View Full Version : Does anyone else actually like Double Zeta?

Well, I've finally gotten around to watching Double Zeta..
..and I seem to like it so far.
It definitely has more of a saturday-morning-cartoon feel than most of the other Gundams, but, hey, it reminds me of the shows I grew up on. I think it's nice to see a humorous take on the characters from MSG and Zeta(i.e. Bright and Yazan), even if it may hinder our ability to take them seriously, and I felt that the series actually has, say, Bright, in a more active role than Zeta, even if it's generally humiliating.
Now, I'm you might know I'm not too big on Zeta, but I'm in no way saying that Double Zeta is better than Zeta. They're difficult to compare, and I came to each series with completely different expectations. I had heard that Zeta was the greatest thing ever, whereas I had constantly heard about how craptacular ZZ was, so Zeta disappointed me while ZZ pleasantly surprised me.
In any case, the series is a nice change of pace while maintaining connections and plot threads from the series we know and love, so I'm a fan for the moment. At the very least, I think ZZ might be a better Gundam parody than SD is. Zeta Zaku for the win! :P

Zeta Zaku is one thing I don't hear many fans talking about so kindly. -_-;
I've liked what I've seen of ZZ(episode 31 or so), but I'm so inclined to take regular breaks form watching it because some parts don't grab me as much as others. After I finish the MSG novel(s), I'll go back to Double Zeta.

I did enjoy it, but no where near as much as the other Gundam series that I have seen. Halfway through the series takes a whole new direction and starts acting like the other gundam series.

I liked ZZ, and even more so than Zeta it gets better the further on you go. Judau and the group grow up some, Haman is (IMO) a far better enemy than the titans were, even Mashima, by the end, is something of a legend.

Yeah, that's what I've heard. Considering that I enjoy the silly pace of the beginning, I have to wonder whether that'll be a good thing.
But, so far, I'm finding the characters really likeable, even if they're caricatures.
I find Mashymre's odd personality and admiration for Haman quite entertaining. Even though that whole on-a-crusade-for-the-sake-of-Lady-Haman thing might be intentionally corny even for Double Zeta, I managed to vaguely relate to it.
It's nice seeing an enjoyable light-hearted show. In that respect, it reminds me of the earlier half of Macross, but I felt that Macross drowned too much in the realm of romantic fantasy (which is fine, just not always my thing).

I enjoyed ZZ as a whole, The Comedic Beginning was a breath of fresh air after the sad ending of Zeta. I think the comedy was necessary to build us back up the seriousness of the later half.

MUCH BETTER then it's lead on to be. Double Zeta is a pretty good show and it's got an interesting feel for a Gundam. It took me a while to adjust to because I watched it right after finishing Zeta. The first 17 or so episodes were decent, but at times have some major flaws. Especially the Moon Moon episodes... What in the hell did that have to do with Gundam!? Probably the worst of the worst as far as Gundam episodes are concerned. Once episode 18 rolled around it really started to pick up and turn around. I enjoyed that portion of the show a lot.

It wasnt bad but it wasnt incredible either. I think its my least favorite of the Tomino Gundam shows but it has its moments.

The Scooby Doo crap of the first half is bad. The Moon Moon people single handedly drive it into the pit of hell never to see the light of day again, though Glemmy Toto singlehandedly almost lifts it back to mediocrity.

I thought it was great, its just the first half goes from decent to bad, but the second half makes up for its first half.
And more Haman was great!
Glemmy was a great villian because he was very human & looks nothing like the villian stererotype. If anything he looks like a hero! So it was very unique to see a villian like that.

Hmmm, the more I'm hearing about it, the more curious I get to see it, but the question for me is how? Is it available in the US commercially yet? Or is everyone watching fansubs?
Levon

Fansubs only so far.

HAMAN-SAMA! BANZAI!!
Starts of crap, then gets better. Haman was the best thing in it.
However it will never be forgiven for what it did to Yazan.

I've only seen some epsodes here and there. Mostly episodes at the begining. I would preferred a dark continuation..but humor is good.

Now that I've been watching it for a couple of days, it seems to be having a similar effect on me as tokusatsu does. It starts out fresh and fun but eventually the silliness is too much and one wants to watch something that he can take seriously without fear of dulling his brain on too much slapstick humor :P .

I have yet to see ZZ, though I've had the subs sitting on my comp for who knows long. I have yet to see Zeta, which is the reason I haven't watched it yet. I'll find a way soon enough to see Zeta tho. :P

I though that Gundam ZZ was alright. The first part was just so-so. The Moon-Moon epsiode was really lame. I've only seen up to episode 35 but the show was starting to pick up nicely.

The rewrite of ZZ after he started planning for CCA is great, the beginning pathetic, average them out and thi shows just passable.

This is news to me. I've never seen ZZ (haven't started on even Zeta yet), so the idea of a silly Gundam series is strange.
Now, is it really "Scooby Doo" type of unbelievably silly, or is it a Patlabor type of believably silly?

I hated ZZ. It came after Zeta and thats really a hard act to follow. I just wanted a serious continuation of Zeta's plot and ZZ did not provide that.

The second half was serious, although not all the time.

ZZ was considerably the time when everyone thought Tomino lost his freaking mind. He has always been knhown for his dark and moody series and didnt think twice to kill off a great character on a whim. When the first half of ZZ came out I even thought he lost his marbles. He did go back to his normal self towards the end though but not soon enough if you ask me.
I guage animes by weekend couch time. When my days off come on friday I will grab some anime hit the couch and start a series depending on how many times I take some nice long blinks aka fall asleep depends on how good the show is. Zeta I can watch all weekend straight and never fall asleep once. ZZ does a pretty good job of letting me catch up on my ZZzzzz's

I can see compilation movies working very well with Double Zeta because unlike Zeta a lot can be removed.

ZZ compilation movies would throw yet more complications into First Century UC, given that the Zeta Compilation movies make it hard for ZZ to take place at all.

I know this is several months late in coming, but:
So you watch shows 24 hours a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, only falling asleep when the series bores you? Wow.. that's.. some lifestyle..

Like they leave Shangri-la right away, after they defeat Yazan Rather than staying for eight or so episodes worth.
I actually liked ZZ. Almost every bit of it even the beginning episodes except for Moon Moon.
Moon Moon could have actually been way better than it was. First off if Neo-Zeon was holding the Moon Moon people hostage rather than the crap that happened it would have been a decent two episodes but no, they go down in history as the worst gundam episodes ever.

The redeeming factor is that Moon Moon brought Bernal Spheres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernal_Sphere) into the Gundam universe.

I like it, yes the first half is cheesy and what they did to Yazan is kinda unforgivable but it gets better plus Judau is my favorite Gundam hero because he doesn't start out as the typical Gundam hero.

I just finshed watching ZZ, and if you can make it to about episode 20 it gets a lot better. I hated the deaf of Ple. I thought that she could have provided alot of interesting back ground story. Oh well at least there is Ple 2, and how ever many Ple clones Glemie made
Also on Ple 2 I was shocked to see her walk around nude. I bet they cut that out when the US version Is released.
In Ep 35 camile reminded me of Professor X from the X-men. The way he could use his Newtype powers to give everyone orders.

By the way what happens to Puru two. She kinda disappears after that battle with Haman.

They won't cut that scene. Bandai's not 4kids or the far right of the US Senate. I doubt you know this, since you think that that scene would be cut, but Kikka, Katz, Letz and the women of the White Base were able to walk around nude and have shower and bath scenes in 0079 TV series. So there would be little to no reason now, or whenever they decide to release ZZ, for that to be cut IMO.

Your right zeta even had a nude scene too.
What did you think about Bright handing over the New Argama to the teens, Plus not to mention the fact that it was way to late in the game for a ship change.
Also I thought it might have been interesting to see them actualy take Mineva(I dont know if I spelled her name right). I was wondring how she would react with Shin and Kum.

Double Zeta rules. After watching Zeta the beginning was quite the shock, but admittedly I enjoyed it for what it was worth. Completely out of place and silly, but it managed to entertain me for some bizarre reason.
But the second half is pretty damn solid.

At least four; Lila Milla Rira got herself a shower scene, into which Jerid intruded.

Could Haman's Newtype reaction where her clothes look like they disappear, be considered nudity as well?
Talking about in Zeta, not ZZ...not sure if she has one in ZZ, haven't seen.

I've just recently re-watched the last half of ZZ. In the past I didn't really like this show, but now that I look back I think it's becasue I went straight from the end of Zeta (one of my favorite anime endings ever) to ZZ the same day. I just wasn't ready for how ZZ started. Watching it through again, I now really like the show quite a bit. I could do without Mondo though, I didn't praticularly like that character.
I do like the feeling of most of the shows from the time period that ZZ was made. ZZ is now in my top 10. For now anyways.
