Now here's the base of "the tower" -- the excess of my collection that I haven't yet bothered to buy a decent bookshelf for. (Yes, there are quite a few bootlegs in there from when I was a n00b who didn't know any better. There were more that have since been replaced by the real thing.) Award points for yourself if you can identify all of the titles badly pictured here (this was the best of three attempts at photographing BTW).

And here's the summit. Note that not everything in the tower is anime. There are some really crappy live action movies I got for two bucks each that I've just sort of left piled there, as well as some American childhood curiosities. That white thing on top is the ceiling.

There are a bunch of anime titles interspersed with our regular old movie collection. I haven't had time to sort any of this out. If it were intelligible you could see that we have a few duplicates in there; I don't know how that happened but I suspect that we have a few friends who are wondering where their DVDs have wound up.

Here's my collection. The only thing that's really changed are the amount of artboxes I've added due to awesome sales at a certain online retailer. I don't plan on getting any anime for Christmas mainly because I haven't asked for any. *gasp!* I need to seriously focus on watching the stuff I have already.

I bought new shelves today since I had run out of space in my bookcase. The new stuff I was buying was laying untop of the dvds in said bookcase, so I had no idea that I had so many dvds. (To me at least)

Sorry about the flash on some of them. I really do need to get a new digital camera. I gotta say though, it feels so great to see the end product after spending 6.5 hours building the 2nd shelf, sorting everything in alphabetical order and then putting it up.

Thanks. I do have a ton of artboxes as well, its just that I really don't have anywhere to put em, so they're in boxes in the closet. Honestly, before I had a car payment, I was spending $800 a month on anime (never paying more than $15 a disc), i recently dropped $500 at a certain 50% off sale, but that has been the most i've spent on anime in a while. Unfortunately now that i'm paying rent on top of a car payment and other bills, it seems like I will probably not be buying too much anymore.

well i don't know if there will ever be updated pics of my collection.. Ive recently become a closet fan -_-; ill never quit watching but at this point in time i am done buying.. and Ive already sold 85% of my collection.. its a sad thought but i don't think things will ever be the same between me and anime.. its kinda like a divorce, i love it but i have to stop.. ill still visit this forum regularly and input when i feel like it :P

its a lot to do with the fact that i have a lot of friends that look down on it, but it also has a lot to do with my lack of time and interest.. i am always at work.. I'm a manager now so i have at least 40 hours a week -_-; .. maybe 60.. so i never have time.. and when i have time away from work and school I'm with my girlfriend or my many many friends.. and even when i have time i tend to find something else to do, and when i force myself to watch some i lose interest and fall asleep :P and the reason im selling it all is because i need the money for other things.. believe me the anime was the last to go :lol:

and also i ment EXTREMEST closet fan :P
and i would like to point out that i will most definitely not stop watching.. its the buying im done with

It's interesting to see this transformation since I remember some of your first posts (amazingly enough). But you're absolutely right about the whole forcing yourself to watch it and losing interest..in fact i own so much anime and I work about 60 hours a week on my own business so i hardly ever have time to watch it. But goddamn i love collectin it and i know for sure ill watch it later. I actually did a report on the different levels of Anime-fandom for my Pop Culture Anthropology class in college and the biggest group is the "closet anime fan" who can't bear to be seen watching anime simply because it is weighted down with pre-conceived notions of pokemon and yu-gi-oh encompassing ALL anime. Truth is tho, anime is gaining much wider acceptance and popularity in Video games, recent movies, and many other areas. It's sad so many anime fans would succumb to friends looking down on them for enjoying something like anime. I'm 23 and have never felt "awkward" about watching anime or proclaiming that i watch anime. And, take into account im not some "typical" uncleanly, overweight, zit-filled-face anime fan. I work out each day and am a health freak as well as a hygiene freak. So in closing, ye i totalllyyy understand not having time to do much and having a girlfriend is ALWAYS a downside (unless she enjoys anime like mine does, which i don't think i could have a girlfriend that DIDN'T like anime..just wouldn't work for me). But don't be discouraged by any of your friends disliking anime. In most cases, they just haven't found the right one to watch ;) End of rant/blog post lol

yea ill be fine ^_^ my best friend/brother have recently combined our video game collection so that's where a lot of the money from the anime is going so ill defiantly be fine.. now we just have to find the classic stuff we need -_-;

This happened to me with my collection. I sold off everything I didn't think had re-watchability/wasa favorite for me. And am now MUCH happier with my collection as a result. I have dropped three whole shelves+ of anime down to half of one of the most amazing anime I love and like to re-watch. I reccomend this for any anime fan.

not exactly a bookshelf but a wall shelf like the "boxes 1" pic. it collapsed one morning and woke me up. it did have a lot of heavy series on it though but no noticeable damage to any of them since they was a small pile of clothes and empty cardboard boxes there on the floor (being a slob was a good thing for once!). i just hope the other shelf doesn't collapse too since it's right over my cable box and bluray player.

but yeah, i do love the artboxes. back when the collection was smaller i had them turned side out to display the artwork. but as space became more cramped then i was forced to turn them around. if i had the talent then i would've loved to make my own like SonRyu.

I have the same problem. Being such an avid artbox collector/buyer, I ran out of space long ago ... Yet that doesn't stop me from buying them! :P

Yea, Hakugei, .hack and Evangelion were ones that could've been placed in various letters. Of course, I have "My Neighbor Totoro" in the T's, but i guess since "My Neighbor" isnt really a subtext like "Neon Genesis", it probably should go in the M's.

Either way. Thx everyone for the comments. I have a closet half full of artbooks that I plan on taking a picture of once I get them all setup.

Lol, what really helped me was when I realized I added over 100 anime dvds in under five months and I don't really have the room to add anymore right now^_^

To Bezerker, mlisette23 and Sarky, your collections look wonderful. ^_^ While I really like my setup, part of me wishes I had the wall space for a shelving unit like Berzerker and Sarky have.

With all these people posting their collections recently, I figured it was time for an update to mine. A warning for those using dial-up, the file sizes are a larger than I've done them in the past, so loading them might take a bit longer.

Besides adding new DVDs, I also moved some things around, alphabetized the wallshelves and packed more singles together to save on space.

Now, hopefully in the near future I'll get my hands on another shelf to move the rest of the DVDs over to the other room. The idea of turning the room into a media library is finally starting to look like it. And before you say anything, yes, those two shelves are lined up to each other (at the base). Unfortunately they are a bit crooked. Why? I'm not sure.

Badass collection as always, my friend. Any reason why you created a little "hallway" in between your shelves rather than lining them against the wall? I'd be afraid of walking into them and knocking them over ... But I'm kind of clumsy to begin with! xD

Awesome collection CMC :) I must ask though, where did you get those 5 row shelves? Or do you know what brand they are? I ask because I too have a slanted roof in my room and it's near impossible it seems to find good shelves for it.

OK first, I didn't line them up along the wall since I have other plans for that area. I'm having some custom shelves made for the boxes that hold my comics and that's where they will go. The boxes are already sitting along the wall, about 24 short boxes. Also, I didn't want to block the air vents or electrical outlets. And I've had it planned out to be like shelves in a library for the longest. But yeah, it did occur to me to line them down the wall. Oh, another factor that kept me from going down the wall was that the shelves are different brands.

As for the shelves I'm using here's what I've got. I have one Venture Horizon Regular Triple Media Storage Tower (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12206370&sourceid=08527369932248417800) and then I have two PREPAC - Triple-Width Library-Style Media Shelves (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5368942&st=prepac&lp=10&type=product&cp=1&id=1051384082587) that I cut down by cutting six inches from the bottom with a chop saw. Otherwise the Prepac shelves would have been too tall for me. Also I don't recommend the Venture Horizon shelf unless you get some wood and cut it to size for the adjustable shelves since what comes with it is too thin and weak to actually hold a full shelf of DVDs. 23 1/4" wide by 5 3/4" deep is what I measured the individual adjustable shelves at. I've yet to cut some wood to size but for the time being I found that doubling the shelves up and using the supplied pegs on top and bottom of the shelves lessons the bowing.

If you get the Prepac shelves and cut them down you will have to drill the the mounting holes in the bottom of the vertical boards deeper. Which I suggest you drill them before cutting them. Cutting 6 inches off of them made the total height abouit 47 inches. If need be more could be cut off, but not much, maybe another 3 inches.

And the shelf behind the couch is completely custom. My neighbor built that for me.

One problem here is the assumption that the goal of every anime fan is to become an obsessive otaku, when really... a lot of us do have lives outside of anime. Some people are collectors (and hey, if that's what they want to spend their free/entertainment money on, that's their choice), some people are just occasional watchers, some people find inspiration to become artists/anthropologists/fluent in Japanese, and some eventually drop it.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying anime and having it be one of your hobbies. It's another thing for it to take precedence over everything else (job, bills, friends, family).

Your obsession with everything revolving around otakus and otakuism is creepy.

I just ordered Case Closed Season Four (NOT VIRIDIAN) like 1-3 days ago from Amazon.com, I should be getting it in the mail sometime next week according to USPS's Online Tracking Info.

The Box Set was alright, but the Disc Holder things inside the DVD Cases were broken, the DVDs had fallen out, and now they won't stay still in the cases anymore.

Looks like I'm gonna have to buy this again from another website, sigh :(.

I refuse to buy the Viridian version, I hate the packaging/cover art and it clashes with my original box sets for seasons 1-3 & 5.

^It's easy enough to replace cases. Places like Staples or Office Depot sell DVD cases (regular-sized and thinpaks). Just pick up a small pack of cases so you can replace the broken ones and have some on hand in case this ever happens again.

That's about the size of my collection: but I don't own nearly as many long series. The longest series I own is the Twelve Kingdoms; and that's only 45 eps long. :)

Not much, not compared to my friends, but they have a paper route! I have no job. >.> I'm 18, going to College, maybe I should get a job but haven't. The point being is anime DVDS are EXPENSIVE!!! >.> I got the DVDs when going to anime cons with my friends or some I asked for on my birthday or got with birthday money. It's real hard to get that many. My parents don't mind getting me books or manga, but I can't ask them for something as expensive as anime DVDs! When I get a job I want to get more DVDs, sometimes I get a little jealous of my friends, but then tell myself not too, I have loads of things I love and to be grateful for! When I have a job I'll get more DVDs. Until then, now and then is fine for me, plus I can borrow from friends. ^^

^ not only do you alphabetize (which I don't see many collector's doing), but you actually do it the same way I do too; punctuation (.hack), then numbers (3x3, 5 cm/sec), then letters :thumbsup:

Alphabetizing just makes it so much easier to find what I want to watch. There are a few instances where things are slightly out of order for shelf space purposes. It sucks when you get a division in a shelf only to have a box set that's next in line to barely not fit into the space left. I also don't like to separate a series too much. Such as reaching the end of a shelf and then having to go to the next one down. But sometimes it must be done; shelf space gets to be pretty important when you're running out of it. Other times something may be out of order is down to preference. A few examples, I put Legend of Black Heaven in the B's, All Purpose Culture Catgirl Nuku Nuku in the N's and Irresponsible Captain Tylor in the T's.

I really need to replace all of the shelves. They've been through hell over the years having to be moved so much and they're falling apart. I had to remove the backing to two of them and straighten them out since they absorbed some moisture and warped when they were stored in a container for a few months.

i really need to update mine one day, but i just get too lazy. i need more shelving capability but i got less than a prison cell's space to actually get any up. a lot of single dvds are just sitting in old order boxes (had to move em out of the way to get to some i wanted to watch) yet i don't have the heart to organize em. :(
