Make sure you do. It's continuing down the same path as TB and the Wake Up x3 album... pretty lighthearted.

I want more deep things... like THAT HOUSE, and Beautiful Picture. I must admit though, Tokyo Bambi has been growing on me. I love that song now.

Have you heard the Across the Metropolis demo? I really can't wait for the single to come out. The demo sounds great... and I think it's based off of a Beatles's song called Across the Universe, based off the title. Awesome.

No I haven't heard it :(

The clip on the official site doesn't work for me, and the DL at Moletown isn't working cause I'm not a member yet...the admin still hasn't processed my aplication from days ago. :(

That's too bad. :(

I used Media Player Classic to play it. MPC plays some odd formats out there, so I'm guessing the clip on the official site is in some weird format.

New Fave from 90s My Life:

NEVER FIND.

I LOVE this song. Was this influenced by Bob Marley?

It's SO awesome.

Dunno. Manabe is a big Marley fan, but they've done a lot of reggae stuff over the years. There was almost one on very album for a while.

Have you heard Manabe's side project, Nine Miles?? He is coming out with a new CD soon. There is a thing going on, if you buy the new DVD, Tokyo Bambi single, and Nine Miles CD, you'll get something for free. What you get is on the tip of my tounge, but I forget....

Anyway, they did something similar with Lostmas Goes to America, Wake Up!x3, Scarecrow. I think Avex has been a good change for them.

OK. SO if I purchase DVD, the TB single, and Nine Miles I get something for free. Do I have to make this purchase from the official website?

kenshinbebop
January 5th, 2008, 10:00 AM
No, I don't think they sell things on their site. And their official store only ships to the US with a money order and very polite persuasion.

I don't know how it works for Americans honestly. I'd imagine, unless they're geniouses and do it a different way (probably because they're Japanese :)), that you get the Proofs of Purchase and send them in. But like I ssaid, I don't know if they'd do that for Americans...who knows thuogh, I'll look into it...

Also, have you heard any Nine Miles?

Tidusauron12
January 6th, 2008, 08:31 AM
^ No. To tell the truth, I wasn't too interested in Nine Miles until just a few months ago. Especially after Never Find, I was looking for some more Reggae type stuff. Raggae+J-Rock=AWESOME.

Awesome stuff. I only have his second album, the first is always out of stock at the place I normally go to. I hope to get the third too. the pillows actually covered Heart is There on the Third Eye single. I lol'd.

My favorites of Nine Miles are My Amazing Grace and Heart is There.

I think I found a place to buy the album from. $18.98 is the price. I'm gonna' check and see if they're legit first... I'll post a link later.

Kool Spice is indeed cool. Twilight Park Waltz ftw!

I'm really loving the feel of this album. I wish I had been around when it was first released in Japan. the pillows were pretty much still underground when this came out, right? There are some awesome tracks here... and this is basically a full out Jazz album.

Yeah. You should, if you haven't already, see Walkin' On The Spiral. I'll find some clips if I can. Great stuff though, can't understand a word of it, but over at pirouzu there was a collective effort to get a translated manuscript going of it. Great vids from their wacky old underground days.

Yeah, it wasn't anything great, but it's al lthey had, and it showed the vintage footage that I was referencing. There are of course better clips. Some highlights from the actual DVD include their great outfits and Manabe's varioius hairstyles, Shin puts on a big nose and proclaims he is Ringo Starr (LOL), and also, the extras are AMAZING.

But of course. Besides almost every CD (every one if you count DLs sent from a friend), I have 3 or 4 singles and 4 DVDs. Walkin on the Spiral, 916, Busters on the Planet, and Lostman Goes to America. I have an Asan Kung-Fu Generation DVD too.

I'd rip it for you if I had the formidable program...

OMG... THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!

[/FANBOY MOMENT]

Holy CRAP... I'm happy. I just hope they come to the Southeast this year... they never came to the SE before... I had to go to California to see them... T_T. As for iTunes, WOOT! Even though I already got the album.

I'm deffinately getting autographs this time, and talking to them. Pics perhaps? Me and my pillows T shirt and the actual pillows, it'd be a night to remember.

I seriously hope they come to the Southeast this year. They didn't come before... that makes me sad. We were TOTALLY left out. You guys in New York are lucky. :crybaby:

If they don't come to the SE this year, I probably won't be able to go see them. :(

Aw that'd suck. I don't know if it's schedualing in JP that's the issue or whatever, but it pisses me off that a lot of lesser known bands can do close to 20 and 30 stop USA tours and the pillows never make it past 10 stops...

I've been learning some more of their songs lately...The Third Eye, Nonfiction, My Girl, and Gazelle City off of My Foot. Already have My Foot, Rock n Roll Sinners, Sayonara Universe, and Mighty Lovers down pat. Then I have most of the Best Collection bandscore down too...Need to get my Wake Up!x3 bandscore...

Yeah. I know. :(

Any ideas??

Tidusauron12
January 10th, 2008, 07:37 PM
Not really... I wish I had some, but I don't. If you uploaded some videos of you playing some covers (without the original music along with it), I could download the video, and rip the audio from it. Then I could put your playing on CD, find a good distance from my Camcorder/Recorder and make a video with both you with your guitar playing, and me with my piano.

That make sense?

kenshinbebop
January 10th, 2008, 07:55 PM
That would work...

I'll test drive it this weekend? What song do you want me to do?

kenshinbebop

Alright, It'll kind of be hard without the drums and bass to keep my time, especially since that basically is the intro is the drums and bass...

but I'll see what I can do. ;)

Tidusauron12
January 10th, 2008, 08:08 PM
Sorry about that... as long as the tempos are consistent enough (even if they change a little bit during different parts, say like the solo), I'll be able to stay with ya'. Try hard!

kenshinbebop
January 10th, 2008, 08:23 PM
Heh, yeahno worries, I can keep time well enough.

Just gotta play through to see how long I wait and stuff,

Tidusauron12
January 10th, 2008, 08:37 PM
Yeah. Seems like once you get pass the introduction, you shouldn't have much trouble... at least, to me anyways. Or you could play with headphones on, you know, with the song on your iPod. Then you wouldn't have that problem.

Anyways, you're Kenshin, so either way I know I don't have to worry. :naughty:

kenshinbebop
January 11th, 2008, 12:09 PM

Yeah I shouldn't have much trouble after the guitar comes in...I'll try out different ways though.

You put some of the Beatles on there too. Fun.

kenshinbebop
January 12th, 2008, 09:36 AM
Yeah

Wait-wait! Kenshinbebops ideas are flowing!

If this whole compilation thing works out, we can do some Beatles, the piano ones like Let It Be, Lady Madonna, or anyone else you want to make into a piano one.

This could only happen of course if you were to like the Beatles...

Tidusauron12
January 12th, 2008, 09:44 AM
Sure. I can do The Beatles. Easy. Unfortunately I don't have any songs by them handy. I might need to buy a score >_< or listen to a few songs by them. I know some of them, but I'm not to fresh on the piano parts.

Yeah, if we can do the pillows, we can do the Beatles. More fun for me. ;)

kenshinbebop
January 12th, 2008, 10:01 AM
Let it Be would be an awesome song. I can play it on piano, so I'm sure you can play it amazingly....It's just 2 different progressions containing C, F, G, and Am. ;)

C, F, G, Am
C, G, F, E note, D note, C chord

Then the chorus is Am, G, F, C

Listen for rhythm. ;)

Plus it has a killer guitar solo which I've already put up on youtube so you can hear it. Check the profile in the above link and it's ike the first video I did.

Tidusauron12
January 12th, 2008, 10:06 AM
"I feel fine."

Is that the song you're talking about?

kenshinbebop
January 12th, 2008, 10:16 AM
No:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4oZYqAeIdYk&feature=related
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MQN5xliBAFQ

There are two versions of the solo, the one I covered, and one that was less aggressive. This was ata time when they were breaking up, and Paul told George to play the solo sweetly, and so he played it aggressivly and he was actually crying on the DVD. But the one they went with everywhere besides the actual Let It Be album is the sweet one.

Tidusauron12
January 12th, 2008, 05:01 PM

Haha, that wouldn't be too bad an idea actually. Seems we're the only people who like discussing how awesome the pillows are these days. Everyone else got bored with em', I guess.

Anyways, I had a question. In the song Little Busters, in the line: "Just waiting for the little busters..."

Yeah... what exactly those that line mean? I mean, overall, I get what the some is about, youth and all that good stuff... but I can't get an accurate sense of the definition of the words. I looked at the sentence before: "With the Kids sing out the future... Maybe kids don't need the masters!" Then comes: "Just waiting for the little busters..."

Haha... I know, I know... but comon... I'm serious here.

Haha, they got the solo right until the end, haha... I'll admit, that's gotta' be hard to nail. If you noticed, Sawao and Manabe keep their eyes watching each other during the solo, ever so intricately.

Still, AWESOME performance. They're good. I watched their Third Eye. ^_^

I can't get a good enough view of the lead guitarists pedalboard. I wanted to see what he was using, besides the Fender and the Marshall Half Stack.

Tidusauron12
January 23rd, 2008, 09:50 AM
Yeah, who ever was filming their performance... wasn't doing to well. It seems like they were in a small room or something... but some of the shots weren't good... plus it took me a while to figure out who was who because of the set up, I had to find the bass, then the rest fell into place.

Anyways, I would be interested in learning what pedals do... since I have no bloody idea. :P

kenshinbebop

Ha.

I never understood how Manabe sang backup while playing his lead lines. I can't. :(

Yeah, I was thinking it was horribly hard to do. Even on piano, it's hard to play lead material and sing at the same time. Manabe is awesome... maybe the SB's lead just needs practice.

kenshinbebop
January 23rd, 2008, 06:25 PM

Last week I picked up a Loop Station pedal from Guitar Center and it is so amazing. What it basically is is a recorder where I play something into it and it repeats it either looping forever or I cna set it so it just loops once....

I love to play Sawaos part into it and then play Manabes part over it. It sounds awesome. I've yet to do it with the My Foot solo, but I did it with the Third Eye where I looped the main rif and played the harmonized solo. So cool.

Just so happens, I made a similar CD for my dad after the concert. Here's what I gave him:

Black Sheep
Bye Bye Sweet Pain
Carnival
Come On, Ghost
Daydream Wonder
My Girl(Document Version)
No Self Control
Nowhere
Patricia
Please Mr. Lostman
Robotman
Subhuman
Sunday
Swanky Street
Thank You, My Twilight
Trip Dancer
Sayonara Universe
Strange Chameleon
Tiny Boat
Hello Girl
Bokura no Harei Suisei
Konojo wa Kyou
Ame ni Utaeba

I didn't really base it on terms of time, but more on terms of style. I was sure to include some of their acoustic stuff, they're old jazzy stuff, they're rock and roll stuff, and they're current poppy rock stuff.

That was just in my case. Keep in mind your target audience, give her things that she'd like. Maybe Sleepy Head, Nightmare, heavier stuff since she likes VK. Also, what kind of American music doesshe like?

Tidusauron12
January 30th, 2008, 12:42 PM
I'm not so sure about the American music she likes... I talked to her for the first time in like half a year yesterday... We talking about about how mainstream music in the US was outstandingly horrible (usually), then we got started talking about Japanese music. She told me she was into Visual Kei, specifically An-Cafe. I used to be in to them, so we hit it off there.

Anyways, I told her about the pillows and she seems mildly interested *maybe*. I asked if she'd be interested in a mixed CD, and she agreed. She told me she didn't have an e-mail address (haha, which I still think is a lie).

Anyways, I'm just trying to make a good CD. Based off of the fact that she likes An Cafe, and the fact that she was into that type of style clothing last year... I think I can make a good estimate of what songs I should choose for her from the pillows' long library. :)

I betcha can tell the difference between multiple pianos though!? Unlike I...:\

Meh, yeah... but with pianos, it doesn't matter much. That piano is black... that one is brown... yay! You know... that kinda' stuff. I'll admit though, the construction of a piano is important for its sound... and you have to know your stuff to judge if a piano is really actually a good or not.

Still, I love rock music now a days, and guitar as you know, is the instrument of choice. I wish I had your knowledge of guitar.

Well my music theory teacher at school is areal stickler with pianos. He's got perfect pitch and all, and he goes crazy when things are out of tune. And we were like, whats the difference between this paino(small portable piano in the band room) and that(concert grand worth multiple thousands of dollers in the auditorium). And he goes into a half hour lecture on the tonality and construction of said pianos. It's incredible.

I assume you can tell the difference between a Steinway and a Yamaha. :naughty:

BTW, do you have perfect pitch?

Tidusauron12
January 30th, 2008, 07:28 PM
Actually... I don't know if I have perfect pitch. I really don't think so though. When people sing and ask me what note they are singing, I usually can't tell them... but I find that WHENEVER I'm listening to a song, I know the key it is in, instantly. It's this strange type of perfect pitch, I guess. It's not a fully developed one, but really, what else could it be? The only song by the pillows that I didn't know the key instantly was Moon Marguerite. That strange 'voice' like sound (was that guitar?) through me off.

I don't know... heck... maybe... it's just relative pitch? I can't tell. Do you?

kenshinbebop
January 30th, 2008, 07:43 PM
Nah, I wish...I've only about half a year of music theory exp though. One day!!

Kenshin, I really think you should check out the Mr. Bubbletown's Happy Zoo DVD. Sawao's singing is almost album-equivalent on their, as a matter to fact, I thought the Like a Love Song performance was better than the studio recording. The atmosphere they set up with their outfits and the light show in the background was perfect to.

You can find a few performances on Youtube if you check... I'll post a link:

To get pillows music I think there's a website called Gendou. I loved the FLCL albums :D My faves were "Ride on Shooting Star", "Carnival" and "Brand new love song"

Tidusauron12
February 7th, 2008, 05:22 AM
Yeah, I started at Gendou's. My first two songs were Ride on Shooting Star and Hybrid rainbow. Now, however... well, let's just say I have almost 150 songs by them.

But I'm nothing compared to Kenshin... I think he has, what... maybe over 300 songs? The band is 19 years old.

Anyways, make sure you check out the non-FLCL music if you get a chance. Before 1997, the pillows were a really diverse band. There's plenty out there, before FLCL (Kool Spice, Please Mr. Lostman) and after (Smile, My Foot). You've got over a dozen albums to choose from. If you need any recommendations, don't mind asking me or Kenshin for some. ^_^

Yeah I gots to get some more DVD's....Bubbletown, and Asian Kung-Fu Generation has a new one out...

Great version. I've seen that on youtube before. Similarly, if you haven't already, take a look at 916, Busters on the Planet, and Walkin' on the Spiral. Walkin on the Spiral is really a documentary, but the clips are fab.

Here's some 916 clips, click the guys username for more. Paris Girl Marie is AWESOME.

Also, I dunno, assuming you know the original Black Sheep (hence your avatar :D), here is an awesome rendition of it done just lately, and the solo is AMAZING.

@Jia-Ren: Is the Brand New Lovesong the lyrical one, or the instrumental from FLCL? Both are cool, but I wasn't aware there was a lyrical version of half the songs from FLCL until I became the big fan you see today. ;)

the pillows are officially slated for a spot at SXSW in Austin, TX in March. This means a US tour will most likely ensue. A reliable source has stated, after a discussion with The Stereo Future, a band who plays with the pillows all the time when they come to Washington, has said that there is probably going to be a show with the pillows, noodles, and Stereo Future in Seattle on March 28th.

Yeah, well, most of their REALLY good old stuff is only available through import (that means you have to buy the CD from Japan through the internet), but that usually costs extra money.

Also, their oldest albums are out of print completely, so you will more than likely have to go to downloads if you want their oldest albums, like Pantomime, Moon Gold, and 90s My Life.

I recommend the album Kool Spice. It is my FAVORITE album by the pillows right now. 1994 is the year, and it's a full blown Jazz album. I think you'd enjoy it... I mean the instrumentals are just perfect, and coming from FLCL, you'll be SURPRISED at how the pillows used to sound, compared to now.

Kool Spice is still available from various retailers. The only reason 90's My Life and Pantomime, Pantomime especially, isn't available for sale new is because they weren't really full blown CDs.
When they were still on Captain Records, they were still really underground. Their transfer to the Pony Canyon label was a great move, and they started making real CDs...after all, Pantomime and 90's My Life have what, 5 songs each??

And really??? Kool Spice over Living Field!? Or Even Moon Gold!

EDIT: Seeing your sig reminded me to ask you, did you ever notice the word play in Sawaos lyrics?? He' really into conundrums and words that have the smae meaning kanji wise.
Want to Sleep For is really 1, 2, 3, 4. and THen he says Fib Sex Heaven Aid Night for 5,6,7,8,9.

I really love that and look for it in their lyrics.

Haha, I know. Most people are surprised, but I really like Kool Spice a lot. All of the tracks are just great, I can hardly find anything wrong with the album... other than the fact that it is only 7 tracks long.

And thanks for that, I'll look into it! I didn't notice that!

Was there confirmation that the Pillows were coming to CA?

I wanted to kick myself for not catching them in either SF or LA for the My Foot USA tour, but I'm glad to hear they're coming back to the US. My friend and I are huge Pillows fans, and we're not going to let this happen again.

I fell in love all over again last night. I got caught up watching PVs on youtube and I heard Swanky Street and Daydream Wonder and got that tingly feeling in my tummy. I thought 'these guys didn't know what they were getting thereselves into'!

Yeah, every once in a while that happens to me too. I have the Swanky Street and Daydream Wonder PVs on my iTunes. I love them so much. One day I hope I can see the Monochrome Lovers PV. Also, I look forward to the pillows next album.

Right now I'm caught up on This is My Fashion. I love the riffs Manabe has after the guitar solo.

New single in May, new album in June if I'm not mistaken. Album in June i know, I dunno when the new single is out...they've been playing a new English song at their shows lately. Hopefully they do like last time and sneak peak at one of the shows...hopefully the NY show this time. Also, I want to catch a pick. Also, what should I get signed???

Monochrome Lovers PV is on Walkin' on The Spiral. It's pretty cool. It used to be on Youtube, is it not there anymore??

Tidusauron12
February 18th, 2008, 01:01 PM
^Yeah, the PV is gone.

Also, I think you should get a guitar signed! Or have you already? It'd be awesome to have a guitar signed by one of the pillows. If not a guitar, some merchandise that you have, or something. Can you take pictures with them?

Yeah, I deffinately want a pic with them. I know a lot of people who have in the past...

I was thinking a guitar pickguard. I proably wouldn't bring a whole guitar in case I didn't get to get an autograph....
If not a pickguard, then deffinately a CD or something...

I made a poster with all the pics from online and the pics I took...

I'm debating whether to give it to them...

Well... I just came across an extremely active torrent that contained the complete discography of the pillows on the internets... this is a grave day indeed for CD sales.

kenshinbebop
February 22nd, 2008, 06:11 PM
Ha. That's not cool. :(

Tell those hooligans to get Pantomime-90's My Life and the Special CD and import the rest! ;)

I'm waiting anxiously for my tickets. I dunno where they are, but I selected teh no charge shipping option wihch said it's garunteed at least 2 days before the show. I guess they take their time with them then...

Lately I've beeen on the quest, as you may have seen on IM, to find out when Manabe uses his wah, and through the many songs I've looked at, it sure brought back crazy love. The whole TYMT album is ace. And I'm currently in love with Another Morning, Another Pillows. The B-sides are wonderful...Yellow Beans, Lesser Hamster in Blue, Our Love and Peave, Subhuman, omg, all amazing.

And lastly, I'm about to make my first import in a while. The WU!x3 bandscore is a must, and so is the latest Asian Kung-Fu Generation DVD. I'm probably going to end up with the new pillows DVD, Ladybird Girl, and Tokyo Bambi as well. Unless I go with Ajikan's Feedback File.

Decisions, decisions...

You're a busy pillows fan!

Since I probably won't ever get to see the pillows until I go to Japan (sadly, that's how long I'll have to wait... and I'm probably going to China this summer since I'm studying Chinese... so I can't go to Japan for two years), I'm just going to chill and listen to my mp3s. I haven't listen to the FLCL-era stuff in a while, and I should give Smile and TYMT a listen as well. I've been listening to Stuff pre-Living Field as of late.

I don't think so. I mean... that's pretty far. Plus y'know... I can't afford plane tickets. I don't have a car of my own to drive... and I'm like the ONLY person in my city who listens to the pillows, so car pool is out of the option. Also, my parents wouldn't want me so far from home, just to see the pillows (no matter how much I express my love, they simply don't understand). :crybaby:

Just make sure you share your vids and pics. ^_^

Well, after Please Mr. Lostman, there's music that was used for FLCL, that is, the albums Little Busters, Runner's High, and Happy Bivouac. All of these are great albums, but if you're satified with what you've heard on FLCL, I recommend the 2006 album, My Foot. One of my favorite albums by the pillows.

In the order I think you should go:

1)Living Field
2)Please Mr. Lostman
3)My Foot (which will be cheap because it was actually released in the USA).
4)Little Busters (album)
5)Happy Bivouac
6)Runner's High

If you're interested in the SUPER early CDs (from before Kool Spice), just say the word, and I'll hook you up. ^_^

My Foot shouldn't be included since it is domestically available and will be cheap.
Get Penalty Life as well, available domestically.

Anyways, I can tell you about Noodles. Noodles is an all girl rock band, who are under Sawao Yamanaka's (lead singer of the pillows) record label, Delicious Label. They're pretty good, and they've been around for quite sometime.

Here's a good song by Noodles. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LlQJnNlEVc)

My mistake it is only them too. It is a one hour drive for me and having to deal with traffic to LA is a pain. Hopefully they still have tickets, so i can buy some this Thursday but i don't know what to wear. lol
