Anyone have this happen?
Its odd, its not like I left it on long at all, I pretty much just turned it on & played some Resident Evil 2 on my old PSX and I couldn't save so I took the card out & it was very hot & melted with big holes where the chips are. Its a clear transparent card so I can see that the chip areas overheated. I got the card free from a friend long ago, its old & cheap I guess. Did my old system do this & was it my old card? I don't know if I should put another card in that system if its gonna melt my card.

i dont know, i never had any problems like that, even after playing for a long time. normally you get heat liek that from a short or something, so maybe the card was defective.

I used the card for years & nothing happened, I diddn't know a card can overheat that badly to melt the plastic-_-;

maybe it was your console? do you have a PSX, or a PS1(the small white one).
Actually, come to think of it, something like this happend to me. But it wasent my PSX, it was my Playstation Yarouze.

do you have the system in a venthilated place (i.e. on tile or a cabinet with a lot of room to breathe), or do you keep your PS1 on the carpet floor of your room (like I did for four years)? If the system isn't venthilated, it will overheat because it has no fans (though it does have vents). If it overheats, I suppose it's possible that the heat had nowhere to go but through the mem card slot, and poof, no more mem card. It's a long-winded theory, but it's better than nothing I suppose.

Yeah I put it on a carpet floor. I'm gonna move it-_-; But I only had it on for maybe 15 minutes, I'v had that on for lots of hours & never had anything like this happen.

Its a first model type of the PSX, not PSOne.

You win the internets for playing RE2 Levon. :D
It has happened to me before, mine was one of those memory cards with alot of room.(Third party deelie's.) So I just asumed it was a shoddy memory card.
Very strange.

Everyone and their mom has done that. I just finished a play through Leon's B game last week.
Anyway, Levon, was it a third party, unofficial product? Or was it actually Sony licensed/authorized?

I can't tell, no brand is listed. Just says "Memory Card" and it really does look like a Sony card actually. I had another card in the console at the same time & nothing happened to that, and it was a much more cheap card too.

Definitely take it off the carpet if it's overheating that much... I'd be worried about fire risks too...! Put it on top of something hollow if you're going to continue using it...

Well leaving it on the carpet is a bad thing in itself, thats normally bad for any console. But, if you had another mem card in it at the same time, and nothing happened, i can only think of two possible answers.
1. Something internal, the way it was designed, had a part the generated more heat by the mem card you were using, and wasent getting proper ventalation.
2. The mem card went bad.

I don't know much (i.e. anything) about PS1 hardware, but... is it really possible it's the memory card's fault? I mean, memory cards don't normally generate heat, or draw more than a standard amount of power, do they? In which case, I think I'd hunt down another 2nd hand playstation rather than risk another memory card (the console, 2nd hand, is cheaper than memory cards, these days...)

Actually it was on a rug with a very flat surface. Not a fluffy carpet, so I thought it was fine.
I think it must have been the card that was bad since nothing happened to the other one.
Oddly enough I found out the card still works-_-; I copied the data onto another memory card & I won't use that melted card again.

They really arn't worth anything. I must have had 5 Playstations in my life, broke one, my brother lost one(funny story), returned my PSOne when I got a PS2, & sold a few others. I also once bought a PSX for $7 at Goodwill but then my brother without even asking me(when I bought it!) sold it. I was pissed so he got one of his friends to give away a PSX for free, the one I have know. I'm gonna try keep this one for a change-_-;

I'm sad to say that I have yet to really play RE2. I rented it once around when it came out and I died before I could even get to a save point. Yeah, I sucked really bad. Then again, I was like 10 and it was my first survival horror game. I've played others since then and I'm sure I could do it now. I'll have to check for it the next time I'm at GameCrazy.

Thats impossible.. unless you live in a heatsink enviroment and you have no AC and or .. of course.. you left it on the carpet?..

No its very cold(I'm in Michigan). Well I left it on a really flat surface rug, I can't see that affecting it really. I diddn't have the PSX on that long ethier so the machine wasn't hot, only the card was.

That odd, sorry to hear. Since the PSX cant generate that muich heat to successful melt plastic, Id have to say its a faulty Mem Card. Thats what happens when you purchase off the wall hardware.
PS- Damn people still play with a pSX ^_^. Mind boggling.

The only thing that happened to me was similar,i was also using a clear memory card, when one day all the data i had on it erased.I had to play every game i had all over,to get where i was before.
I can imagine its the manufacturer, mine got a error on it,and when i tried to call the dealer to find out what was wrong.I found out that the dealer went out of bussiness years ago,so i only rebuilt the RPG files i had.

Most of these thing seem to occur when the system is laying on a carpet while being on for a long time. I've never had anything like this happen to me, but I've had weird things of my own. I remember my Dreamcast power switch was screwed up and I had to use one of my shorter barbells (without the weights on) to keep the power button down. Then all of a sudden one day it was back in working order. *shrugs*

Sorry to hear about your loss! That sucks, did you lose a lot of saved games?
A real Sony card has the word "Play Station" embossed at the top at the end that goes into the console, and the word "Sony" embossed at the other end. It sounds like you have a generic one which can work but sometimes they blow up. I remember hearing a while back, that a Sony memory card has an expected life span of 7 years.
Check the official Sony site (http://www.us.playstation.com/peripherals.aspx?id=4) and it may tell you the lifespan. If you purchase a Sony-branded card and it dies within 90 days, SCEA will replace it. I know this doesn't apply to your situation, but it's something to keep in mind if you buy a new one.

I'm not so sure I'd say it's the most challenging of the series for me. I've yet to play Resident Evil 3 or Code Veronica X however and I've played Resident Evil 1 Remake, Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 4. I will say trying to get a A Rank on Hunk and Tofu the 4th Survivor mini game is a big pain in the you know what if you know what I mean. I've done everything on Resident Evil 2 except doing the Battle Mode, which personally I'm not too interested in doing at the moment and I've attempted to beat both Hunk and Tofu the 4th Survivor. The only way I could do it with Hunk is using some unlimited ammo code, since I was playing the Gamecube version. Even with that, I had gotten only a C rank and I don't think I'll ever be able to do it with Tofu, so I gave up on it. The last time I played the game was about two months ago just before Final Fantasy VI Advance came out at the beginning of February.

I thought PS-X didn't have any ventalation system at all, at least I can't remember of one and my memories tell me that was one of the problems PS-X had

It has vents, but no actual fan, or anything like that. Systems just didn't, back then. The first mainstream system I remember having a fan was the Sega Dreamcast, and that was a novelty. I mean, I was genuinely surprised to see it there. Then suddenly it became standard.

I would say it was probably a chip on the card that burned out. I went briefly to electronics school, and once melted a toasted many a IC chip. Once, when working with some diodes I hooked up some wires wrong, and melted them so that there was only metal leads sticking out, as everything between the metal leads had melted off.

At least your memory card didn't cause your whole Playstation to short out. It was a new Playstation too. I haven't bought anymore Playstations of any kind after that... which has its pros and its cons.

Never happened to me,even when the console felt hot after hours of play. What did happen toward the end of my PS1 gaming is my whole memory card would be deleted, and i would loose saved data.
