it will help you to understand how fans work. :) If anything... You can always buy a small one to see how it works. Hopefully though my diagram will help you. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v340/jamiesama/Untitled-2.jpg

In the long run though you can just by enough material to make a marterial fan and have nice wood ends that attach to fabric.

I tried to search for places you could get fans and honestly I think your going to have to make one. I hope this helps and if you have any questions about anything costume wise let me know ill try to help! :D and that goes for everyone.

Lesseeeee Material for her costume. Which one are you going to do? I like to sometimes mix materials so it adds a flare. Obviously you might need fishnet. Leg avenue from costume stores and Buycostumes.com will help a LOT! They have a lot different kinds of styles and costume stores also have the fishnet and what not.

I wouldnt go so fancy. I would use a nice cotton or even linen. Sometimes using some softer materials will make it look nice! Cotton again comes in ALOT of colors. :D Trimming I am sure you can mix and match with satin and other fine materials.

Her white outfit I would go with cotton. I would go fancier for her blue out fit . I would use cotton for the white bust part and satin double sided ribbon for the halter part of it. Heck even really nice rop strip out of vinyl or something would look good too. Underneathe I would definitely use satin. teh HOTTNESS! XD THe red Wasit cloth I would have fun with too. Maybe satin, cotton, or a type of chiffon or taffeta or something. :D Be creative. The choice for a cosplay costume really makes a difference if you have a vision for the use of materials. Material on a costume can make it or break it. Get some fabric swatches from your local material stores and mix and match them to figure some things out and what not. :)

Again I hope this helped

I am planning on using this tutorial (http://www.freewebs.com/iron_chef_cosplay/tut01.html) for the ninja shoes. The final product looks really nice. I wouldn't suggest buying shoes on eBay.
