I'm not a musician. No. I can't even read musical notations. But I somehow managed to composed these following songs (no lyrics). I just need some comments/opinions on them, because some of them are going to be used in a strategy game that my team is going to make soon over the summer.
I didn't copy anyone's work. These are 100% original. I just composed using my ears by testing out each note and put them down accordingly.
Thanks in advance!

These are really 100% original? They are fantastic! One thing though, the battle song doesn't seem upbeat enough, doesn't get your heart racing. Thats what I like in my battle music at least.

Loved the 1st, 2nd,4th and 5th songs..nice work.
The 3rd song..the battle one..needs to be heavier and more intense for a battle scene.
Just my opinion. Great work though. Keep it up.
P.S. I like listening to your music when I'm writing. You have a good thing going there..let me hear more soon. Thanks.

The battle music is too laid back. It's good, but it's not "battle" music. It's something I'd hear in a cavern or some ruins or something.
The lone wolf music reminds me of a samurai.
Sentient sounds like it could be placed in a factory setting of some kind, a-la the Magitek factory in Final Fantasy 6. The Magitek factory theme and your Sentient song sound nothing alike, but I was trying to help give a context -_-;
The travel music definitely has that traveling 'round the world sound to it. This is one of my favorites.
Your forest music reminds me of one of the ice levels in Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. I like this one, too.
Overall your music is good; it's all very serene. If that's what you were going for, bravo. If not, I recommend creating a few tracks with a faster tempo, and I look forward to hearing more.

Ah, thanks for the feedbacks. Yeah, to me, it's really, really hard to make an upbeat battle music. I guess I can try going all crazy on the tempo and such, then change the melodies a little based on the previous tracks.
And yes, I tend to compose serene music. It's aggrevating to know that whenever I tried to compose something that should be upbeat, it turned into another serene song. Argh.

I would suggest listening to Manowar as inspiration for better battle music. That was basically all they did.
Other than that one they all seem to fit their scenarios.

Thanks, people. I thought it wasn't good enough to be on a game, etc. Too bad that I still can't learn how to make actual MP3 yet. Fruity Loops is so hard to learn.

I just wrote this music last night near midnight when suddenly, I have this inspiration (sort of). It's incomplete though.

You have to export to mp3 in FL. There are free online tutorials avalible for the software.
Sentient Wolf
June 17th, 2006, 12:39 PM
Incomplete stuff is fun. Heh.
Anyway, I've tried some of the online tutorials but they are not easy to follow as well. I guess I just need to spend more time on the program itself.
Basically, I want to be able to create a mp3 song from scratch in FL.
kiyomi
June 17th, 2006, 12:45 PM
where in FL you at??
HSaabedra
June 17th, 2006, 12:59 PM
FL=Fruity Loops in this case kiyomichan.
You make the song as normal and instead of saving it in .wav there should be an option to export directly to mp3

ohhh..well see that? I had no idea..
Thanks Axl for clearing that up for me.

Most of my songs are already in mp3 format though. Granted, I first recorded them as .wav, then I converted them to .mp3.

Sorry, just found time for listening to it.
It is very good for the beginning and for background music. Congratulations!
Only small critics to do it better.
To publish the music you need it in written form. Learn musical notation, it's very simple - a few hours are enough.
I felt you overused a bit left channel for leading instruments. Good, you tried to make stereo effect, but it isn't only difference in volume - it's also phases. Probably, your software cannot do it or the bit rate was too low - 64kb/s. Don't skip from one channel to another - it's disorienting, or make clear that they were different instruments. Play some more with reverberation - it produces some space effect, for example, you can make clear when it is in forest and when it is in mountains.
Then you can remove that synthetic taste. Again, probably, it's due to low bit rate. I'd like to listen to your music in better recording. And the main thing in music is good melody.
Go ahead!

Thanks for the critique.
Sorry that I didn't see this earlier. The thread was buried by other threads and I forgot this one completely. Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll make sure to try and make some of these modifications that you have advised!
A new work in progress - a battle theme created because the project leader asked me to make one like this. And no. It isn't as chaotic as say, Final Fantasy music because: 1. I don't like battle music so chaotic. 2. I would rather have a nice soothing effect mainly because I guess it's my taste to such theme.

Wow, I'm impressed! It's rare to hear any type of music in this day-and-age with any sort of passion and vision, you could be the next John Williams if you ever get discovered

Lol... thanks.
But I can never be the next John Williams. I'm not a musician and his career is just legendary to me. :P
Oh, and I finished the mountain 02 theme, in case Kiyomi wants to listen to the completed version.

Newest music that I made:
"Into The Deep"
http://jl32bit.com/datas/users/2-solarianwolf_into_the_deep.mp3
In this composition, I was trying to get some dynamic sounds going from left speakers to the right. But since I could only control one instrument at a time, I chose to use the vibraphone one as the dynamic sound.

Geez, this is some awesome stuff. This will go on my Itunes! If you keep at it, you could do FF and such games. Good job.
EDIT: I too would actually like to get the full version of these songs. I have a MSN but I never use it. Do you have a AIM?

Actually, for some reason, a lot of the songs wont download for me. Is that me or the site, I can oly get like 5 of them.
P.S. This makes me want to play the game. When it comes out, let me know. This will be just a PC game or what?

Ah, half of those songs I have removed from the server at one point in time due to limited space. I do have AIM. It's - MantaSpectacle. I'll add you if you have the AIM SN in your profile.
Thanks for listening though. ;)

I haven't listened to them yet, I'm at the library, so I can't really, but I think I saw someone say you used fruity loops? That program is ridiculously hard to use (at least for me). I'll give you praise for even figuring it out, without knowing musical notes or anything. I tried it, I don't know the notes either, but I was like...............

Lol, no no no. I'm not a real music artist so I can't even figure out how to use Fruity Loops. I use Finale 2006 midi composer. I tried to use FL, but after 2 years, I still couldn't understand it. :P
