This is a special edition, not a pre-order bonus. The SE is $10 more. The DVD will be packaged with the game.

The only thing that interests me is the art gallery and that can easily be found on teh intarweb, unless its a book or something. That will easily seal the deal for me.

Blech... I had preordered FFXII over a year ago at my local EB, but now I have to go and exchange that preorder for the LE version before it's too late, otherwise I'll be stuck with the regular version...

If it offered something interesting, whether it was a poster, art book, figure, whatever then maybe, although those don't interest me much either. I think the only SE item that'd make me get it is if it altered the game, like added a special battle or something.

The added extras sound OK. But not better than the 3S package that was released in Japan about two years ago. The extra DVD had some tournament footage from Super Battle Opera. One of the best SE's ever. Then there was the Hyper Street Fighter 2 SE which contained a History of Street Fighter DVD.
I'll probably get that FF12 SE.

The item will probably be massively produced and practically worthless in any additional value. I'm thinking it will be akin to the Halo 2 LE.
But to be perfectly honest, I love my little Halo 2 tin, so at an extra $10, why not? A decent chance the packaging will be prettier and there'll be something in there that might actually occupy me for a couple minutes, not to mention some chance no doubt exists that it may be a collector's item one day (even if I am thinking slim to none). I got $10 to blow, so it can't hurt.

Actually the person sitting down is a guy. Larsa is the first male in any anime or game that has confused me. And why should Vayne be behind him? He looks menacing which is fitting since he's the bad guy.

For some reason I never understood that with American covers. All the FF Japanese games always had the simplistic covers while we had to get the cinematic covers. I guess its the marketing. They probably figure that no one will pick up the game because no one will know what they're getting. Or maybe its because America likes complicated crap on their covers.
So far the three best covers for any PS2 release in the U.S. have been GT4 and both Katamari games.

Marketing. People see box "ooh purdy graphics, I buy"
People see simple box "meh this looks boring"
Even though its the same game. Considering how image obsessed the US is, it makes sense. Japan doesnt tend to care as much.

No, I haven't played the demo, though I have seen gameplay videos showing it. It doesn't bother me since whatever the game comes out as, it's still Final Fantasy and will be undenyable in its quality. I rarely hate any game I play, so I don't see this one as being a "down the drain" purchase. I've read a few reviews of the game as well and I don't think I'll have anything to hold against it.
One another note, this is the first time in, oh, 4 or 5 years I've been excited like a kid at getting something. I thought I'd gone down the road of "it'll come out eventually, so no reason to go hyper over it", so I find this refreshing in a sense.

Well, I am a fan of the Final Fantasy series but not in the sense you probably think. I'm a casual gamer, so I only bought one or two games at most every year, up till three years ago. Now it's maybe one every year and a half. So I tend to gravitate to the tried, true and popular games. that is not to say I don't appreciate less known games, but rather that I do not have the time or available ressources to play them. So I play Final Fantasy because I like it and it has high production quality in the sense that a lot of effort goes into it, like jwb said.

- The entire thing's not really spoiler-rific until the end... All those FMV screencaps I've been seeing have all come from this...
- Looks like Star Wars meets Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers... Which is pretty meh story so far...

October 5th, 2006, 09:15 AM
I'm playing the leaked version that was handed to reviewers, it's a very polished game and was 4 gig unzipped. From what i've seen, the english dub is very high quality for a video game. Even if you're a complete dub hater you must have serious issues if you can't recognize the leap in quality from X/X-2 to XII.
I don't mind the battle system... but it's (and any other FF to be truthful) really lacking after playing 6 hours of Valkyrie Profile Silmeria. The opening really sets the scene and the music is much better when playing with the game than listening to just the OST.
Licensing looks really interesting, graphics are among the best for the ps2. Berserker were you tempted to hit the "big" one at the start of the desert? lmao.
I do think this will end up like 9 in terms of boxes sold (which is a damn shame to be honest), square missed their chance of a ps2 "8" when they made a MMO.

October 8th, 2006, 07:59 PM
So I've been playing FFXII for, oh, several days now. Yeah, I've got the CE fully paid on preorder, and I'm fully aware the methods still aren't proper, but it would just kill me to give early priority to people who have no intention of ever purchasing it at release day prices. So to hell with it, I got in on it.
I'm kind of surprised by how many preconceived notions of FF this installment breaks. I won't discuss any plot details, as that would unnerve me if I were reading, but...
There's quite a bit of gameplay in this one. Cutscenes are far from anything Xenosaga, and you can easily get preoccupied for many hours before even getting another one. Moreover, the graphics...well, due to having rotatable backgrounds that can be viewed at every angle as opposed to fixed single image backgrounds, they're not as pretty. Hell, not even as pretty as Xenosaga III. But its obvious more work went into them. Astounds me to see FF choose a gameplay/exploration approach over a pretty one.
And while the game is not hard, it sure as hell doesn't hold your hand. If you get a little frisky with intimidating monsters, they will kill you with no chance to escape.
While no World of Warcraft and far from any of the complicated RPGs, this is simply not a "pick up and play" game. Mainstream? The elements of the game aren't geared to the mainstream at all. No, rather, the players must learn and gear themself to the game. Definitely refreshing. A lot of game is in here, and anybody with desire to get knee deep in it will probably be pretty occupied.

Yeah from the short time I've played it, it looks like being a massive game with all the Hunts and your treasure room etc. I'll be lucky to complete it at all by the time it's released in PAL territories.. which is like March 07 or some ******** :\
MightyDustLoop
October 8th, 2006, 09:45 PM
Oh come now, you can get it done by THEN. But goodness, with this among others in my backcatalog, I actually might be able to suppress hype and hold out until someone starts to get a lead next gen. Not saying there's not some good looking stuff hitting the new systems, but it may be a while until games this involving start getting released. Or at least more than a couple on any given platform.
Right now I'm just having fun hunting bounties. I pretty much have 3 favorite RPGs this gen, DQVIII for smart gameplay, KH for stupid fun and atmosphere when I just want some less "involved" and taxing gameplay, and Xenosaga III for its mix (high tier IMO on the atmosphere, story, AND gameplay). If someone had told me DQVIII of all things would be the one on my list FFXII might wind up replacing, I would have laughed. But sure enough, there is a lot of gameplay in this game. And rather than beating you with details in the story, they often give you a lot of info quick and leave you to process it.
I think this one has the potential to be my favorite FF since VI. It seems like a fairly involving experience.

I was under the impression that the Hunts were about the only sidequests the game had. I haven't heard of this treasure room.
But I think 5 months should be plenty of time to finish everything. While its different from previous FF incarnations, its still produced by Squaresoft, not Nippon Ichi.

In my 180 hours of playing FFXII (importer here) I have never heard of a treasure room. Are you talking about the Pirate's Hideout? That's the closest thing I can think of related to a "room".
Anyways, there's also sidequests for hunting down rare monsters, fishing mini-game (which you basically need to complete if you want one of the best swords in the game), optional espers and bosses, hunting down "chickens" across the world, etc. There's quite a lot of sidequests in this game :naughty:

Oh come now, you can get it done by THEN.
My backlog is massive, currently playing VP2 and I want to replay vp1 and than 2 again, got a 15 hour disgaea save to continue off (was playing it before vp2), okami, disgaea 2, dq8 and about another 10 rpgs and if WoW's expansion comes out in Nov gfg.... I've probably only played 10 hours of warcraft in the last 4 weeks but the expansion will just take back my soul :(
And Yeah I meant pirate room.

Glad to hear it. A review I read said that the Hunts were about the only side quests there were and I was disappointed to hear that. Lack of sidequests is a bad thing in my book. The more optional quests and bosses the better. Are there any Uber-bosses like the FF7 weapons?

In the beginning, probably. You'll start to realize that gambits are really limited as you approach late game. I found that I needed to interfere with my characters actions a lot since the gambit's just not good enough to keep me alive. And I doubt it's even possible to kill the optional bosses with gambits alone.

Square has a habit of dressing their leads awfully fruity. A lot of the ladies like it, guys....not so much. It leaves them pretty open to forum abuse. But hey, if a guy can get away with wearing green tights, then what the hell.
Good thing about Vann is he's a little less annoying when he opens his mouth than a certain FFX character. Hell, I don't think it's even the script, but his voice actor pulls it off well. Tidus's English voice actor only provided more ammo for the haters. Vann's? More subtle of a pitch (aka, less whiny).

Based on the reviews I've read. the focus of FF12 is on the plot and politics and the characters and their development take a backseat. It doesn't look like there will be much of a "love story" in FF12. I think we will see little "love story" beyond a little bit of flirting, if that.

There are a couple of things that can be missed but only like 2-3. I recall one sidequest that is missable, one ultimate weapon that if you don't do it the easy way (which requires you to not do certain things in the game) it'll be 1/10 chance for it to appear in a treasure chest and 1/10 chance for the chest to appear, and also a set of Genji equips that if you don't steal from a certain enemy, you'll miss it forever.
So really the only things that are missable: that one sidequest (although the reward is nothing good) and the set of Genji equips. Otherwise everything else is obtainable at the end of the game.

For a society with royalty (and essentially a sky sailor)? Makes a lot more sense. And they feel like very authentic accents and not overbearing, forced ones, so I'm okay with it. In fact, I feel the dub is simply phenomenal. Makes me wish they'd redo FFX's. That's probably why it was a bigger hit with the Japanese than with the North American fans. Our voice acting sucked.

They are very light accents, most of the time you won't notice them. Its not like Dragon Quest VIII which had very heavy British accents(although I loved the accents & it wouldn't fit without them). The only main character that really has a strong accent is Balthier who sounds just like Obi-Wan from the Star Wars prequels:P He sounds great though. It helps that the VA is British. Everyone else ethier doesn't have an accent or its very light where they just sound like they have a lot of honor & talk like it was a Shakespeare play, which fits because the dialog is spoken in a very classical way like in a play.
Its about fitting the characters and the accents work great. FFXII is set is medieval-like world & when you think medieval times with knights & such you don't think of American accents do you?
The dub is very well done.

You're really pushing a little hard with this one. Fran is awesome, closer to a "Deedlit", and surprisingly enough, I find her the hottest character in the game. And here I was never into beast girls.
I think the game is associated most with SW in the style aspect, with a few key events being throwbacks to some things that went down in Star Wars. Its a very political story in nature, but so are many things, and it doesn't quite take so much from SW in that aspect. SW being of course a culmination of a number of planets and kingdoms, while this takes place in a smaller kingdom in a world pretty much governed by two large powers. And associating the Judges with Star Wars is a bit difficult, as they are, at closest relation to anything in Star Wars, an "evil Jedi".
I think the political events and feel of the game mesh quite a bit better than SW1-3, but if you like the style of the peoples and locations of Star Wars, I won't lie. There's a lot of that same feel here. Truly though, its a good thing, as I feel that even if its an ode to Star Wars, its a far better final product than 1-3. Of course, that is purely my opinion, as comparing a game and movie trilogy isn't something that can be considered fair.

Actually, the lower the number the better IMO. That's why I think Dragon Quest VIII pwned so hard. At first I was like wtf, 4 characters for the whole game but it worked out really well.
Well I just pre-orded FFXII CE the other day, but I was kinda surprised that they actually had more copies left to pre-order. Character customization is solid. I love the map grid. Generally if you pick off mastering heavy weapons, you end up on a trail of nothing but heavy weapons. I put off learning quickenings for a while. DON'T DO THAT! Definitely buy those squares on the grid when you figure out which 3 everyone will get. Besides being akin to your limit break attacks (everyone loves those, right), a person who's gotten 2 or 3 quickenings gets double or triple the magic (SP). You'll be able to roam the map longer.
My biggest beef though is that the customization is entirely the same, except for summons and quickenings. Sure, the base stats means it would make more sense to proceed somewhere else on the map grid, and you probably want to round out your group with different weapon/magic focus, but ultimately, you have access to all the same stuff.
I'm perfectly fine with 6 characters, but then I preferred the old days of FF4 (2US), where they gave you your group, and that was it. No switching needed. Too many characters was the main reason I disliked VI and VII so much. Either way, since you're looking at three party members at any given time, I think six is fine. It's hard enough not skewing the levels with six as is.
My biggest complain about this game is its "too damn long". A lot of gamers complain of brevity, so for many, I suppose its a compliment. But I like my 30-50 hour RPGs. No complaints there. Then I have a better shot of playing all the good games out. As it is now, no chance. Maybe the people who complain of game length are really broke? I don't know.
Current progress: 60 hours in, lots of mob quests left, don't know if I'm near the end, but there's little indication that things are coming to a head.

That's all I wanted to hear, I'm actually glad it's long. But is it a "good, I don't ever want this to be over" RPG or is it the "bad When the f**k is this thing gonna end" RPG?
I'm very sure that's certainly dependent on the person. But I've never personally put 100+ hours into a single RPG quest if that's any indication (and I actually started with FF1). A few I played through several times to hit that mark, but mostly in my early days when there wasn't much else going on, but I mean literally a few (1-3), and I try to play through most major rpgs.
So I would say that it's pretty indicative that it's long "in a good way". The story is strong, but also often quick spurts and sparse in details, so the gameplay is really the draw to begin with. The mob hunts are the big time killer. There's quite a few, and they can take as long as an hour or so. They're not exactly hard to find sidequests though, so its very easy to get caught up in them. Most of the hunts are for huge boss like characters, so its, well, kinda like lots of little boss battles. That's a huge draw IMHO.
Even without a FAQ trying to pull some 100%ish quest, its is not hard at all to find 100+ hours of activity in this game. In fact, you'd pretty much have to ignore a lot of those you know full well about to get it done in a decent double digit time. I've never quite seen that level of length in a game. I've actually heard trying to get everything may net you closer to 200 hours. That's INSANE!
So, uhh, long, and I'd like to try out some other games. But I gotta admit I'm enjoying it. I've little desire to ignore mob quests and purely grind through the story. I admit to liking the battle system though so that I'm easily drawn in, but I hope it yields the same results for you.

That depends on what you consider a "class". If class is definied by the skills and equipment a character is equipped with, yes. You can easily have Balthier stick to nothing but guns and daggers and lightweight armor and techniques and call him your resident "thief". But me personally, I've got plenty of SP to do all that and more, so I strengthened him in magic and basic stat increases and at least gave him the basic healing spells. In fact, I've done that with every character, as you'll have more than enough lp to do so sooner or later, and you're more likely to survive if anyone is capable of status curing and healing in a fight.

Haha, yea it takes a lot of time to get everything in the game. It took me close to 200 hours to finish the main game + all sidequests + get every single best equip in the game. If you just want to finish the main story though, it'll most likely only take like 70ish hours or less.

Indeed, I'd imagine I can shave some time off my game if I didn't and don't bother with the mob hunts. But for me, its one thing to ignore side quests I have to read through a faq to even find out about. I do that all the time. But its another thing entirely to skip side quests like mob hunts that are laid forth for me. Just walk into a bar, check the posts, and kick the living crap out of something bigger than me. I'll at least try and do the side stuff that's laid forth for me.
And because of it, I'll spend 100+ hours on this one. Still good though. I'm pretty good about taking that philosophy with all the RPGs I play (unless I abhor playing them), and I've yet to hit that mark. 200 hours though? Damn. I might not bother with all the best equips. Let's be honest, at the level you had to be at to complete the side quests to attain all those, you can usually whup the final boss's ***......

You can only have 3 in a party at a time, like other FF games. However there are guests where you have no control over them, so sometimes your party contains 4 characters.
If all 3 of your characters die you can switch to the remaining characters you have. Kinda feels like cheating...
