Hi, I know I haven't written much in here, but I was wondering where I might be able to find the Sailor Moon Sailor Stars season on dvd's with good English subtitling. While I have found some results on ebay, I suspect they've all mostly been from Hong Kong with poor english subtitling, so I haven't yet purchased any of them, seeing as I have already had the episodes on VHS for years. However, being that I love that season so much, and my VHS collection won't last forever (and takes up a lot of space), I was wondering if there was a place to buy the legit Sailor Moon Sailor Stars season on dvd, with English subtitles (removeable)?

I'm sorry to inform you that no such collection exists. Your options to obtain Stars on DVD are to import the R2s and watch it raw (in Japanese w/o subtitles) or to purchase an HK bootleg. I can't speak for releases in regions other than 1 or 2 but I doubt any of them have Japanese audio with English subtitles.

I'm in agreeance, but I can expound a little bit. I'm fairly sure (99.99% here) that Toei has not licensed an English translation of their Sailormoon property outside of the previous, now expired, licenses from the first Sailormoon up to and including SuperS. Sailormoon Sailorstars has never been licensed for an English translation in any region.
You're best bet, if you are looking to clear off and replace your VHS of the series, you'd have to download the fansubs. The quality may not be much better than your VHS but a digital copy will not suffer the same wear and tear that VHS will. While it's tricky to get them onto a disc that will play in a DVD player and are hard-subbed (cannot be removed), it's a feasible option.

Like others have said, you won't find a good set of Stars on ebay. Just download the fansubs. There's a group using the remastered dvds as a source, but they've only gotten 8 episodes, I believe, completed. But the old VKLL fansubs are still floating around, and they're not too terrible in video quality. But the remastered version just looks so much better by comparison...
Quick Edit: VKLL or someone affiliated with them used to/might still have the fansubs available on dvd. You'd either send them the discs or money to cover the costs of the discs. It's a better alternative to ebay, if they're still operating, since you'd know what you're getting.

^Yeah, the problem with VKLL's fansubs is that they use VKLL's translations :P

I would love to get my hands on Sailor Moon Sailor Stars DVD's rather than downloading them. Considering the upcoming Playstation 3 video game console will be universal, meaning that it can play any video game (and hopefully DVD's) from anywhere around the world, I would definitely try getting the R2 Japanese DVD's if they're available. If not, I wouldn't mind getting fansubs as long as they are on DVD. ^_^

pssst... I can honestly tell you the Sailor Stars Hong Kong version is not that bad quality and the subtitles aren't bad at all, not compared to how horrible they were for the live action Sailor Moon series. The funny thing is that they actually sell Sailor Stars bootlegs on Amazon.com!

Even though, it was pointless to bump this thread, ill add that fansubs of Sailor Stars are easily available. Don't buy the bootlegs, it seriously is a waste of money.

I think the only problem with the Sailor Stars fansub by VKLL is that they look terrible by today standards of what is considered good video quality.
I recommend checking around because I know of two groups that are subbing it but they haven't finished the series. But don't buy a bootleg. Burning data dvds of fansubs are worth more than those.

Well they're cheap and good quality. So I disagree.

No, I certainly did not. I bought the HK bootleg. Are you sure you've watched the Sailor Stars Hong Kong bootleg, because it was absolutely fine.

However burning dvds of downloaded fansubs so you can watch them on a dvd player are still worth more than those bootlegs. As I said there are people who are using better quality video now for their fansubs. Hell, even if the VKLL quality isn't good it's better than paying for the same thing but bootlegged.

The reason VKLL's video quality looks bad is because they are digitized versions from their SVHS/LD Master files from, oh, a decade ago. And I'll still stand by what I said last year about their translations.

I already knew that. I was just pointing out that the VKLL video isn't up to today's standards on what's considered good and that it was better than not having anything at all.

It's incredibly expensive, for a bootleg. I mean sure... it might be great, but the prices I've seen for the complete set like that are nearly $400. That's outrageously priced. This is an illegal copy, they have no rights to the material in question, so that price is silly.

That's exactly what I was going to say. The pricing is the same as if you were going to buy the official thing almost, really. It's ridiculous.

Why don't you just download the series or watch it online somewhere? The price is nice but it's just not official and they're probably R1 rips minus Stars.

It's a hell of a big download. Some people don't like watching anime on their computer, as well. These sets may be bootlegs, but some people will always prefer them to downloads. I would download the series personally, but I don't know if I'm happy about the amount of space it would take up on my hard drive.

These aren't R1 Rips, because it contains all 200 episodes. Plus, watching something on your computer just isn't the same as watching on the television screen.

I told the owner at the pawn shop that they are bootlegs I went ahead and bought them he took $125.00 for all 6 sets, the quality is almost if not as good as the pioneer release. The reason I am not downloading,it would take to long to download and burn to DVD.

It took 10 DVD+Rs and 1 CD-R worth of space which is like 40 GBs. And there are programs which allow you to watch Computer Media files on TV now.

Yeah I know that. I said earlier that minus Stars they could be R1 Rips. And I'm aware that watching something on your computer isn't the same as watching something on TV, but, you'll still see it either way, and you didn't pay for something that does not deserved to be bought.
Bootlegs are hit and miss, but mostly miss because there's usually something wrong with them. Be it pixilation and image quality or sound problems, (music overpowers the voices, out of sync, sound mutes, etc.) or the dreaded engrish altavitsa translated subtitles. There's just never a perfect bootleg to me. And though some may be R1 rips, they're still inferior to the real R1 version.

From what I've experienced, none of those programs compensate for TV overscan. So you wind up losing part of the picture and the subtitles get cut off at the bottom and on the sides. That's been my biggest issue with trying to burn fansubs to dvd. Honestly, it's just less of a hassle to pick up a bootleg set if it isn't too expensive. Though obviously I don't support this if the series is licensed...

They're data discs not DVD video discs. There are programs you just have to devote yourself to them. DVD players with Divx and Xvid playback ability will move the subtitles into a non-overscan area too. At least mine does.
But it is less of a hassle to buy bootlegs, but I still wouldn't unless I really had to.

Get an original XBOX. Softmod your original XBOX for about $35, or less if your friends have the things you need. It makes a great media center. It has adjustable overscan compensation, and it plays everything but h.264 files just fine.

I'm glad you're happy with them. The quality might actually be better than the Pioneer DVDs; I have some of them and they're terribly blocky. They're like VCD quality. :(

I always watch anime on my various monitors, but I know both the DVD players in my parents' house have a "Zoom Out" option in the menu, so the entire screen is shown. One of them even plays divx and xvid from burned DVDs or a USB stick, too. They aren't super-expensive DVD players or anything, either. One's a UMAX that cost under £30!

Sounds like you got bad discs. The Pioneer release looks good for the time it was released and the age of the series. Nothing about them says VCD (unless you're possibly trying it on a high def setup that will enhance all the flaws in a dvd). The ADV release, on the other hand, is pure crap. Are you sure you're not mixing up your companies?

We usually hook up the laptop to the tv and watch that way. The dvd players that we have don't play divx or xvid, unfortunately. Not knowing much about how fansubbers work, I don't think most of what I have is either of those anyway. A friend has a divx player that can't read the majority of what we've tried on it. I'm going to play around with the zoom feature and see if it will go out further. I didn't think it would, since what it's projecting is the original picture size. Thanks for the tip!
Also not being technically inclined, I have no clue how to modify an Xbox or any other player. I also can't afford an Xbox (even the original), as much as I would like to have one just to listen to those few clips of Kotono Mitsuishi, Sakura Tange, and Maaya Sakamoto in the DOA games. :naughty:

VKLL back in the day had some nice titling equipment plus they had bought all the Laser Discs for Sailor Stars. Timed it and ran off their own SVHS copies of the LDs, I went ahead and got the SVHS copies from their SVHS masters. Almost as good as having the LDs with Subtitles. Now there subtitling was standard and for me that is great. Some people now use bad colors or bad fonts when they overlay the titles and it makes it hard to read the subtitle "at-a-glance" and get back to the action. That is why their subtitles are like that, plus they completed those Masters, oh say 9 years ago! I made my own DVDs from my SVHS copies. ^_^
