I've read recently that Mai HIME has been lisenced in America. I've looked through a few of the major sites but can't seem to find the dvd's for sale. Can anyone help me out?

Since Bandai licensed fairly recently, I wouldn't expect it AT LEAST until sometime in the middle of next year. I mean c'mon, Bandai hasn't even started releasing Eureka 7 or Gundam Seed Destiny...yet. So you may be in for a wait...sorry. -_-;

The license was announced not too long ago. It takes time to produce a dub, DVD, ect. Have some patience, my friend. :)

Yes it has been licensed. I am very excited myself.
The licensing was recent though. I doubt there will be any DVD advertisments until Bandai(it is Bandai right?) gets ready to release it. I'm hoping that'll be sometime next year but who knows. The best would be to just keep checking their site for any announcements on release dates.

Yes, it's BEI. Though, you never know, SUNRISE could be handling the production for the R1 release. :naughty: Just a thought.

Ah, thanks for verifying. It slipped my mind on who exactly got the rights to it.

They took almost a year to tell us when the first Scrapped Princess disk will be released...
If it really takes that long to prepare the first disk, why are the subsequent disks released every few months?

I wonder if they will be editing that retarded thing mid-way that completely anal-rapes the episode before it. I hope they don't call it "The first shoe in space".
OK... it wasn't that bad, but it was still kinda out there.
If you've seen those two episodes, you should know so I don't need to explain it with spoiler tags.
Now don't get me wrong: I love the series, it's just that one part that I have objections about.

I can't wait for the DVDs, but I figure it will be awhile till they're released, but I'm hoping for a early-mid 06 release.

Mmmh. The epsiode preview after that totally ruined the next episode. And the next episode didn't end up explaining anything. Where the hell did she end up? And why is Kagutschi back to normal?

Hell, the entire rest of the series didn't explain anything. It was as if it never happened. I sense a plot to quickly end an episode based on a time limit, budget, etc etc. >.>

What is there to have objections about? The point was to leave it a mystery on how she came back. Why bother explaining something that was obviously going to happen?

Depending on whether Mai Hime will be shown on TV the DVDs might not start coming out until late 2006. They have to cast for the dub before they do anything and I'm not sure they've even done that.

I'm sure they've at least got the cast. Bandai probably had this series long before they announced it. I'd be surprised it they don't also have Mai Otome already and we'll hear that announced over the summer con season. I'm guessing/hoping a spring 2006 release for the first dvd. Bandai hasn't released much I'm interested in so I haven't kept up, but what shows do they have out now and when are they ending? Scrapped Princess in particular, since Hime will probably be replacing that.

If it keeps up its current release schedule of one disc every other month it would be done in February. However Animeondvd.com is listing the final volume as being released on 1/24/2006.

I can do without Otome as that show just plain out sucks. However, I hope Bandai releases the first volume no later than March. After all, the longer it takes them to start, the longer it takes to finish. Thus, if they start in March, and the series is 6 volumes long (there is no reason for it not to be 6), it wouldn't be until Jan 07 when we'd get the final volume, and that is just way too long.

It's only five episodes in. That's just a little early to make that sort of call. Personaly, I've rewatched almost all of Mai-Hime except teh first few episodes becuase tehy sucked the big one.

Licensing costs could push it to seven volumes. Not that I expect that from Bandai, since they run pretty standard with 6 volumes while everyone else has a standard of 7. But Jerry said back before he left that in the future costs could force them to release some series on 7 discs rather than six.
I wouldn't expect the series before April. They have to pace it out with thier other releases, along with what others are releasing in the same time frame. And they've already released thier list of solicitations for February, and no Hime mentioned yet.

Except Hime had a mystery and everything interesting going on just in the first episode alone. Otome has what, a girl that you know is the real princess walk around in a stupid looking dress and try her best not to get ****ed so she can stay a wannabe sailor senshi? I don't think so. Not only is the plot just plain stupid, but all 5 episodes were boring. Nothing is happening, and I for one am no longer watching the series. Thank god it has nothing to do with Hime, otherwise I'd have slapped the writers around for stupidity. It is like watching Yugioh and Gx, they are completely different shows, one good, one just down right awful.
Crawlspace, I don't see licensing being an excuse to increase the volume count. If they are so worried about profits, then they should do something like releasing t-shirts, ALL OSTs (something Bandai lacks in), gashapons, etc.

Well, to each their own. I thought the early episodes of HiME sucked excessive amounts of donkey wang, well the first few eps. of Otome are fun - albeit slow.

You do realize that all of those things cost even more money to get the licensing and distribution rights to? Though it would be nice to have some cds and figures. But anyway, they need to make a certain amount of money off the dvd sales. They take a guess at how many units each disc will sell at a certain price point, and then release the number of discs necessary to make back the costs and still get a reasonable profit. Bandai up until now has been able to buck the trend of 7 discs and sell series on 6, while still making back costs and a presumably reasonable profit. But costs going up might mean they have to raise the disc count to 7 for certain series to add in consumer dollars to pay for rising dvd licensing costs. Simple as that. Doesn't mean they will, just that Jerry warned us they might have to.

The English dub sucks in so many ways it's criminal. Shizuru in particular. She sounds like Ellie May just off the turnip truck, and it's going to be impossible to take this character seriously in later volumes when you HAVE to take her seriously. Southern accents are all well and good, and in real life, damn sexy. Why can't dubbers ever get them right?

I'm not a fan of the Canadian dubs. Blue Waters makes REALLY poorly done dubs like Crest of the Star, Ceres & Flame of Recca for example. There were a few times. Sometimes they can be decent to good like with Zeta Gundam, G Gundam, Jubei-chan & what I consider their best, Zoids: Chaotic Century.
I'v seen the first three volumes of Mai-Hime, but diddn't even check out the dub. If it was done by another group like Bang Zoom then I'd watch it for sure! But not Blue Waters or the Ocean Group.

They do get it right. Like in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. And I love Kira Vincent-Davis's accent as Osaka in Azumanga Daioh, its really cute. The accents wern't over the top & diddn't sound fake. It helps that ADV is in Texas....not Canada.

Perhaps it was the crappy acting that made both characters sound horrible, then. :P Still, the vast majority of Southern accents in anime are fake sounding and over the top. But again, bad voice acting in general makes it all that much worse. Sorry, but I think the Azu dub was pretty awful, too. There were a few in there that weren't too bad, but Osaka wasn't one of them.

Ah, that Turnip Truck comment was great Crawlspace...made me spit out my cerial.
Anyway, I agree with you for the most part of southern accents in dubs. Most of the time, they NEVER get them right. I mean, they did it to Osaka, and they also did it to Ichino in Battle Athletes. I hated how ger voice never seemed to have a constant accent, and would go from normal to southern just like that.
But yeah, don't watch the dub, it's not great, and like she said, it's hard to take characters seriously, when they sound as if they belong on The Beverly Hillbilies instead of anime.

Honestly, can you ever take someone serious when they have a souhthern accent? Living in the south for a while tends to turn you like that, nothing someone says with a strong accent can be trusted, anyways I am off topic. I found the dub to be ok, not great. Shizuru is just god awful terrible, she does sound like Ellie May.
Shizuru in particular. She sounds like Ellie May just off the turnip truck

Why would Shizuru have a southern accent? Did she have a Kansai accent in the series, cause i don't remember....
