View Full Version : Will this Hurricane Season be even worse?

Can you see this season being any worse than 2005? I mean, 2004 was surpassed by 05... will 06 be even more horrible?
I say no. I think the 05 season's records will stand for a long time.

I have a feeling that it won't be worse or better. I don't think 05's record will stand for awhile. We've been having some pretty messed up weather lately. I just hope people wise up and evacuate when necessary.

i predict more riots, rape, pillaging, and murder this year too.
Funny, our city flooded a lot in '97. NO ONE stolen, raped, or murdered anyone..... In fact everyone helped everyone....

Our area had some looting but very little all the crime includeing murder, child predation and theft came here from that city which shall not be named.
So far as the season the Farmers Almanac says my area is due for another bad one this year, it predicted Rita would land within a wekk of when it did so look for me to go AWOL in late August or early September.

05 broke soooo many records though. (Most intense Hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin; Wilma. Most intense Hurricane obseved IN THE GULF OF MEXICO; Rita. Katrina was THE COSTLIEST NATURAL DISASTER EVER IN THE US. Most storms in one season. Most storms in one season. Most Hurricanes in one season. Most 24-hour rapid intensification period, 90mb by Hurricane Wilma, I went to bed in the afternoon when it was a Tropical Storm. I woke up and Wilma was all of asudden a CAT.5; and the strongest Hurricane ever observed EVER in the Atlantic. Hurricane Vince is the only hurricane known to make land fall in Europe. It made land fall in Spain.) I could go on and on...

Actually, I've heard from the news and such that this year's hurricane season may be even worse. The water's temperature still isn't normal; they'll continue to come hard. I'm not sure how many records will be broken, but this hurricane season is sure to be devastating.

Did anyone see that typhoon that just threatened to slam into northern Australia? Peaking out near the TOP of the Class 5 hurricane scale with a sustained wind of 218 MPH?!?! That's insane. That's like a tornado a hundred miles wide.

WOW scary :O
Anyway I predict there will be just as many or more I hope none get as strong as 218MPH though that would be devastating.
I hope they all don't make landfall.

Funnily Wilma didn't do nearly as much damage as hurricane Stan to mexican houses. Heck, Wilma was just sitting on Cancun for almost 2 days and mostly the only damage it did was suck away most of the artificial sand. Now the stupid hotels are demanding "sand insurance". Kinda makes one think if this sand sucking thing will become commonplace.
I think this year will have a lot of very powerful hurricanes though perhaps the US will learn that saying "better safe than sorry" about early preventive evacuating costs.
And it's not just about the actul hurricanes themselves, the most damage will be mostly bureaucratic. I don't think anyone who was reading the online news closely during Katrina will forget how people were forced to abandon their pets because evacuees didn't consider pets necesairy and worthy to evacuate (whereas a lot of the smarter people stayed at their damaged homes with their pets as long as possible and avoided the Superdome disaster).
If a similar incident happened to some random southern US city tomorrow, things won't be different from last year. maybe even worse with the budjet costs and all. I wonder if the americans will withstand another "embarrasment" free aid from the mexican army like last year (which sadly was completely ignored by the american media despite serving 3 free meals to several thousand people everyday... including some chubby women asking for more free servings because they liked the foreign dishes. The Papaloapan cruiser visiting the US was the big thing in the mexican media for months).
I also think Mexico won't be spared like earlier years. I think the Yucatan peninsula will get hit badly again. The country can withstand Cancun closing down again and nobody cares about Chiapas, but it will be economic chaos if the ports in Veracruz city are swept away. Acapulco is another city that's highly prone to hurricanes and it could get badly hit which could be another blow since it's another big maritime port.
I'm surprised Cuba was spared so much when Wilma barely touched it. They might not be so lucky this year.

Yeah... Cyclone Monica. It may even be strogner than Typhoon Tip. (Some unofficial sources say it had a pressure of 869 mb. Tip's pressure was 870 mb.) If that pressure is true (869mb) then cyclone monica was *technically* the most powerful tropical system EVER recorded on the face of earth. But, there's no way it compares to Tip . WHen tip was at it's peak, it was half the size of the US, and had sustained winds of 190 mph, with gust over 230. What a Storm!!!

This is because Hurricane Stan was part of a larger weather system. Of the thousands that died during it's landfall, NOAA has contributed less than 100 of the deaths to Stan. Stan was just one part of a much larger system. (Though this doesn't make much sense since they retired stan from the list.)
Also, Hurricane Wilma was a Cat.4 when it made lanfall in Cancun. The eye was VERY SMALL, the smallest ever recorded, 1.5 miles across. The storm's eye was also very tight. This explains the lack of damage. But what saved the most lives was the well-planned evactuations.

Well, since I'm hiding out here in Panama City, Florida next to the AFbase, I'd say that this years Hurricane season will be like all the rest. Go to Home Depot, get my supplies, and wait it out. But this year, if a Cat FOUR comes this way, I'm bookin!! And since my son will be in Biloxi, guess we'll all make the "family outting" thing and do the escape thing all at one time. My brother in law just had his Allstate Hurricane Coverage dropped . He doesn't even live on the beach or in a flood zone. Get this, since Allstate went bust from last years Hurricanes, they put all their insurers into a friggin pot and drew a LOTTO to pick out the names of their policy holders that will get dropped. Fricken nice of them to tell these poor souls this like a MONTH away from Hurricane season. My brother in law said "Yeah, we finally win the fricken lotto..WRONG ONE, tho.."

I think it's possible for there to be more and stronger storms but I don't think there will be more actual damage for the sole reason that New Orleans is just about the perfect Hurricane target, and if you hit it it's literally like scoring bonus points on the "that's f'd up" meter. Of course say another Katrina sized storm hits the city again, it'll do less damage and just move around the flood damaged homes that have yet to be rebuilt.
At any rate, we'll just have to put up with wildfires out here in LA. It's been ages since even a tropical depression has made it this far up the coast.

If a Katrina-Sized storm hit NYC, then NY would be annihalated. Buildings would be left with skeletions... the subways would be flooded, and thousands would die. (You can't evacuate NY in two days.) In order for a Major Hurricane to hit NY, it has to be like the Long Island Express (a hurricane that hit NY and devastated the city a LONG time ago) ... a hurricane moving at close to 100 mph, like a speeding car.

My professors have said 30 feet for a relatively weak hurricane .
What are you talking about? Hurricane Katrina had a 30 ft. storm surge in Biloxi, and that is the highest surge ever recorded in the north atlantic region. Only a Cat.5 or an extremely large hurricane can produce a storm surge of that size.
(Note, some Typhoons make bigger surges; like in Japan, Typhoon Tip caused a 100+ ft. Storm Surge that wiped out the coastline.)

According to NYC OEM (most the CE professors I have are somehow affiliated with it) for anywhere between Cat 2 and 3 parts of lower manhattan, coney island and the rockaways could get 30 foot storm surge.

Lot's of people don't realize that Katrina was only cat.3 at landfall. However, it lost it's power so fast, the storm surge didn't have timeto go down. So it had a 30ft. storm surge in Mississippi... Anyways, your area could get hit it the Hurricane crosses the peninsula, and then curves pack into the panhandle, though you'd only be dealing with a cat.1 if that happened. (It happened twice in 2004.)

Tidusauron12

Yep. Still on the dry side. The afternoon thunderstorms can get bad though. In jacksonville, my brother said they had a severe thunderstorm warning. They had gust up to 50, but in Daytona, we just got some light winds, and a little bit of rain. Our area is sorta' still suffering from drought or whatever. The only thing about it is when Hurricane Frances made landfall, we had winds sustained at about 40, and gusts up to 80. That's the worst weather I've ever seen. A tornado also hit nearby when Frances came ashore. Anyways, I guess we'll just keep watchin' Chris.

I'm slightly disappointed at this year's hurricane season, because my name was on the list for this storm season. I was hoping to get a little bit of fame in history of the most destructive hurricanes ever. But it seems that I won't even get a chance to appear on the big screen since there's barely been any strong activity down there.
Oh well, you win some and you lose some. Doesn't really bother me in the slightest. As a matter of fact, I would rather my name remain unannounced. I don't wouldn't want a storm with my name become the next Katrina. That would both scary and horrible. But the future is unpredictable and I wonder what surprising opportunities our little friend Mother Nature will have in store for us.

Well, last year we got an invasion of strong hurricanes. This year around, we got Above-Normal Heat Waves and Forest Fires out west.

What really gets me mad s that peopel in America are actually dieing from the heat. I read that we got a death or two and a fire in my state. Seriously, i couldn't believe it....
I just hope people don't start looting Air Conditioners

Hurricanes can only keep me interested for so long. I on the other hand, tend to like artistic weather: Lightning Storms & Tsunamis.

I have a book though....so i am saved!
kinda on-topic. After the bad blizzard we get, it will flood pretty bad here.
Seriously...why am i living in a giant flood plain?? (central plains)
i gotta get up on top of the mountains. So when the world sends i may still be dry.

Hurricanes can affect inland flooding if they make it inland enough. Some hurricanes have made it to the plains before, as remnants, and dropped a good 10 inches or so of rain.

The convection seems to be getting around the center of circulation. It seems that Chris could very well become a Hurricane soon.

I don't expect this storm to hit florida now... It'll probably hit Jamaica.

The Tropical storm has become alot better orangized, and winds are up to 65 mph. It will definately become a hurricane... I'm almost 100% sure. Where it goes is the question. If it hits Cuba... it'll be shread apart. It it hit's Jamaica, it might get into the Carribean or the gulf. If it turns north, Miami could take a hit... I just don't know.

Lol. The Weather Channel is good. I just like to listen to the nerds down at NOAA a little more since they are usually more accurate. :P
Anyways, now that I think about it... Kiyomi-San... you might get hit!!!
Just kidding. I'm just watching where it goes for now.... they move so slowly.

Anyone live in Miami or the keys of Florida? You might have a hurricane heading your way... perhaps a Cat.1 or 2. Maybe even a 3.
Edit: Anyways, the Storm is encountering shear on it's northwest side... if won't become a hurricane just yet.

I already put hurricane shutters up on the sides of my house, can't be bothered to do'em all when I have to do everything else in the world. Might as well just leave them up for ever. Keeps my room dark, never have to worry about sun light.

I have the new fiber glass ones..that way when you board up the windows, at least you can still see what the hell just hit your house..
*packs up and looks at map to Canada*

^Hurricane Shutters? Where do you live?
Edit: Sorry Kiyomi-Chan...
Anyways I leave my house normal. If damage happens, I want it done to my house!

The storm has weakened... shear has increased. Wind sare down to 60 from 65. It may weaken further... or it may become a hurricane... I don't know...

OK! THE FINAL WORD!!!
Chris is not forecast to become a hurricane anymor!!! It is forecast to run into Jamaica... and if it survives, go into the gulf or the Carribean!!! So it probably won't have a big effect on anything. (Mountains in Jamaica are so steep... mudslides...)

Chris. XD Anybody who gets killed by that hurricane doesn't get a tombstone.

Oh... I forgot to mention.... It has weakend to a minimal tropical storm... all of the convection is being stripped off of the storm... so it might dissapate over Puerto Rico... and kill hundreds from mudslides... (Just kidding... but still, it might dissapate.)
