Alright, well since the anime section has one of these, I figured one for manga couldn't hurt. So post the last manga series you completed along with thoughts on that series here.

My last two:
Ultra Maniac - Nice little romance manga that was a fun read, I feel behind on it for quite a few months then just bought the rest of it all at once. A nice, fun and lighthearted read at 5 volumes.

SaiKano - Read this a day after watching the anime and the result was about the same - loved it. As with Full Moon, I found that any minor complaints I had with the anime series and vice-versa, were complimented nicely with the other medium. Right now I'm slowly reading it again while on vacation, and still enjoying it greatly.

The last one I completeled (a couple of days ago) was Basilisk - Not that good, but definitely entertaining. Only 5 volumes, so definitely worth it.

The last ones I've finished (a few months ago):

-Fushigi Yuugi- A bit disappointing as far as an ending...but, overall, I was still satisfied with the series. It had plenty of lovable characters and a fascinating, dramatic story, so I was a bit sad to read its conclusion. Hopefully, Genbu Kaiden will have a happy ending just like Miaka's story had (though I find that highly doubtful).

-MeruPuri- I was sad to see it end. Very sad. It was a cute and short series, and the romance certainly held impact. I'm sure the series would have gotten too sappy for me if it had lasted longer, but it was perfect at 4 volumes. Very nice series, and I can't wait to read more manga from Matsuri Hino. ^_^

That reminds me...I need to finish up Maison Ikkoku, Othello, and Saikano. -_-;

I think the last one I finished was Battle Royale. Despite the changes Tokyopop apparently made, it was a pretty good series.

I just bought the last volume of Samurai Executioner the other day, so I'll finish that series later today.

The last series I "finished"? That's a while back...... ~"~

I think it was Tentai Gakuen Q. It's not available in English I'm afraid. It's a series made by the same creators of Kindaichi Case Files, though it's a group of students from a detective school trying to solve murder cases and defeat the ultimate enemy of the school. A great read for detective fans. ^^

If it counts, I reread all of Fake a few days ago, so technically, that was the last series I read the ending too, but if you just mean the most recent series I had finishd for the first time, it would be Battle Royale, which, unlike Fake, had an ending I wasn't overly satisfied with. I mean I figured Shuya and Noriko would make it out alive and all that jazz, but it was still somehow disappointing. I guess it just seemed too easy or something. Too cheesey and unrealistic. Not to mention that the last decent character was killed off for the sake of the two most useless throughout the series. Bah! While it was an impossible turn of events, I would have so loved either Kiriyama to have won or Kawada's betrayal to be genuine, but alas. I guess the ending wasn't so much bad rather it was just too predictable...

Erm... yep. That's all I have to say on the matter....

The most recent manga I've finished were:

1) MeriPuri: >u< I'll admit that I brought it for the art. The series doesn't stray far from the usual shoujo series guidelines but it was a good read. It could benefit a couple more volumes, though.

2) Royal Seventeen (Japanese only): >A< Story WAY too predictable and I only brought it for the art. It's pretty much a Harlequin novel in manga form. However the one-shots in Volume 1 and 3 are alot more better than the main story itself and were my favorite in the books. I'm glad it's oly three volumes long. LMAO.

3) Real Bout High School: LMAO, it took me years to collect all 6 volumes due to distinterest, but managed to buy the last three because they were 50% off. It's a good ending of the series...although it seems like a set-up for the anime somewhat (although it has inconsistences), which SUCKEE***D.... I wish there was a manga version for the anime that made more sense.....

4) Chobits: OAO Why I didn't get this SOONER.... I brought volumes 2-8 at Anime Next for 40-50% off. This is why I'll be a CLAMP fan forever~<3. The ending was bittersweet and amazing, the anime destroyed it though... It made me come close to crying a few times too.

I just finished Saikano a few minutes ago...and I don't know how to feel about the ending. It just...ended...all of it. I was sad...and a little depressed...but I suppose I was expecting that from this series. No wonder it took me so long to complete. -_-;

I would definitely recommend it, though. Overall, the series really makes you think about life in general. ^_^

Well...I finished Rurouni Kenshin a few hours ago. While I had read scans for the ending a few months ago, I was still a bit...sad about its conclusion. It was a series that really managed to keep my attention for almost 3 years...and I was sad to see it end. I can't wait to read Yahiko no Sakabatou in next month's issue of Shounen Jump, though...so I suppose RuroKen won't be completely over for me until I read that. ^_^

Anyway...I can't wait to read Watsuki-sensei's new series Busou Renkin next month! :D

Today I finished reading Kingdom Hearts and Someday's Dreamers. Kingdom Hearts was okay, but didn't really impress me. Someday's Dreamers was good, but I wish it was a bit longer than 2 volumes (Which combined, isn't much bigger than 1 normal volume of manga)

Two days ago, I finished Rurouni Kenshin. Half of me wanted to throw myself a party: after three years of following this series, of anxiously anticipating each new volume, at long last, we've come to the wonderful end. But at the same time, the other half of me was a little said, because one of my favourite series is now over.

But now I have Yahiko no Sakabatou to look forward to, so I guess the Rurouni Kenshin saga is not yet quite over for me yet. And the half of me that's a little sad is not as sad as it might normally be. :) (I'm hunting down the next issue of JUMP, just for that series.)

I also finished Alice 19th today, which makes me quite happy (especially since I actually found the time to read almost the entire series at once). And actually, I'm not sad that I've finished it. Maybe it's because it's a short series, only seven volumes; or maybe it's because the ending was so happy and just what I'd hoped for.

I finished Testarotho the other day. I'm glad I read this in the bookstore and didn't spend money on it, because the ending was terrible. Hell, it wasn't even an ending. The series clearly got cancelled (the author's little spiel at the end pretty much confirms that) and it can hardly even be considered an ending. The series was never great, but it was at least decent for the most part but the (lack of an) ending pretty much destroyed it.

The last manga series I completed reading was Chobits. I have yet to finish Fushigi Yuugi or Ayashi no Ceres because I still haven't gotten all the volumes. Then there's also Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden that is still being published in progress and have yet to be completely released. Lastly of course there's my Shoujo Beat subscrition. I have yet to completely read those series including Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend), Nana, and so many other great series. I would highly recommend subscribing to Shoujo Beat for anyone who is looking into getting into the shoujo fandom and likes reading manga.

I'm really looking forward to getting into Alice 19th, Fruits Basket, Slayers, Rurouni Kenshin, and maybe even Full Moon wo Sagashite in the future. ^_^

I finished the R.O.D. manga. The first volume was alright, but volumes 2-4 were too silly (even by R.O.D. standards) to take seriously and I think they caused a few plot holes as well.

finished Remote #10 this morning, thus bringing it to close (at least it said "the end", don't know if there is actually more since it takes forever for these things). i thought the ending was pretty weak and tacked on just for a finale, maybe because it was somewhat anti-climactic after all the great cases before it or because the release schedule was too long and it just lost some charm. either way i really enjoyed the series (which started out as a blind buy) and everthing it brought: humor, mysteries, and the sexiness!

and in other news, although tecnically not a completed series, i finally reached the summit of finishing all 79.5 released volumes of Hajime no Ippo scans! :trashed:

Hmmm....I don't quite remember what I finished last so I'll list the last two or three I remember completing.

Onegai Twins (borrowed from a friend at work)....it's a one-shot so I don't know if this counts. It was OK. It was too "relationshippy" for me...I wouldn't have bought it on my own volition.

Chobits (Also borrowed from friend at work)...Sorry Chobits fans, pls don't hate me!! But I didn't like Chobits at all. First couple books were really good, then the whole thing flopped for me, for reasons that will only spoil the story if I mentioned them. (Let me suffice in saying I can't sympathize with a robotic female lead character. She's a robot! A ROBOT for Pete's sake! Just unplug her from the outlet already!!) Definitely would NOT have bought this on my own.

I'd recommend you don't. I love Alice 19th very muchly, but Fushigi Yuugi is terrible. It starts off pretending to be a cute, prettily drawn comedy, but it quickly becomes depressing, and certain tricks are overused (rape, death, male-falls-in-love-with-female-lead-who-isn't-that-great). I doubt Ceres is much better, since it's earlier.

Last thing I finished reading was also Alice 19th. It was absolutely amazing, a nice change for a Watase series.

I'd probably agree there. I have the 1st FY box and I love it, but I think it should've ended there. The manga isn't terrible until volume...7-8 type area when everyone starts dying.

Last thing I finished reading was also Alice 19th. It was absolutely amazing, a nice change for a Watase series.

Actually, Ceres was made after Fushigi Yuugi. I found Ceres to be far better than FY. You sound like you don't like dark and depressing stories though, so I don't think you would like it.

I did see the anime for it and liked it. Maybe the manga isn't as good?
I still may give it a couple volumes to try it out. But thank you for your warning!

Are you asking about Ceres? The manga is just as great (though it lacks the wonderful soundtrack). However, it will be pretty much identical until around volume 5 or 6 and the last volume is pretty much identical to the last few episodes of the anime.

If you are asking about Fushigi Yuugi... I can't compare it to the anime, since I haven't seen it yet. I thought it was pretty good, or at least the main story was. The main story ends in volume 13. Volumes 14-18 are like a sequal and its.... not so good. It's not bad, but its pretty mediocre and wasn't nearly as good as the rest of the series.

Thanks for that bit of info, Hitokiri Shadow. If I pick one, it will likely be Ceres since I haven't seen the anime of it. Plus, sometimes I like darker stories. I heard the romance in it was weak.....is that true?

This post is for DazzleKitty. Since you've already seen the Fushigi Yuugi anime, I'll see what I can do to try to help you. If you haven't read the FY manga, I would highly recommend it. The story is mostly the same overall, but there were some slight changes between the anime and manga like with Miaka's personality and the way the story started. In the original manga, Miaka found the book in the library the same way she did in the anime, but in the manga, she choose to enter the Universe of the Four Gods because she had a fight with her mother, and not because she was accidently pulled into it like it was shown in the anime. In the manga, Miaka was also more determined and serious, and not as whiney and klutzy as she was in the anime. Ok, I don't want to spoil it for you more. This is for you to see.

The original Fushigi Yuugi manga was 18 volumes long. Comparing it to the anime, vol. 1 to 13 of the manga were events that took place in the TV series while vol. 14 to 18 were events that took place right around the second FY OVA). This covered the original Suzaku and Seiryu part of the story.

Then there were other FY novel series made called "Fushigi Yuugi Gaiden" and "Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden" that were released. FY: Gaiden was 4 volumes and covered events that took place in the FY Eikoden OVA. On the other hand, FY: Genbu Kaiden is the newest installment of the series with Genbu's (and possibly Byakko's) part of the story. It's still ongoing in Japan as we speak. Currently, there are 6 known volumes out so far being released on Yuu Watase's Perfect World Magazine released only in Japan.

Finding FY in stores is relatively easy. Everything has been released of it so far with the exception of FY Genbu Kaiden which is still being released right now. Fushigi Yuugi is a great shoujo story to read if you like reading romance, drama, and fantasy all in one. It will surely touch your heart if this is your thing in stories. I hope this was of any help to you. :)

As far as Ayashi no Ceres is concerned, the manga is vastly superior to the anime. The original manga had everything that made it worthwhile such as having a great storyline, memorable characters, and best of all, character development. On the other hand, the anime felt rushed as it felt the entire story was crammed into 24 episodes. Unfortunately, the characters here didn't develop as well as they did in the manga (especially Shuro), and some of the characters personalities just felt different too. On top of that, many scenes in the manga were not present in the anime, and that really made a huge difference to the story overall. When I compare both, the original manga seemed to pull me into the story more, but the anime just couldn't do the same. On the other hand, it was great to see this story get fully animated, and the music is absolutely memorable. Despite its flaws, the anime still managed to entertain me otherwise, but it could've been better if they had made the series longer. Who knows, Ceres might have matched or even surpassed Fushigi Yuugi's popularity.

Oh, thank you so much Lemina! I was going to PM you, but looks like you got to my question before I had a chance!

Those are some very interesting differences. I heard that the main lead in Genbu Kaiden was more serious, and Miaka was the ditz. I guess I was wrong and people must have been referring to the anime version of Miaka. That's very interesting..... I may just read it on that fact alone, just to see how Miaka is portrayed in the manga.

Ah, and I've heard some of the things you mentioned about Ceres, how it felt like a huge story was compressed into a tiny 24 episodes. I probably won't bother with the anime for it, but I am intending on getting the manga with Christmas money. I was flipping through it in Borders, and it looks really good. I'll try to get both eventually. I am intending on buying one of them for sure with Christmas money.
I am beginning to think Yu Watase may be one of my favorite manga-kas. I really love her way of storytelling.

Thank you so much again, Lemina! :)

Your welcome Dazzle, I was searching for new posts when I came across this discussion. ^_^ You're correct about Takiko (Priestess of Genbu) being a lot more serious than Miaka. I mean, she does have her comical sides once in a while too, but overall, she's a girl from the early 20th century who is deeply concerned about her celestial warriors (especially Rimudo), her mission, her family, and she is also very good with carrying a Spear to defend herself with. The whole FY: Genbu Kaiden story as a whole is a bit more mature than the original FY was. I would soo highly recommend this story to you too!! :) So far up to vol. 5 of the series has been released and I'm loving every bit of it!! Vol. 6 of FY:GK is supposed to be released by early 2007.

Bit of a thread revival, but I recently finished two great series.

Fruits Basket - The last 20 or so chapters of this series were great, and I loved every minute of it. The final chapter was beautiful in my opinion, as were chapters 129 and 130, and I can easily say that this is the best manga I've read so far.

Death Note - Finished this last weekend, and even though I already knew the basic ending, it was interesting to see how the final events played out. A great series I highly recommend.
And even though I knew from the start that Light would die, I was hoping he would've beat Near in the end, then Ryuk would've killed him. I personally never liked Near and Mello much, but I really liked L. Well you can't have everything. I was at least glad Misa survived, I was sure Light was going to eventually kill her since she showed up, too bad I hear she commits suicide a year later.

Hmm, personally I thought MARS was rather too long than too short. Should have been maybe half as long. Because some of the later plot twists were pretty stupid and IMO the story could have done without them.

Hmm, personally I thought MARS was rather too long than too short. Should have been maybe half as long. Because some of the later plot twists were pretty stupid and IMO the story could have done without them.

I probably phrased it incorrectly. It was a long series, but they didn't show key events. For example:

Kira's graduation, their wedding and whether they had kids should've had some detail. All we saw was Kira getting a gift of antique lace for a bridal veil, and from what I understood, they were already married when she got the gift. And how about showing Rei winning a motorcycle race? That was a key element in the story. I did, however, enjoy any scene with Masao in it. He was so twisted.

There were more but my brain's crapping out on me at the moment. I think a lot of plot twists could've been eliminated in favor of giving the existing ones more detail. Also, having large drawings with the characters uttering each other's names endlessly took up a lot of space, and there were more of those scenes than there needed to be. JMHO.

I just finished reading the final volume of Ai Yori Aoshi tonight (#17 just came out this week). I'm actually a little sad about it, as AYA was one of the first anime I watched, and was the first manga I started reading. After all that, I'm kind of sorry it's over now, and there won't be anymore stories about Kaoru and Aoi and the rest of the gang. Still, it was nice to get the actual end of the story, after wanting to know for so long what happened after the anime ended.

Definetly recomended for fans of romantic comedies, who don't mind a little harem action and fanservice in a truely good love story. :naughty:

I just read a one-shot this evening, thought I'd post it here since it completes the series (as well as starting it...!)

It was line by yua kotegawa and was somehow appropriate after reading a news article (http://animenation.net/forums/showpost.php?p=6231797&postcount=64) earlier today that made me think about this kind of Japanese phenomenon. It's a dark little story, but I thought it was well done. ^_^

It's rare to get me to read manga about pointless suicides and really enjoy it. I mean, I really hate how it's glorified and trivial in things like "Welcome To The N.H.K." (at least, in the anime version which I watched).

I guess I like seeing people being saved and then told off for trying to end their lives. I'm very anti suicide. It's not for religious reasons, I just think it's really selfish and cowardly.

I read vols 1-5 of Broken Angels by Setsuri Tsuzuki.

This series was really inconsistently paced, and the page layouts made it hard to read, as in "which bits of the page do you want me to read in order?" There'd often be two or more threads of text on the page, intertwining, especially in later volumes. The first three volumes of the series contained a few little amusing stories with amusing characters, though I occasionally felt like "oh wait, are there some pages missing? What just happened?". The longer stories were harder to follow, and it was difficult to distinguish characters sometimes. The last two volumes were actually plot driven and weren't nearly as amusing. And the end of the manga, again, made me go "what; that's it? Did I miss out a few pages or something??" -_-;

I really like this series, its short, sweet and has a very likable cast. I really like the art and character design, which helps bring out the comedy in a situation, or how a character feels during that time. I kinda wish it went a few volumes longer and showed the rest of their high-school life, though it wasn't 100% needed in the confines of the story that needed to be told, so I'm okay with that.

Well, it took nearly two years to finally get around to this series (I bought the first volume a long time ago), but better late than never. The story manages a perfect blend of characters, story, romance and comedy that works really well and makes it an enjoyable read. Yazawa does a great job at making her characters realistic and act and think like real people, which is always a good thing, especially in a story like this. I'd have to say I like the manga a bit more than the anime, the constant breaking of the fourth wall by the characters and the better and detailed ending did it for me.

Honestly, I was expecting this series to be better, but I still enjoyed it. My biggest problem with this series was that I felt that the plot was everywhere and that it didn't flow very smoothly. However, it was entertaining enough to make up for it. I was satisfied with the ending, and the bonus chapters was interesting. I liked that we got to find out about Tokiko's scar. I'm still debating whether to buy the anime, though. I'll probably watch it fansubbed first.

Well I haven't finished even one series yet Im trying to get more rurouni kenshin im only on vol. 8 now. But I think I just have a knack for picking long series Naruto,Inuyasha, FMA(not that long but still ongoing) Although I heard somewhere that in Japan the Inuyasha manga will be ending after this arc not sure if its true but I really want to see how it ends, although that might take a while since im only on vol 31 and in Japan I believe it around vol. 50ish.

I enjoyed this series from beginning to end. I loved the art (it is Yuu Watase after all), the plot turned out to be better than I expected, and even the characters that didn't stand out to me very much did grow on me. The ending also left me satisfied. :)

Ai Yori Aoshi

Oh... I know a lot of people would hate me for even thinking something like this, but... I kinda wish I was Aoi. I mean, so focussed, so trusting, such an enormous work ethic, and so very very much in love. She and Kaoru are such a great couple! I think the story was well done and wrapped up really well too.

I liked this series quite a bit. It was very cute, and the mood throughout the series was very calm and relaxing. While not one of the greatest series, Aqua is definitely unique. I've already read the first two volumes of Aria, but I plan on re-reading them now that I've read the prequel.

Bronze/Zetsuai....t'was a great experience, even if I was forced to use a sorta shody translation in the end. The "twist" still left an impact on me.
However, it's not the most closed ending I could've wished for, seeing as it was running for more than a decade. Oh well.

I really wanted Light to kill Near just because Near was an annoying brat, and I wanted Mello to win because Mello has cool facial scars. The ending was really good though. When they finished explaining all their tricks I was like Mind Freak!

Btw, Does anyone know of any series that has sort of the gothic motif that Death Note has, only kicked up a few notches. I don't really know how many mangas have crosses, skulls, roses, and things like that. I want a darker manga.

Imadoki! - Nice little school life manga by Yuu Watase. The drama and stuff kind of built up slowly throughout the 5 volumes, but it was a nice story about a girl's high school life and the friends that she makes fitting into a new (and elite) school. Overall, it's a short series using gardening as a metaphor for love and friendship. I don't love it, but I did enjoy reading it.

I just finished Hana-Kimi. It was a cute, fun story with a great cast of characters.

The last volume I thought there would be more commotion going on about the whole dilemma that involved the school staff rather than just a rumor among the students. It felt like "Oh it's no big deal. It was fun. I guess I'll go home now." Even so, it's definitely one of my favorites series now.

I really enjoyed this series, though it wasn't anything unique. I liked the main character, Rando a lot. There were a lot of hilarious moments and I really laughed from the bottom of my heart but the ending wasn't that satisfactory, IMO. I wanted the secrets to be revealed but the mangaka has chosen to end it that way, so I am not complaining here. Definitely good stuff. Highly recommended.

This short series turned out much better than I expected. It's really similar to LIFE and Confidential Confessions. The ending was really sad, especially since Ayu died alone. I also read Reina no Unmei which was just as good. This one felting pretty unsatisfying because I expected Reina and Ayu to be reunited sometime at the end but she just stopped appearing after becoming blind. Also, Akira dying was too predictable.

I read all 21 volumes of Kare Kano the past two days. It completely blows the anime out of the water since it doesn't reach it's full potential till after where it got cut off. It's easily one of my favorite manga series. There wasn't a single page that didn't have a purpose, the side stories were fantastic and the ending was picture perfect. The entire story was set up so well and by the time everything was ready to be wrapped it, things just seemed to fall into place.

I started this manga two years ago and finally got the chance to read all 15 volumes. This series focuses mainly on the psychological aspect of humans and this is one of the reasons why I liked it so much. Rei and Kira are great protagonists, though I can't deny that Kira can get on my nerves sometimes. As the series come to an end, more secrets were revealed and unfolded and we will get to know all the answers to our unanswered questions. I can't say it is one of my favorite manga titles but it was definitely good times. Good. 7/10.

Finished it a while ago (well, when volume six came out). I absolutely loved the series, but thought the ending was kind of rushed. I mean the entire volume wasn't even the rest of the series. It was about half and then the rest of the volume was some other story by the same manga-ka. I thought that kind of sucked and I felt kind of jipped in that way. All in all, I thought it was a great series, just thought the ending could have had more to it.

Also, I read Rurouni Kenshin BIG Edition and loved it. It's following the anime exactly right now, but does it go into a different storyline than the anime? Or does the series follow the anime the whole time? Just wondering!

There are some changes in the storyline for the first arc. The second arc has the most similarities when you compare it to the anime, but it's still awesome. The last arc in the manga is completely different and answers some questions about Kenshin's past.

Not my favorite work from that mangaka, but I liked it. I thought it was interesting to read a series about stones and jewels. Great historical romance. I truly enjoyed reading all 27 volumes of the series and I must say that it came to a great conclusion. Tight plot and well developed characters. My favorite characters were Ageha and Shido and I really wanted Ageha to find happiness at the end. The relationship between Sarasa and Shuri was one of the best especially that it wasn't a smooth one. I am quite sure that this series is not for everyone but I can't recommend it high enough.
