Yeah, Scarecrow is pretty great...the solo is awesome as well.

Yep. That's my favorite part of the song. It's excellent. It's my second favorite guitar solo out of any I've heard in my life. Mostly because of the chords they hit towards the end of the solo, but the beginning is really cool, an as always, they introduce the guitar solo perfectly. That surge was so cool, like he was turning super saiyan right before he busted into his solo, almost like he was charging up just to go at it. That gets me everytime I watch the PV.

YES!!! I love how Manabe does that. A lot of the time, he bends a note or two to lead up to the solo. It's so thrilling, it gets you pumped.

Yeah, REALLY pumped. If I watched Scarecrow five times through, I'd still get chills through my bones. It's wonderful!

In a recent show, it is reported, Sawao was feeling under the weather. He made it through most of the show, but abouth 3/4 of the way through, during Midnight Down, he was no longer able to sing. However, instead of canceling the show early, they all played, and he let the crowd sing.

How awesome is that?

I'm going to make a purchase soon. Either WU!x3 and bandscore or an Ellegarden bandscore, or White Incarnation. Some comob of the 4....
Most importantly White Incarnation. I'd have every available album once I obtain this, and it has a few songs I've never heard. Most importantly, Konojo wa Shista, She's my Sister. I had an excerpt from this song on the Walking on a Spiral DVD, and fell in love. I've finally found a place with WI in stock, so I need to grab it as time dictates.

Whatever I don't get I'll get soon thereafter.

xD, if only I owned a guitar that was worthy of Manabe's signature (or any of the pillows for that matter).

A hand shake is good enough for me, and just telling them how much they rock.

Konojo wa Shistua is She is my Sister in Japanese...the name of the song is She is my Sister, but the line in the song is sung She's my Little Sister.

Well, my package got into Alaska on Saturday and into NY yesterday...it says it's out for delivery today, which means I should be getting it within the hour...

I'll write a review once I give it a lengthy listen...

No new news as of now...

kenshinbebop
September 24th, 2007, 05:26 PM
Well!

I waited eagerly as the FedEx man pulled into my driveway. He gave me my package and I greeted him and said thanks.

I immediately uploaded it to iTunes and onto my iPod and went for a run. Something I recently got into, and what's a better way to run then listening to a brand new pillows CD??

So anyway:

It's hard for me to really dislike anything, plainly put, by the pillows. It's just hard. I've such a strong admiration for these guys that I'm incredibaly biased.

However, as a musician, I have other feelings which balance out with my fanship, so it allows me to actually be pretty ok with my judging. So here goes:

The album started out with Colorful Pumpkin Fields, a song that had heavy bass with Kenji Ueda, and heavy use (surprisingly) of some kind of flanger or phaser guitar effect that sounded awesome.

Instead of going into every song, I'll bring up the high points:
Great harmonies/background vocals
GREAT GUITARAGE
Same old pillows
Like other older albums, heavy jazz influence, poppy, jazzy, catchy...

To find some negatives, it's really hard...honestly. It's scraping the bottom of the barrel to find ANYTHING wrong with it...some long songs, audible studio mistakes (not even mistakes, just the sound of all their stuff from this time...not advanced equipment maybe...or the fact they all recorded in one room...idk, it just sounds distant and muffled). This is especially audible to me with Bokura no HAREI Suisei, because it was remastered and covered on their Turn Back album, so I've had the pleasure of hearing the remastered awesome version, so to hear the scrappy original was interesting. By no means bad however, just different.

Same with pretty much every song on Turn Back that I've heard the originals of, Want to Sleep For..., Tiny Boat...

Anyway, I can't really pick and choose a favorite of their old albums, but Living Field is deffinately number 1....then Kool Spice, Moon Gold, and White Incarnation are all tied for 2nd. Really they are.

Man, I have to admit, If I had to go gay for any group of men, it'd be the pillows, they kick ***. I seriously have not liked any form of modern music as much as the music those guys produce.

The only music that I like on an equal level is classic music (my first love). Damn, the pillows REALLY rock. I gotta' see em' in Japan one day.

That's what I was saying, they were really retro in their early days. Kenji was still in the band, and after he left, they dropped the retro act...I wonder if he was the driving force behind that...

Anyway, that song was Ame ni Utaeba, off of Moon Gold, their 2nd (?) album. Great song, great album.

I'd hate to sound egotistical or something, but I've been told I'm really good for a self taught player of 1 year and a half. ^_^

We should deffinately plan something. I dunno how...

First we decide on a song. Then you can record your part, send it to me, and I'll lay guitar over it? Or something to the extent. You seem to know your way around recording, hopefully you have an idea on how to do something like this. :D

 Not really. I just used a Microphone and then converted the file to mp3. Do you have a microphone? If you do, you could record something and send it to me. Then I would play it on my computer, and while it was playing, record over it with my microphone, and then it'd be us both in one track. Yeah, that's low-grade, but hey, whatever works, right? We can do it vice versa too, which would be better because you'd have bass and all that.

Anyways, the songs I've done on piano are Little Busters, Carnival, One Life, and Last Dinosaur. I could probably pull off a few others too.

Nice. That'd deffinately work. You send me your playing and I'll add in guitar, and bass?

Little Busters I can do, One Life I can do, Carnival I can do, Hybrid Rainbow I can do, and a number of others. I've yet to learn Last Dinosaur. It's such an awesome song, but I've not gotte naround to it for some reason...anyway, we could do that if you wanted...I've been playing a buncha My Foot songs lately, Sayonara Universe and My Foot, Rock n Roll Sinners...

But I really don't care, they're all great, you choose. :D

Forgot Hyrbid Rainbow! That's the first I did! I can also do Ride on Shooting Star really well, but that wouldn't be too impressive. I want to do My Foot or Fool on the Planet, but it's just weird right now, plus, I don't really have the time anymore, lot's of Classical music to attend to. Hm... How about we do more than one?

Oh yeah, I meant it'd be good if I record first because I can take care of the bass, and you'd have a sense of tempo when you listened to the recordings. Don't worry, about that. What parts do you want to take? There are certain parts the piano can't play well, I think you should take those.

Gotcha, yeah, awesome.

More than one works great for me. :D

I'll play the solos of course, and lay a chord progression in the background, or play whatever you say the piano deosn't cope well with.

What song do you want to do, I've got a three day weekend thanks to colombus day! :D

EDIT: Even better, you play chords, like I heard in One Life. Manabe is always doing lead work and Sawao's doing the chords, so basically, your Sawao and I'm Manabe. :D You got the vocal part and the chords, and I'll do the lead work and solo. Unless it's like One Life where they both do chords.

How about we do... One Life first! I just finished that (more or less), so it'd be the easiest for me to do on short notice. I'll just send you the recording I already did, or you can download it from the link that I posted above. Actually, no. I'll make a new recording, one that matches the song more accurately. I changed it a little bit on my old recording.

For the solo part, just keep with Sawaos part. He does chords through it I believe.

OK. Like I said, I changed it a bit, so I need to figure out some of the chords... is it OK with you if it takes a while...? Like, an hour or so? I wanna' make sure the chords I hit during the solo aren't dissonant. That would suck.

I think I'll send it via e-mail...

OK, I'm doing the the Chord Progressions, mostly... so you can do fills. You get the solo, and I'll take over everything else while you play that sweet, sweet piece of music  I'm doing the melody of course. So you can just worry about fill and the solo. If you want you can do Manabe or Sawao's parts, or a mix, if you prefer... and if it becomes too much, then you can just come up with your own harmonies based on the two guitar parts (I'm sure you've already worked out how to do fill). OK! I'm about to record as soon as I get everything set up, I'll post to tell you I'm done recording, and then I'll send you the file through email. It'll be in mp3 format, OK?

This one?

Yup. :D

I recently acquired their performances at Live Beat '97 and '99, including a cover of the Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star!!

And Sawao's side project with Mr. Childrens bassist and drummer, and a guitarist from a band I don't know.

In awesome news, I recently got a new phone which has an awesome recorder and can set recordings to ringtone, so I now have 90's My Life as my ringtone!!

Aw...is there anything I can do to make it work out?

The ONLY place I've seen it is Japanese auction sites which involve a third party to place your bids. There are such companies like Rinkya who you pay to make you bid and they're like the middle man.

I've never tried it. I myself resorted to soulseek in desperation because I had to hear it, and boy was I glad I did.

I could send them to you if you'd like. Via IM or Email...

I'm not sure what you could do to help my recording attempts... seeing that I live in 'teh south' and you live in 'teh north' xD. Unfortunately, my piano is TOO far away from my computer (out of recording range). I don't think I'll be able to do it in the near term... unfortunately. T_T

#1 Ano hi to onaji rora no shitaete

Yeah, it was cool. All of these songs were cool. I need to listen to these songs more, but shitaete rocked, I must admit. Still, all in all, it came out number three. I'm not sure what it was, but the vocals rocked.

#2 Angel Fish

By far my favorite. I loved the vocals and the instrumental parts of this song. It rocked SO hard. All of these songs have very mellow feels, especially the next one...

#3 Kimi to Futari

OMG... I thought this was WEIRD when I first heard it. Of course, that feeling subsided as I listened, and it actually seemed a little more unique than the first two tracks. I think the first two tracks were a little similar in mood and in just plain theme in general. Futari had a strange, jazzy feel, and I was tempted to type in Jazz for its classifaction on iTunes (left it as pop, meh...). Anyways, it gets a number two on my list. This could change if it grows on me.

Man, the pillows ROCK. I can't believe that they've gone form what they were in the early 90s to what they are now. AMAZING.

kenshinbebop
October 8th, 2007, 04:32 PM
Heh. Yeah...

I don't know what it is about Futari, but it's my fave. Maybe it's the fact that Angel Fish and Ano were both on CD's, Futari was the one I hadn't heard before. But it's so mellow and relaxed, it's awesome. Angel Fish is pretty great too.

Yeah. I've not heard a transformation as unique as theirs since the Beatles' moved from their early brit-pop stuff into...well...not their brit-pop stuff. They were so many genres...but then again, so are the pillows. In a way...

Living Field review? Or Bye Bye Sweet Pain? Bye Bye Sweet Pain is AWESOME. It is pure win, and for a long time, I had to battle it out which was my favorite, Sunday or Bye Bye. I thought some of those lyrics from the song sounded kinda' familiar... like I'd heard them in another song... but that was only one or maybe two lines.

I just played through, it sounds cool.

I know of two places that have fills. Before the pre chorus and before the chorus...

Some Q's:
1. Do I play the intro riff?
2. Do I play chords the whole way through?
3. Or just the chorus?

Or I think of that episode of Drake and Josh that I happened to watch the other day where the guy breaks the guitarists hand and he has top fill in for him. That'd suck because I broke Manabe's hand, but it's be awesome to paly with them.

If you broke Manabe's hand, that might actually happen, since they'd be here in America, and finding a replacement wouldn't exactly be... easy. FYI, I saw that episode.

It's really easy. Just download Free Youtube to mp3 Converter (google it). Not only does it do youtube videos, but it can extract music from most videos, no matter if they are from youtube, or on your computer's HD. Remember, it can only do internet videos from Youtube, but if you have videos that you already have on your HD, you can just extract it from the video file.

Well, I just made my mom listen to a few songs by the pillows. Two were PVs ripped from Youtube... You know, that extremely old one from Youtube, and the She's My Little Sister PV. I told her those were early 90s. Then I let her check out the Carnival PV. Next I showed her their live performances in Mexico (IMO the best live show the pillows ever did), and then I let her see a live performance (2007) of Strange Chameleon in Tokyo. Next, I forced her to listen to Little Busters and My Foot. Unfortunately, I didn't have anything else on my PS3 HD, so that's all she saw. It's hard to tell if she liked them or not, but I saw her banging her head a little bit to the guitar solo of Carnival and the Guitar Solo of Strange Chameleon. Also, she banged her head to the guitar solo of Sono... something Mirai... xD. She seemed to like them... but I'm not sure how much. In the future, I'll try to get her more interested in the pillows... if possible. ^_^

No. In the PV, Sawao had on a gray or green suit and red pants... and it was a Reggae-ish song. That's the old one I'm talking about... remember? I told you about the Youtube to Mp3 Converter so you could get it onto your iTunes.

And actually, let me correct myself. I don't think that the live performance in Mexico was the best... but I thought that the performance of Sono wa... something Mirai was one of their best lives in a while. I totally agree... the pillows have pulled off much better live performances. ^_^

Oh, Henri Verdoux. Yeah I remember. Sweet song.

Sono wa Ima no Mirai was really great at Busters, or 916. Haven't seen either in a while, but one of them had it awesomely.

I wish. :(

I have the DVD. I have Busters on the Planet, 916, Walking on the Spiral, and Lostman Go To America. I've only been to the NYC show of their My Foot tour...which is Lostman Goes To America. I see my camera in the DVD.

Buster's is one of my favorite performances of theirs. Every song is just flawless, the crowd is so into it, and everyone is having a great time.

Well, the most awesome version I've heard of Sono wa Ima no Mirai live was in Mexico... I don't think I've seen it performed live on Busters or the 916 shows. Also... they were playing in Mexico (a Japanese band... in Mexico City = WIN). Something about that makes it more awesome.

I Hear Jingle Bells is the best track on 90s My Life, IMO. It sounds like they put a lot of work into it, and you have to love "Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle Jingle JINGLE BELLS...!" And the chorus at the end "Merry Christmas...". Excellence!

As much as I love it, I love others more. Especially 90's My Life and Paris Girl Marie.

Such amazing works, it pains me to think that it could ever stop.

Synchronized Rockers has a great cover of Paris Josei Marie.

Why have I never head Paris Girl Marie or Synchronized Rockers?

Oh well... I like 90s My Life as well, the beginning almost made me cry one time (you know... the harmonica and the piano). It just sounds so relaxed and peaceful, what with the people chatting and laughing in the background, and the simple waltz with the piano and the harmonica. Then the band comes in... AMAZING.

Blasphemy!!! Paris Gilr Marie is amazing. The guitar intro breaks in and you feel the amazingness, then Sawao comes in and it's like "Wow!". Then the chorus comes and your likie *orgasm*. Well, something like that. ;)

Synchornized Rockers is pretty awesome if you like exotic things. It's deffinately a must for pillows fans. THere is a piano and female jazzy version Sad Sad Kiddie, Ellegarden covering Funny Bunny, and a great band I've never heard and never thought to look into covering PGM. Great covers. There is also an acoustic cover of Hybrid Rainbow by someone, and Mr. Children's now famous Strange Chameleon, plus many more

Yeah it truly is an amazing tune.

You know... I find something about Sawao's singing voice amazing. I don't know what it is... since he obviously isn't the best singer out there... but his lives can be really awesome.

One thing I love about it is his shakiness. I don't even know if it'ss intentional, but damn, it's awesome.

I also don't know if it's intentional... but I get some clues.

Sometimes in his performances, you may notice that he'll pull out some really in tune, nice vocal lines (I noticed in a Strange Chameleon live ) and in a That House live I saw on Veoh once. However, whenever he sings a part when there's alot of energy in the song, he'll put less focus into his vocals and WAY more into his movements, and guitar playing. A good example of this is the first Shibuya AX live for support of The Third Eye. Sawao and Manabe pulled some awesome moves out there, and the stability of his voice wasn't there too often. Heck, even Manabe was shaky in that performance.

Anyways, the best examples are songs like Little Busters, and Crazy Sunshine. There's some much energy there, the vocals never seem to be stable. All the same, I love it. :D

Anyways, I can't wait for the new single coming next month, Tokyo Bambi. I want to see what style the tracks incorporate.

:( I want that belt so bad! ^

That's something I don't mind though. Everyone takes it as a bad thing that some of their performances are shaky, but it's deffinately stoppable if they wanted. It's just that they move around so much and ar so energetic. It's like, I'd rather them be a bit shaky with an energetic stage show, then sit there like robots, but play perfect.

Also, yeah TB should be quite cool. I think I'm looking more forward to Wake Up! Stand Up! and Go! DVD. I still need WU!x3 and the bandscore though. And LBG. :( I was going to get it for christmas, but I decided to get a lot of guitar stuff instead...so probably my birthday, December 28th, I'll get some pillows and Ajikan. Mostly pillows though. ;)

I bring tidings of great joy! A great new PV, their best in a while! And Jun is in it!!! And it's a fab song. I'll pm you the mp3 when you watch the vid. I love this song. Reminiscent of both Liberty and My Girl, with a mix of video game-esque-ness. Ha. Awesome. Can't wait to hear the B-sides on the single.

Merry christmas to all, and to all, a good night.

Wow... that made my day. My mom came over while I watching it,

I can't say what I think of it since I only listened once, and with low audio (it's morning time). I'll give it better listen later, and oh yeah... they brought back the BRASS.

Ok not Pillows related at all, but Kenshin has a bazillion tabs and I want to know if you have one for Hash Hash. I can do most of it by ear but since it's heavily distorted it's throwing me off.

Never actually even saw more than a few episodes of Trigun. O.O

I'll look into it though.

Question:

What is your favorite pillow work that focuses on twin guitar?

My answer is going to have to be The Third Eye, with My Foot coming in at a close 2nd (that solo rocked TOO much). March of the God was pretty good, and the My Foot album itself had plenty of twin guitar tracks.

Deffinately third eye. They didn't really do twin solos until My Foot iirc. But on My Foot, OH! Gazzele City was schweet too.

Gazelle City was SO awesome for the first few months of listening, but Mighty Lovers rocks hard, IMO. :)

Third Eye is just epic, when I saw the live, I couldn't help but smile when Sawao and Manabe pulled out those harmonics.

Strange PV, but from what I heard, it doesn't seem too special a track. It kinda' reminds me of That Wake up! Dodo! PV, and the song itself does too. The guitar solo was pretty OK, and it was solid enough.

Still, I'm hoping Over the Metropolis beats both TB and GGJ. I'm just hoping.
