Like a lot of you I wanted Light to win at the end. But it kind of makes sense seeing as how the Death Note is said to bring misfortune to those who carry it. Not to mention Ryuk told Light he'd be the one to write his name in the Death Note.

I wanted Light to win, but I knew it wouldn't happen. So at best I was hoping Light would lose in a less pathetic way. Breaking down like that at the end is to be expected after how much secrecy he had to live by in his entire adult life. But I'd rather have seen him fall a different way. I never thought Mello and Near to be much against Light, I thought L was a worthy adversary but for some reason he had to die mid way through the series.

I, for some reason, wanted to believe L wasn't dead and some how he'd pop up again later in the series and surprise the hell out of all of us.

.. that's how I feel about it.

It was long ago when I had read this, it was of the first I ever had. It is without a doubt my favorite anime/manga. The manga is indeed better than the anime, I think.

Just finished all 12 volumes. I thought it was a very interesting read and recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a lot of conversation/talking in manga. I really like all the twists and turns through out the books and the ending was exciting to see how Light and Near would confront each other with the evidence. Though like someone else mentioned, I had a feeling in the back of my head that the original L was going to pop up at the end somehow and explain he wasn't dead or something, though it never happened. Has anyone seen the two live action movies? Are they any good?

The two live action movies were "ok" but IMO, I enjoyed the anime a whole lot more, especially since the anime is much closer to the manga than probably the two live action movies combined, LOL.

QFT. I'll never understand why people dislike him! Sad ending to a great character.

Then again, his ending in the anime has him think back on what he's done, right? I read the manga, in which he dies a sad death.

It was all over for me when L died. I watched the rest of the Anime; it was good but, MAN they could have done so much more with L's character. It's almost like the author got bored of Kira vs. L, and just decided to give Light the easy win and move on to other challenges. STUPID. L's relationship with Light was like, the most intriguing part of the story dammit! How DARE they kill him off so carelessly? It wasn't even a cool death. No confrontation, no showdown, no brilliant schemes on Light's part, really. Just a cheap shot from a smitten Shinigami who was worried about her biotch. Death Note could have been the best Anime ever. Now it's just cool. Swing and a miss.

Yes. Exactly. After that incident it went from being a masterpiece for me to a Cool or great anime. The ending to the whole series was atrociously bad to me.It really could have been a masterpiece with just a good ending. Even thouh that incident took place.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

I guess I'll chime in since I never bothered to post my feelings on the Death Note ending.

Like many people, after L was taken out, I think the manga should have ended there. Wrap things up with Light the ruler of the world and I would have been extremely happy. I never liked Near/Mello, nor did I like how easily Aizawa was lead to believe that Light = Kira after following his lead for years after L passed away. I always disliked the ridiculous leaps of logic that L made in order to come to suspect Light of being Kira, and Near took that to the extreme.

I honestly was hoping that Light would take out Near and his whole crew and rule all, even though I knew that this was an unlikely scenario. Its just that throughout the whole series, Lights cunning and genius was displayed time and time again and then in an instant hes outsmarted by this little brat.

Still love the series, just disappointed with the ending I was hoping wouldn't come, but sadly did. I'm sure all those that disliked Light were very happy, but as someone who thoroughly enjoyed his character, I was sad to see him go.

Honestly I was going to, but after looking at the past few pages and how it was all discussing the ending and how I was annoyed having to highlight all the text, I figured anyone reading this far into the thread already knows the ending and that a simple text warning would suffice.

Like most people are saying, I think the series does go downhill after L dies, but since it was at such a highpoint before hand, going downhill doesn't mean bad, I thought it was still great, although Light's incompetence towards the end did make me sad. L was definently better than Near but at least they let you know that. I liked how Near said that individually, him and Mello weren't as good as L, but together, they were as good or even better. I must say though, I was very sad at the end to see Kira lose. Just like Buicovo, I wish that Kira would have won only because I feel so bad for Light. He puts his whole life into this Kira buisness, he comes up with all these brilliant plans to make his plan work, but in the end fail. It was really sad to see. I must say though, I really did like Mikami, I thought he was a great character. I think he had a better reason to be Kira than Light himself, but whatver. :P

I'd just like to comment on one more thing. I absolutely loved in the beginning how they set up Kira and L. They were both these renowned geniuses who were going after each other, and they both wanted JUSTICE. Of course, in their own forms, It was great. Definently, a well written Anime, I really haven't seen much better than this.

Are you serious about Shonen Jump's rule? Despicable :(

Probably because of the younger audience.

Light has always been my favorite character; his ideals personify his pride. Or something like that o_O

Why Light had to die is beyond me... Light, nooo! Perhaps it was wishful thinking, but I always wanted Light to win. I didn't like when Mello and Near came in; The book was ultimately about the ongoing battle between Light and L until L died. Near was the next biggest threat to Light, and Near had challenged Light to a showdown.

That challenge however was interfered with by Mello; Near would never have won without Mello. Like he said, he is inferior to L, but together they surpass him (That's what he thinks :(). At the end I thought it completely ruined Light's character when he broke down. And Ryuk... If only he was like Rem was to Misa, Light would have an amazing, unbeatable lead.

Perhaps it was Light's pride that made him fall in the end, but it's still sad.

I completely agree with his breakdown ruining his character, I loved everything about him so much until that point, I just wish he would have died in a better fashion, everything went with him when he died, he acted like such a baby, and he was so pathetic, I truly pitied him then.

2^I find it so amazing how polarizing these characters are, especially after read your spoiler comment. I've seen just as many fans who think entirely the opposite of Light.

I just spent the whole week re-reading all 12 volumes, a feat previously unheard regarding me. =p It reinvigorated my interest immediately for the anime (following the US release on this one), so, yea, I see this series being added to my short list of perennial favorites that will never get old for me. =3

L has always been my favorite character, then Mikami and then Matsuda.
Same thing as everyone else, the manga was at it's finish when L died. I absolutely hated Near but always found Mello interesting, except for his creepy chocolate fasination. But really, the manga took a turn in two areas that irritated me, if someone was going to take down Light, I wouldve liked it to be L, not some stupid sucsessor. Near should have died with Mello or L should have lived and they screwed both of these up for me. Seeing how pitiful Light's death was wasn't all too suprising, he felt he was unstopable and was snuffed out by some three year old bastard. I wouldn't take it cooly either, even if I was the alternate god. I still find it shocking that Matsuda was the first to pull the gun on Light.

I love how Near makes crazy assumptions that he couldnt possibly know. It seems the last few episodes werent planned as well as the beginning. I mean how could he know with such certainty that mikami is xkira the second he saw him on tv there wasnt any logic in that. How he even “proved” that Light was kira really didnt make sense either. It went something like this “The japanese police are working with kira so the second L must be Kira” Um why?

^I suggest reading the last volume of the manga to help clear a few things...over and over and over...
However, Near still made various escapes in logic that, while understandable on the part of the author, are nontheless annoying.

In Japan, sure. You mean scanlated? Yeah right. Hardly any novels get scanlated, the ones that do are by groups too busy to do much with it (I know that Zeonic-Corps, for example, was translating Gundam Sentinel, but nothing much came of it, only like the first couple chapters, AFAIK).

Anyway. There's this new one shot coming out in Japan. I could only hear "sell out, sell out", but I am dying to read it. It'd suck if it were Misa = Kira AGAIN though.

Has anybody read the new Death Note novel? I liked it a lot. It was about how L came to use the name Ryuzaki. What I found interesting was that the book was narated by Mello. Yes it is about the case that Raye Penber's fiancee, Naomi Misora, and L worked on together. It is 175 pages long, but the story is captivating and kept me up into the late hours reading it. haha I guess I'm just a nerd like that.

What I found interesting was the proto-Death Note...imagine Death Note without the rules, with an actual land of the dead...and an eraser? XD
But it wouldn't be the same in many ways....some appeal would've been definitely been lost.

^I think it was $15 because it was printed on nicer paper than a regular manga. It was also longer, and since ther was a lot more text there was more for people to translate...that's my theory.

I liked it, even though it was a little more pricey. It took me a looong time to get through it though, because it had so much text. I liked it, it was really interesting, and I learned so much about the series that I wanted to go back through and read it again ^_^

Ok, so in the final scenes of the series, 01/28/2010, Light is killed by Ryuk using Ryuk's personal death note. At this time, Light was still the owner of Rem's personal death note which had Ryuk as the current shinigami 'possessing' it. I will write a rule word for word as it appears in the series. This is where I feel the error occurs, if this is my error please let me know because I love this series and would hate to find a discrepancy.
'An individual with shinigami eyes can see the name and lifespan of another human by looking at that person's face. By gaining ownership of a death note, an individual not only gains the ability to kill but also cannot be killed by a death note. From this point on, a person with a death note cannot see the lifespan of other death note owners, including him- or herself.

I think Light's intention was good at first but then it got a little crazy. Even his expression was evil after a while.
But, just to defeat one person (well 2, 3 or 4 if you want to include Misa and the other girl and that guy) they had to use the combined forces of the Japenese Police, Near, Mello, L, CIA, etc.
I think Light just made everyone look really stupid.

One thing keeps bugging me. The only "real" mistake light made(the biggest i think) in the first half of the series is when he used the information he got from his dad's computer. since with a death note you dont need to be close to the victim, so you won't leave any physical evidence of you killing him and you cant be seen near him(no eye wittnesses or cameras that will capture your face) because the death note is mostly used for long (very long)distanced murders. letting L know that kira has the ability to acces information from the police(therfor he is probably related to someone in the police-or specifecly the task force that was set up to capture kira) is the cause for L and the task force to even suspect him of being kira. If light wouldn't have used the information from the task force, basicaly anyone in japan could be kira and therfor a suspect(how many millions are there in japan?) so the chance of light being kira should have been 1/125000000(statisticly), so by using the information he narrowed it down to 1/500(i guese i dont know how many people were possible suspects),and eventually pin poined to him-therfor sealing his own fate.

I just finished the anime on Hulu for the first time, haven't read the manga or seen the live action yet. I signed up just to create this post.

In spite of rigorous google searching I have not found this idea, which would make for a better and more ethical death note reboot.

Light's greatest flaw is not when he accesses the police database, but when he reasons that justice is death to those who do wrong things. His method of instigating social change is totally the WRONG way to use death note in any socially meaningful way.

The way to bring about social change through the selective death of other people is to control martyrs, how they die, who kills them, and what they get to say before they die.

If Light focused his incredible potential on finding the oppressed people around him that are in incredible danger from the evil of others, then he could instead of killing the would be murderers write out the martyrdom of the victims.

As an example of a compelling story, what if the death at Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989) were caused by a death note owner who wanted to bring about radical social change in China?

I feel this plot device of "I want to make martyrs stand out in beautiful more compelling ways that bring about social change" is 100x more compelling than "I want to kill evil doers for the sake and name of justice".

Yeah, but I'm a bit of an extremist in that regard. I've never liked Light, even from the very beginning (when it seemed that his intentions were just). He strikes me as a textbook sociopath, which is not something I appreciate in my protagonists. :)

L, on the other hand, is one of the most original characters ever to appear in manga. And likable, too -- not an easy thing to accomplish.
