Without further ado, I present to you, the pillows NEW SINGLE PV:

NEW ANIMAL!!! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IEg4D9arUrE)

OMG... that was SO awesome! I can't believe it! Seriously, I TOTALLY LOVE NEW ANIMAL!!!

Back to loving the new single I see?

Yeah great vid. can't believe Sawao is actually rocking something other than the cyclone. It's been at least 5 years. More probably...

I realized today how amazing Runners High the album is and how close it is to being a TYMT masterpiece. Midnight Down, Juliet, Paper Triangle, Let's See...
Great stuff.

@ Donto: That's cool. It's really (the early years) a whole different world and it is understandable if you aren't a jazz or easy listening gay to not like it compared to the rocking stuff they do these days.

Yeah, RH is really good. HB is good too, but I really can't tell which is better, they're both on a similar level (though HB is a little more heavy). RH has some very dynamic songs on there. And yes, TYMT is on a whole other planet compared to the other albums. Perfect album.

Yeah, I agree. I really like the jazzy sound they had, and I like their indie sound as well (though I can never listen to Moon Gold in one sitting...). I like White Incarnation though, better than anything from before Living Field.

I actually don't think I've given WI a 100% fair listen. It was my last purchase of the old era and I kinda only listened once. Tonight, Our Haileys Comet, Kanojo wa Shishtua are the only ones I know well, and they're all good.

But still. Moon Gold alltheway.

BTW, in case you didn't read pirouzu...I went with TTMT for the theory project. I know you know your theory so if you wanna take the quiz, I'll post the questions tomorrow or Saturday.

You've only listened to it ONCE!? How dare you rate it if you don't even know the album!? That's horrible, kenshin! Once you get pass I Want to Be Salivan, you get to Hey, I Don't Care and then on to Dawn has Come and THEN Tonight, and THEN Our Halley's Comet, and THEN Good Night. All of those songs have perfect chorus's and Hey, I Don't Care is just AWESOME. You really do have to give them a thorough listen.

Edit: And yeah, I'll take your quiz, sounds fun.

TYMT is a VERY fun song to play. I just rocked out to it 3 or 4 times.

I love the electric sound in that piece. It's so cool because in opens and closes then song, and the pillows are just rocking out to it whenever it is heard.

kenshinbebop

One of my favorite parts is when the main progression modulates at the very end, but the electric riff stays the same.

Also, the solo is so heavily distorted, it's so cool he can basically hit any not and it'd sound cool. But it's very melodic and cool.

Yeah, it's a perfect song.

The ending modulation to E minor is indeed superb, and yes indeed, the solo is very beautiful.

It modulates to E minor?
I thought the progression just switched from I, III, IV, iv to VI, III, IV, iv....

Aw crap, no. When I covered it, I played in G Major instead of F Major, so it modulates to D minor in the original song. Yeah, VI in G Major is E minor, sorry about that.

I was wondering if I could get a good recommendation for which Pillows albums I should listen to ? I understand they're pretty popular, but I haven't really heard any of their stuff other than the material from FLCL.

First is first, what type of music are you into?

Would you like Jazz? Something similar to the FLCL music? Rock? Something with more of a "pop" taste?

There's really a lot of non-FLCL music to choose from.

kenshinbebop
May 7th, 2008, 12:11 PM
I'd say look for Fool on the Planet. It's their best of, and it has a pretty good variety.

If you want something real good, check out Thank You My Twilight.

There are some albums on the AN store, but if you don't want to deal with that, or import...your local Best Buy or FYE or something will have the FLCL OST's, Penalty Life, and My Foot. Those have all been domesticated.

No? I see no difference. It's all good music. Besides, most of Fool On the Planet IS music from FLCL.

Plus, that was kind of my point, if he gets PL and likes it, it's set that he'll be a full fledged fan, since that one is the one that most fans can't get by. Even though I've said all along it's fab. ;)

I don't think we should just throw him at PL though. If he doesn't like it, there's less of a chance of him getting into the pillows. I agree with FotP though.

Go to Fool on the Planet first. It has some songs that aren't on FLCL but are really great and popular by the pillows (2001 and earlier). Also, Thank You My Twilight is arguably their best album ever.

Well, you see, it's hard to say if Penalty Life is the album for you. A lot of people dislike it, but people like Kenshinbebop and myself think it's one of the pillows stronger albums...

Still, I recommend the album Thank You, My Twilight. It is my favorite pillows album, and it is also Kenshin's favorite. I think you'd enjoy it a lot. If you want to preview any tracks just ask and I'll send you a song or two.

I myself didn't really like Penalty life, but I do love that song "Terminal Heaven's Rock". If you really like the songs from FLCL then you'll like just about all of there songs. Maye some more than other's but everyone has their own musical tastes. I've never been one to like albums but rather individual tracks. Some songs I think you might like are:

NON FICTION
Beehive
Sono mirai wa ima
Trip Dancer
Beautiful picture
Skim Heaven
Wakare no uta

I could go on and on. For me, I just listened with an unbiased mind, even though I really loved the FLCL tracks. I found about 70+ songs I love. I'm a big fan now.

I just got a listen to some songs on the singles wake up!, wake up!, wake up!
lady bird girl, bscarecrow, new animal, tokyo bambi on their myspace (eww myspace) and I liked, very much.

Sounds good. What I did was work my way back from My Foot (2006) when I first got into them (last year). I think if you like the newer stuff, that you'll find it easier to get into the older stuff. It's good that you want to listen to it all.

I bought each of the FLCL OST's and then PL from my local store. Then I bought Runner's High off of AN. Then I began importing, the first album, IIRC, being TYMT, right before my 8th grade trip to Washington DC. It arrived the day before we left, I never opened it until on the bus and was blown away, listened to it the whole trip.

I've been listening to Moon Gold and White Incarnation and well... I think these two albums are REALLY good. I said I liked White Incarnation more than Moon Gold, and that still holds true, but I think Moon Gold is moving up. It is a very good album.

I Need Somebody... I just LOVE that song. The chorus is touching. I also like I Think it's Gonna' Rain and If You Sing in the Rain... very good songs. Hello Girl is another gem. It's a really strong album. Not as good as WI IMO, but very good.

EDIT: Hello Girl has an EXCELLENT solo. It's one of the pillows' best, if you ask me.

Seriously, have you listened to White Incarnation lately? Is it in you? Have you internalized it like Moon Gold? I've internalized MG AND WI, but I just can't say MG is superior to WI... it just seems like they put their heart and souls into WI, while MG just seems like it is composed of VERY GREAT songs. In the end, it's a matter of opinion... but White Incarnation is just a masterpiece. :P

That said, Moon Gold is moving up the rankings fast. My top ten is now as follows:

1)Thank You, My Twilight
2)Living Field
3)Please Mr. Lostman
4)White Incarnation
5)Little Busters
6)Runner's High
7)Moon Gold
8)Happy Bivouac
9)Kool Spice
10)Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!

^ I like the song "Little Busters" but I've never seen FLCL. Your cover on the piano of that song made me look it up. A+

Most indie stuff or anything in The Beatles direction doesn't really express how I feel most of the time. That's what I look for in music. Something matches exactly how I feel at that particular moment. It still gets my head bobbing and my foot tapping though. I'm listening to... Funny Bunny(?) right now.

Something matches exactly how I feel at that particular moment. It still gets my head bobbing and my foot tapping though. I'm listening to... Funny Bunny(?) right now.

I'm not sure if the pillows can connect with you... I think they have some influences from the Beatles. I'm not a BIG Beatles fan, but I find their music listen-able.

With the pillows, it's mostly about the music for me. The lyrics are a nice touch for a good amount of their songs, but I like the musical content more than anything.

Little Busters and Funny Bunny were both in FLCL.

Also, PIED PIPER is #5 on the oricon daily for albums. One up from Wake Up! x3's release, it was #4... but we shall see how PIED PIPER does overtime. I really hope it becomes their best selling album, since it's so damn good.

Across the Metropolis is a really good song, and it works well on the album... it's just that a lot of us DID get the TB single... I mean I've listened to it at least 30 times since it was released, and know it pretty well. I don't hate that it's on the album, I just wish there had been a different song on there... I mean, I was wanting lots of new material.

Yeah I understand. I've been meaning to pick up LBG, TB, and NA single for a while. I think I might neg. TB since it would only be for go go jupiter, and I've heard that on youtube. It's not really worth 10 whole bucks that can be spent elsewhere.

Kinda same with LBG. You've heard it. Is And Hello! worth buying the single alone? I really want NA for Finger Post Magic and the other...

I mean...when was AMAP released...2000 around? THere have been TONS of singles since then. When is another B-sides comp gonna come out!?

WUx3 is a VERY solid album. It doesn't stand out to us veteran fans, but for the casual listeners in Japan, I can see it coming across as a very great album. Every track had something to offer, from the fun of Youngster, to the pure WIN that is Century Creepers. The album also flowed pretty well.

PIED PIPER on the other hand... lives up to its name, in more ways than one. You kinda' don't know what you're going to get the first time around, and some of the songs just end... abruptly. POISON ROCK'N'ROLL is one of the most surprising final tracks from an album I've ever seen from the pillows... it seems like it's going to be a bland, boring song at first, but then the bridge/pre-chorus swoops you up, and the chorus is just Sawao telling you "THIS IS PIED PIPER *****, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, GTFO!", accompanied by Manabe making sweet noise in the back ground.

Please do. It really adds to the album as a whole, seriously. I think that it puts the whole thing into perspective. I know it sounds ridiculous that a single track could have such an effect on an entire album, but I think PR'N'R really moves PIED PIPER up on the rankings for pillows albums.

Oh, hey! Welcome to our little hang out thread! It's mostly Kenshin and I here.

I with I hadn't listened to the singles as much because I think that they'd make the album much better if I weren't used to them. You know, like Little Busters or Please Mr. Lostman... they have lot's of singles on them, but we don't care because we weren't even aware of the pillows that long ago.

But now it seems like I follow the pillows a bit too closely... I'm thinking about giving the next set of singles they release only one listen when I get them (or maybe two), so that if it ends up on the album, I can enjoy them album more.

Anyways, getting back on topic, PIED PIPER is delicious. Everyone seems to hate Wake Up! x3, but I think it's a really good album. I'd say PIED PIPER is just a bit better, if not for its off-beat style (short album, bad*** but short songs), just for a slightly more awesome track-list.

That might be why I liked PP so much, I didn't get ANY of the singles. I'm getting some now for the B-sides. I tink that's a better way to go IMO.

A lot of people didn't care for WU!x3. Same with like Penalty Life. I dunno if that's only at pirouzu or not. I myself can't say I've disliked any album, and can listen to every song on both the aforementioned albums.

I'm liking the album still, having listened to it... about, 10 times, I guess...
Let's see, Pied Piper itself, the song, I can't quite peg how I feel about it yet, but it's certainly an interesting song, although I'd call it one of the "slightly less awesome" songs for me, although that could be do to the PV for it that came out early...
New Animal, always nice, and it gives the CD another one of those very nice more upbeat songs.
No Surrender, I'm in love with, probably my favorite new song from the album (Still need a little more time to decide how I feel about it up against the singles songs, though)
Last Holiday is very nice as well, and almost gives me something of a Scarecrow feel. Nice slow song, and I'd say one of the highlights of the album.
Tokyo Zombie impresses me because I like it despite it being the shortest song on the album AND an instrumental, I suppose mainly because of that awesome transition that comes after the "lyrics" part.
Across the Metropolis fits nicely into it's place in the album, giving a little something mellow and nice right there in the middle.
Purple Apple is REALLY quirky, almost to the point that I was thrown off when I first heard it, but it REALLY picks up when it hits that little piece where the final chunk of lyrics starts (Well, the book lyrics. There's a little looping to it, of course)
Tokyo Bambi is really starting to grow on me, and is probably my favorite of the singles songs right now, which is funny because I was actually a little disappointed by it when I first heard it, but it's a really interesting song.
Ladybird Girl is good as it was when I first heard it, but my opinions a little dulled by the number of times I listened to it before the album, but it's still plenty strong of a song.
That's a Wonderful World... very nice, although nothing particular to say here, but far from a bad song, for sure...
Poison Rock'n'roll, nice song, really picks up, and ends the album nicely. And it ends the album with Sawao saying "yeah" which is of course always a plus, too bad there isn't an "oh" in front of it.

Anyway, great album, although I'm a little disappointed by only Tokyo Bambi breaking the 4 minute mark, not that it really hurts the songs for being a little shorter, and just the large influx of singles before release dulling the "new" factor... Overall, though, very enjoyable album.

^Hm... an appropriate response. I am currently listening to Angel Fish, from the Special CD released in 1993.

PIED PIPER is a good album, but it's nothing too extraordinary. If you ask me, the pillows have had a very great musical career. Their first 13 years are simply perfection, and I simply love everything they put out in that time frame. After the release of Penalty Life, however, it marked a time period when the pillows' musicality would be tested by the force of age. They've been through Rock, Pop, Jazz, Grunge, Rock again, and now they return to a power pop-rock like sound. As fans who've listened to most, if not all of the pillows released discography, we are especially susceptible to this intense, yet mundane interest in listening and rating the pillows' music.

PIED PIPER is definately up there with other albums this band has released, but it is nowhere near the caliber needed to call it a masterpiece (like Runner's High, for example). Here's my review:

PIED PIPER is an interesting album name. I researched the tale that the album's name is based off of, and I must say, I was very interested to see what Sawao was leading me into when I first got my hands on the CD. I went through the CD in my room, lights off, and with the AC turned up. The music came out. PIED PIPER, the title track, was old news. Frankly, I had watched the PV multiple times, and I knew the song as well as I know Swanky Street, or Little Busters. However, upon first listening to it, and knowing I had a whole album to follow me up on, I felt it. The magic. Sawao's magical voice accompanied by his guitar chordage and charm had swept me up, and I didn't know or care where he was taking me next.

Sawao decided to take me to New Animal. The album seemed to have a strange feel already... The singles released up until now had been rather different. Ladybird Girl - Tokyo Bambi - New Animal... they were all different, specially placed in the order that they were released in. Still, New Animal his first, and I loved it. I sang along with the volume turned up high, and was in a good mood when I got to the final line "Kudakete boku wa kaze ni narudake!"

From their the album was new. No Surrender! Kicked me out of New Animal like no one's business, and I felt good hearing Sawao's voice. It seemed more raw in No Surrender. The guitar worked I noticed, was based more on chords. the pillows' music is especially special to me because they are good at putting every guitar to a specific and useful use. Manabe has some of the best lead guitar lines I've ever heard. In No Surrender, however, the chordage is full, in both guitars. Same with Last Holiday, though there are definately embedded lines within. This is not new for the pillows, but I notice that their is definately less shredding by Manabe these days...

Tokyo Zombie and Last Holiday are highlights, not only for being the "new" material for me, but also because of their coolness. Last Holiday is very chill, and it gives me the first idea that this album is gonna' be varied and rocking. It has many elements of past ballades by the pillows, but yet, it remains shorter than them all, and it has a great ending. I think Last Holiday is one of the most interesting tracks on the album. Tokyo Zombie is one of my favorite instrumentals, and it's really short and sweet. The Knock came at the late of night.

The album suffered from a few things, however. The single tracks were included. This is not a bad thing. Even a b-side was included, but this is also not bad. This album suffered for me because not one track truly delivered anything for me. I said that Last Holiday was a highlight, and probably my favorite... thing is, I don't think that Last Holiday is really that AWESOME OF A SONG. It's really good, and I can listen to it over and over and feel good listening to it... but let's face it. We've also got Purple Apple, That's a Wonderful World, and POISON ROCK'N'ROLL there. These tracks are all acceptable. They're all pretty good. But none DELIVER. I think every pillows album I have listened to had at least one track that was just BRILLIANT, but I think PIED PIPER fails in this respect. Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up! Had Century Creepers. MY FOOT had the title track, MY FOOT, among others. Good Dreams had GOOD DREAMS among a few others... (going further back you start getting albums with multiple masterpieces... so yeah), but PIED PIPER? I don't think it has a hit on there.

It's a short album, and it has a few loose ends... but it is to the point, and I like that. A little over 40 minutes, and you get some cool songs to listen to. Also, it lives up to it's name... PIED PIPER. There's something about this album that makes it special, compared to everything I've heard since... well, Thank you, My Twilight, actually. It has the pillows' flare, and yet it is different than what we've been hearing from the pillows recently. In PIED PIPER, Sawao says firmly, with the closing of Poison Rock'n'roll, "We are the pillows, if you don't like us, GTFO please." Don't worry, I like you guys, Sawao. ^_^

That was well put. Specifically, the last two paragraphs. I can't say I agree, and I can't say I don't.

While your deffinately right in saying it's still not on par with their best albums, I'm not sure I'd say it doesn't deliver. There are a lot of great tracks on there. Last Holiday and the song for Hermit both satisfied me on the level of some of their great stuff. The melodies were great, the instrumentation was there, and each member did their part, just wht was needed, nothing less, nothing more.

Naturally, the pillows sound has changed over the years. I'm not sure how much of it is THEM that has changed or they just chagned with the times.

...Hermit both satisfied me on the level of some of their great stuff...

Hermit was a good song. It really reminded me of some of the songs off of Moon Gold, in terms of musical structure. Sawao playing those chords of two and four, and Manabe playing over him, with the fun, moving bass line... for a moment, I thought I was listening to 90s My Life or something.

It was a good song, but it didn't deliver. I guess as far as "delivering" goes, it's just a matter of opinion. I always appreciate a song more after seeing it live however, so it's a good thing I get to see the pillows live in a few days!

Well, the one of the children of my host family (he's 15, btw), has a friend who's been into the pillows since the late 80s apparently. A couple of months ago, when it was confirmed I'd be staying with these peeps, I asked about the Special CD, well, my friend told me the guy had the Special CD for sale! Since I was an American, I got a discount, on the charge of "spreading the love of the pillows across the world". I acquired it in late February... I mentioned on Pirouzu... Still, it costed me about 100 bucks. :crybaby:

Ha, yeah. Great album. The title track is great, but tracks like Monster CC, Kono yo no Hate Made, etc. really make the album shine. The title track is crazy, it goes from soft to hard.

It was one of the first pillows songs I learned.

My favorite track off of Smile is probably Good Morning, Good News.

It has a lot of good songs on there though... It's a really good album.

Holy cow, this album has some crazy songs. I think Calvero just nearly gave me a heart-attack with that transition at the start. And I think I agree to Good Morning Good News, but I need a few more listens to say for sure. Really liking Calvero, to, though...

The Rush cover is pretty rad to me. That girl looks like she has a rush inside of her.

Yeah, I figure it has some meaning as well...

I haven't really looked into the symbolic implications yet, so I'm just being shallow at the moment. I should look into it, it's really an interesting choice to make the cover so... well... One Life.

Favorite covers?

My favorite is probably... Living Field... or maybe Good Dreams. GIANT FLOATING FORK FTW!!!

Kashima Tatsuya was such a good bassist... it's too bad he left. :crybaby:

I love how he would improvise bass lines in the live performances. I remember in Another Morning he went crazes with his bass line. It was insane... Figures though, seems like he lost interest when the pillows dropped the jazz sound. At least, it seems like he left because he didn't like the grunge sound the pillows were making towards 2000.

The dude was excellent, though.

Yeah, so I'm totally back from the void of computer-less-ness. Too bad I don't have much significant to say...

The new DVD isn't coming out until January!?

Let's hope I'm still alive when it comes out! Think of all the lives we could potentially see with this one!

It will be amazing.

I'm convinced that Shiroi Natsu is the pillows greatest song to date.

Hm... that's a hard one, man. I've been listening and I just don't think it's possible to pin down a best song... seriously... it just doesn't seem possible. Let's See if That's True or not.. Shiroi Natsu... Damn, too much ****! Still, I'm waiting for this DVD, xD.

Mmmm, Let's See is another amazing one. But I don't know. When Sawao screams that last Shiroi verse, it really hits me.

Yes... that's true. I get the same feeling in Thank You, My Twilight.

Oh yeah, I Want to Live Like That? That whole song is beautiful, especially the guitar solo. I think that guitar solo is THE model example of perfection in simplicity. Just add a little wah peddle, and everything is good.

EDIT: And yeah, LOL at the Instant Music avatar.

Ha, yeah. It loses its win with it's small size. I have another screen shot from it on another forum that allows bigger avatars and it's great.

Last night I went through my whole pillows and AKFG collection and made a playlist of like 50 songs to play/learn. It was a great experiance just listening though the whole collection.

Also, the TYMT solo is pure win. You can tell it is a very emotional solo.

Indeed

Very nice. Baby doko made demo is an amazingly sung line.

The vocal melodies of Sawao are always brilliant. Like honestly, I don't know how he does it.

Yeah, he is one of the best vocal composers I've ever come across. He really knows how to crank out those melodies.

His voice is really suited for screaming too. It sounds just great.
