 The Japanese people view food as sort of a euphoric, meditative kind of time..they really enjoy their food and savor every flavor. They don't just gulp it down and run..they take their time to sit and be happy that they have such good food to eat. Great resturants in Japan..everywhere you go..you run into an eatery.

*almost there*

Really? I haven't found the portions to be any bigger than back home (the U.S.) and in many cases, smaller (though ramen does come in a rather large bowl....).

In my hometown, Kumamoto..I can't go anywhere without getting these humungo portions of food on my plate..maybe it's just ME..since I'm tiny and think that all food portions are rather huge to begin with. *shrugs*

Funny with how tiny a lot of Japanese people are. I frankly find the portions served at american restaurants to be WAY TOO MUCH. Who can eat half a pounf of french fries everyday anyways without getting fat?

when they say "super size it" they are probably translating "oomori" 大盛り which literally means "big heaping." i remember the days when yoshinoya actually used to serve beef bowls and you could order an "oomori." mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

When I was in america, I was shocked to find out I can't buy small coffee. It was medium, large and jumbo. So I bought medium, ended up throwing it in the garbage b/c it was so awful.

Yeah, LostCause..now a "small" is a "medium" and a "medium" is a "large..and..oh hell..it's getting to be so dang confussing, that I'd rather just bring my own carafe of coffee with me where ever I go..makes it easier.

And I do not frequent the buffet places..because that's a terrible waste of money for me..I never can finish what little I put on my plate as it is.

America for sure, has an abundance of eateries...

But have you seen the vending machines in Japan?? They're selling all kinds of crazy stuff in there now! Pretty soon..you'll probably get a "car" in one of those machines.. :P

^that "medium" would qualify as large in another countries.
I remember vending machines, I'm guessing they have progressed somewhat since last time I visited. But plastic food displays in the eateries were weirdly convenient. (when you don't speak or read japanise).

Yes, I love how they do those plastic foods on display in the cases out front of the resturant..they look so real! (and yes..I'm way too easily amused..)

But those displays do help the tourists know what they're getting if they decide on a particular food from the virtual menu.

The portion sizing here definitely isn't excessive. If anything, I'd like it to be bigger.

I always smile when I go to a Starbucks in China. The menu is listed in both English and Chinese - the English version has their silly names like 'tall' and 'grande', but the Chinese version next to it translates the sizes as 'small', 'medium' and 'large'. It's refreshing to see that Chinese people don't stand for unnecessary ******** ^_^

well i loved ramen , last time i was in japan ..... i gulped down two bowls of ramen once :P

but still my all time ultimate food would be the stuff i get here ....

Chicken Tikka (barbq'd chick with red chillies and various spices) + beef kababs + some chicken biryani (rice dish with extremely hot spices and chicken marinated into rice) and then topped off with some mint sauce (mint along with some 'garam masala' and yougurt) :P

now thats the stuff ...... ^_^
