I just watched Last Exile, and I'm wanting to buy it. But I'm really wondering which version I should get. There's the complete collection box set that has the art box and all seven volumes, but there's also the relatively new Range Murata version that is in a thin-packed box set. I know the Range Murata one is a little less expensive, but what do you guys think? Which is the better one to buy? I'd really like to hear from someone who already has it if at all possible.

The content difference between thinpacks and full box sets usually consists of a bunch of extras. If you really go for extras, then content-wise the full box set might float your boat. If you're like me and don't care about extras, packaging or all that marketing crap, then all you'll need is the series itself, which the thinpack provides.
As far as the content of the series goes, if they're produced and released by the same company, I should imagine the series content would be the same, unless one's marked "Director's Cut" or something. If so, then you should be able to find out hom many deleted scenes are included in the special edition and decide whether you think seeing those is worth the price difference.
If it was me (which it's not) and I wanted to buy Last Exile (which I don't), I'd go for the thinpacks. The packaging and extras on any special edition would not be worth one extra dollar to me. I'd rather put that one dollar toward a different series. You'll have to decide whether they're worth the extra dollar (or more) to you.

I just bought the thinpack, it's on it's way. But from what I'ver heard and seen, the thinpack packaging actually looks pretty good. And it's not from ADV so I don't think they took any extras out either. Don't know for sure though.
Thinpack all the way.

The newest one, I think that was the Range Murata thinpack release. I heard it having reverse R2 covers if you want that and plus it's cheaper. Geneon will not be releasing complete sets w/o extras, there will be extras in everyone untill Geneon announces that it won't like ADV did.

ADV is discontinuing extras for its thinpacks? just clarifying since there are some series that I really did like what was bundled with the series

I got the thin pack, it's great. Really well done. I don't know much about the other set but the thin pack isn't lacking in quality by any means.

Same discs. Less price. Less space. Better covers. Sometimes you have to think when choosing, but this one is a no-brainer. Thinpak.
Just got the thinpak myself. Still own vol. 1 plus box and figure (that was it though). The thinpak on the whole is significantly nicer. And to my knowledge, noone other than ADV strips the extras when thinpaking. This is Geneon. Same discs.

Go with thinpacks. I bought thinpacks three weeks ago; it was very cheap. Same discs, have all of extras. This, my friend, is Geneon. I know that ADV strips all the extra on all of thinpacks and I don't like ADV a bit.

No need for Geneon to cut any extras since a lot of times they don't really include any besides the basic creditless OP/ED & maybe a few original commercials.

That is indeed true. It does often seem like Geneon's regular releases are the equivalent of stripped discs. Not to mention their higher wholesale pricing means you usually pay more for Geneon discs with equivalent MSRPs (assuming of course that you're buying at a place that doesn't just charge MSRP on everything). But when it comes to packaging, presentation, and disc authoring, Geneon usually hits the mark closest to the R2. Some of their dubs ain't half bad either.
The Last Exile thinpak is one of the nicest R1 releases out there. Good show, great presentation, decent price. Everyone should own this set.

Yeah Geneon is A+ in packaging & most of the time they have the best dubs made because they hire Bang Zoom! & Animaze(both companies use the same VA's). Only thing that sucks is a lot of times even though I consider those dub companies the best they don't use 5.1 most of the time, mostly just for movies & in rare cases an OVA & TV series. Its nice we are getting X TV in 5.1, thats one of my top favorite dubs, can't wait to hear it in 5.1

Sorry to bump an old thread, but i figure it'd be better than starting a new one.
I bought a Last Exile Boxset @ Suncoast and theres something strange about it. Its only Volumes 1-6, but it comes with the box, Alvie Figure & Mousepad. I tried searching on ebay, yahoo, and msn (by barcode, name, etc) and i cant find a thing. The Insert on the bottom of the box says "Volumes 1-6, Episodes 1-23 of 26".
Was this boxset a Suncoast exclusive or something? It seems kinda wierd that thered be a boxset with only 6/7 of the volumes.

I'm not sure ,but I'm headed to the Mall a little later and I believe they have one of the sets at my Suncoast still.
I'll take a look at it and let you know.
This is what I thought should be included with the set though.

I had the same problem with my boxset, and yes, I do find it weird. Luckily I was able to find the 7th volume at Best Buy, but that was years ago. Nevertheless, I'm sure the 7th volume is sold separately at Suncoast, if you're willing to pay full price.

I checked the one they had in my Suncoast its the same deal volumes 1-6 in the original art box with figure and mouse pad.
I think I remember Geneon (Pioneer at the time) doing something else like that with another series.

I find it really wierd that they'd bother doing that. Even moreso that the upc doesnt show anything online. But i guess for $22.50 I cant complain, im just gonna ebay it off anyways. They also had the thinpak for $22.50, unfortunately it was already gone by the time i went back yesterday.
