is there any Death Note thread here? for those Death Note lovers...
And now there is!
This thread is dedicated to the wondeful world of Death Note. It's basically like any other specific show/manga thread where as you can post your questions, comments, reviews, criticizm, anything that is relevant to Death Note.(And abiding by forum rules of course.)
P.S....don't forget to use spoiler tags as those woh havent read anything more than the US release (import Death Note or scanlations), they are(including myself) only up to volume 2.
Enjoy!

Okay. Is it just me, or does the series REALLY start to suck after L dies ?

I'm currently reading the U.S. version, but I'm tempted to read the scanlations...:P (I loved volume 2 just as much as the first volume, but I'm disliking Light more by the minute...<_<)
Even though Light's intentions were good (a little twisted, though...) at the start, this "goal" of his is involving more and more innocent people...and he's become more twisted by the second. It's really sad, though, since you wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at him that he killed so many people with the Death Note.
It's a great story, though, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it unfolds. (I like how unpredictable the story is...:D)

Light, to me, is one of the only anime/manga characters that personifies my inner demons. I'd be doing the exact same things with the Death Note...a lot more senseless killings..

I know that a lot of people who have read Death Note have said that the series goes downhill after a certain part... I've only read volumes one and two, and I don't see how the series could possably go wrong. It seems so great. Does it really get that bad?

These are spoilers, so...you may not want to read it, but...L dies, and I've heard the series takes a downhill turn after that. After all, L was the only real adversary to Light's cause... :(

No, in my opinion, of course, it never gets "that bad" (or bad at all for that matter). While I agree that it's not as good as it started after L dies, it's still excellent. At the very least, the introduction of Mello and Near really help keep the story moving and the resulting Arcs have been much more interesting than the Yotsuba one was. I really like both Near and Mello, and this new Mikami guy seems to be absolutely awesome. Now that someone has lived to conclude that Light is definately Kira, I imagine the story can only become more interesting. While I loved L (I wish they would at least tell us what his real name was), and still believe the story should have ended with his death, that doesn't mean it sucks without him. I've loved all 84 chapters that I've read so far and can't wait to see what happens next
That said, Why do people hate Light so much? I mean, I hear a lot of distaste for his character everywhere I see Death Note discussion. Personally, he's been my favorite character since the begining and only continues to grow more lovable. So he's working harder to "win" right now rather than bettering the world. Especially being he tried the note because he was bored, doesn't it make more sense that when someone challenges him, rather than continue killing monotonously and try to ignore it, he'd step up to the challenge and try to come out on top? It keeps things interesting both for the reader and for Light. His actions actually make sense and it's not as if he slaughters innocent people randomly. He only eliminates the ones who will hurt him in the ultimate game he's playing. He hasn't now and never did really lose sight of his goal, it's just that the opposition has gotten more intense so he's got to fight harder to keep himself out of a corner. I mean, if he got caught, he'd never make it, but if a few innocent people have to die to stay in the game and for the greater good, then that's just a sacrifice he has to make.
Light is a great change of pace as far as protagonists go. He tries to take the most efficient course of action even if it's not necessarily the happiest and most pleasant. I'll root for him until the end ^_^

I love/hate Light at the same time...:P Even though I understand that he's trying to "win" the game he's playing, I don't see Light as a "hero" in any way. Sometimes, his desire to win seems to overshadow his goal of actually ridding the world of evil. I also don't like how he seems to see living people as his play-things; ever since he got the Death Note, he's been using it as if he's some god ruling over his own little world. I suppose, in the end, he wants to rule over the world...and there's a possibility that that will happen. He's a great protagonist, though...I've never seen a character like him. (He has his good points and his bad points...making him a mix between a hero and villain. ^_^) I guess, even in the back of my mind, I'm hoping he will achieve his goal...but I think he deserves a punishment as well. :P

I wouldn't say it gets that bad... Sort of Spoilers:
The manga was never without its sour parts here and there (after the first few volumes) but after a certain event the concept of the manga changes from what most were expecting of the series. I think most people thought the series would end at a certain point but it kept going. I'd assumed it would end after it hit the end of volume seven, I didn't see this as a longer series.
That said... without saying much that would spoil people (I don't know now if I needed spoiler tags -_-; ) I think it's still a good manga just not as great as it once was, like many people because of that I stopped reading the manga scanned. I just couldn't bring myself to anticipate what would happen next or anxiously wait until I'd be able to download new chapters like I once did. After I put it off long enough I fell so far behind I figured I'd just continue reading it when I bought the series in English.
I mostly agree with Manafairy about Raito, he has an excellent character design! He brings up so many questions about morality and you never know what he's planning ^_^

I personally love Raito/Light, and would like to cosplay as him (at least right now, I never know who might show up next and make me want to cosplay as them). Then again, I've always loved "brilliant villians" like him, though I'm not sure if he can really be called a villian. I love L the same; both are incredible characters and are practically geniuses.
I'm following the domestic release and don't plan on reading scanlations, but I have spoiled myself with all the spoilers (I love spoilers). My thought is, if the series turns bad, well, then it turns bad, but I'm going to stick with it as long as I think it is good.

And I tottttaallllyyy just read a spoiler I shouldn't have read! :P

yep, I agree. he thinks he's right that's why he's doing that. i mean, who draws the line between right and wrong?
I really like L, and actually, i almost lost interest when i learned that L died. but it's too good to pass. i really like the idea of Mello and Near. they seem to be a good replacement for L.and Raito is cornered now, Mikami might do good also as Kira. however, i dont like the happenings when Light's starting to work with SPK. Near said that they're incapable and Light was almost cornered. Light seemed stupid and incapable at that time so I hate that part. but seems to be going smooth again for Light. lets see...

anyone seen DN Ch 85-86?
looks promising...
Misa lost her memories of the Notebook now and her house is bugged. I feel sorry for Misa, her life halved by the Shinigami Eye Bargain and now she doesnt remember anything. Mogi and Aizawa still confused. Mikami seems a good choice as acting Kira. Though a twist had happened. Since Demegawa was killed by Mikami, there's no spokesperson now for Kira so Mikami decided to choose someone. He chose Kiyomi Takada, Light's Ex-GF, what a great choice. Action goes back to Japan, and Near's determined to end it there, he just needs solid evidence.
next chapter should be good...

I can't wait until January-?-when 3 comes out. It is so good I'm almost temptd to read scanlations...well almost, I'd rather not. But still, It should be great. If anthing I'd read Hikaru No Go scanlations because I have to wait 4 MONTHS! :( fer each voolume...but still, I'll have to get a back issue of SJ.(Of course the only month I miss SJ is the one where all of my SJ GN's take off...so I gotta get september than I should be able to continue in HNG, YYH, and Naruto, though volume 8 of Naruto is out now.
TOO BAD DN ISN'T IN SJ....WOULDN'T THAT BE GREAT!
OK, I'm done going off topic...sorry.
If any of you guys have questions on anything DN, ask away, because it is a shame to let such a great series' thread die. :(

she had her life halved twice didn't she? Maybe she'll end up the second Kira yet again later on and get it halved again :shifty: *Still finds Misa's stupidity to be really annoying and hopes she dies sooner than later*

it's a good thing they told us who she was as I had completely forgotten about her -_-; Anyways, they really left on a horrible cliffhanger but it's great to see Light actually working directly again. I mean, he's hardly left that computer screen since the time jump  It's been a long time since he had any kind of advantage, so it should be interesting to see how this plays out.
On a semi-unrelated side note, I hope they develope this Matt character (you know, Mello's minion). He seems like he could be cool, but I have a feeling he's going to end up forgotten :(

I'm only reading the US releases too, so only up to volume 2, but so far it's fantastic! Probably one of my most favorite mangas ever. Light seems to be the perfect example of absolute power corrupting absolutely. I mean, he starts out with the best of intentions, but he very quickly develops a God complex and it's all downhill from there. The cat-and-mouse game between Light and L is very exciting, and I can't wait to see what develops. I've been reading about how the story degenerates after a certain event, so that's a bummer, but I'll still read it to see for myself--I think the story and art are both brilliant.

I love Death Note, I never read a series where a cat-and-mouse type of thing was so carefully planned out and extremely entertaining. I read up to Chapter 48-49 in scanlations until I heard VIZ is gonna release it. However I may turn back to the scanlations if VIZ edits Death Note AGAIN. If you read the English Volume 1, in the scene where Raito/Light writes that biker guy to get killed by an accident, the scene where the truck stuck the guy is cropped out. I'm very willing to support Death Note in the States, but if VIZ keeps on editing any of it's manga, they will lose my dedication to this.
But anyway, I'm shocked that not a lot of people like Raito/Light. He's not my fave character, but he's my second fave and I admire him a lot. He's not your typical goody-goody hero, he's a human being who will do wrong if it messes with his ideals. His intentions to create a better world and his determination is good, but how he goes about to accomplish that may be questionable and a dangerous ground for discussion. His goals isn't any different for most human beings who want to improve the world, but what he does for it is just an alternate and less traveled road. But he does kinda distrub me on how sincere he is to make an utopia that he's willing to scare the public into being good citizens, it really stuck me when I re-read the first volume how child-like his zeal was, despite he was the smartest 17-18 year old high school student in Japan. But he's a complex character and taking him at face-value on what he does is gonna make him a bad guy in good guy clothes but I don't it's that easy to catagorize Raito/Light. Everything he does, whether killing criminals or police, is for his goal. That's admirable about him, even though it seems twisted....
*sigh* And it's alos disapointing that some people are saying that Death Note lose it's luster after a certain event event happens, but I think I'm gonna stick to this until the end, or it gets really crappy....

As Ariel said, I like that he is not your typical hero. He's like the mirror of society, his intentions are good, but power gets him a little outta control. I can't wait to see the thrilling chase continue in volume 3.

I just got the first 2 volumes and practically ignored my family during thanksgiving because of them. I know Light is a bad bad boy but I can't help but cheer him on. But Ryuk thats my favorite character right now. He's too funny.
Actually Light's intentions are what I don't like about him. I'm not really a clense the world of crime time of guy. I don't see those as good intentions. Otherwise I don't mind him defending his power and trying to get over in the world.

My dear, I believe the writer is the genius in this story. After all, who gives Light the words to speak and the thoughts to think? ;)
Death Note the most sophisticated and complex story I have -ever- read, manga or not. I'd be reading more of it right now if it wasn't for my dastardly homework.

Ha ha, very true. These creators ARE genuises. But of course Yumi Hotta(I think) already has many points in my book for Hikaru No Go. Yay Yumi Hotta. Also, Yay other creator. ;)

Ah, well, while I can agree with that, all you really need to know is a thorough knowledge of the game. Heck. According to that logic, I could make a really captivating story using the FFVII battle system. xD
But see, the difference with Death Note's writer--Tsugumi Ohba--is that he can make a good psychological thriller with many different routes of thought. It's just such a (pardon my French) mind-**** that it ranks up HIGH on the "genius scale" for me. I think there's a subtle difference between creating a captivating battle of wits in chess and creating a captivating battle of wits of the mind, if you understand my stand on the matter.

No, no Death Note anime yet (sadly)...:( But, since the series is so popular, I wouldn't be surprised if an OAV was made at least. (I don't know if the story would work for an anime TV series...:P) I could also see Death Note going the live-action TV series route...It would make a really great drama series, IMO. ;) (I wonder who would play Light? Got my copies of the first two volumes from Amazon today and read the first.
My take on it is that Light has been ahnded a power that no human -- hell, no being -- could ever accept and remain whole. And from the start it is driving him mad -- robbing him of his compassion, filling him with contempt for everyone who is not himself (for really, what human being could ever live up to the standard he seeks to impose?). He says he wants to cleanse the world -- well, so did Hitler, and we all know how that turned out.
Light is an anti-hero, no doubt, a compelling monster but a monster nontheless. But this is a world in which "good" as most people understand it is a meaningless concept, as witnessed by the cruel game "L" plays with "Kira" when announcing his presence.
What I am expecting Light to discover, too late of course, is that absolute power and absolute damnation are the same thing, that he has set a trap for himself that he cannot escape.

Light was fantastic until L's death. The whole series just got too forced.. Near is catching on to things much faster than L was, and that's just wrong. Mello is just manservice. Light is reaching the point where he apparently wants to remove those who are not contributing to society, which I feel is a real reach for the author.. you'd think he'd run out of notebook paper with the criminals alone! I actually prefer Mikami at the moment, because he has a history with criminal justice, while Light was just a bored student when he got a hold of the note.

Even as someone who is still firmly in love with the story, I have to agree. While I actually do like Near, he was definately a bit too fast, especially considering he didn't have nearly as much evidence to go on nor had he met and observed Light in person like L had. The story definately feels forced to continue at times, but all in all, it's still well written and well worth reading. It's a shame they couldn't have ended it where they wanted to, as I would have liked to see where the author was actually going originally.
Mello is just manservice
:lol: So true. I mean, on top of his black leather, his newly acquired, rediculously sexy face scar, and his recently introduced manservant, he's pretty much of no use to the story anymore outside of the eye candy. Not that I'd ever complain about eye candy, but I'd like him to actually be accomplishing something -_-;
Light is reaching the point where he apparently wants to remove those who are not contributing to society, which I feel is a real reach for the author.. you'd think he'd run out of notebook paper with the criminals alone!
Once again, so true. With all that paper ripping and the excessive amounts of names he writes in there, it's amazing that he's no fear of running out of paper. On a somewhat unrelated side note, it would be kind of cool if they had kept the rule in the initial pitch chapter that said if you erase a name, the person is revived. Not that I'd like it used constantly, but I really wish L could some how not be dead
I actually prefer Mikami at the moment, because he has a history with criminal justice, while Light was just a bored student when he got a hold of the note.
Mikami being the best looking character in the story has nothing to do with the preference I'm sure :P But seriously, he's the character I'm the most interested in right now. It still seemed somewhat random that Light would send the Note to a complete stranger, but I can't bring myself to complain about the introduction of someone so cool. Hopefully he'll steal the spotlight more often, as he's not getting enough face time as of right now (Neither is Ryuk, just for the record. I miss the time when he was an important character :()

Light was fantastic until L's death. The whole series just got too forced.. Near is catching on to things much faster than L was, and that's just wrong.
Heck, I'm still in the 60s (chapter-wise), and even I caught on to that early. It's just a bit disappointing. Good story, nonetheless, but disappointing. It's like the author ran out of steam, or had to majorly condense the story. ._.
On a random side-note: I <3 these spoiler tags. Are they somewhat new? Or am I just extremely unobservant?

whoa, surprise, surprise! what an unexpected turn of events. Mikami called Taka-san in time when she's with Light. :) . I was actually clapping when i read it and my officemates' wondering why im clapping :P .everything's going so good again hahaha! and Near is still clueless.

Ahh! Death Note! *glomps*
Everyone keeps saying how bad the series gets after L dies, but I actually think that, if it hasn't gotten more interesting, it hasn't made me lose my interest, because of that, anyway. It's really the whole thing of "the opposition thinks it's Light, and then they don't, and then they do, and then they die, and then they do again..." it's like... "Catch him already and be through with it!" <_< Or maybe that's just me. I really don't like Light... especially since L died... because I loved L... :crybaby: But I do understand why people like him, and I sort of admire him for his determination--it won't turn out well, and now he seems to be more obsessed with "winning" (as has been said) than actually cleansing the world of crime... and I can't see this turning out in the end well for him. But I still admire him, a little, I just don't like him.
I'm a fan of both Mello and Near, though. I suppose that Near did catch on a little too fast, but if it took him as long as it took L, then the series would get boring. So it really didn't bother me that much.
Mello, though... is starting to bother me. Mello made things interesting, with the kidnapping and the raid and people dying and all that crap, but now that he has basically no function in the story... Mello made things interesting, so I'm looking forward to seeing him have a part again.
It's a shame they couldn't have ended it where they wanted to, as I would have liked to see where the author was actually going originally.
They wanted to end it in a different place? I didn't know that.

Wow... I didn't think it was possible to pass over so many spoilers to get to the end of a thread. I love DeathNote. It was recommended by my friend who works at the manga store ^_^ So awesome that I came back like 2 days later and picked up Volume 2.
People say they don't like Light, but really. He's smart and cunning, but still has that inner evil in him. I personally can't stand 'L'... He drives me completely mad. For someone who's supposed to be the "good" to counteract Light, he's a bit childish for me. He's just as set to get Light as Light is to get L. Ryuk, on the other hand, is a barrel of laughs. Oh, the apples...

*snorts* You've got me. XD It's just that he's a big nerd, and I love that. >_> And the way he was fanboying over Light.. and Takada is doing the same. XD I keep thinking, wow, I cant wait to witness that orgy. It makes sense to introduce Mikami, even though I was glad the author was showing that Light can not only handle 1 major threat with L, but 3 -- Near, Mello, and the guys he works with that suspect him.
Ahhh, chapter 89. It was delicious. :D THe only thing that's frustrating me is that Mello is.. still just manservice. Manafairy is right, beyond him and his manservant looking pretty, I'm not interested at all. I think the author regrets offing L.. it's obvious the author originally wanted to end the series at that point, for a Hitchcock-esque appeal. But now Near is starting to FINALLY feel like L (be it a watered-down L) becuase it is evolving back into that chess game. Light moves his piece, Near moves his, Mello looks pretty, the other inverstigators look like idiots, Mikami fangirls over something, rinse and repeat. How long will this last? D:

Well, honestly, some times its hard to sit there and read about them sitting around talking about who Kira. I dont think i could take it, having whole episodes with them just sitting there talking to eachother.
Other than that, if they cut down on what i mentioned above, i think they could make it into a decent 13 ep series. Crispin Freeman as L, and if they really did make you want to hate Misa, they could have Sandy Fox as her VA (god her voice irks me)

I could see Crispin Freeman voicing L too. That would be very interesting to hear, IMO. ^_^
Light...Who could possibly play Light? He would need a voice that sounds innocent to people...but has a sinister tone for darker scenes. Hmm...I think Johnny Bosch could pull off Light's voice...That would be very interesting to hear too. ^_^

first he figures out that L/Light is Kira in no time flat, and in about 5 minutes, he magically figures out all the details about Mikami, including the notebook being sent to him, and him not being able to get in touch with Light at first. Death Note is definatly my favorite series at this point. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion, this is a truly thought-provoking and inteligent series. It has the ability to keep me on the edge of my seat without using mindless fight-scenes and gore like most shounen series I've seen, and instead, the 'hero' and the 'villian' (who is who depends completely on your persepctive) use inteligence, tactics, and trickery to try and out-smart one another and hopefully, in the end 'win'.
I love all of the characters and everything about this series, including the art.
I've only read up to volume 3 so far but I'm going to look for the fourth volume tomorrow. I just hope it's there!

With Light being shot to death (by Matsuda of all people), and the next chapter of the manga being called "The End" its just my guess that the next chapter is the last of the series

Chapter 106 is when my spoiler happens, so by my guess 107'll be the final. Seems like they put 9 chapters in each english volume, so i'd guess theres still another 8 or so books before it'll be done in english (at the 2 month release schedule, another year and a half).

...That has to be one of the best movie posters I've ever seen. That one will definitely capture a lot of attention, just from being dark and gloomy-looking. And, just like I thought, that actor does not disappoint as Light (as far as looks are concerned)! Now, the only thing I'm waiting for is an alternate poster with Ryuk (or even L) on it. *can't wait to see if that happens*
So...it seems Death Note might finally be coming to an end. You can't imagine how surprised I was to hear that Light was shot and is presumably dead. Even though he died, I still feel that justice was served. But...I'm still surprised the series is ending (maybe the chapter entitled The End really isn't the actual end of the story? Maybe it's just the end of Light's saga or something). Hm...I guess I'll just have to wait and see...

Chapter 107 is out. One thing stood out big time in the chapter.
Light crawling to Ryuk and asking for his help. But instead, Ryuk puts Light's name in the Death Note. You can guess what happens from there ;-)
And now, supposedly 108 will be the final chapter (ends with "Fin"). I hope it wont be over, Misa is still alive, it just cant be an ending unless that ditz dies.

I'm still thinking there's going to be more to this story. I mean...it's so popular, I doubt people want to see it end! I wouldn't be surprised if somehow, this is only the end of Light's saga with the Death Note...Who knows what will happen if someone else gets their hands on one. But...then again, there is the fact that the author originally wanted to end it with the end of the part with L (from the rumors I heard), so I suppose chapter 108 will most likely be the ending (but who knows what twists and turns could take place...you can never be too sure with Tsugumi Ohba's amazing skills with plot twists).
And all I can say for Light is...He had it coming for a long time now.

I just watched the trailer...and I'm amazed by how well the adaption from the manga to live-action movie seems! I was especially happy to see how Light looked...since Tatsuya Fujiwara fits him perfectly (especially with that smug look on his face)! I was also surprised by L and how he looked. (I'm an L fan, so I'm happy that he still maintains a slightly odd look without looking too "freakish.") ...and Ryuk looks just as I imagined he would look...if not a bit too realistic for me to take. -_-;
Well...I can't wait to see the full film now. ^_^ But, of course, Viz will definitely get the rights to the live-action film before the second film debuts in Japan (especially since Death Note seems to be one of Viz's more popular manga titles right now). It's just a matter of time... :)

There's going to be an anime adaption...? O_O *cheers* I can't wait to see how it turns out. ^_^ This seems like it's going to be a big year for Death Note, what with the ending of the manga, the new live-action films, and an anime adaption (which will hopefully be airing right around Halloween XD). I can't wait to see how everything turns out. ^_^
a couple of questions first.......dosent the actor in the live action film trailer seem both to short and not athletic enough to be light...it seems like they only tried to play one side of light....
Well...we can't really judge how he is as Light until we see him act in the movies, can we? ;) Honestly, I think he fits the part of Light very nicely; to me, Light needed to be the kind of guy who wouldn't be suspected of being Kira right away because of how he presented himself to the world (such as being a nice and quiet student). So...as a fan of the manga, I'm satisfied with Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light. ^_^
my second question is why do you all hate misa so much...iv only read the first 4 books wich all i could get my hands on in my town(iv ordered the rest on the internet) it seems to me that misa is just a victem .....alll she ever does is try to help light and he only seems to hate her(intern you the readers ahte her as well)....why is that...if its just that i havent gotten har eough into the series to know then thats cool... im juust curious
Personally...I dislike Misa because she basically only fell in love with Light because he was Kira. I think any guy who claimed to be Kira would have been sufficient for her since, to her, Kira was a hero because he dealt justice to her parents' murderer. So...that's mostly why Misa annoys me. As far as her being the victim...I would agree since she's being used in Light's devious schemes.
And, yet, I still can't believe more people don't hate Light. :| I immediately started hating him in vol. 2 when he started killing off people simply to keep his little game going for a while longer. Now...I despise him for the creep he is.

Yeah, I agree. Light's a bastard. He uses Misa, he kills innocent people who get even a little bit in the way of his plan... That's one of the things that makes Death Note such a good series. It constantly makes you question yourself as to whether you should be considering Light the hero or the villain.

The story is getting a lot better now, although I still feel like one of the few people who's rooting for Light based on some of the people I've talked to.
As for Misa, she's probably my favorite character behind Light, I just like her. I've even got a poster of her, Rem and Gellus that I found at a convention.

Did you know that Takeshi Koga, who was the Chairman in Iron Chef is playing Souichirou Yagami? When I first saw the trailer, I was like "Dang, that guy who is playing Souichirou looks awfully familiar" and did a small research and found Koga is playing the part and I remember his name in all those Iron Chef epsiodes I watched (<--- was a big Iron Chef fan).

"Thank you for reading.
Please look forward to reading Ohba Tsugumi and/or Obata Takeshi's next series.
This story of "DEATH NOTE" has ended."
Not sure if it is a translation thing, but by the wording "THIS" story of Death Note, maybe we'll see another series based on the ending of chapter 108.
Ending: A year after the death of Kira/Light, everyone seems to be back to normal, though Matsuda has some doubts on whether killing Light was good or bad in the end. We find out that Mikami died in prison after 10 days (Matsuda suspects that Near had him in his pocket from the moment Near got a hold of the Death Note), both books were burned so they couldnt be used.
All of the people who were under Light are now under Near (Now going under the name "L"). Non-important discussion about their next plans to go after a syndicate, then we flash to a huge group of people dressed in robes are walking down a mountain, they split to the sides of the path as a girl (the leader) walks up to a rock, places a candle on it, kneels, and prays to Kira-Sama. Then they show the girls face and it's Misa... The end!

There was a Death Note profile (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/specials/news/20060618p2g00m0dm002000c.html) in the Mainichi Daily News to commemorate the first movie's release. It's worth a read if you're a Death Note fan. (But, be warned, there are some spoilers throughout the article...so read with caution.)
Anyway...from this little profile, I came across some interesting information; it seems that there's a video game in the works. Now...with that, I can only wonder how they're going to make the story fit for a video game. (Maybe I'm just lacking the imagination to see it right now... ) Still, though, it would be interesting to play.
So...with an anime, two movies (one of which is already out in theaters in Japan), a video game, and a novel coming out this year, this seems to be a big year for Death Note. ^_^

I still wonder why they added a girlfriend for Light in the movie. Did they do that, perhaps, to make him seem more human? (Just curious...since it seemed like they stayed rather faithful to the manga aside from that little detail.)
Anyway...it seems like Death Note's first movie has gotten fairly good reviews. (I read another one today that seemed favorable towards the movie.) I suppose this first movie is just a bit of a preview of the possibilities for the second movie. Honestly, I can't wait to see how the events leading up to volume 7 are adapted for the second movie. Nope, it wasn't Takada (who, IIRC, was in one of the earlier manga volumes). It was an original character named Shiori Akino (from what ANN has listed). In the manga, though, Light was quite popular with the ladies...so, from what I can remember, he had at least two girlfriends in the manga before Misa.
Anyway...if I have to, I'll buy this movie on R2 DVD. I want to see it that badly. :P

what I liked at first about Deathnote is that its not clear-cut. I view Light as human, neither good nor evil. He has his ego and his will to dominate and manipulate, but also his ideals and his brilliance.

I just finished book 7 yesterday and now I'm all excited about Near and Mello's appearance.
Anyway, could someone offer me a spoiler and tell me how these two are related to L? I'm thinking Near has got to be his little brother or something.
Anyone? :)

Well, They grew up in the same orphanage that wammy establised. It was basically a institute for young kids to see if they have what it takes to surpase "L". and Near was the closest to do it. (IMO he's already better than "L") and in the second of that was Mello, but when he found out that Near would succed "L", he left the institue.

Wow...I just finished reading the last volume. Very compelling storyline and higher-order manga material. I put the overall quality of it on par with volumes 1-14 of Berserk, and all of Akira, Ghost in the Shell and other highly intelligent writings.
For once, the main character isn't your typical clueless guy trying to get a living, but a full-fledged madman with sharp wits and the drive to use destructive powers. I loved how we got the point of view of "the villian", if you will. So overall, it's a dark, smart and ruthless title that is garanteed to make you think.
I now dismay that I will not find any manga that is on par with such thought-out material as this.

Just finished it. I liked it pretty hard, but I liked the original L even harder. So there was a sort of. . .conflict of interests? (is that the right phrase?)
it was very wordy, too. Wordy in the way of... the JAPAN INC (http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/2269.html) manga.

*sigh* I'm finished reading Death Note. It was good while it lasted. But I must admit, after my favorite character died I lost a bit of interest in it. A while ago there was a spoiler about the ending of the manga. I accidentally read it...and I'm thankful I did. My roommate made a bet with me about the ending and another friend bet that I'd lose the bet I made with my roommate (both are art majors)...I ended up winning 2 lovely pictures!
Thank God for spoilers!

For those of you interested, I'm looking to start a small Death Note text roleplay group. So if anybody would like to decide the fate of their favorite characters via roleplay, feel free to shoot me an e-mail. The means through which sessions are conducted (AIM/MSN/etc) are flexible, as are the times. Of course, since this is roleplay, freedom from time/plot constraints is allowed.. So any characters from any point may partake in the fun.
Serious replies only, please. If you like Death Note and/or roleplay, why not give it a shot? Send me an e-mail with what character you're interested in, if you've roleplayed before, and what sort of direction you'd like to take your roleplay in.
So far, any and all roles are open. With the exception of Misa.

i think its like how they were saying in the last chapter, people still believe that kira is just "resting" so these people seem to be extreme followers and im guessing the children are believed to be like reincarnates of kira or something. maybe that girl has a death note since her eyes did seem to look like she had the death god eyes. my guess is that there will be a contunuation of death note....that is if the creator is not still in jail...

I've finished the whole manga series, its absolutely amazing. It does slow down a bit in my opinion (where the anime is at now) with the whole WHO IS KIRA? the Yatsuba group thing, but it picks up right after that have no worries this manga owns all.
To those who have finished the manga here are my thoughts
Good ending, I actually wish Light died in a more brutal way, but in a way his death was quite fitting, seeing as how there is nothing for him after he dies, its quite ironic. I originally thought that only people who use the death note have no life after death, but I guess Ryuk says this applies to everyone. However this is one of the main quests brought up at the end of the series, Hows does Ryuk know? He has not died yet.
Some people preferred the earlier volumes with L VS. Kira, I was that way too for a while, but after the Yotsuba (sp) group mini arc died out it got really great again.
I wish I got to know a little bit more about the WAMMY's House, like how they obtained orphans that were incredibly gifted, they're real parents etc, but I can also see how that wouldn't fit into the main plot of the show.
L's name is L Lawliet. Or low-light, confirmed in the manga special volume 13.
Also in the second movie where his name flashes briefly.
I loved Mellow / Near and how they evetually worked together, one of my favorite scenes is
Together we surpassed L. lOLOLOL YOU OWNED KIRA
I am extremely impressed with this manga and I wonder if there will be a follow up, it'll be interesting to see because that girl at the end did not look like Misa, and I believe she had Shinigami eyes.

Viz gave them Cease and Desist papers to all the known fansubbing groups to stop on June 22. People spectulate that one of the fansubbing groups might use a persona to finish the last two episodes.

I lost most of my interest at volume 7. I'm still buying the rest so I can see the end, but my main focus on it is gone at this point. I didn't like what happened to you-know-who. That's what made it for me. It's still very good up to that point, though.

^ You know, I found alot of people who loved you-know-who usually had near to no interest in the second arc or thought it sucked. Luckily, while I did like you-know-who, I wasn't at all affected plus I liked his successors more. While I do think that First Arc > Second Arc, the second arc was pretty damn good, especially after Volume 9 (I admit that Volume 8 is the most boring of the 12).
But it does sucks that some people find it fun to spoil the whole series, like a certain someone on the previous page. There should be a rule against spoiling series unless it was a thread that discusses the series as a whole. I can't help but feel that the ending of Death Note would've had more impact if I wasn't spoiled by some troll who never gave any indication that it was a spoilerish thread (it was not here but on deviantArt of all places). But I had to really rely on the journey there and was still surprised on some aspects.

Did the ending suck as much as I thought it did? Did the entire second half suck as much as I thought it did?
Honestly, I loved it early on. L and Light were both kick***, and Ryuk was cool. Watari was pretty kick***, Light's dad was actuallly okay, and even Misa wasn't bad early on.
Near and Mello both sucked. Mello seemed a bit out of his league, and Near was trying to fill in L's shoes, but it just didn't seem right. Neither of them had the personality that L did. Towards the end their was really only one personality, as every one else faded to the background.
Is it just me or were the women in that all tools? There was one truly smart female character, but she was killed before she had a chance. (naomi misora)
There is no difference between L, Light, and Near, except that Light found the deathnote. Mello was a bit different, I think, but he would still would have acted the same. They were all egotistical and put their egos before anything else, including their ultimate goals. Had Light not found the note, he would have become a fantaic anti Kira detective, and devoted his life to stopping Kira. Had L found the note, he would have experimented, then been drawn in, just as Light was. He also would have believed that he was the only one smart enough and moral enough to make it work.
I think that given that Ryuk had to kill Light, it should have ended with Light killing everyone, saying "I've won. Its over" Ryuk then agrees, finishes eating an apple, and commenting on how his entertainment is over, kills Light. That way, everybody wins. Light wins, Kira's reign ends. That way, the only one who's ego is vindicated is dead.

I have to say I really loved Near. He was such a cute little nut, playing with his finger puppets and toys. Mello was not my favorite, but he did have his moments.
The ending wasn't that shocking, but I wanted to see what happened with his mom and sister at the end and how they found out. I also wanted to see the world's reaction to his death, and a prequel story about Light before the DN would've been a nice addition. A little more detail on what his personality was like before the whole DN debacle would've been great. And what about Ryuk? His DN is gone and he's terribly bored in the Shinigami realm. Does he steal another notebook and start the whole thing again? There is so much I would've liked them to expound on.
JMHO, of course.

I just finished the manga today after seeing episode 37 of the anime series. (There was no way in hell I could have waited until next week to see what happens next!) It was great and disappointing at the same time...
Light got what was coming to him, as others have said. It was a little sad seeing him squirm, despite the fact that I hated him in full (okay, I admit I still thought he was brilliant) after he started using Misa and he became more self-serving.
I'm glad Near won though. It would have sucked to see him suffer from a heart attack. God he was so brilliant and awesome in those last pages too! L would've been so proud for sure. ^_^
I agree with Cherryice and think a prequel of what Light was like would be before the Deathnote would be cool. I actually watched the first episode all over again to remember what his character was like. God, he ramps up awful fast, from being normal and dismissive about the note, then testing it, to full blown psycho. That all happened in the first episode. Kind of crazy if you think about it I guess...

In my opinion, I really didn't like the ending. I mean yes we all know that light was going to die but they could have at-least made it so he put up more of a fight. He could have tried to take a gun and fight back a little bit be for he was shot to add a little more suspense. I really wanted him to just live after he was shot and kind of live in hiding till he died. But I guess we all got the "Really Expected ending"

Actually I have a little hope in light still. I agree all the crying was very uncool but theres a chance he might have been acting and left his job to someone trustworthy.....like i dunno...maybe Misa.....she may act a little dumb but she showed even little intelligence by finding Light in a crowd of people. Hehe this anime was full of surprises....maybe Light had something else up his sleeve. :)

Because the Death Note doesn't work like that. You can't kill anyone with it except the one who's name is written down. If you try to control someone to kill another person, they'll just die of a heart attack.

Are you serious about Shonen Jump's rule? Despicable :(
Probably because of the younger audience.
Light has always been my favorite character; his ideals personify his pride. Or something like that o_O
Why Light had to die is beyond me... Light, nooo! Perhaps it was wishful thinking, but I always wanted Light to win. I didn't like when Mello and Near came in; The book was ultimately about the ongoing battle between Light and L until L died. Near was the next biggest threat to Light, and Near had challenged Light to a showdown.
That challenge however was interfered with by Mello; Near would never have won without Mello. Like he said, he is inferior to L, but together they surpass him (That's what he thinks :(). At the end I thought it completely ruined Light's character when he broke down. And Ryuk... If only he was like Rem was to Misa, Light would have an amazing, unbeatable lead.
Perhaps it was Light's pride that made him fall in the end, but it's still sad.

I agree somewhat that he did have to die, but I thought the ending was awful anyway. The buildup to it was just awesome, but the execution left much to be desire. I was hoping Near would die, as he was without a doubt the worst character in the manga. He claims that he was inferior to L, yet nothing seemed to trip him up. It's not as if Light's moves were any less complicated. Oh well, it's time to move on, I guess...
