Thanks. I already have a few, I'll add them when I get some replies.
Thank you.

They don't eat it in jappan but Durian fruit. It smells like rotten Salami and taste like slimy rotten onions mixed with avacado and bannana.

Now I have been to a resteraunt in Tokyo were you pick a turtle and they prepare it fresh for you includeing an aparatiif made from sake and the raw beating turtle heart dropped in. They also put the liver and spleen in seperate cups during the meal for your enjoyment. It cost and arm and a leg to do this about 250-300 dollars for 4 people.

Yeah the turtle meal is one I know about, sake mixed with turtle blood? Then the heart dropped in...deffinately odd, but something I'd try. They use practically the whiole turtle for the meal right?

I also know of a soup and desert made with Swallow's nests. And meals with bats. Yum. Both from Malaysia I believe.
Thanks guys, keep 'em coming. Thanks for the link.

i cant remember if this was korean or japanese (saw it on the travel channel while flipping channels), but there are some people who eat still living octopus, which can be quite dangerous if it decides to stick to the inside of your throat, so it's also like a challenge since people have died when they did it wrong, i think it has some sort of macho factor to it

Koreans serve live octupus and squid. Its much like sushi or how you eat tuna, except for the part where its sometimes gets stuck to your throat.
There's also a japanese restaurant in my country where they serve pickled>?< jellyfish, haven't tried it though.

From japan.
I sometimes eat:
Grasshopper,A burdock(root of a tree) ,seaweed
I rarely eat:
A horse, a dog, a whale
I have not eaten, but there is an eating person:
A frog, a mamushi(snake),A sea anemone.

I watched Grandmother who ate a tarantula with Discovery channel the other day.
By the way, a Japanese eats most of the internal organs of a cow.
With a heart or a stomach or a tongue or the womb.

Some African tribes eat golden monkey brains. This isn't necessarily eating, but my friend who's Somalian told me that Somalian tribes drink cow's blood and EACH OTHER's blood to stay healthy. o.o ... Kinda like blood doping I guess but not.

Have any of you heard of bird's nest soup? I think it's a Chinese food, but I'm not sure. Anyways, it's just what is says. A birdnest in soup...

I hear one country (I also think this one is Chinese too, but not sure) will eat a tiger's penis in soup. It was said to help fertility. That must have been a long time ago, because tigers are an endangered species now. Wonder why?

My grandpa loves squirrel brains. He says he likes to suck them out of the skull. I think that's one of the most repulsive and disgusting things I have ever heard.

I've tried Durian, since it's popular among us Vietnamese. I liked it. ^_^

Oh and it's not in Japan, but people have eaten pig's tongue (Chinese). And my dad ate a dog once. (And he's born in the year of the dog! That just didn't seem right to me . . .)

Oh I forgot about balut, there are two kinds one is a fermented cooked egg the other is the duck in egg. The latter is beyond gross and made me wretch (i could not get past eating feathers)

They don't do that around here I think your grandpa is pulling your leg. ;)

They do suck crawfish heads here to get the brains and fat out. You suck them until the eye stalked are retracted.

One of the oddet things that they eat around here are Amphiuma (http://216.109.89.105/reptile_amph/reptile_amph_l/ar0504_1l.jpg) a legless salamander that lived in our ditches eating crawfish and the like. The skin them and cook them in gumbo. I have never had it before but I have seen them trolling the ditches for them.

Both are true. Chinese people will eat absolutely anything. Bird's nest soup actually isn't that bad. ;S The one I detest is SHARK'S fin soup. Animal cruelty, ugh.

Oh, I am positive he isn't. During squirrel season, he has us go out and kill some for him (he's too old to get them himself). I actually went to a dinner where he had some squirel brains. My mom always talks about how he eats them...
He's funny. He looks out in his backyard at all these doves and squirrels going about and talks about how good they taste. I usually look at those things and think 'that's cute', but he gets hungry....
He also likes blood sausage too, which is just as gross as squirrel brains.

I'll back you up on this. I've never heard of people eating the brains, but I've got some old family cookbooks that have recipes for squirrel meat. They're not recipes for "any game you come across, hopefully rabbit" meat; the recipes are very clearly labeled "squirrel pie" and so forth.

I live in the sticks <_<, and there is this old guy that lives about a mile down the dirt road from our property. The dude is just plain crazy.

He will eat just about anything--squirrel, dove, sparrow (he's told us that it takes a bunch to make a meal @_@)....stray cats. That's just gross. He loves moose, bear, and elk too......on more than one occasion, he has stopped by our house offering my dad some 'elk burgers'. *shiver*

If he finds something even remotely edible, he'll go for it. I am seriously afraid of that man.

Ah... here's the Pratchett quote I was looking for:

Genuan cooking, like the best cooking everywhere in the multiverse, had been evolved by people who had to make desperate use of ingredients their masters didn't want. No one would even try a bird's nest unless they had to. Only hunger would make a man taste his first alligator. No one would eat a shark's fin if they were allowed to eat the rest of the shark.

~Terry Pratchett
Witches Abroad

He loves moose, bear, and elk too......on more than one occasion, he has stopped by our house offering my dad some 'elk burgers'. *shiver*
Moose and elk are extremely tasty. Bear's a bit greasy, but it makes an acceptable stew in a pinch.

I've ended up eating it twice without knowing about it beforehand :P Has completely weirded me out seeing books about meat here in Japan and turning the page to the horse meat section >D I will NOT eat it knowingly though. I'm one of those people that as a little girl I had a "horse phase". I don't knock other people for eating it. Whatever. That's their deal, I just won't do so knowingly :P

I still haven't tried my prefecture's "meibutsu" (famous product), which is "funa zushi", which is basically fermented fish. I'm not a huge fan of sushi or sashimi (I'll eat it, it just doesn't float my boat, as it were) and the idea one would take raw fish and purposely ferment it is bizarre to me :P *shrug* Some days I hate fulfilling some of the stereotypes Japanese people have about non-Japanese >)

Yeah, I know a taco place just 10 minute walk from my house (though the place is only open once a week) that sells cow brain tacos for 70 US cents a piece. I've never dared try them though. Yuck. Moronga (fried random animal's blood) tacos are very popular. Haven't dared eat them either. I always eat normal stuff in those places like cheese and mushroom tacos.

Heh, I've already eaten horse meat. Tastes almost identical to beef.

I tried squid once, and it grossed me out for some reason. They're just ugly animals, and eating them wasn't too good. They kinda tasted like fish-flavored rubber bands. It was so gross and I wanted to swallow it quickly, but it was so chewy that I couldn't!

No one mentioned kimchii? Bury some salted cabbage in the ground, dig it up a couple months later, then have it with dinner? Surprisingly, it makes a surprisingly good stew with cubed pork.

Which reminds me, this isn't quite Asia, but the Icelandic people like to bury cod or shark in deep gravel for a few months, then dig it up and serve (uncooked!) with alcohol. No surprise there...

I used to work with a half Korean, half American friend of mine and he'd bring it to work occaisionally. We use to grill it up with pork chops. It was absolutely fantastic. I unfortunately don't live anywhere near a Korean grocer anymore and I don't think the local Japanese carry it, but I've been dying to have it.

My recently deceased grandfather said the same thing about Tsingtao beer; it was the only beer he could get while in Korea and even then they could only get it when the Chinese were out of the area. We went to a Chinese restaurant one night for dinner and he actually volunteered to have a bottle (I think my dad and uncle had one each with him, too). He said it still tasted like $h*t though, which I suppose is vastly different than Kimchii, as I've nver really wanted to fancy a taste of Tsingtao.

Considering that good kimchee is left to ferment for a year he may have been right. I rather enjoy it on pizza.

Nuc Mam (fermented fish sauce) is another nasty thing that is supriseingly good.

...enter the Filipino...Balut is especially good after it has been "cooked in mud" after 18 days. The crunchier, the better. just shuck it outta its shell...mmmm...feathers...

...Dog has always been taboo for pinoys, but if the ocassion calls for it i.e.drunken revelry, we will kill a dog and roast it. not bad really. before you chuck your spears, the philippines has a lot of stray dogs, and we would never kill a "domesticated" a.k.a. imported and expensive dog just to eat it. that would be silly.

...monitor lizards anyone? they're not your average sized lizards that you see on TV. they grow up to be almost 5 ft., from head to tail, that is...but as a delicacy? TASTES just like chicken, when, and ONLY when you cook it the right way...

...more to come...

I love squid. At first I wasn't so sure I'd like it because I don't like octopus that much (too hard to chew and not much flavor), but squid is soft and has a great taste. Tastes great in paella.

It's cruelty if they fry it alive knowing the animal feels everything.

No wonder I detest bullfighting with a passion. Ironically according to mexican law, bullfighting is "technically" illegal. This is because they kill the animals and sell the meat as food. According to mexican law it's illegal to force an animal for human consumption to suffer while you kill it and since they stab the bulls giving them a slow painful death, well...

Too bad not enough people know the law to actually put it into action.

Jettachan..you have now officially grossed me out.....

and I think it's the Koreans that eat dog & cat..

...

Yes as do the Chinese and Filipinos. I have seen what Jetta is talking about, they basically wack the cat to immobilize it them put it in boiling water to take the fur off before butchering it is often flailing about in the boiling water. The cat is still alive after is dunk to be skinned alive and gutted. Not very pleasent at all. Amongst the stranger things i have picked up and mistakenly handled in China town is dried human placenta. The grind it up and make a tea it is supposed to to increase the chances of conception. :x

I saw them actually do that to a cat on tv once. It was years ago when I saw this on tv. It was a documentry about China. It upset me back then, and disturbs me even now. Do they have to do it that way? Couldn't they at least quickly kill the cat somehow before they dunk it in the water?

That placenta thing is gross. I don't understand how they could eat something like that.....

Haggis is great. I don't know why some of you wouldn't try it (okay, it's off-topic since it's Scottish and not Asian food, but whatever).

Oh, and the most horrible Japanese food in my opinion - NORI. I can't stand the taste or smell of it.

Maybe you're thinking of wakame? Wakame has a texture that's more slimy...but maybe nori IS what you're thinking of. :O

The thing I refrained from trying here was freshly cut off octopus tentacles. @_@ I can eat cooked octopus, I just don't like it very much (too chewy and it lacks any kind of taste to me)...but to have the tentacles flailing around in front of me was quite creepy. We were also served sashimi with the head of the fish on the plate...with the gills still moving. Instant appetite killer, at least for me!

And, I'm sure it's no big deal to some of you, but I still won't touch shishamo (a kind of fis) that gets stuffed with eggs. T__T We have it all the time for school lunch and I just won't eat it. ;p Alas, I tend to live up to the stereotypes Japanese people have of what foreigners won't eat/don't like (sashimi, sushi, natto, umeboshi etc.).

I'm okay if they eat dogs for food, but they could at least treat them humanely? I mean putting corpses next to living animals? Stocking tons of large dogs inside of tiny cages?

Mexico may not be the #1 animal rights defender on the planet, but even here they try to treat animals for meat better than that. Trucks carrying live pigs to the butcher aren't nearly as cramped up as in that photo.

The Federal District did the *OMG!* good deed of closing (probably permanently) the Nezahualcóyotl rastro because it broke animal rights and sanitation laws. Knowing how slumy Neza-York is, that place will probably stay closed for good.

Not intentionally, if they have anything approaching a brain. It's too easy to rupture the internal organs and ruin the meat.

Eating a deer after you accidently hit it is sort of like an immediate consolation prize back in Maine. You've just done about $2,000 of damage to your car and probably been injured, so the least the game wardens / state troopers can do to make you feel better is give you the meat. That's just common courtesy, and it'll keep your family fed throught the winter.

As for moose - nobody hits those to eat them because they generally walk away from your wrecked car afterwards. Big animals, moose.

Yeah, it's 2 grand if you're lucky.

I had a deer vs. car match once - I was extremely lucky because the deer was running across the roadway (perpendicular to the car, for you math geeks) and managed to leap over the car ... for the most part.

One of the hooves got caught on the very top of the frame, causing it to stumble and roll over the roof and then run into the forrest on the other side.

As for moose - nobody hits those to eat them because they generally walk away from your wrecked car afterwards. Big animals, moose.

Yeah, those things are frickin' huge. I'm tempted though, if I can, on my next trip to Canada that I'm going to attempt Moose hunting. I'm not a hunter at all, but more or less a just to see if I can try it. After all, I've got a .348 caliber Winchester my great grandfather used to use (for deer; the median sized animal it was made for is elk sized creatures) and I just need to be able to shoot five or six shots in a row (while hitting a moose and not breaking my shoulder).

^That's the thing, any other animal, I just won't do it (unless life in danger, yadda yadda yadda). For some reason, moose... I have nothing against them or any malice towards them, but ... I think it might be kinda funny.

I've had numerous oppotunities to go deer hunting, one of the local mountains has annual over-population and is always inviting hunters up to bag one or two or five. I've got two rifles that are calibered for deer but never had the drive to go.

Plus, I'm not so sure how well I'd do having to gut them in the field...

about fugu:

you cant eat fugu all year round. you can only eat it from about january to may, because the rest of the year there is just too much poison. most people dont eat fugu very often at all. the fugu "experience" costs around $100 (at least where ive seen it... unfortunately ive never been in japan when it was in season, so i still havent eaten it), and there are a bunch of courses, all of which use the fugu in different ways. ive heard it doesnt tase that great (or, it doesnt have much of a taste), and what you are paying for is the expertise in cutting it (its actually not dangerous to eat at all, because the chefs are very rigorously tested) and for the presentation. still i would eat it just to say that I had.

ive had kangaroo, but not camel yet. funny how australia is the best source for purebred camels these days :P

someone (i think jun_inohara) mentioned freshly cut off octopus leg. ive had that here, and i say that if you are a seafood fan you should definitely try it at least once. its really really good.

Uhh, not if you have insurance. Every time it's been only the $200 payment to fix the grill, light, w/e gets damaged. Also, "probably injured" ? What type of cars do you have in Maine, because we've hit deer 5 times with 2 different cars and it's only done damage to the deer and to the car. Not even a seatbelt burn to complain about.

As for moose - nobody hits those to eat them because they generally walk away from your wrecked car afterwards. Big animals, moose.
Somewhat close to hitting would be horses. We used to have a mailman come by, but he hit a horse with his car and died. From what I can remember (being told), the horse came through the windshield. Not my choice way to go.

I'm talking about Whitetail Deer here, not those little pocket deer they have down south that barely have enough meat on 'em to make a sandwich. Whitetail are tall enough that if you clip an adult sideways in a standard car (i.e.: Toyota Corolla), they can roll over the hood and through the windshield. And then there's always the danger of just going off the road while swerving to avoid them, which happens on snowy roads all the time.

But yeah, most cars (esp. trucks) can take a deer hit just fine. Well, at least with no injuries to the passengers.

Somewhat close to hitting would be horses. We used to have a mailman come by, but he hit a horse with his car and died. From what I can remember (being told), the horse came through the windshield. Not my choice way to go.
Moose have this annoying habit of charging headlights, too. I'm not sure why, but there's something they see in car headlights that makes them try to jump over them. Which means that a thousand pounds of moose comes crashing down on the windshield and passenger compartment. Some folks have died that way.

I've seen an 18-wheel rig folded in half and strewn across the median from an Interstate impact with a moose. The moose died, but that truck looked like it had hit a bridge abuttment.

GUT THEM?????!!!!!!!!!!!!! aacccckkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you have to carry it a few miles out of the woods, you do whatever it takes to make it lighter. Field dressing is common sense, and it also makes the local coyote/wolf population happy. It's no different than slaughtering any other kind of animal.

In the cities, yes. The rural areas are more backwards, of course. Entire populated regions of the state have no electricity, and in some of the places in the northern part of the state, they still cut ice for refrigeration.

The following incident was recently related to KAPS by one of its members, Miss Mun Juyoung. Miss Mun lives near the Taegu Summon Market.

In her arms she held a cat, who seemed undisturbed by the water on the floor or the stream so thick in the air. Stopping at one of the hot kettles, the women sniffed once and dropped the cat in to the boiling water. Hideously scalded by the boiling water the cat screamed and clawed its way out but, the blank-faced woman, pushed it back in the water with a stick over and over again until the cat finally lost consciousness. The woman fished it out once more, the cat mewing and whimpering in pain, whereupon the woman pushed it back in for the final time.

Believe it or not there are a few people in the UK that do that. I saw a show were a lady threw a party to eat her afterbirth cooked like bubble and squeak :x

The Brits do eat to much offal anyway. I once dated a girl from the UK who took me to meeet her mother who imigrated here and she baked me something called Lancanshire Hot Pot that was every part of an animal I never want to eat (except lungs because they are illeagal here).

Probably more like pork. A joke amongst anthropoligist is to call any unidentified meat sweet pork. It is the universal description for human flesh amongst cannibals that spans contenants and oceans. This is probably because it is exactly what it taste like. We used to have a lot of fun with it on digs in Mexico when eatiing at local vendors who would not tell us what type of meat they were selling "It must be sweet pork" we would all start laughing.

All meat tastes the same to me. I always smother my meat with any spice I can get my hands on - be it hot sauce, peppers or whatever. I've never heard that though, "sweet pork" being the universal description for human flesh. Interesting. I foresee a lot of jokes in the near future.

I have run into new nastyness in modern day cuisine. Some Inuit tribes like to put dead seagulls in pots of water and let it stew for a couple of weeks then drink it. They call it sea gull wine. MMMM....MMMMM......MMMM. Almost as bad as Irn Bru.

So far as historical nastyness the Cohelia indians of southern texas enjoyed leaveing fiish out for a week then picking out the maggots and savouring them. They also performed soomething politely called "second harvest"

Don't go to any Native American powwows then. Buffalo, elk, deer, amadillo, possom, dog, snake, squirrel, dove, rabbit, moose, - they can all end up on the plate.

We have a lot of Chinese, Vietnamese, & Filipino people who come to our casino, & they definitely like snacks with durian in them. I found a wrapper that had a durian snack in it one time & wondered what it was. I had never heard of the fruit before then.

Contrary to the above, I love Papaya, It's one of my favourite fruits next to mango and persimmon.
Apparently, Durian is supposed to smell like cheesy feet (though to some it smells of perfume) and taste of custard.
And if you eat too much, It will give you the same effect as eating 3 cans of baked beans without stopping to chew properly.

In the wild, some animals eat the afterbirth. If you leave a cat to give birth on its own naturally, she'll eat everything that came of the birth, umbilical cords and all, then carry on life as normal with her new babies.

Of course I love it! :) Koreans can't do without it cuz it's like the essential dish that goes with every meal.

*To add a bit to the discussion going on here*
1. Some people are saying that Koreans eat cat but uh..hello? <_<
I'm not sure where that information came from but I've lived almost my entire life here in Korea and I haven't seen any cat soup or cat meat shops around.

2. About the dog meat discussion. Yes, the Koreans eat dog meat or dog soup which is called 'boshintang'. The issue itself is very controversial here also. Some pet owners rally against the killing of dogs while some people state that boshintang is one country's own culture and that it's not like boshintang makers are killing every dog in Korea. The dogs that are actually eaten are only specific breeds and the process of getting dog meat is like that of getting a cow's or chicken's meat.

I'm not sure what to think myself because there are so many opinions going on here. So please! Don't wrap up Korea as one whole disgusting country that goes around killing all sorts of dogs. -_-;

And Hiroaki, I think your biased posting on dog meat is enough. I sometimes get the feeling that you're just trying to make a bad impression on Korea. If so please restrain will you? Thanks.

BTW I found a interesting site on the dog meat culture. It's about supporting details on why the dog meat culture should be approved of. Although I don't agree on some points it's nice to get a look at someone else's view.

c'mon, why does boshintang have such bad impression on certain ignorant people?its not like dogs are snatched from their owners' arms to be killed.

countless other people in the world eat far more disgusting/inhumane stuff.things a normal person wouldnt even consider edible.and speaking of inhumane, sun bears are kept in tiny cages in parts of china, having their bile drained everyday through a hole in the gall.and when the bile is gone, their paws are chopped off to be cooked.

so rearin dogs for their meat is cruel?tell me about it.

Hirouki Sakai made fish Ice Cream and on the Japanese one. The judges thought it was vomit inducing and asked him how he could try to do that to them.

I fixed your statement to make it factually correct.

I think onion ice cream is dreadfully worse than durian.

"Saying Durian isn't bad - coming from someone who eats it like it's nothing". Seems kind of repetitive :D

Btw, where has Mel been, and come back with such an avatar as such and such with suchness?

some cultures eat the brains of the animals....

In the Cajun areas it's a delicacy to eat crawfish brains....:P

A pinoy delicacy is Balut, cooked duck fetuses. It's actually pretty good.

The Phillipinos have the nastiest things to eat...I don't know if the Japanese are worse though....LOLz

I would like to experience this so-called "king of fruits" one of these days. I have heard that more yellow the flesh is, the sweeter it is like mango, but with an aftertaste of garlic and/or onion. It sounds very intimidating but Im up for the challenge.

king of fruits? that would be the banana.

There's a type of durian over that's really has no smell on it but is as sweet as custard pudding, if you ever venture in singapore, try some.

over ripe durian is very sweet but the smell is very uh intimidating.

High Five! Have you ever had a Durian Shake?

Well, considering ramen is just a type of noodle, that depends entirely on what you cook with it.

Traditional Ramen is a soup usually with vegetables, egg, and sometimes meat in it, so it's more than just the noodle type.

Most often when you hear of people eating Ramen, they're usually talking about the cheap noodles and powder.

every hear of fried ice cream? they take a ball of ice cream, cover it in crunchy stuff, fry it quick, then just open up the ball and eat the ice cream. i really wanna try it. a lot of times its green tea ice cream, but you can probably get it in vanilla.

Had it before :w00t:
It's done in some of the Japanese restaurants here so I tried it out.
It's yummy but the crunchy part and the ice cream altogether is overly rich so it's hard to eat a lot. -_-;

Ah yes fried ice cream is good.

As far as durian goes. Durian is okay, nothing I'd care to smell again but certainly something I'd want to eat providing I didn't have to smell it. Well I guess its just a bit worse than kimchi...

i just read a few posts here and i have to say ive eaten some of the things people have listed here as disgusting and all i gotta say is,

dont knock it till you try it! i mean- the obviously gross stuff like insect foods and maggoty cheese i can understand..

but,

durian i find is quite tasty, its really sweet, and i guess its an acquired taste.
birds nest soup- the idea sounds gross but its supposedly really healthy for you and i dont know, i didnt find it to be gross and its actually a delicacy, an expensive one at that.
and shark fin soup...YUM?!? that stuff is sooo good and healthy for you ( i think) someone said something about animal cruelty in regards to the shark fin soup. are you serious? whats the difference between eating some salmon or shark? a shark would feel no guilt having you for lunch, so think about that lol.

*drool* i dont know about anywhere else, but the Jersey shore has deep friend oreos. and in japan they have three oreos on a stick, covered in vanilla chocolate, and topped with chocolate on the side.....mmmm:w00t: it might be slightly different, but who gives a damn?!

The difference between shark fin soup and eating salmon is that alot of salmon is farm reared and humanely killed. What the shark fisherman do is barbaric they catch the shark live then they cut all its fins off then throw it back in the ocean alive and the poor shark dies a slow and painful death. Ohhh and sharks kill maybe 2 or 3 people a year we humans kill millions of sharks its so bad that if theres no sharks in the sea that will ruin the eco system. Sorry to go on guys.:)

as of lately ive become a King crab leg nut. its sooooooooo good. its best when its served right out of the pot with fully melted butter....*drool*:w00t:
and its healthy and not fattening at all, plus you can eat a lot of it and not get full, and the little amount of butter thats used doesnt really matter. the only problem: my dad eats it with me, and hes been eating crab for years, and cracks the shell like nothing. its still tricky for me.

how are you so sure that the salmon are "humanely" killed? salmon was an arbritrary comparison i used, my point is that in the end, they will still be killed. and eaten. and sharks are far from becoming extinct. sharks have been around ever since dinosaurs walked the earth- evolved since then of course. and lighten up, i was just being silly when i said that sharks wouldnt feel guilty having a person for lunch (i mean they really wouldnt) dont take it so seriously :P

..and so we digress
