Yeah... there new album "MY FOOT" Is pretty good. I've become fond of the song called "Third Eye" and of course "MY FOOT." This band was considered a classic back then, In Japan at least. ;)

Yea...

As for me, they are one of my favorite bands. Manabe is comparitivly(?) one of the best guitarists I've ever heard.

My Foot is excellent, and my favorite song would have to be One Life. The solo in it brings me to tears, and the songs is so great!

I supose if anyone has any song requests i could host em on my website. I think it should be fine since you can't DL em, just play em. But i can only upload about 10 songs at a time, so just give me requests and ill put em up. The Pillows is my favorite band, and i was lucky enough to get to go see them Live at the Knitting Factory in New York, and i have Ride on Shooting Star and Little Busters on my comp from when i recorded it with my camera.
I am also a big fan of thier music and can play most of thier songs on my Guitar.

Another favorite song is Another Morning. The use of the bell-like instruments in that song sounds so cool. Hybrid Rainbow is also great--the solo is awesome. For me, I like all the members equally. Manabe is a mad guitarist, Sawao's vocals are amazing(nothing like hearing him scream "Can you feel" at the top of his lungs during Hybrid Rainbow), Sato is awesome at drums(*cough* Paper Triangle), and Jun, though not as well known as the other members is crazy at bass as well.
Though I've not haerd all of the albums(pretty close!), out of all of the ones I've heard, I like Fool on the Planet, My Foot, Runners High, Please Mr. Lostman, and Thank you, My Twilight the best. I really wanna here their first albums with Kenji Ueda.
As for their gear, Sawao's Tele is my favorite, along with Manabe's sunburst Strat.(I like it so much,I was compelled to buy one!). But their others are cool too. Especially Manabe's Fender Mustang.
Just wanted to keep this thread alive!

I've recently become VERY fond of Advice. I mean, I've always liked it, but the more I hear thos sweet riffs, especially the sliding...it just souns so great.
I', perfecting my newly learned "No Self Control", so I'm also listening to that a lot.
Plus of course the My Foot album and Fool on the Planet.
Also, though I never really enjoyed Penalty Life as much as most albums, I've loved playing and listening to "I Know You" and "Super Tramploine School Kid".

I'm really hooked on their My Foot CD atm.
My Foot is a masterpiece in itself, while backed behind Mighty Lovers and So Long Universe, Rock'n'Roll Sinners and Gazelle City, etc.
It's just wonderfull.
Manabe really shows on this album, along with everyone else of course.
The riff to Gazelle City is so cool sounding.
Manabe's Mustang sounds awesome in So Long Universe
and the Explorer sounds great in My Foot.
I Love The Pillows! :)
Sayonara Universe=new fave!!!

Yea, and believe me, my arm kills after one play of that song. Normally, i can do about songs in a row befor i have to take a break, but man, the chords in this song, its like a neverending sea of powerchords, riffs, and pulls. Oh, and dont get me started on the Solo's, it took me half a month before i could even make it through one of these. I recently took a break yesterday for Advice, cause i normally play it about every two or threee days, but i was so hooked on Enter Sandman by Metallica, i couldnt stop playing. Also finished the Tab for Craxy Sunshine, i couldnt make it all the way before lol ._.;

Hooked on No Self Control atm, along with the My Foot songs still...but No Self Control, wow!
I mean, not only is there a catchy chorus full of "Oh Yeahs", but all of the lyrics are great...and the bass/guitar harmony is great. Perfecting it on guitar along with some other random stuff, pretty soon I'm starting the My Foot stuff, can't wait to import the official band score book...

^O.O Explain! Please!

 My Foot is atm my favorite song, as you can tell it changes every other day. Manabe's work in the background is amazing when you actually listen hard, it's really pretty fast.
As well as Sayonara Universe, great intro.

*faints*
Were they nice, did they speak fluent English, etc. etc.? Maybe going to far, but pics of the autographs, or of them at the con? Yes, I'm obsessed, sorry.

PS..I totally reccomend there non-FLCL stuff. Not that their FLCL stuff is bad, but they're stuff that's not from the show is great also. If you can't import, get Penalty Life-they're domestic release. Not they're best album IMO but a great one at that.

I love Sawao's eglish in the songs..."Ride on shooting staw" for example...it gives it such..pizaaz(?).
Anyway, hooked on Midnight Down atm. Guitar part is awsome, and the lyrics are great.

Yea, i shook Sawao's hand at the club in new york. I didnt bring my DVD's though ._. When i go see them again next year i am definatly gonna remember. I like alot of thier non-FLCL music, but i love the OST's the most.

Right now I'm still lovin My Foot, but into the whole CD start to finish...what a great lineup.
Every solo on every song amazes me each and every time I hear it.
I'm working on perfecting Midnight Down, Juliet, and practically done with perfecting No Self Control, just a tweak or two...
Midnight Down, what a great song. And Juliet's intro is so fun to paly. So is Midnight Down.
I'll finally get to the My Foot stuff soon...My Foot will be first since I have the tab on hand.
For those of you who've heard the My Foot stuff:
What do you think of the "new" stuff as compared to the "old" stuff. Old as in 1998-My Foot. Not as far back as 90's My Life and such, as most of that stuff has a bit more jazzy sorta feel to it...Let's say No Self Control-My Foot. If you only know their FLCL stuff, what is your fave?

EDIT:ABSOLUTELY LOVE "AIR RESISTER". Sounds like an American 60's song.

kenshinbebop
April 10th, 2006, 05:45 PM
Sorry for the double post...

As of now, I can't get enough of their slow songs. Let's See If It's True or Not, The Scar Whispers~No One Is In Paradise, etc. I love how their music is so diverse like that. They have their slow songs, rock, their earlier stuff has some jazziness to it, etc.
Plus I still love their new stuff.
Air Resister <3.

I have totally remade my judgement of the Penalty Life album.

Lately I really got into it. I Know You is great, I've always like it though. Lately, I've been interested in Mole Town Prisoner and The Scar Whispers, No One is in Paradise.
It's not that I ever disliked Penalty Life, but it has definately moved up the charts a bit from where it was. Not that there is that long of a list seeing as there are lot of ties because they are all so good. All of their albums are tied in my top 5 favorites.

Getting my new guitar this weekend...thinking about a cheaper Les Paul knock off so I can have that Penalty Life album sound. I'm learning Terminal Heavens Rock, Dead Stock Paradise, and I Know You, so it seems fitting to have the right sound....
ANYWAYS, hope ya'll were luckily enough to grab tix to their June show. If so, I'll see ya there! I'll be there opening night, June 26.
I'm currently listening to the Penalty Life album, My Foot, and Fool on the Planet(mostly for the hidden track"secret slogan")

Heh, yeah I was surprised at their stokc as well. They have a lot of the good ones. Am getting an import shipment in acouple of days containing Happy Bivouc and TYMT.
Can't wait...200 pillow's songs on my iPod and counting. :) This is also coming with my Namikaze Satelite and Tabibito Beginner CD by Snowkel(?). Great stuff.:D

The Solo to My Foot is mad sweet. I never realized how fast it acctually was 'till I learned it. To keep up with Manabe on the recording is a bit challenging, but I got it. Not to sound modest or anything.
The bass line is pretty fast as well.

Listening to Thank You, My Twilight album as of now. Learning that sweet intro to TYMT, plus I'm learning Rain Brain, Come On Ghost, and IRENE. I love how IRENE has that techno kinda feel to it.

PS:Their June 26/27 show at the Tap Bar section of the Knitting Factory NY has been reschedualed to a one night show on June 22 in the main ballroom section. Apparently a lot of people are going. :)
Anyway, word has it that the June 26/27 tix you already have will be honored as tix to the 22 show, so you don't need to get other ones, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

My foot is my new favorite song.

Anyone know where I might be able to find a translation?

kenshinbebop
May 25th, 2006, 12:40 PM
pirouzu.net is my main resource. It is my faveorite fansite. It has lyrics, most with translations....tabs, forum, images, discography...etc. And tehy have a translation there...but I'll copy and paste here anyway...:
My Foot-The pillows(courtesy of pirouzu.net)

I realize it's no one's fault
Ultimately I'm still a stranger
Even when I dream the same dream swarming in the light
I just feel uncomfortable

A love song that disappeared in the wind
A poster that wouldn't stick to the wall
I hold the present I failed to give in my arms

I'm still watching my advancing toes
I don't worry about the rain or the puddles
I'll soon be dry
Until the day that I stop
Like an adventurer, my foot
I'll keep following the roadless road

I stole the passport I yearned for
Through the opening of the door, but it's already useless
Even when I dream of defeating the city and laying down
I only give an empty laugh

A fandango that speeds the night
A rooster that wants to fly
I vow to reunite with the eskimo who awoke in the desert

I can still see my eternal rival
His escaping back, ten steps ahead of me
Looks a lot like me
Like a challenger who will never give up
I'll always be running, my foot
I click my heels

Wherever I am, I'm out of place
A lostman who talks to himself more and more
Even though I'm not invited, I memorize my words of refusal

I'm still watching my advancing toes
I don't worry about the rain or the puddles
I'll soon be dry
Until the day that I stop
Like an adventurer, my foot
I'll keep following the roadless road
I click my heels - let's go

I absolutely love this song...its so catchy, no?

When you, or if you were to try and get a friend or family member to like the pillows, what would you give them? In album terms. Basically, what is their best album? Your opinion of course. I would give them either Thank You,My Twilight or Please Mr. Postman. As for an explanation, TYMT is a great example of their diversity of styles, as songs like Irene(My Beautiful Sun) has a techno/dance type of beat, while stuff like Babylon Versus Angel shows their rock. Then you have Rookie Jet, which shows off their fun side, such as Super Trampoline School Kid.
The more I think about it, I'd give PML more to someone who is already familiar with the pillows, becasue it is more of a bridge that shows both examples of their early stuff, then starts with their present stuff. So instead of PML I'd give them My Foot. Truly an instant classic, startin with song 1, My Foot, all the way to the last song, Gazelle City.
Then of course there is the FLCL OST's....

On another note, extremely happy to be going to their upcoming concert in NY. So happy it's part of their MY FOOT tour, so they'll be playin their new stuff.
Can't wait.

Ta fer now. :)

http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/VainDog/

And for those of you, if any, who want it..heres an in depth review ofthe night:

It started out with some up-tempo music in a dark room. It's loud, hot, and packed. The pillows come out, and the volume increases by 10x. There is a lot of screaming and clapping. Sawao says some stuff adn they start off the wonderful night with Stalker. Afterwords he says something along of the lines of..."Why do you like the pillows? You have good taste!" Everyone laughs and cheers. They move onto Advice, Rock'n'Roll Sinners, and I Think I Can. Then he adds onto what he was saying..."You like the pillwos because you like good music!" Not cocky, just proffesionally..to get the crowd pumped. They move onto Blues Drive Monster, Air Resister, Little Busters, My Foot, and The Thrid Eye. Sawao announces the band. Jun(bass) says something alnog the lines of..."I am very sad..." (Crowd...WHY?) " I am sad because Japan an USA are out of World Cup. BUT, I am happy to be here." *cheers and applause*
Manabe says " It is great to be here, I hope we have a good night."
*more cheers and applause*
Shin says " New York..in Japanese....means take a bath!" *laughs*
"I love takle a bath!" *cheers/ applause*
They go onto Beautiful Morning With You, Deadstock Paradise, Terminal Heavens Rock, Sleepy Head, Ride On Shooting Star, Last Dinosaur, and Hybrid Rainbow. They exit the stage saying "Thank you." And everyone is still. Suddenly the cheer breaks out.."ONE MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG!" They come back out followed by LOUD cheers and applause. They play an encore of Funny Bunny and Crazy Sunshine. Leave again. Again the cheer. They come BACK OUT for a final encore of ONE LIFE. Believe you me, it is absolutely fantabulous live, as were al lof the songs. I have a video of it, but stupid photobucket isn't letting me upload it, I'll get back to ya though.

The merchandise was sweet...keychains, stickers(including the ones that atre on their guuitars), a Hybrid Rainbow shirt, a Buster-kun shirt, and a Rock'nRoll Sinners shirt. Also, the domestic release of MY FOOT...a couple of weeks early. I got like 2 of everything.

All and all, it was a great show. My only regret was no autographs...I had to go get my car which was in a parking garage schedualed for us to come pick it up at a certain time. :(

10/10 show guys, cathc them on the rebound...hopefully. :)

When I get my new Jagmaster, I'm gona put Manabe's sticker on it. It'll look like an identicle twin to Manabe's guitar. Squire Jagmaster with that Nine Miles sticker that comes with the sticker set...it'll be jsut like he has. :D

Yeah, when they come back I'll deffinately wanna stick around for autographs. MY Band Score and maybe my pickgaurd. Or Please Mr. Lostman or Smile, some good CD...in that case all of them.

Right now I'm listening to Smile. Great song, sweet guitar part. And Calvero...short and sweet solo.

Seconded. And My Foot HAS one of the coolest solos.

I just finished learing "Konojo wa Kyou." Really cool song, pretty old, but great nonetheless. I REALLY wanna learn Strange Chameleon, but looking through it in the Band Score, it looks a bit tuff. I'll get to it after Thunder Whales Picnic and the Beatles "Drive My Car".

I can't wait to get the My Foot band score. Just gotta wait till HMV gets it in stock.

play both parts(Extremely hard on a song like this) Or play only one part.

Personally, I don't think it really works to well.

Hybrid Rainbow is great. I'll always love that song. a couple months ago, me and my other friend who plays Guitar went up to Sam Ash and played Crazy Sunshine, Little Busters, and Blues Drive Monster as a Duet. It was great. They had a Strat on display that I used. It was kickass. Of course most anybody there didn't know the song let alone the band :P

I just got Happy Bivouac and Another Morning, Another Pillows today. Sweet stuff. Excelent mix of music on AM,AP. It's got all the B-Sides from old to new albums, so it's great to hear the variation through time.

Happy Bivouac is great. The titl song is awesome, but my favorite song of the album would have to be the ode to the bassist from the Noodles. Kim Deal. Excellent song.

I plan on getting Synchronized Rockers, the tribute album, soon. I've heard previews. Mr. Children and Bump of Chicken have some great covers...

Also, I'm lookin everywhere to find their latest single Gazelle City:Atomic Age remix. The onyl place I've seen it is their official store... :/

No real news up...waiting patiently for a new album, which Manabe says in a recent interview "Is sure to be great". Can't expect any less from the great pillows, eh?

pillows thread, REVIVE!

Not much to talk about actually...I got the My Foot bandscore, extreme sweetness.

They'll be on tour in Japan with Mr. Children for all of you out there that are currently in Japan. Tickets'll probably be hard to comeby seeing the popularity of both bands..though it would seem Mr. Children is more popular than the pillows. <_<

Can't wait for a new CD. Been passing the time ordering old albums. Just ordered Living Field and Kool Spice.(Only because Kool Spice was cheap and Living Field is a great album.) I hope I did the right thing. I know it's stupid but I'm afraid sooner or later, probably sooner than later, these albums will no longer be available...to be lost in pillows history forever. So I'm trying to get to them asap. My next two purchases will be their first album, Moon Gold, and their second album, White Incarnation.

Well that's it for now. Updates'll be posted as they come. :)

Hey guys, I really like the pillows, and I was wondering, I've seen that the "The Pillows Since 1989" logo is on the stickers, but is there anyway to get it onto a T-shirt? Or, if they don't sell it like that, is there an image of it at a high enough resolution so that I could just make the T myself? If anyone knows of this or where to find it I would appreciate it. Thanks. :)

I assume you mean the logo with the three swords right?...

I actually haven't seen that shirt. :/
I'm sure if you search around, you can find a good enough picture of it, or even use the sticker.
It MIGHT be at their official shop, but it's a japanese only site that doesn't ship to the US...however, I've heard if you ask really nicely and pay through a international money order, it may work.

So not much new.
In case you missed the whle thread about it, tey will be touring with Mr.Children in a tour of Japan. That'll be starting 9/26.
Also, from what I could decipher on their official site(with my limited Japnese language knowledge), a show titled "DJ Bump Show" will feature Stereo Future and Sawao as the live acts, while the Noodles and Fragments will be DJing. 'D loce to see how that turns out. That show is on 9/22.
Both Japan only.

...quick question... did the Pillows (under the guise The Heroes, i presume), actually perform in the last episode of BECK? i recognized the song as The Last Dinosaur.

kenshinbebop

Yup. Both their songs Advice and Last Dinosaur were used in episode 26 of Beck. Sawao played one of the characters (voice wise) that were in the episode as well.

So, not much updates...

Hopefully they'll be coming out wit ha new CD soon. Maybe a PROPOSE single. The My Foot tour DVD should come out soon as well...maybe november or decemberish...

I just got Living Field(Out of stock before, couldn't get it with Kool Spice. :/) and Little Busters. What great albums. Little Busters has a great mix of slow and upbeat songs. And of course, ONE LIFE! That's gotta be my favorite song...
Living Field truly shows off their old-school style(though it wasn't old school back then, it was regular stuff). Angel Fish, Daydream Wonder, Climbing on the Roof. Great stuff.

Well, that's it. Yay...

Big updates:
3 out of the 7 or 8 shows are through with Mr. Children...check the thread for info...has setlist and such.

They played both new songs. Scarecrow sounds like a great song. As well as PROPOSE. The vid from the SF show sounds awesome...
Hopefully we'll be getting a new single ro cd soon.

Be sure to check the Hybrid Innocence thread for a setlist and a link to a blog of a person who attended the show.

Anyway, after this tour, they have a tour with Ellegarden. The last show is November first, so we should have updates when they're not so busy touring. :)

On a somewhat related note...somehow, miraculously, Manabe has managed to complete yet ANOTHER Nine Miles album. We shall be seeing that soon enough.

Well that's it for now.

:)

EDIT: Wow. Almost forgot! Great vids of Sawao on Hiro T's TV show in '99. Acoustic versions of: Bokura HAREI no Susei, Borderline Case, Nowhere, Bran-New Lovesong, and Patricia. Also, Sawao covers Simon and Garfunkle's Feelin Groovy.
Enjoy!

They have finished both their tours with Mr. Children and their tour with Ellegarden. They have but two shows left until their long awaited rest. They have a show tomorrow and November 1 and then they are finished until DEcember 8. December 8 marks their start of the "Lostman go to City" tour. Hopefully in the rest perios we'll get a single or something. Hopefully.

I've really gotten into their old stuff as of late. Kool Spice is a totally awesome album and with every song Manabe just surprises me more adn more. Crazy solos and intro's everywhere. They're tuff to learn. ;)

WOW. Long time, no speak...

Well the DVD was awesome, it had 3-5 tracks from the NYC show which I was at(I think I caught a glimps of my camera/arm in the DVD too!). It was great how they actually followed them from the plane and around the airport, around the cities they were in and the veues they played...it was really great.

The Scarecrow single was great too. It really comes together, the orchestration in the background nad everything really fills your head when your listening the high quality CD instead of the choppy youtube cut.

Their BSIDE Boys Be Locksmith was an acceptable track as well. Though not as great as the title track it was still pretty great.

Then comes their cover of Mr. Children's Tsuroygi(sp?). Having never heard the original version as played by Mr. Children, I was VERY pelased with the pillows cut of it and hope to hear the original soon. Sawaos voice is REALLY great in the chorus. As so in Scarecrow's chorus as well.

Just 3 days until Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up! comes out. I'm real excited...I can't wait to hear Propose. It was on the DVD from the LA show, but they cut the screen in half and used half of the screen and equal equalization of the audio to show pictures and vids of the venue and crowd. You couldn't really hear the song too well, but I guess that was the point. :/ The whole CD should be great though.

Well, that's about it...

Ooh. Nice. Yes thier cover does the song justice...it's differnet while still listenable.

The whole Synchronized Rockers CD is quite amazing. Going Underground does a cover of Little Busters I believe, and it's also quite great.

And of course, I forget who does it, but there is a Sad Sad Kiddie cover with female vocals and a piano, its gotta real jazz feel. It's most excellent.

But as I said, the whoel album is pretty great.

Yeah Last Dinosaur is a great track. One of those tracks that makes my neck hairs stand on end. Check out Sono Mirai wa Ima if you like LD, many people say they're similar, which I guess so, but they're different enough to merit a seperate listen.

Skeleton Liar has a great mix of soft tender vocals for the verse, and then balls out Sawao screamage we all love with a smooth distortion that's really great, not too bassy, but not too trebly.

She's Perfect is another great track, the instrumentation is cool, the solo fits very nicely, and the whole song's VERY good. The vocals are great, and the chorus is catchy. I really love the syncopation of the chorus. If I remember correctly it's got a great rhythm.

No new news thusfar, however they are releasing a single for the track Lady Birdgirl, I believe it's called, off the new album.
They're staying in JP with their tours as far as I know. :(

Too bad. I got to see them play last time I went out to California (the dates I was in happened to Coincide with the dates they were playing, so... I got tickets). I really want to see them play live; their rock is very unique for a country as homogenous as Japan.

The drums in Last Dinosaur are simply amazing, and the chords are by my favorite by far. This is simply an EPIC work. Just listening to it makes me so happy... it's not explainible. The Pillows are starting to become my favourite band of all time. The drums and the repeated melodic motif with the guitar... OMG... amazing.

100 out of 10, seriously, even Beethoven would be envious of these guys.

Yeah, LD is pretty epic. It's one of the few songs that could actually bring tears to my eyes...Last Dinosaur, One Life, and Blues Drive Monster are all that way. Something about them is just so excellent, so beautiful, it actually sends tingles down my spine, gives me that wierd stomach feeling, ya know?

OL and BDM have this sort of distant reverb added to the verses and/or choruses that really is amazing...I can't remember if Last Dinosaur has the same....

But yeah great song.

Indeed.

I think of the pillows as a 3 era band....the Walking on the Spiral DVD describes it as 4 movements I believe....

Their early years are phenominal. They are an up and coming group with a great sense of humor and their live shows are awesome. They expirement with numerous styles ranging from jazzy tunes to poppy tunes. Sawao's vocals are that of an aspiring vocalist, and their instrumentals are excellent.

From this era, purchase Living Field, Kool Spice, and if you can find it, their Special CD. There are a bunch of others I don't have, but only beacuse they are very hard to find outside of japanese auction sites and amazon japan, sometimes....

I'll describe the other era's later, when I return from a concert I'm heading to. :D

Instead of bore you with that whole speech that I love to give on the pillows eras( ), I'll jsut list some of my favorite albums and songs...

Please Mr. /Lostman is arguably their best album to date. It's got some of their best songs like Strange Chameleon(YOU'VE NOT LIVED TILL YOU'VE HEARD STRANGE CHAMEREON!!!! FREAKIN' ORGASMISC!), Swanky Street(ORGASMIC SOLO, WONDEROUS VOCALS), Kanojo wa Kyou (Freakin Amazing),...thinking about it, I'd have to list the entire track list. The whole album is amazing...

From the early years my favorite album is deffinately Living Field, the whole album is amazing, and if you know a lot of pillows already, you'll be amazed at the differences. Sawao's vocals are subtle and young, there is VERY little distortion/overdrive used at all, it's pretty much all clean jazzy and poppy tunes.

The mid-years are all great too...PML as I said is great all the way through...Little Busters, Runners High, Happy Bivouac, all great CD's...there Best of is a compilation of a bunch of tracks up to 2001...

Then comes another movement...Thank You, My Twilight, another AMAZING album, deffinately tied for first with PML. All the way through, it's an unstoppable album, Robotman, Shiroi Natsu, the title track, Come On Ghost...omg, the whoel CD is pure gold.

Penalty Life is domesticated, available at your local FYE or Best Buy I'm sure. I found mine at FYE...it's got a great assortmant of slow-fast tunes...

Turn Back, they're self-cover album is a mini album covering some of their own old stuff, but since it's a cover, it's a bit differnet from the original...

Synchronized Rockers, their tribut album, has some amazing covers by well known artists and unknown artists alike....Mr. Children does a great Strange Chameleon cover. They're all noteworthy though.

Good Dreams is....different...many poeple see it as they're weakest album and I'd have to agree, but unlike a lot of people, I don't find it horrible whatsoever...New Years Eve is a GREAT track. So is Orange Film Garden and a bunch of others.

Then My Foot, is domesticated as well, it's great. It really is, from beginning to end, it's new age pillows, but so excellent. The title track is great andall the solos are so good.

Then if you still can't get enough(I know I can't), they've all got solo projects that are superb.

Sawao plays guitar/vocals for the Predators, a colab band with Jiro from GLAY, and someone else...name escapes me now. :(

Manabe has a reggae solo project that's really interesting. Nine Miles is it's name and so far he's released two albums with a third soon to come I believe.

Sato drums for the band OP Kings or OP King. I've yet to hear them actually, but I've heard they're great.

And last but not least, Jun has a side project as well, Fragments I think it's called. Again, yet to hear him.

Woo, that was a lot, sorry for those tha tgotta read, but it was hella fun to type. ;)

Here's a recent interview I found with Sawao about the new album and what's to come...

http://www.jmusicamerica.com/us/article.php?id=2700

I have a lot of respect for this guy. From all the interviews I've read, and his view on life from the FLCL 2 booklet (Japan only?), he's really down to earth and really got a hold on things.

It seems they hope to get back here next year in the beginning, and some singles shall be coming soon.

On a related note, but not mentioned in the article:

THE BUMPS!!

Vo/G:yoko (noodles) / G:山中さわお (the pillows) / G:関谷謙太郎 (UNDER THE COUNTER) / Dr:中川飛出展 (monokuro)
Special copy band The Bumps debut live at Zher the ZOO YOYOGI DJ BUMP SHOW!! 2007.08.03

Yoko from the noodles, Sawao, the/a guitarist from Under The Counter, and the drummer from monokuro will be having a live show as the Bumps in august. No bassist... Interesting...

Yoko will be vocals (hmm, not the best choice IMO), her vocals tend to get limited and, dare I say, repetitive...Sawao would be good, but maybe even someone totally new. I've never heard of either of the other guys or bands, but idk...

Sounds interesting...I really liked the Predators, Sawao's other side project, so hopefully this'll turn out nicely.

That's about it for now. Keep rockin'. ;)

Well. I'm waiting for a chance to buy the Wake Up! (x3) album... but until then, how about some friendly conjecture?

What Pillows piece do you think is best composed? I'm not asking your favorite piece, but the one you think is put together the best (for me, there's a difference between my favorite piece and the one I 'admire' the most).

My favorite song by them is Last Dinosaur, and the second part of I Think I Can, but the one I feel is best composed is either Advice, Kim Deal, or Instant Music. Technically, the harmonies in those songs are awesome. ^_^

EDIT: Oh, kenshinbebop, that interview was AWESOME. Sawao really seems to be a cool guy.

Yeah, I've yet to order WAke Up either. :(

That happens to me a lot too. Songs I love becuase of their musical reasons aren't necessarily my favorite.

Hmm...some of my favorite ones are Tiny Boat, Terminal Heaven's Rock, Shinojo wa Shishta(She's my Little Sister), Walking on a Spiral, and wow...LET'S SEE IF THAT'S TRUE OR NOT!

They're all rich in melody and harmonies that just make the song. And background vocals like Oohs and Yeahs...the little nuances that really make the song, you know?

I completely forgot about Let's See if That's True or Not. Such an amazing song. It literally brings tears to my eyes, the ambience and the reverb used to make it sound so distant, is just, amazing.

There's are plenty more of course...

EDIT: As read in the article, they want to get back to America early next year. I've heard pretty much confirmed reports of a February visit. They'll probably stick with the Knitting Factory in NYC, but the venue might change...they might hit up Boston, and they'll probably make their usual run to Seatle, LA, and Chicago.

Don't hold me to it. I'll cite a source as I find it.

Wow... the Pillows are great...

I was just thinking of how distinct their style is, xD. If you know more than two songs by them, you should be able to identify just about anything they produce. It's a really consistent sound, IMO. Awesome. Other artists I can identify easily are FLOW and Hyde/L'arc.

EDIT: One Life rocks!

Not onyl are their production values great, and their distinct style...I'm always in awe of their tone. As a guitarist, one thing I strive for is a perfect yet unique tone, and I always pay attention to that when listening to a song. I mean practically every song has a perfect ratio of equalizations to make it sound amazing. I don't know how they do it, but they dial in some insanely awesome sounds. Everytime.

Yep. I was wondering about that too. Is it just experience they have? Or do they just take notes on different songs? Maybe it a combination of experience and intuition. Awesome though.

Actually, I think they have a harder time in the USA. Have you noticed in any of their US concerts how they're kinda' outta' synch with the music they're playing (like, sometimes Sawao sounds funny)? I think that is thanks them have basically random equipment... actually, I think Sawao commented on that in the interview you recently posted. Lemme' go drag it up.

Yeah it must be. I mean after 17 years I'm sure they know what sounds good and what doesn't, but they get an awesome tone everytime.

Yeah, in the Lostman goes To America DVD, there's a scene at the Knitting Factory of them getting used to their amps. (You can here Manabe in the background playing a riff from a then unreleased song!!) I realized that they can't lug their amps and stuff to America, so it must be different...but Sawao used his Twin Reverb (if I'm not mistaken) and Manabe used his Marshall, though it must've been the venue's...

I also know that they get some mundane reviews sometimes for their gigs because of Sawao's vocals or stuff, but I've come to realize that it's because they're so into their music, Sawao is jumping around and everything and they have such stage presence, that sometimes it does throw them off a bit. But it's more enjoyable, to me at least, to play an above average performance with tons of stage presence and coolness, than to have an excelent show musically, but to just stand there and play.

Manabe also has quite a pedalboard, so I imagine he get's a lot of his tone from that, not to mention his Orange and Marshall amps, very awesome amps. Sawao has the Twin, one of the most amazing amps ever, so it's no wonder how their tone is so amazing.

Here's my batch of videos.

I wasn't too worried about anything becasue I had the mindset that I'm doing em again anyway...

Tooo many things are wrong...my Twin Reverb has a blown tube currently, so I had to record these with the 15w that came with my squier a while back. Therefore in trying not to sound like COMPLETE and utter crap, I was limited to few of my arsonal of pedals. My tone suffered miserably as you would assume, well at least to my ears...going from a Twin to a 15w Squier really makes you appreciate tubes. But it's got sentimental value, my squier.

It was also hard to get the mellow crunch required of Funny Bunny with the amp at hand.

The lighting was also bad, it was night and my room light gives off just enough to see. I'll record round 2 during the day.

So anyway, here are the rough drafts:

xD, I basically taught my friend Ride on Shooting Star in LA about 2 weeks ago. We were standing outside, it was night time, and he had his guitar. So I was like "Wanna' learn this sweet song?" After that, I told him the first notes "D - A -F#" (in the correct pitches of course), and then I basic told him all the chords he had to play (in what rhythm as well). He was really freaking good, in 10 minutes he had the whole song down. I told him that the song was by a band called the pillows, but when I told him it was by a Japanese band, he basically dropped his guitar and walked off (though he did play it few more times during my stay). If I knew how to play besides the 4 chords I know (since last week...), I'd learn it myself, xD.

I dunno if I posted this yet, but in November, LOSTMAN GO TO YESTERDAY will be released...a 5 CD/ 1 DVD set of songs from their King Records career. Now that they moved to Avex, King is I guess trying to make their last hurrah...anyway, it looks awesomw but is about 90 bucks...I'll probably pick it up nonetheless. :D

Make sure you space out the time between listening. I don't want you dropping dead. :P

Seriously, give it an hour or two maybe.

So far the only songs I 've heard from the album are Scarecrow (because I got the Scarecrow single) and Lady Birdgirl (I watched the PV on Youtube. I also watched the Wake Up!x3 PV, muted it, so ave yet to hear the song.

It still holds exellence!!!

I envy you, I wouldn't be able to hold down that mute button, I'd have to click it, and listen to that godly sound.

Scarecrow rocks. It's my second favorite song, next to Last Dinosaur.
