Oh, sweet nostalgia. I'm going to give serious thought to buying these, as Voltron was one of the shows that awakened my interest in anime to start with. I wonder if it'll be dub only... I'd say that's most likely, but I'd really like to have the subbed version.

What's Voktron? ;)

I'd much prefer to finally watch Go Lion, though Voltron will bring back lots of memories. I'll purchase them down the road.

Don't see that either.

All I saw were a collection of VHS tapes that looked like home-made copies. At least, that's what was in the linked website's 'store'.

Well, I hope it does come out, right now all I have are some old VHS tapes. It would be nice to have the whole series.

So, what exactly is exciting about this? A couple of second-rate '80s mecha shows available only in butchered American form doesn't strike me as particularly appealing.

Well I guess you all have to wait 2 days to find out if its true. I for one think it is. After it is the offical site.

Am I missing the part where this is a DVD release? All I can find are the DVD box sets released in Austrailia, and I had to go to the Aussie distributor to find that. I couldn't find anything about an R1 release anywhere I've looked. All I see are those VHS videos.

Same here. Back when they aired Voltron on Toonami is really when I started to watch anime even though I didn't know it was anime. I hope it comes out at a reasonable price..

I think it's just a clock counting down to the announcement of when they will release the DVD's I'm not even sure about that to tell the truth .

I think once the clock run's out at 12 noon CST on the 30th of march we will see what is going on.

Well, seeing as DVDAF doesn't even have them listed in their database, I doubt they're coming out. I realize that they're not the end all tell all and they rely on users to update their registry a lot of the time, they usually have the titles listed well before their official release date, so I doubt there's any Voltron coming out on DVD. At least not a legitimate version.

Funny I could say the same about Gundam.

No you can't, for two reasons

1) Gundam is the best thing ever
2) Gundam wasn't butchered for it's American release. Kind of.

I may end up looking into this set, depending on how much it costs

Funny I could say the same about Gundam.

Gundam isn't a 2nd rate mecha series at all. In the 80's it was very much first rate mecha, the most popular in Japan & the most influential. Voltron really is just another super robot anime in that time that was very popular in the US. Gundam was something nobody had ever seen before & revolutionary. Voltron wasn't.

And Gundam wasn't butchered.

Anyway, I'd buy Voltron on DVD when/if its released. I love classic mecha anime.

Leader Desslock

I'd say that I'd strongly consider buying the Voltron box sets (lions only) if they're released on DVD, but I said the same thing about The Transformers and I never bought those sets.

For me, it comes down to priorities. Will a Voltron box set become available around the same time as the Ah! My Goddess box set? If it's a choice between Norns and Lions, I sure as heck ain't goin' home with no Lions, that's for sure. I think that just like the Transformers, Thundercats and Neon Genesis Evangelion, there's always going to be a series I want more than Voltron. Lions are cool, but at the end of the day, they might just end up as a nostalgic rental.

This would be awesome, if it actually said there were DVDs. If anything, it'll just be another announcement saying, "Voltron coming to DVD in 2007."

So, what exactly is exciting about this? A couple of second-rate '80s mecha shows available only in butchered American form doesn't strike me as particularly appealing.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I've seen a bunch of Golion episodes, and while Golion may have blood and death in it, Voltron's story is about 90% more mature than Golion was even able to achieve. We may get an edited series, but at least this is one where something was done right for a change. I'd rather have Voltron over Golion anyday.

Oh, and all of the main characters had top notch voice actors (Michael Bell for example). It was the minor nobodies that had crappy ones.

No offense, for your opinion is your opinion, but you'd rather watch some ****tish angels over Voltron? o_O Why?

And there is nothing better in the world than Transformers. Well, except Godzilla, but nothing else. You missed out on great Transformers DVDs for there will never be quality as good beyond the remastered DVDs.

I guess if you consider watching a boy pull bombs off a giant robot exciting, then yes, it would be. Gundam was a bore to watch, which is why CN canned it.

And Gundam wasn't butchered.

Really? Pry tell me, where can I get legal copies of the original series on DVD with Japanese audio then? Oh, but they have to be Region 1.

Well your ignorant. You can't get legal copies of the Japanese audio no matter what, not even in Japan. Now please tell me, how is the fact that nobody could release the Japanese track means its "butchered"? It doesn't! Your logic doesn't make sense.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe has been planned for 8 DVD releases, each one containing three discs, approximately 15 episodes, and as many extras as we can squeeze in. We're preparing premium special edition packaging, an aggressive video restoration process, and remixed 5.1 audio. The goal is to make Voltron look better than it has ever looked before. We'll keep posting updates here about our restoration work, so check back often!
Voltron: Defender of the Universe DVD vol. 1 hits the street Fall 2006

UPCOMING RELEASES
In addition to Voltron: Defender of the Universe, we are planning to release Hundred Beast King GoLion and Armored Squadron Dairugger XV on DVD starting next year. These releases will be completely uncut and in their original Japanese with English Subtitles. Warning: While Voltron is suitable for all ages, GoLion and Dairugger contain violence and other scenes that may be too intense for younger viewers. Please use discretion. Release dates for GoLion and Dairugger are not yet available, but they will be posted here as soon as possible.

I find this release to be as shocking as they come. I never would of imagined both Go Lion and Dairugger getting licensed. I was a bit bummed out a few days ago because I figured we would only get the edited dub Voltron and all. Talk about a good year. MB is making the impossible possible with these and Tekkaman Blade.

I also really love the 8 DVD set release format with a whopping 3 disks and 15 eps. I'll be buying these as they come out for sure. 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 *Loves the opening theme*

So did anyone else pick up Voltron volume 1? I got mine via Media Blasters' booth this weekend at AWA, but I believe today was the official release date. I think the entire set is well made, from the nice looking tin to the insert keeping all of the disks individually packed. The show LOOKS FANTASTIC and SOUNDS FANTASTIC. And the extras were neat, though I'm hoping future editions will discuss why the trilogy idea was discarded and what happened to the Voltron of the middle universe (have been waiting 20 years to see more of him, ha!). I thought all of the commentary in the special features was good stuff, though that guy with the handlebar mustache was a little bit cheese out, IMO!

I've got 2 more episodes left to watch in the Blue Lion set... then it's going to be a wait for the second collection.

At AWA, the guy from Media Blasters that I bought the set from said they are releasing the sets in the order that the lions come together to form Voltron, so he said the next set will be the Yellow Lion set. (However, while the feet actually get created first in the transformation sequence, the arms actually attach to the body before the legs and feet do... but that's just something I noticed when I was watching... I know what the guy meant.)

So for all you Voltron experts, here's a couple of questions:

1) How many episodes of the Go Lion Voltron are there before the series transitions to the Vehicle Voltron? When foes Vehicle Voltron start? If they do 15 episodes per set and there are 5 lions, that makes 75 episodes of Lion Voltron... that seems like an awful lot to me!

2) Around which epsiode does Sven reappear?

3) How many episodes of Vehicle Voltron are there? I really don't remember seeing it more than a handful of times as a kid, and I remember Pidge's brother was on the team as well as a girl named Ginger who flew the red plane that attaches to Voltron's chest (don't ask me why I remember her.) Also, didn't World Events see that Lion Voltron was a lot more successful and go back to the Japanese creators and ask them to make more Lion Voltron episodes? Were these aired AFTER the Vehicle Voltron episodes? And if so, do you think Media Blasters will release them in that order or do you think they'll just lump them in with the Lion sets being released first? Or is this just a rumor anyway?

4) Think we'll ever see anything of that missing "third Voltron," the Voltron of the Middle Universe? They show him in some of the special features but just briefly... I was wondering if anything was every actually produced for this, even if it was just one episode to "test" the show out.

I think the tin collector's version (the one I got) was released early only at Best Buy and a non-tin version was released early only at Wal-Mart. This month I picked up the Blue Lion and Yellow Lion collections, I got the tin collector's editions. :)

They retailed between $27-$29 CAD, tax included. Much lower than I expected.

The packaging is really beautiful, a lot of love went into it. If you haven't seen them, the tins are embossed with the lion heads, on the back in a picture of the pilot, a nice, cleaned up picture.

Inside is a fold-out case, each set uses the lion's colours primarily. They have a constellation lion and the pilot standing in front of it, and the DVDs themselves are printed with the lion heads. The case the holds them has really cool art inside too.

The menus are simple yet functional, and the bonus features are interesting interviews with WEP and the various people who brought us Voltron. Did you know Voltron was the third show in the US to be recorded in stereo sound?

The show looks great. The animation is dated, since it's pretty old, but they have cleaned up what they could. I am very happy with the DVDs, so happy I wrote a letter to Media Blasters thanking them profusely.
