View Full Version : Platinum transcripts, and more!

(I suppose this isn't any more illicit than a lot of the other things we swap around here... but Dr. Nick has recommended against making this available in the Omake section of the FGC site itself.)
We've finally got a full collection of Platinum transcripts, thanks to Dr. Nick and his own OCD symptoms. He just emerged from the Gates of Mordor one day and dumped them all in my lap. These will inevitably be tweaked (to have all speaker names comply with the official script, and so on), but they are more than usable, so here you go! And make sure you DO use them, since these translations are a lot better than the LTPs everyone has.
Platinum Transcripts, Episodes #01~26, #21'~#24' (Ver. 1) (http://www.evacommentary.org/omake/transcripts_platinum_v1.zip)
We want to get all of Platinum's predecessor -- termed "Collection", since the DVDs are labeled "Collection 0:#" -- but that means somebody has to provide subtitle rips for Dr. Nick to work from. (If nobody pitches in, that's yet *another* thing Reichu has to do...) Here's what's processed so far:
Collection Transcripts, Episodes #01~#05 (Ver. 1) (http://www.evacommentary.org/omake/transcripts_collection_v1.zip)
Dr. Nick and I (but mostly Dr. Nick) have also tackled some of the EoE fansubs, for the sheer hell of it. We've even got a transcript of a Rebirth (a bonafide REBIRTH) fansub that no one attached any credits to. (Oh noes! Anonymous strikes again!)
Fansub Transcripts (Ver. 1) (http://www.evacommentary.org/omake/transcripts_fansubs_v1.zip)
The Mangle subs are upcoming. (I'll get those translator names for you, Doctor... :computer starts crashing: ...later.)

:gratuitous bump:
Only 49 hits? No replies? Goodness gratious. I thought more people would have actually been interested in these things, especially considering all of the effort that went into them. The Platinum subs are more accurate than the LTPs -- they should now be considered the "standard" for script citations in forum antics. You don't have any more excuses not to be using them! :P
Just a little grumpy. The thread I made on EoE video quality the day before this one has gotten over 15 times as many hits, and that wasn't supposed to be any kind of momentous occasion. Guess I didn't make the title for this thread eye-catchy enough.

I think you have better things you could be doing with your time -- yes. Dr. Nick will be pleased to handle the Collection ones; he just needs the subtitle rips.

Apart from "Thank you", there's not much to say. A better measure would be the server logs to see how many times the file gets d/l'd (thought I FTP'd my copy).

I did have subrips of the original ADV releases, as well as Manga's DaR and EoE. But they are from a reformat ago, should be able to pick them up of my backups but can't gurantee it. I'll check this evening after work.

I was going to post when I finally did download them (I'm catching up on a number of things I've missed while away, such as fansubs, scanlations, music releases, etc, and as a result, I'm losing tons of free space on the HD). I'll get to DL'ing it sooner or later, though. :P

Ho hum, looks like I did trash the originals, sorry. The scripts I actually use with my R2 Renewal are based on them (after noting the LTP's had a bit too much stress on the L), but they are tweaked to my liking (not least Anglicised all the spellings, hooray for armour with a 'u' ;)).

Hi, kids. Mangle's EoE subs have been completed, so Reichu should upload them soonish. Some other random notes:
These will inevitably be tweaked (to have all speaker names comply with the official script, and so on), but they are more than usable, so here you go!
The transcripts for episodes 01-04 of course already comply with the FGC script, so those should be nearly perfect. The plan with the rest is, whenever a new episode translation is completed and added to the site, I will fix the speaker designations. In other words, the subtitle collection will be finalized pretty much the same time as the Commentary itself. :P But I know you guys love quality.
Meanwhile, I would greatly appreciate if people used this thread to report any possible problems with the text files. So, if you find lines that do not correspond with what you see on your screen, or find Ritsuko speaking Maya's lines etc., let me know. Also, because my character recognition program is not without its flaws, there might be places where capital Is might have been replaced with lowercase ls:
SHINJI:
Dad, today l'm going to bury you!!!
I've tried to hunt these down with my text editor's search and replace command, but some might still remain.

Ho ho ho, I think I've identified the "unknown" Rebirth fansub: it uses almost exactly the same translation as animedivx's ep. #25'. There are a handful of small differences: honorifics have been axed from the latter (though this is not consistent), and it talks about "nuclear missles" instead of IRBMs. Some of Kyoko's lines have now been actually subbed, too.
The last one-third of Air that's not in Rebirth is of course original material. There are some amusing translation screw-ups, though nothing as funny as "12 quadrillion volts of power in the AT Field".
And as a relatively random note, do you know what this screencap (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/Dr-Nick/NGE/snapshot20060704230701.jpg) requires? A fishing rod. A Photoshop challenge has been issued!

Now we just need "Death". (My, won't dealing with Masayuki's ADHD be fun?) I'll set aside some time to induct myself into sub-ripping.

Unless there end up being problems with the FGC one.

Knowing me, too, if I need to quote passages for forum stuff, no ambiguous speaker designations will be safe. "Oh noes! I can't quote this unless I know THE TRUTH!!!!"

Huh, interesting. So your theory is that #animedivx released both, and used a tweaked version of the preexisting "Rebirth" stuff for #25'? I'd been considering earlier that the "Rebirth" fansub I found (on DC++, with its original release filename wiped out for the typical generic one) might have been split off from a full "D&R", and the credits to the subbers were at the beginning of "DEATH".
So, are we confident enough about this to credit the "Rebirth" to #animedivx (but provide the disclaimer that it's technically 'theoretical')?
I also need to put up a ver.2 of the fansub ZIP already -- Dr. Nick's given me #animedivx's #26', and I realized (only now) that I put their #25' in there, twice. -_-;
I wonder if we might want to provide more specifics in the transcripts sometime. For example, when I saw "5lutty housewives...Sexually Transmitted Diseases...", I did a double take. "Whoa, what the hell in the movie did they translate to get tha-- Oh." Not a critical matter ATM, though. (Probably.)
Oh yeah... And most people haven't seen the actual "Rebirth", have they? We definitely gotta torrent it sometime, since it's the weirdest thing in the world, at least if you've watched the corresponding part of #25' at least thirty times. Possibly less.

I say we keep the file name as it is, but add a disclaimer in the beginning. Invent me something, you're better with those things.

Can you wait till I've processed all of the movie scripts? The EoE files have undergone some slight tweaking (there was one speaker mix-up plus other less significant problems), so it would be nice if you could re-upload them in one go.
And what about that ancient Chinese (?) "side dish" fansub Shin-seiki has, should I transcribe that as well?
I wonder if we might want to provide more specifics in the transcripts sometime. For example, when I saw "5lutty housewives...Sexually Transmitted Diseases...", I did a double take. "Whoa, what the hell in the movie did they translate to get tha-- Oh."
Again, that's something you would need to do: since I don't know any Japanese, I can't really describe other people's translation screw-ups.
What IS the deal with that line (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/Dr-Nick/NGE/naughty_housewives.jpg), anyway?
@ Ornette: Great work, though for some reason I find the version with no fishing line to be indescribably more funnier.

Gendo: "What on earth are you talking about, woman?"

"Comedic value is the justification. There are no other factors to consider."*
But, would need to get it from him first... Shin-seiki hoards this crap like nobody's business, and he has no qualms about proclaiming so. But, strangely, he hasn't said anything about contributing to the Collection. SCOTT YOU HORRIBLE MAN YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!!!
My sister also has an ancient somethingth-generation EoE fansub -- made from the legendary Genesis edition, not the theatrical edition. If the VHS tape hasn't totally died, and I ever feel REALLY bored... that can always be added, for the sake of completeness. Someday.
What IS the deal with that line (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/Dr-Nick/NGE/naughty_housewives.jpg), anyway?
First three kanji (are the right) are for "gynecology"; the fourth (barely visible) looks like it could be making it 産婦人科, or "maternity & gynecology department". The two on the left are for "venereal disease". Uhhh... hmm.
Clearly, this means that Kaworu was a woman who got venereal diseases from that player Keel Lorenz! Death is the only true freedom from syphilis!!

The only illicit digitized versions of those eps I have are the A2000A ones, sadly.
The material in that DeusX fansub isn't original -- it's just LTP + bb, if the credits are any indication. But I actually do have transcripts of the "hybrid version" used to subtitle the NPC episodes lying around. (Got them off the Scarlet Pimperwigs, eons ago.) Albeit somewhat ugly transcripts.
This reminds me. You know what NGE needs? A "Backstroke of the West" version. That would be the greatest thing evar.

Eternal immortalization would require at least one post to /b/, something which I am hesitant, and honestly a bit fearful, to do.
Perhaps momentary immortalization in /a/ would suffice.
Either way, Go Hikari! gets the first (and maybe exclusive) pics.
What held you back?
I 'spose something like this could be filed under the "and more!" in "Platinum transcripts, and more!".
Truth is, I knew it would involve several PMs, and if I was going to bug you for advice/info (which some sites charge a bit for) I wanted to do some more research. If I didn't, it would have been a little like going, "So... I'm getting this thing done. Um... what should it look like?"
That and I figured with a little more under my belt, I could still learn something and you wouldn't be irked about having to teach me Japanese: 101.
On that note, expect a PM in the near future, and thanks in advance.

Thanks a bunch, Rachel. ^^ Just stared watching, and was rather surprised at how the subbers translated Keel's line near the beginning... "Lilith's only child". Far more accurate than the "clone" stuff that often gets batted around with that line.
I don't remember the "anime-ish" stab/slash sound effect being in EoE when the one NERV guy gets stuck in the back.
As much as I like the track they replaced it with in EoE, the use of "Angel Attack" while the JSSDF are slaughtering people really makes for an interesting parallel (and a rather ironic one, too, since the JSSDF soliders are far more brutal than any of the Angels ever were).
The use of "Infantile Dependace, Adult Dependancy" (is that the name? I can't remember... the surreal-sounding one with the organ and bells that was used during the TV ending episodes) for the scene where Misato was explaining the Second Impact and stuff to Shinji while driving by the Eva-00 prototypes was nice... I wonder why they took that out.
Lots of the random JSSDF dudes have completely different voices! O_o
You're right about Kyoko not making any sounds (I think maybe I hear a low growl once, but it's hard to tell... it might just be that weird "straining" noise the Evas make when they move)... at least not through her Eva larynx. Her soul makes some CREEPY-*** sounds during the "I don't wanna die" scene that I don't remember being there in EoE.
Funky sound effect when the harpies' wings open!

The Eva are made of the same body as I am.
Because I am born from Adam as well.
I could merge with them, if only they didn't have souls.

Bunshin is a tricky one, and I've possibly been talking out of my arse about what it means/implies. But "clone" isn't an accurate rendition, true.
You're right about Kyoko not making any sounds (I think maybe I hear a low growl once, but it's hard to tell... it might just be that weird "straining" noise the Evas make when they move)...
It's the sound of very big muscles.

I think the sound you're referring to is supposed to be a crying baby. (That's what I thought it was, and, sure enough, that's scribbled down for "SE" in the storyboards.) That whole scene is totally different, aurally. And the cut with Kyoko taking Asuka's hand isn't even present yet!
All of Asuka's dialogue (that I noticed) was rerecorded. There is an incredible difference in performance if you compare before and after, IMO. Erk, no contest. And making Kyoko herself roar and grunt adds so much. AHHHHHhhhh.
Was it just me, or was the timing for Shinji's wank session different? I should check the numbers. (Can you males really do it that fast? Eep.)

Bunshin is a tricky one, and I've possibly been talking out of my arse about what it means/implies. But "clone" isn't an accurate rendition, true.
That word has been used to describe a child that was made from an asexual parents' flesh, at least that's how Rumiko Takahashi saw fit to call Naraku's "incarnations"(Inuyasha, ya know, inu youkai, ears, Adult Swim), as the translations go. Seems fitting. These particular bushin within IY were certainly not clones.
All of Asuka's dialogue (that I noticed) was rerecorded. There is an incredible difference in performance if you compare before and after, IMO.
I noticed that with many of the other characters(some were definatly the same though), a difference in performace. None seem to downgrade at all...though Shinji, as I watch the two scene comparativly seems a bit louder in Rebirth during his split second wanking (could very well be possible, but then, I'm no Japanese boy.)
Was it just me, or was the timing for Shinji's wank session different?
That's because the vitals monitor and the panning to the locked door were slower in EoE. Lots of pans in EoE went slower(for example, the scene of Rei bathing in LCL was 7 seconds in Rebirth, and about 16 seconds in EoE), it kept going out of synch between the two players.
And making Kyoko herself roar and grunt adds so much. AHHHHHhhhh.

After too much Monty-Python one dark eve, long ago, I made a fan-sub, for platinum episode one. It wasn't pretty (http://obsessivemathsfreak.org/stuff/eva/nonsense/evasspere_eps01.srt).

Other than the different translations and the poor video quality, what am I missing from the Manga DVD that I am now seeing here. I don't see much of a difference other than what's above.

Okay hunnies, I've finished transcribing the ancient Animemovies fansub version of D&R. Reichu should upload it (along with new, fixed versions of many, many files) hopefully soonish, once some post-editing is done.
This was probably one of the worst fansubs I've ever seen. Seriously, the translation was absolutely awful, sometimes almost "Backstroke" level gibberish. Here are some sneak previews:

This is kinda funny, when taken out of context like this:

Okay, *****es! Update your files...*
Fansub Transcripts (Ver.2) (http://www.evacommentary.org/misc-files/transcripts_fansubs_v2.zip)
Platinum Transcripts (Ver.2) (http://www.evacommentary.org/misc-files/transcripts_platinum_v2.zip)
Please report any eggregrious errors. Thank you.
* That includes you, Dr. Nick. I actually revised a couple of the Platinum scripts myself: "Kaji" in #07 --> MAN ON PHONE, Kyoko and Papa Langley to the rather boring MOTHER and FATHER, + other Asuka flashback crap, and stuff.

I totally forgot to mention this before (sorry...) but in the second part of ep22', would it be worth while to note who's voice is actually saying the repeated scene?
ASUKA:
I'm Asuka Langley Sohryu. Nice to meet you.
What are you, stupid?
This is my chance.
So look at me!

All of the other female Va's are saying her lines, and I think that's important to note imo. It's like a different approach to showing hoe she feels others see her, in her own words. (wheras Shinji's experience with how he feels others feel about him are echoed especially through the "phone calls" in '20 and 25/6.(forgot which one.)
Sorry, I know that wasn't directed at me. >.>;
