Looks like the last thread was deleted, although I don't know why. (It seems that quite a few threads have been deleted recently, oddly enough though, I swear my post count didn't go down at all, even though I probably had 100 posts invested in said threads).
Well, I've gotten horribly behind in the anime, mostly due to random events happening in my life in the past month. I plan on catching up this today or at somepoint during the week. It still remains a favorite of mine, although it may fall behind NANA and Ouran in it's popularity with me. But Saber is still my favorite ^_^
Anyway, like the last thread, this is for discussion of the series, the games, etc. Just try to use spoiler tags for those who haven't watched it yet, played the games, etc.

I miss the other thread... :crybaby:
Anyways, the anime is really diverging from the game now. Shirou imagining Kanshou and Bakuya was unexpected. If we're lucky, we will see him using Unlimited Blade Works as well.
Neither Gil nor Lancer made their glorious comebacks in this episode, but it seems like we're getting to see Assassin fight again very soon. Yay!

i doubt the second spoiler.. he needs a whole lot of mana to do that, and i doubt he has it

With the anime diverging farther from the games, anything is possible at this point. I personally want to see Shirou use Unlimited Blade Works. I know he makes the Excalibur at one point in the game. Actually, I think breaking away from the games is a good thing, less complaining about what wasn't in the anime (Like with Shingetsutan Tsukihime, which after you read about the games, really leaves a lot out).

I'm really hoping to see Shirou use Unlimited Blade Works and it seems likely considering how he's been developing and the fact that you can see him fighting Archer in the opening.
Note: the following is based on the little bit I know about the Heaven's Feel scenario and part of it is quite likely to happen, so read at you're own risk.
Also, I'm hoping (and expecting) Black/Evil Sakura to show up. I hear that Black Saber is highly unlikely, but perhaps it will happen to another servant instead. I think it would be cool to see Black Lancer or Black Assassin

The Gates of Babylon is another reason I think/hope that Shirou will use UBW. AFAIK, UBW is one of the best ways to counter it.

Ahh... Episode 18 was great, probably the best since Ep. 14. The fight scenes were much better than vs Berserker, and we got a scene from Heaven's Feel at the end. It's a shame that we didn't see more of Shirou fighting Kuzuki, though.
On the plus side, it seems like we're finally getting to see Gil in the next episode. Hopefully, Lancer's comeback isn't too far away, either...
HitokiriShadow
May 6th, 2006, 09:39 PM
So the guy in gold armor from the preview was Gilgamesh? I suspected that but I wasn't sure.
The way things turned out in 18 make it look like we won't be getting Evil Sakura which I was really hoping for.
And what was up with the S&M suit?

I liked it too, I just thought it was a bit odd. I'm just not quite sure why Caster bothered changing her clothes.

I thought this episode was pretty disappointing. I wanted to see Evil Sakura but I don't think we will. And while the Saber vs. Assassin stuff was done well, the rest of the episode seemed kind of half-assed. The fight with all of Caster's little minions seemed unnecessarily drawn out and it wasn't done very well, IMO.
@gameoffreak8: If I had said anything else about him, I would have tagged it. But I don't know anything about him other than he's the 'secret' 8th servant. I don't even know what he looks like (hence why I am asking if it was him).

No, a Master can be defeated and the Servant will still be around. They can still make a contract with another Master as well. That was explained in the second or third episode when they went to the chapel and that guy explained everything.
On a side note, what is up with Caster's ears? I'm all for pointy ears (pointy ears are hot) but it seems out of place.

not sure, if you check up on the mythology about her it may be explained though. speaking of "what is up with" anybody know whats up with shirou always useing archer's sword's?..... wait it can't be.... is shirou archer? (i kinda doubt it since shirou would have to die to become a heroic soul... unless of course theres some "messed up timeline" thing going on.)
HitokiriShadow
May 13th, 2006, 09:31 PM
Yes, Shirou is archer. Or rather, Archer is the future Shirou (after he somehow becomes a hero).
Exactly how he came from the future, I'm not sure. Unless Shirou is a reincarnation of someone else, which doesn't make any more sense.

Nah, if Lancer is going to reappear (which I hope he does soon), then he won't be one of the bad guys. He helped Shirou-tachi out in both Fate and UBW, the latter in which his master (who shall remain unnamed) used a command spell to make him kill himself for doing it.

Each is a differnt verson of the story. Unlimited Blade works was the best Followed by Heaves Feel and the one the Anime took was the weakest and the one with the most plot holes known as Fate.
Fate is the cannon, UBW fills in most of Fates gaps, and HF takes what is left and gives us the most twisted story of them all.

They can't summon new servants. They can make contracts with servants who have lost their masters and are still present in the world.
Overall, 21 was good. I was kinda' expecting that Shirou would take on Archers form to Fight Giglamesh, thus revealing who Archer actually was, since the scabbard thing was just weak.

Also it'd be awesome some OVA with UBW or HF..... ^_^
Sushikins
May 29th, 2006, 06:17 PM
A sceond season with ataraxia isn't likely, as it's doesn't follow any specific ending to stay night, in fact, I think just about every character from stay night is in ataraxia regardles of wether or not they died in stay night. If I recall, the only main character from Fate/stay night not in Fate/hollow ataraxia is Shirou himself, although I can't remember the exact details why. But it does have the 8th Servant Class in it, and while Avenger is pretty weak (I've read that the Avenger Class is the weakest class of Servants), he's got a neat look to him.
Avenger from the F/ha Another CG set:

Also, was it revealed that Sakura was Caster's true Master or was it left at Shinji in the anime
No. The Caster arc, which vaguely hints at aspects of Heaven's Feel, was done poorly, IMO. It vaguely hints at Sakura and Rin's relationship, but I only know that they are sisters because someone mentioned it in a blog that I read, not because I was able to figure it out from the couple of flashback clips in the anime. It also only vaguely hints at Caster's past and her relationship with her Master. I never really figured out what was going on with them.
The Caster arc was a big letdown for me. So far, the Gilgamesh arc has been good though.
Siendra

Not. Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is more of an AU type of thing.
Also it'd be awesome some OVA with UBW or HF..... ^_^
Even as an OVA, Heavens Feel is a good deal to explicit. UBW wouldn't really work just becuase the anime series is already an odd amalgamation of it and Fate.
Also, was it revealed that Sakura was Caster's true Master or was it left at Shinji in the anime
When was Sakura ever Casters master? She was really Riders Master in the HF scenario. Shinji just had the book that allowed him control over Rider. Which was present in the anime.

ep 22 kinda sad that Lancer died just like that. i kinda wanted it to be more powerful, like Archer's death, but guess not. yeah!! more Shirou x Saber development! Next ep, looks like the beginning of the last battle. do you think thats Ilya in the final frame of the preview?

If its possible, tell me the episode number & time of when the attack is used & I can make the avatar for you.
episode 9, he's start's the attack at 8:39.
just saw episode 22 i wonder whats up with Ilya being ill... is SHE the holy grail or somethin? this may be pointless but did anyone notice the sword gilgamesh used to slay lancer was the same sword archer imaged and turned into an arrow back in episode 14?.... man with only 2 episodes left when the hell is archer and shirou gonna fight like they do in the preview, must see more archer and his uber cool "unlimited blade works"

They probably never will. 90% of whats seen in intro animations never makes it into the actual series.
As for ep. 22, I was pretty dissapointed. It bored me half to death, and the development between Shirou and Saber was minimal.

... Why? Lancer isn't even remotly close to Giglamesh in terms of power. No servant is.
I have to disagree with that a bit.
Much like Archer depends on Unlimited Blade Works and his tracing abilities (more so in the game than in the anime) to make up for his quite lousy stats, Gilgamesh has to depend on his Gate of Babylon and his vast supply of weapons, including Ea. Statswise, he's actually rather average - with the exception of his Noble Phantasm rating, which is the highest in the game (EX). Lancer has a higher Agility rating than Gil (A compared to C) and they both have the same physical strenght (B). Lancer also have a much higher resistance to magic (B compared to E).
Strip Lancer of his Gáe Bolg and give him a normal spear, and he'd still be a formidable meele fighter because of his high Agility and Strenght. Strip Gilgamesh of his Gate of Babylon and give him a normal sword to fight with instead, and I doubt that he'd win. He just relies too much on his weapons to be able to fight effectively without them. Even with his precious Noble Phantasms, Archer using Unlimited Blade Works could give Gilgamesh a bad day, as UBW is a very effective way to counter GoB. Ever wonder where Archer got all of his shiny swords from? Now you know.
Statwise, the most powerful servant is Saber - though her stats changes during the course of the game depending which Master she has. Now that she's with Shirou, as she is during the entire Fate scenario, she is much weaker than she'd been if she had an experienced Master like Rin, who becomes her Master in the end of Unlimited Blade Works. Saber also has Avalon, an EX rated Noble Phantasm which can even negate Ea - which is just as powerful or even more powerful than Excalibur, mind you.
Source of information: http://www.geocities.com/max3075/fate/saber.htm
... Then again, the anime may not be 100% true to the game. But saying that no Servant is even remotely close to Gilgamesh's power may be a little ignorant IMO - especially considering that Shirou managed to defeat him in the end of UBW, and he isn't even a Servant.

I was factoring in the Gates of Babylon.
In that case, then maybe saying "Why? Lancer isn't even remotly close to Giglamesh in terms of wealth. No servant is." would've been more accurate. :P
Gate of Babylon - The King's Treasure
Rank: E ~ A+
Type: Anti-personnel Noble Phantasm
Range: -
The key sword that leads to the golden city. By connecting to its space he can freely take out the tools in his treasure room. Obviously, the more wealth the user has, the more powerful it gets.

so to saber, it was all a dream? can anyone take a guess at how long it was in between saber disappearing and when Emiya goes back to school?
if SAber appeared when Emiya was at the bridge, that would have been amazing. since Saber gets a wish, instead of redoing the selection, how cool would it have been if she wished to stay with him? and that scene at the sunset, brilliant. the producers really captured the mood..
all in all, it was a great show... nothing classic, but it deserves to be noted as one of 06's better shows

I thought it ended pretty well.
Overall I felt the series was pretty good, although it was somewhat disappointed and had a few notable (in my opinion, at least) problems.
1) Pacing. The beginning dragged on a bit too long and some of the later episodes suffered for it.
2) The fights. Most of the fights were disappointing. The only good fights were Saber vs. Rider (both fights) and Archer vs. Berserker. The rest were mediocre (most of the fights) to bad (the Assassin fights).
3) The Caster arc. This arc really dropped the ball. They hinted at various things regarding Rin and Sakura, but didn't do anything with it. Same thing with Caster and her master. They showed some vague flashbacks that didn't really explain anything except that they Rin and Sakura knew each other from their childhood. Aside from Shirou being somewhat useful, the fights were pretty boring. Shirou developed a bit more of a fighter, which would have been nice if they went anywere with it, which they didn't.
I think most of the problems would have been fixed if they just had one or two more episodes to work with for that arc. They could have done that either by speeding up the early episodes a bit or by just adding two episodes (and making the series 26 episodes).
4) Characters disappearing near the end of the series. After the Caster arc, Sakura and Taiga just disappear until the last episode. After the events of the Caster arc, you'd think Shirou would at least ask Rin what was going on between her and Sakura or they would tend to Sakura or something.
Despite those fairly minor problems, I felt the series was pretty good and certainly enjoyable. Here's hoping Kyoto Animation decides to do a remake of it a few years and gives it fight scenes as good as episode 10 or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Can you imagine seeing Archer or Shirou's UBW with that kind of animation quality? *orgasms trying to imagine it*
And maybe they would show a little more skin than Studio DEEN did. KyoAni sure didn't have any problem with that in TSR.
Note to Kyoto Animation: Please do a remake of Fate/Stay Night and do the Heaven's Feel or UBW scenarios instead. That would be just godly.

Wow, you didn't an excellent job of stating some of the things I had problems with, as well. It's a shame to becuase I thought it had the potential to be much better. One more thing I have to add:
Shirou's self sacrificing nature, was annoying, especially in the early episodes.
(I understand he didn't want anyone to get hurt and that the trauma he suffered earlier in his life affected him.)

Yeah, I agree 100% with this. That whole flashback sequence seemed to be completely out of place as far as the anime goes. Why did they show Zouken? Or connect him with Sakura? Then we don't see Sakura again until the very end... Ep17 and 18 looked like they were going to add in more of Heaven's Feel story but then they totally abandoned it.

This was probably one of the best series that I've seen this year. Although I hated Shirou and his mushy feelings for Saber which took away the significant focus of the Holy Grail war for me, I still loved the fight against Gilgamesh. I just recently discovered this anime. I kept seeing pictures of Saber on anime modelling forums I visit and I thought at first that maybe she was a character from Soul Calibur, like Sophitia or Cassandra. I loved her armored dress and thought she was beautiful. So I was looking at a photo list of garage kits from Wonderfest Winter '06 and saw that the show was called Fate/Stay Night. I knew that even if the show turned out to be a turd, I'd still buy the PVC statue of Saber because she is such an awesome-looking character. She's probably the best-designed character I've seen in a very long time.
I started downloading all of the fansubs and watching them. I'm up to episode 15 or so now. At first judging by only knowing the character of Saber, I was hoping that it would be a fantasy anime like Lodoss War. It's not quite what I expected, but I like it.
I don't post a lot on here, but those who may recognize my posts know that I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to new anime. While it's a decent show, this anime still suffers from a lot of the contrived stuff I'm getting super-tired of, like the teacher's spastic behavior and goofy faces (out of place for a serious show like this, I'll add), and Sakura's forced-quiet voice and overly-moe presentation at the expense of her being a totally uninteresting character devoid of personality. Still, even though the premise of the show is fairly bizarre with this "teenagers Battle Royale killing people and each other for no good reason" and its bizarre pseudo-Christian/occult roots (both of which are plot crutches that seem to be so popular these days in Japan), I'm really getting into this show.
BTW, is this the same "Holy Grail" in Catholic mythology, or is this some sort of near-translation? I can't remember the Japanese word for it, but I'm unfamiliar with it. Does the creator of this show expect peple to believe that Jesus is up in heaven rooting for these kids to kill each other? I really don't get this. Then again, I'm sure I'm looking way too deeply into the plot... One of the reasons I like anime is because it's so weird, so maybe I should just swallow this and get on with it.
And now that Saber is displayed on the forum I realized that this will be brought to DVD. I plan to buy it, as long as this show doesn't follow the modern anime pattern of developing a really good show and then giving the bird to the viewers halfway through the show by making all the characters psychotic and ruining the show (made poplular thanks to Evangelion). I'll keep watching this show and see how it turns out, then preorder the DVD and once again prove that fansubs only support the domestic anime industry.
Now I'll just have to wait to get my hands on the domestic Keroro Gunsou DVDs that I hope ADV doesn't manage to mangle.

The Holy Grail is based on the one from King Arthur, I think, but the anime's is unique unto itself.

Jesus has nothing to do with this anime. The "Christian" elements in this series aren't plot crutches or symbolism, just parts of the mythology the series is based on. To be honest, I don't remember anything really "Christian" in this series.

I take it you didn't like Mai HiME? :) I don't think that's really a pattern though... some anime do it, but far from all or even most.
Eh, it doesn't "give the finger" in that sense, but its based on an H-game/visual novel and the anime only covers one of the three scenarios, so some things are hinted at (too stongly at times) but never explained. In the original game, you had to play all three scenarios to find out everything. The anime works fairly well on its own, unless you happen to be a Rin fan and wonder what the heck that little montage means around episode 18.

I dream of Heaven's Feel being animated by KyotoAnimation (though UBW being animated or by Bones would be great too).

Heck yes, I want an ataraxia series, and a Realta nua one too!
I even hope they make a Fate/Zero series which is supposed to take place 10 years before the first series (back in the first holy grail war). Fate/Zero is only a novel so far.

Oh, I am relieved. I'd rather not watch religious stuff in anime, unless it is portrayed accurately.

No, I haven't seen Mai Hime. I don't know that series. So Fate/Stay Night was an H game? I knew it was a game, but I figured it was just another text adventure type of game. I'm glad that they don't pursue this in the anime.
And I'm very relieved that they didn't cheapen Saber's character by making her an object of fanservice and silliness. So far the character remains noble. I like that.

Realta nua is the adapted version of Ataraxia, as it is still an H-game, but like many companies they produce commercial versions for wider release which happen to be more popular due to the wider availability in game shop chains and such instead being limited to shops that cater to adults only product,

OK, I just finished episode 16, but there's something that is too bizarre for me to swallow...
So King Arthur was a chick and nobody noticed? What the heck? I was almost expecting her to be Joan of Arc or something in the SAME GENDER! This is pretty dumb.... I knew that something goofy would come along about halfway through the show and spoil it for me. I'll try to get past this and move on...

King Arthur isn't a real person, I think its a cute twist.
The strange part is just the name, because last I knew Arthur was a guys name-_-; However, to the Japanese it might not sound odd.
But she is called Saber. Thank god characters don't start calling her Arthur.
You know, the main character of Zeta Gundam, his name is a girls name(Camille).

I just read the wiki for Saber here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saber_%28Fate/stay_night%29) It actually makes sense... Since the existence of Arthur has always been unconfirmable AFAIK, it would make an interesting twist that Arthur as we know it is actually a male-centered view of the first queen of England. Perhaps it was a spell of Merlin's that she appeared as a king before her people. Just a thought. I'm up to episode 18 now...

Yeah, I think so. Up to episode 19 or so it doesn't cleary say it, but it's looking fairly evident.

Well, I finished the series last night. I'm definitely going to preorder the domestic release DVD this weekend.
But this isn't the end, is it? It had a typical bittersweet anime ending, but is this the last we'll see of Shiro and Saber?
Since Saber was "his sword," I was almost expecting him to do his "trace on" deal and recreate her back to life... :P It was nice to see Rin alive at the end, but I figured she was done for.
But it still didn't explain how everyone thought that Saber was a man... was she really a man and only represented as a female in the anime flashbacks to keep the character less confusing? It ended up still confusing. Why would Arthur return as a woman? She even had a son... Weird city.

Well, yes and no. The original game/visual novel had three different scenarios (which one you saw depended on the decisions you made) each of which covered different aspects of the story. Each scenario goes a vastly different direction with things and focuses on different characters.
The anime is an adaptation of the main scenario, called "Fate", which focuses on Saber and works the best on its own. That's why the anime vaguely hints at things regarding Rin, Sakura, Rider, and Archer but doesn't go into them. The other two scenarios, "Heaven's Feel" and "Unlimited Blade Works" give more information on them.
I believe the UBW scenario is the "true" ending, so in that sense, this isn't the end. But there isn't some sequal or anything that happens afterward, just alternate story paths.

The patch for Fate/Stay Night is in the works. Actually, the translation portion is already done. (http://mirrormoon.org/fate_stay_night)
There shouldn't be any problems with that site since they only work on the patch and don't provide downloads for the game or anything other than their patches.

Note: That translation is only the Fate scenario. Mirror Moon is aiming to do all three scenarios separately.

You're right, it says "Fate route". In addition to translation, they have to actually stick the text into the game, and that part alone took about a year for Tsukihime.

I look forward to hearing how Bang Zoom will do on the dub. I was expecting more well known VA's but some are rather new. 95% of the time I find Bang Zoom dubs to be great & the best dub company.
I really thought they would use Michelle Ruff for Saber. Michelle Ruff also voiced Arcueid in Tsukihime and I thought it would fit Saber as well. Kate Higgins voices Saber. I'm really not sure about this, the only role I really heard a lot of was Zefiris(Scrapped Princess), but that character is pretty emotionless. Then again Saber is like that as well a lot of the time, so the role could go very well.
Steve Cannon who voices Shiki in Tsukihime I diddn't think would fit Shirou. Shiki was a more depressed character so Steve Cannon was great, but not for Shirou. Sam Regal voices Shirou. And I think he will do a great job, he actually sounds to me very much like a younger David Hayter(not his Solid Snake voice, his normal voice). Sam Regal voice sounds very cool but still young like he did as Yajiro from Grenadier.
Mela Lee as Rin. She hasn't done much, I heard many of her roles but I can't remember her voice. I sort of remember Nina's voice from Ex-Driver & it was pretty hot.
Jennifer Sekiguchi as Illya. Perfect. I guess they could have gone with a more super cute voice like Sandy Fox but I'm glad they diddn't, that wouldn't fit. Jennifer Sekiguchi can do a cute voice & still sound dark & creepy at the same time.
Julie Anne Taylor as Taiga. I know this will be great. Shes great and she has even voiced characters similar like Ayaka from Stellvia(young teacher). And shes great with the scenes where a character uses a lot of crazy engery which Taiga does.
But who voices Sakura? I'll have to search for that one. I hope its Carrie Savage, who voiced Satsuki in Tsukihime. Satsuki & Sakura are very much alike.

If you've been drooling over those Saber figures from Fate/Stay Night, be very careful who you buy one from on eBay. I'm talking about the one with her wearing her armored blue dress and holding a sword. I was just wondering why the auctions for these on YAJ are way more expensive than the ones on eBay, and I wondered if these were perhaps bootleg figures. They did a pretty good job with the packaging and everything. I did a search and found this page:
http://www.marvinryan.com/blog/2006/09/16/fake-figures/
It features side by side comparison pictures of the real figure and the fake one.

Update on patch:
"Dec 18: One major milestone reached!!
Fate route translation: 100%!!
Fate route editing: 100%!!
Image Editing: 100%!!
Pre-beta testing patch constructed!!
Beta testing will commence as soon as tracking system is up and running, and it may also wait until all of us have finished enjoying our holidays ^^
EDIT: Tracker is scheduled to be up around early January. Staff testing will run until then."
So is everything 100% or are they just talking about one route?
I can't wait for the patch.
I watched the first volume(twice actually) and the dub is great. Bang Zoom hardly ever disapoints me, I consider them the best dubbing company.
I'm rather surprised that Saber sounds good & really fits. I diddn't know what to expect.
Jennifer Sekiguchi(voice of Illya) is great with creepy little girls:lol:
Liam O'Brien sounds really cool as Archer.
I noticed right away that Sherry Lynn voices Sakura. Its good to hear her cute voice again^_^ At first I thought it might be too cute but after watching it the second time I really thought it worked out great.

I received the first DVD this week and I'm liking the dub. :) I've unknowingly heard Liam O'Brien's voice in a couple games I've played and in those games I've liked what I heard. Most recently I've heard him voice in Valkyrie Profile 2 where his character is the calm, calculating type. I loved his voice in the game, so when I later found out he'd voice in Fate/Stay as Archer, I was happy! Hearing Liam as Archer has been satisfying. I can't wait to hear "the prayer" later in the series. An English passage voiced in real English, heh.

Got the DVD today, I watched it subbed. Seems like there were a few spots that had some weird use of grammer. It kind of seems like they were trying to make it sound like old english or something, but it just didn't sound right even for that.

I am a mythology, medieval nut who loves rpgs and those types of stories. I can't say I have been keeping up with the latest anime, but I saw something about this and the Holy grail and it caught my eye.

So, I ask you all who know this series well.

Wikipedia always works...
In short, it takes place in an alternate universe, and set during the Fifth (?) "Holy Grail War" - a battle royale between several magicians and their Servants (heroes of legend from past, present, and future) for the Holy Grail, which will grant any of their wish.
It's a serviceable story, but I watched it mostly for the characters, to be honest :P .

I go there if I want to freshen up on something I already have seen, or know about.
I come here, to a community forum to ask what any regular joe of a viewer would think.
You can't compare the two. Also, thanks for the quick reply.
