View Full Version : The future of Naruto DVD's

When I watch a series fansubbed and I enjoy it, I always buy the DVD's when it gets licensed and released in the US, that of course is my way of supporting the industry. Naruto is one such title; I like it, so I will buy the uncut box sets as they are released (I don't watch anime dubbed, so I won't bother buying the dub only versions). I was just thinking that, assuming Viz continues to release 13 episode uncut box sets for all of Naruto, once we get to the 11th box set, we'll have 5-6 box sets in a row of all filler episodes released. Now, I don't enjoy filler in the least; I'm not a purist or anything, I just think filler material sucks for the most part, and Naruto is no different; even though I HAVE been watching all of the Naruto filler episodes, I find most of it annoying and frustrating to watch. I'm not exactly looking forward to the filler being released here, and I doubt I'll buy those box sets that contain all filler.

Even though I want to do my part of supporting the industry by investing in a title I enjoy, I find it hard to justify doing so for a long stretch of episodes I don't like in the least. What are your thoughts? Will you purchase the DVD's including the filler episodes when it gets to that point?

This is what got me debating on whether I should actually invest in this series or not. I have never seen Naruto, but it looks like something I would enjoy greatly. I don't mind filler if it's decent filler. However, I've heard from fans that Naruto has a ridiculously large amount of it. I'll still buy the filler sets if I like the anime enough. I like to have things complete.

I think Viz could do so much better if they would release in it in chunks or around 50 episodes. The wait is the thing that is gonna kill me. I can't download the fansubs because bittorrent won't work on my computer (don't know why, either). I am afraid I will get tired of waiting and lose interest, then feel like I wasted my cash. Viz seriously needs to release the sets more often, or release bigger chunks.

DazzleKitty, did you realise that the percentage of filler episodes and manga-based episodes could soon approach 50:50 at this rate? They've just confirmed another batch of filler too. I'm not buying that much filler. Not ever. I didn't download it, either. Once I realised how bad it was sucking, I just quit watching.

I'm just planning to pretend that part of the anime doesn't exist.

same for me.

what really scares me though, is their 3-4 month release schedule. its going to be around five years before we get to where the anime is now. i didnt do the math yet, but 13 episodes every four months? thats what, maybe 40 episodes per year? yikes! :(

I believe the dub only dvds will be going monthly in the near future. Forget the exact disc that this will start with. But expect the sets to start releasing quicker at that point, also. If you can make the search function at AOD work for you, you might be able to find the thread with the info in it.

13 Episodes every 4 months = 39 episodes per year.

13 Episodes every 3 months = 52 episodes per year.

The current episode is somewhere in the 190 range. It's going to take a minimum of four years to get to where we are now, and that's if they release them as fast as possible. The maximum is indeed closer to five years. By that time, if Naruto keeps up a relentless weekly schedule, we will be a minimum of 200 episodes further down the line, which will take another five years to release.

It's not unlikely there could be another 200 episodes. Bear in mind that Kishimoto refers to everything prior to the next manga arc as "Naruto: Part One". It is arguable that "Naruto: Part 2" represents a similar point in the story to that of the Saya-jin Saga in Dragon Ball. Including filler, there were 300 episodes of Dragon Ball Z, starting from the Saya-jin Saga.

We're probably not going to see any end to this franchise on dvd for a long time. Our children may be watching Naruto by that point.

Sweet, thanks for the news guys.

Part of me still wishes the dub only's didnt exist at all, but I guess the fact that they even exist should make me thankful that we're getting an uncut release at all.

Ya know, other than Naruto's voice, I thought it was a great dub. Much better than that which most Shounen Jump anime gets. I've only had a chance to see a little of it, but I've been told that even Naruto's voice actor grows into the part.

Think of it this way. If the dub only singles didn't exist, we'd be getting unedited singles with a max of 4 episodes on average @ $25 a pop rather than mini sets. It'd be no more episodes per year, and it would be costing more. So those dub dvds are actually doing us a favor. ^_^

the part that bother's me most is the edited scenes. when it first came to CN, i tried watching an ep, looking forward to the scene where Naruto stabs his hand to bleed the wound to get the poison out. when they ignored the hand and made an awkward zoom on his face, they lost me. :(

Good point :D

That's not the fault of the dub... it's because of regulations about what you can and cannot show during children's programming on the TV. Naruto is classed as childrens programming. I'm pretty sure the uncut DVDs also feature an uncut dub, and that's the dub I've seen, for the most part.

oh yeah, i wasnt blaming the dub. i know its because of regulations and such. i just happen to not like those regulations. :)

and in conclusion, which is why i am anxious for the Uncut DVDs. :)

Yep, same here. I stopped watching around episode 160. Someone tell me when the fillers stop.

Without a shadow of a doubt, I will buy it all, filler or no filler. My favorite part of the series was a filler arc (eps 148-151) in fact. Not to say that I'm happy they've had nothing but filler for the longest time, and I'd love to see it end and have the series get back to the main story too, but I still enjoy the filler. It's getting old having only filler (and so much of it at that), but it's still enjoyable, at least IMO. And it's still part of the anime, one of my favorite anime at that. I want it all.

You guys do realize if you don't like you don't have to buy it, right? Naruto is actually doing you a favor by putting the majority of its filler in one main continuous arc. It's not interwovern through the cannon like it is in Inuyasha. So if you want- just buy upto episode 133 then start off when Part II starts. You may get 1 or episodes of filler but it saves you the problem of having to pay for all of it.

I've caught a few episodes. It's not the sort of series I'd ever need or even want to own. Maybe I'll rent some of the better arcs in a few years, when they've got enough of it released. It's an okay title, I suppose, but supporting some of it someday is about all the interest I have in it. It'll be one of those "rent the next disc when I need a break and don't want to think" titles, like YYH and DBZ.

Well said...Brill I'm a huge fan of the ninja arts and other that "Ninja Scroll" guys correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't really seen any other good animes that focused on the world of the shinobi....well maybe black lion and that's about it. Although it gets tiresome at times you have to realize the fillers play a intrical part in the story, especially in the early stages in which we get to see how they live on a day to day basis, how naruto develops on routine missions etc... Filler or no filler I think it's a pretty good series. I recently bought ep. 149-172, mostly filler, so what I still loved it. ok, ok, let me get off my soap box...LoL

I dare not listen to it. My siblings have heard it, and while they generally prefer sub over dub, they're still fairly open to trying new dubs, especially my brother, who was pretty patient with this, and yet it still really annoyed him. From what I've heard my siblings say about what the voices are like, it would probably drive a thorough purist like me over the edge. X_X The prounciation also sounds overall very mediocre (sounds like some pronounce most names pretty well, others suck badly), which is a big nit-pick of mine. And after Inuyasha's dub, I don't trust Viz's ability to get that stuff right. X_X

But, I'm sure it could be worse, and like I say, if other people like it or watch it that way, that's fine. I don't have to.

But a note to you: buy the uncut box sets. I can't recommend it enough. It sounds like they got excellent releases, and it has uncut for both Japanese and English, and trust me, the Japanee cast does an incredible job.
