Is there a translator online that can translate English to the Japanese pronunciation (i.e, Watashi wa etc. instead of the characters?). I want to communicate with the locals here, and come Monday, I'm going to request to take Japanese classes. Turns out the girls here like you a lot more when you can speak their language. ;)
Thanks,
-D

Leave it to you Dusty to try to learn the lingo so you can hook up..lol!
Anyway, ask Mel..or any number of folks in here will probably help you out in that dept of learning my native language.
But remember this..Okinawans have a totally different dialect than the mainland Japanese people do. So..what some might teach you..may not sound right to the native Okinawan people in their own dialect..get what I'm saying?
Good luck.

Guys are like guys everywhere hun..they could care less if you can speak their lingo perfectly or not. More than likely, they'd snicker at anyone attempting to speak their language (if it was a guy doing it)..but if an american girl tries..then the boys usually clam-up and blush and get all nervous-like..and they do alot of smiling and nodding their heads like bobble-dolls..(at least that's what I remember of the male species of my culture.)

Yeah, I know what you mean about the accent. I hear lots of "ne's" at the end. Might as well give myself something halfway productive to do. ;)

Come on, you can't be fully serious that this will happen even when the guys know the lady has 0% interest in them and just wants to speak their language and that's it.
Maybe I'm too mexican for my own good, but guys here didn't and in my eyes still don't act that way when I speak to them in my funny accented spanish.

^I think kiyoumi was talking about japanese guys.
In general, guys are not much concerned about that, its the other stuff........
But you might want to keep it(the fact that you understand their language) a secret for a while, just to see if they are saying anything disrespectful behind your back.

Sailornyanko..I was only talking about the japanese boys..at least back in the day when I was growing up in Japan, that's how they acted whenever an american girl would try talking to them in japanese.
In this day and age however, I don't really know how they might act. It has been 26 years since I've been back to my native country.

Why didn't you learn Japanese before you went to Japan?

'Cause me going to Oki was kind of a "spur of the moment" thing.
Ssgt: "Hey Larson you wanted to go overseas somewhere right?'
Me: "That's right staff sergeant."
Ssgt: "3rd MARDIV, Okinawa, Japan. Good to go?"
Me: "Oorah."
And that's why I'm here.

ahhh yes..the good old days of "pack up..ship out" in less than 48 hours notice.
Least, that's what it was like for us in the Air Force.
Now my eldest son is in the AF, and he had one week notice that he was being shipped back home. One week to call TMO to get his stuff shipped, out process the base and get medical clearance to leave. They did that to him on a Friday...the following Friday, he was on a plane heading back to the motherland.
Wonderful world of the military...
Semper Fi (sp?)..oorah.

Hurry up and wait. That's the philosophy. Works pretty alright for getting things done, at the expense of some on-edge and PO'ed troops. ;)
They (medical) back in the states almost made me take up leave days for staying an extra week just because my wisdom teeth weren't pulled. I kept harrassing the staff there, and they just let me go on leave, under the condition that I promised to get them pulled by the time I got overseas. I did, had a wonderful week of bleeding mouth and got it overwith. Happy ending.

That converts kanji to romaiji. It won't help you to learn, though.

Off subject, but I just got my first tat today. The symbol for "nothingness" or "empty" on my right shoulder, at this Okinawan cat's house named Blue. He's very quick and easygoing about it, and not a bad deal for $20.
And I know what people say..."don't get Asian symbols because for all you know it might mean 'truck.'" Well, F them. It's been okay'ed by different sources.

F them? Whoa, dude, take a chill pill or somethin'. It'd be funny if your tattoo was 把, which means...yeah, I won't go into that.

Don't mind Dusty. Just a phase for the lad.

Well it's an enjoyable phase, 'cause I'm getting another. That's right, I said it. Not like one of those nerd kids that think "ooooh, Japan is coolness, I'm gonna get a random symbol!" 'Cause, now, I actually am in Japan, muhahaha!
Edit: Dude, aren't you only a year older than me? Get off your high horse.

Oorah? Is that like Hooah?

Umm, would that translate the same as it would be in America though? Haha, either way, uhh... at least now we know?
I saw a site on this (Kanji/Hanzi tattoos) a while ago. It said something to the effect of, "imagine some asian guy walks up to you with "FIRE!" tattoed on the middle of his head. What would your impression be?

I just looked it up and it seems that it's like Hooah, except it's marines that normally say Oorah.

As soon as you stop offending me (and others too with what I've seen) with your obnoxious way of posting that mangles thinking. And age doesn't matter; I've known many 15-yr olds who were smarter than 25-30 yr. olds.

Loopy, how'd I offend you? Half my posts are meant to be taken with a grain of salt and/or a chuckle, not seriously. The other half...I mean sincerely. I have to post the way I do, otherwise the "holier-than-thou argumentative anime gods" will stomp all over me. For example, somebody trying to imply their more "mature" than me based off my opinion of a tattoo I got. WTF? Please tell me that doesn't need to be justified in some way, shape or form by me.
(edited)
Edit 2: Chousou, I feel that's a biased example. Now, imagine an Asian guy going into a place with the word "empty" or "nothing" on his right shoulder. I'd think that to be pretty pimp. But I'm a white guy with "empty" or "nothing" on my right shoulder, in Japanese. Not much of a difference.
