Penalty Life is really good. Favorites of mine include "The Sun That Will Not Rise", "Moon Marguerite", "I Know You", "Moletown Prisoner", and "The Scar That Whispers 'No One is in Paradise'".

Also, Terminal Heaven's Rock, and Free-bee Honey...

Basically almost the entire album. It's really jamming.

I'd probably have to give it to Terminal Heaven's Rock, if only because it's ludicrously catchy and one of the first songs to get me away from being a "FLCL soundtrack fan" and into being a pillows fan. But yeah, a LOT of runner ups. Lonesome Diamond is probably THE runner up right now for me (kinda get a bit of a Monster CC vibe from the way Sawao plays out the lyrics, and I LOVE Monster CC). But then of course you have amazing songs like Freebee Honey and Phantom Pain (man is that chorus awesome), Moon Marguerite, and of course, I know you. Man, the whole thing is awesome.

No, we're out here. There are plenty of fans out there to share the love with!

And you should definately look into getting some non-FLCL music. You can really get into a lot of different styles with just this one band, xD.

I like the My Foot solo... and the solos on The Third Eye are ace as well.

But yeah, Non Fiction and Mighty Lovers have really cool solos. I like to look at Sayonara Universe as a whole work... But yeah, the solo adds a lot to the chorus.

My Foot? I can't help loving Third Eye and Nonfiction the most off that album, they're just such great songs.

Also, has Sawao EVER muttered more difficult to understand English than the "it's penalty life" in Mole Town Prisoner? I just can't hear it properly, no matter how hard I try, heh.

Thought i'd share an amusing little Pillows related story.

Today I went out to pick up new strings for two of my Guitars, and the local Music Shop was closed, so I ended up having to drive a bit farther to Sam Ash. While I was there they had this classic black Gibson SG for sale, so I grabbed it and sat down infront of one of the amps back in the used guitar section where theres always some stools and a big rack of BOSS effect pedals for people to sit and play. I tuned it up, played a couple of other songs, then hit the Blues Driver and started playing some Hybrid Rainbow. So after I started playing the rythm section, this guy comes up to me and says he reconized the song I was playing and wondered if I was a Pillows fan! So he picked up a guitar and we played a bunch of songs for a good 20 minutes, My Foot, Bran-new Lovesong, and One Life among other things. We got a few people who would walk by and stand and watch us, but I doubt anyone else knew the source material.

I have one other friend who I play with on a regular basis, and he was already into Jrock before I introduced him to The Pillows, and he immediatly wanted me to constantly go over and jam with him on every song he could get a Tab for  He also plays Bass guitar, so now we've got two lead guys (counting myself) and a bass player to really have some fun

Awesommee

I only have had one random encounter with a fan, a kid who was weraing a pillows shirt in town. Turns out he went to the concert at the Knitting Factory too. We talked for like 20 minutes about the pillows and the show. It was awesome.

I'm finally in a band and we're doing Runner's High and perhaps Advice. It should work out well, we have all the pieces finally. Every other jam I've been to I'm usually the only guitar.

I don't think anyone has 21 string songs :O It sounded good when it got here, with the origional strings. But I took those off and ordered new Ebony bridge pins as well, which I am not going to put on. Gonna leave the strings off untill I give it to him.

^Sawao Yamanaka has performed acoustic versions of a lot of their songs... as a matter of fact, here's an acoustic set list he did a couple of months ago while in Crystal Palace for the RSR Festival in Ezo:

Subhuman
Our love and peace
Texan Daily Life
New Year's Eve
Across the metropolis
パトリシア
白い夏と緑の自転車 赤い髪と白いギター
屋上にのぼって

I think the last song (in bold) is a new/unreleased song.

Well, he already has two 6-string acoustic guitars. You play a 12 string the same way you do a 6 string, except the sound is so much more rich and full. You can play pretty much any acoustic song on a 12 string.

Kool Spice was amazing! For whatever reason, Toy Doll was the song that really stuck out for me, even though I know the other tracks were probably "better", it just really hooked me.

So i've pretty much figured out that Acoustic cover of Hybrid Rainbow after watching it a bazillion times, the tuning is quite odd, i've never had to tune to an F# before and im not sure if its 100% or not. However when you capo that on the 5th fret and play from that point on it sounds identical. Only hard part was the strumming pattern but I figured it out. I think I will just leave the guitar tuned and capo'd like that for awhile.

I'm listening to the Living Field version of "Angel Fish".

It is a bit overproduced in my opinion, especially when you compare it to the subtle but powerful Special CD edition, but it has its own set of charms. Manabe's guitar speaks a bit more evocatively in this version, I believe. The extra instrumentation adds a bit more urgency. I like the original more, but this extraneous version is OK for a listen for contrast every once in a while, I think.

Yes, there are two versions of White Summer. On the B-side version, the introduction and outroduction are cut off.

In Angel Fish however, the entire song is different. They cut out the introduction that was originally there, and add a bunch of instruments for the Living Field version.

I was hoping the new single would come late January with the DVD releases, but it doesn't look like it. The closest month I can guess would be for February... But with their 20th anniversary being this year and all, I think it's safe to say we'll be seeing a lot of releases this year... similar to what happened on their 15th anniversary (90s My Life RETURNS, Good Dreams, Synchronized Rockers all int he same year).

And yes! I used to loathe the Good Dreams album but it really has become important to me. No weak tracks there, except maybe that funky "Bad Dreams" instrumental... which is pretty cool to me. My favorites off of Good Dreams includes "Sono Mirai wa Ima", "Walkin' on the Spiral", "Tenshi Mitai Ni", and last but not least "Good Dreams". "FRONTIERS" gets the gold for being the coolest song on the album. I like the tone of the guitars and Sawao voice, and how the drums keep it going at a calm, mature walking pace. No one ever agrees with me, but I think Good Dreams is one of the pillows' most mature albums... not as far as every track being "AWESOME!", but in the awesome, laid back feel of the album, despite its obvious energy.

I'm not familiar with the "references" you speak of in Monochrome lovers...

You know this is the largest thread devoted to a single band in the whole music section.

Most of it is composed of two-user conversation, but I guess it is pretty awesome. We get some greater traffic here every once in a while, but... well, you know who the hardcore fans are.

I just learned Something Like a Romance. The solo is insanely fun to play.

"Something Like a Romance" is one of the pillows best songs, I think the lyrics rival that of "Strange Chameleon". Did you read Marekenshin's translations at Pirouzu? Everything in that song is perfect... instrumentals, the solo, Sawao's voice... even the production is just right. Not overproduced like it could've been. The solo is very expansive, one of the pillows' longer ones; I especially love the last half of it... you know, where Manabe ascends? And the ending of the solo leads right back to Sawao perfectly...

... and his name... is MANK.

MANK. Yeah, it's an awesome name.

SOON I HOPE.

It's a new year...they usually hit the US in the spring. Last year was March. THe year before that was June. Let's hope they don't skip a year like they did in '07.

If they care about their fans here, they'll come back. It seems like they've been getting decent turn outs whenever they come to America, and they even went (are going?) to South Korea to play. Also, let's not forget the talk about them going to Europe "very soon". It seems only logical that they'd return this year... or at least the year after. Hopefully they'll expand their venues next time... the Southeast never gets any love.

I've beeen pondering a new guitar too, but I think I'm going to situate my pedalboard first. I'm seriously considering replacing my entire dirt section with a DM-4. There are more reasons than one, but Sawao uses it as his main source of dirt and I love all his tones.

I have played one of the 12 string models before and they sound great, but they're mostly for chord play, like rythm guitar. And yea it was a little more than I paid for my SG, but worthwhile.

So, have I stressed how brilliant of a lead guitarist I think Manabe is? He composes some of the most intricate lead guitar lines for a rock band I have ever heard. "My Foot" is just full of lovely embellishments, but his guitar has been adding panache to the pillows since the beginning. Especially after White Incarnation, when they started messing with jazz.

kenshinbebop
January 25th, 2009, 06:36 AM
Oh yeah man. Songs like I Think I Can and My Foot. His lines really add depth to the whole song.
Thinking about it, there aren't a ton of lead guitarists today who do what he does by like soloing over the verses and stuff. But it's not a solo, they're well thought out (I would think) and intricate lead lines.

You should watch 'How to master Hybrid Rainbow in a week' subbed on YouTube.(even though we all know how to play it) Sawao talks about how he invented fancy ways to play the chords on his rythm guitar section because when his friends ask him to play Hybrid Rainbow, and he starts playing the rythm section they say "no no, thats not impressive at all!"

kenshinbebop
January 25th, 2009, 10:46 AM
Yeah I've seen that. It's really interesting to check out settings (since I have a Twin Reverb too), and Manabe's pedal settings (which I have some of).

Gray
January 26th, 2009, 09:11 AM
Unfortunatly the one thing I would care about knowing the setting for, the Blues Driver, has tape on the knobs. However I was able to see Manabe's Big Muff settings.

btw I had a chance to play Bran-new Lovesong on a Spanish Acoustic that a friend has (nylon strings) and it sounded awesome. Love those guitars but dont play enough songs that use those type of strings to warrant spending money on a good one.

Along with a ton of anime and almost the entirety of the Cardcaptor Sakura manga (already had 1, got the rest of it), I just got Moon Gold and Runners High. Already listened to Runners High but as I had heard a good amount of it multiple times due to it being one of the "FLCL Albums", so I'm not really sure I can give a good opinion of it as an album yet, but it is a good listen. I only just started Moon Gold and I'm really, really liking it. Now I just need Happy Bivouac and Little Busters and I'll have a full set of albums :). Of course, I'll still need to track down Pantomime and 90s My Life Returns if I can, and maybe a few singles and whatnot...

Hey guys, any idea where would be a good place to find the Gazelle City and I Think I Can singles when I feel like actually going after them? Along with Ride on Shooting Star, they're the only ones that have "missing" tracks in Lostman Go To Yesterday (Well, Gazelle City's remixes aren't on there in general), and RoSS is fairly easy to find. Oh, and how worth owning are the remixes to Advice (the one I'm missing due to RoSS), the english "We have a theme song", and the Gazelle City/ Sayonara Universe remixes? I wouldn't be surprised if I do it eventually to shoot for a "complete" collection (of course, I still need Happy Bivouac, Little Busters, 90s My Life Returns, Pantomime, the singles AFTER Lostman, Kanojo wa Shisuta, and Electric Rays and whatever had 21 Fingers and No Substance...)...

His thinline tele? That's like my favorite guitar of his. I want one so bad.
He uses it a lot in the 90s, when they leave the jazz stage in their career. It's in the Rush, ROSS, I Think I Can, Hybrid Rainbow, and I think the Trip Dancer video too. The f-style sound hole makes it ever so sexy.

Judging by the dates of the songs, I'd say Tidus is right...Sawao probably obtained his Cyclone in 2000/2001, when TYMT came out, as proven by the White Summer PV.

It's clear that when he finds a guitar he likes, he sticks with it. 95-01 with the thinline, 01-08 with the cyclone...now he has that V, but he still uses the cyclone, just with a different paintjob.

Hey kenshin, in that book you have, does it have the tab/chords for Bran-new Lovesong? I have been playing it for ages but yesterday I had a friend tell me I was doing it wrong, so I wanted to know if you had the 'official' one thats in the chord book. (If its in there.)

EDIT: I wonder, is there any difference between the OST version and the album version that might account for two distinctly different ways to play it? From what i've heard its not just the chords that are different but the pacing is also changed. The way I play it has always been slow, after listening to the album version I have. But the other way i've heard it played is with a faster tempo, and I kinda like it. Its killing me because I MUST know the 'official' way its played

Yeah, they overlooked a lot of great songs for their best collection. I don't think they should have had the Third Eye and My Foot in there since the My Foot bandscore has both of them and came out soon thereafter.

They should have just did the whole FotP album for a best of since that is there best of too. Then there would have been some old songs on there, Midnight Down, and etc.

I think he's starting to loose some voice now... which is strange because Manabe and Jun sound good as ever.

Yeah, VLC is my favorite player.

Regarding your comments Tidus...

Eh I don't know...I mean, no doubt he was pretty off at parts, but I still like to pitch it up to his stage show. I mean, songs where he wasn't moving around as much, like Last Holiday and Across the Metropolis were a lot better.

I've come to love Manabe and Jun's back up vox...it's a new direction they're taking a lot lately and I'm a big fan.

Undoubtedly, 20 years of singing and screaming has taken a toll on Sawao's voice, but I still don't find it any major detraction.
Not to mention, there is deffinately studio work done on the CD cuts. His voice is doubled in nearly every song, a very popular technique.

Just hit Melody. Very nice, stronger than a LOT of the Pied Piper tracks, IMO. I like how it had "pied piper" in the lyrics, though, unless my ears were playing tricks on me. Very smooth, a nice balance to it and whatnot. I'm really looking forward to whatever we get next now.

Yeah, I heard "PIED PIPER" in their somewhere as well.

Also, to Kenshin, I like Sawao live too, but some of those performances weren't so good. I didn't like the Last Holiday live. I know Sawao's old and musty now, but it's cool... it was a great performance.

Also, I can't wait for the new stuff. Melody is definately a step up from most of the material we got with PIED PIPER, I think.

Come now, let's be honest. Sawao isn't what he used to be. And I only mean that in terms of vocal quality. Nothing more, nothing less. He was much better in 2007/2008 than he has been in late 2008/2009... a notable change. Just watch the Lost Man Go to Yesterday DVD and Wake UP Stand Up and Go (both of 2007) against the PIED PIPER Tour (2008-2009).

I can figure stuff out no problem if I can see someone playing it. But i'm not good enough yet to pick up on a song just from listening to it. My father has been playing for 3x as long as me so he's pretty good at it, but i'd need to see a video to figure it out.

I wish The Pillows did more features like the 'master hybrid rainbow in a week' thing. It dosent have to be a lesson, just a video of them sitting around in the studio playing. No doubt, I could figure a song out from that. But concert videos are usually really fast with alot of cut editing showing the different members, whide angle shots, etc. Nothing thats really any good to get a sense of what they're actaully playing. (Though I am glad they chose Hybrid Rainbow to do that little thing for, since its one of my all time fav songs and its great to know _exactly_ how manabe plays it.)

Yea, I added stickers to my Russian Big Muff to indicate what Manabe's settings are  I would love to know more info about his particular pedal since it looks like he's done some mods to it.

I have been on a Pillows kick lately. I've always listened to them, but I havent kept up with new stuff like you guys have. They're in my Playlist, but my Playlist is huge. Its kind of weird, I always love playing the songs I know but my list is really outdated. I just started listning to stuff like Thank You My Twilight, Go Go Jupiter!, Juliet, a whole slew of music. I think its time I added a Pillows-specific Playlist to my list. I need to go through and organise the albums I have and download the ones I dont.

He doesn't even use a Russian Muff anymore actually!
I was very saddened when I saw his latest rig...TONS of distortion pedals, but it looks like he switched his Russian Muff with a Metal Muff!

I used to have a pilllows specific playlist, but there was so much in it, it was just easier to go "Artists" and then "the pillows" and put it on shuffle.

YAY! My Band Score book arrived today, and considering I ordered it on Monday thats pretty fast shipping from Japan! (And it was only 10$ for shipping, I didn't pay extra for air mail or anything like that)

Knowing that these are the 'official' tabs is really cool, like I never played Little Busters with an F, but in the book the intro riff is C G F. The book also has a complete Discography of everything up untill the book was published, so thats also REALLY awesome. I am sure its online somewhere but its neat to have a list of all the albums in chronological order with pictures of the CD covers. The pictures are also really cool. Everything you could want in a bandscore book. Definatly worth buying. It even has a 'Basic Theory of Band Score' section in the back, and although I cant read alot of it the chord charts are really cool. I will have to get the others now just to have them all and stack them proudly together

I think the Music section is a grey area, because they put (Non-anime) in the title. Well its true The Pillows did the music for FLCL the anime, but thats hardly what we're talking about here.

But I hope this doesn't mean that the pillows are going to get lazy in terms of giving us newer music. Despite their recent success in terms of popularity, they need to keep focused on producing new and good music as well. A lot of this 20th Anniversary is rehash. I like it, but as my favorite band, I'm hoping they still have a few surprises left for me.

Most importantly, they need to come to America.

YAER!

Even more important, they need to come to the Southeast. We get NO love. :crybaby:

Mmm, kinda unrelated but I just picked up a DSi and plopped Walkin on the Spiral in to test out the little music player, and... that thing is AWESOME. Haha, dunno why they focus so much on the pitch/speed alteration when it has all the cool stuff like the various "instruments" you can play along with with L/R, the various filters (I REALLY like the "radio" one, but the instrumental didn't seem to work too well), and the interactive backgrounds like the Mario one... Needless to say, I'm impressed :) This thing is gonna see a lot of pillows love, even if I need to convert a ton to get it in there...

So I am thinking about setting up a website for a comprehensive list of Pillows Tabs. (Not just Guitar, but Bass and any other special instruments they use occasionaly.)

Pirouzu has a ton of support in the forums, but they are extremely lazy with thier 'Tabs' section, as they dont even update it when people post tabs on the forums.

That sounds great. I'll help in whatever way I can. I normally learn songs by ear, so I can tab out any that you need that you can't find on pirouzu.

Holy hell, that's... that's like FLCL era pillows. This is great! Officially hyped. For those who are illiterate to all Japanese characters but hiragana... is that a title or not?
Also, hehe, nobody has updated the wiki with Rock Stock and whatnot. I'd do it, but again, I'm not even sure on the whole track listing on those as I can only read hiragana...
