I normally cant stand mech shows, but for some reason this series has really grown on me. Im only on episode 21 right now, will hopefully finish the series by tonight, there are some things i am confused on right now, but hopefully the last 5 eps will clear things up.

I never really liked NGE...I dunno why I never got into it. The only other mech anime I can think of that I actually really liked and finished was Gundam 8thMS. I got hooked on RahXephon almost instantly though! I only saw two episodes and it made me want to start collecting the whole series! :)

Just finished the series, have yet to watch the movie. I thought the ending was okay. It was a bit confusing.

I think the series could've done with a lot less of the family tree business (especially since they end up being 'kissing cousins'). Also it seemed that there were so many dramatic deaths in the series. Its good to have a few, but when you get one in just about every other episode, it gets kinda repetitive.

Nothing to confuseing about it He wrote the world to his own tune and set up what made him happy, thus he aged just like he should have and settled down and raised a family The ending for me did not piss me off for being lazy BS like NGE.

I agree with Bernard..The ending in RahXephon was pretty clear to me and it made sense, but with NGE, it was like terrible. The ending was decided by the viewers..eugh what a bad idea. I should've stopped 2 episodes before the last one..it would've made a better ending.."Shinji kills the last angel, the end"

i borrowed it last weekend and watched everything but the movie, it was good, i liked the backstory and the character development, as well as the relationships.

Ah, yea, the end makes sense when you think of it like that. Though i think having a kid with your cousin is kinda gross *shudder*.

The movie definately explained somethings i think i missed out (like why Asahina's blood was red in Tokyo Jupiter but blue in the outside world). I apparently wasnt paying attention too much during the first part of the series.

Remember though that two of them weren't related by blood. Ayato's mom was adopted by the man that raised her and became her father. There is the family connection yes but only in name and a legal sense not a blood sense.

Hmm was she his birth mother in the movie or was that just the TV sereis and in the movie Quon was actually the biological mother gentics wise (dna taken from her) but Ayato's mother is the one that raised and loved him even though she'd was technically his aunt? I can't remember. Man I really need to watch the show again. I am now but not up to the end yet or haven't watched the movie again yet.

The anime at first, did not appeal to me.But after watching it,and actually giving the plot a chance,i found that the anime was much into its own story. Not like the comparson to Neon Genesis, but there a few points "Absolute Terror Field".

But there are comparasons...

Ayato = Shinji
Quan = Rei
Haruka = Misato

What about The Dolems? What is their agenda?

I think RahXephon is better enjoyed when you watch it free of Evangelion comparisons. The two are undeniably similar, but once you accept RahXephon for what it is, I think you'll enjoy it more.

Me? I was particularly attached to the characters, especially Ayato and Haruka. I think Haruka alone carried the show for me, I loved her the best. :)

The Dolems are just the MUs wepons. and how is Haruka Misato? Misato is a drunk and somewhat losse. She trys to be Shinjis mom.

I've watched 'til episode 23 and I love this series. Is great! I like it more than NGE. Specially with the "sound" & "melody" things.
My favorite characters so far are Mishima, Quon and Megumi.
And I kinda hate Ayato, he sometimes acts like Shinji. Despite that, he's not a bad guy.

Is the movie good enough to buy or it'd be better to rent it?

Also I remember that I read one chapter of the manga. Ayato awakes RahXephon in a different way, and If I'm not mistaken; one soldier shoots Reika when she tried to protect Ayato. Am I right??

Krueger
November 7th, 2005, 03:59 PM
A) The movie is an alternate reality of the TV series. It's worth a buy if you loved the TV series, otherwise not even worth a rental.

B) Yeah, that's the manga version as far as the story goes.

I just saw Episode "Blue Friend" i have to say that it did blow me away. That episode was so Neon Genesis Evangelion like,it was rather good.I havent seen the entire series,im basically watching as its put onto tv.I hope Quan and Ayato`s relationship deepens.

This show is nothing like NGE to me. It's a decent show, but I didn't see anything special about it. The impression I get when watching shows like these is that anime is not that good with complex plots. Although I've never watched an anime that I was confused or "stumped" watching, but I think they could beat around the bush alot less and make things more clearer when they explain things in anime.

Well the movie I saw at least was basically the series summed up nice and sweet. It really wasn't anything new, it just was basically a recap of the show, but of course more down to the point. But if you were confused about the series, then it might clear some things up for you.

In episode 14 after ayato shot an arrow at the vermillion did he create a time shift that turn back time. and how many people realized that the real time had been change. bc haruka said 20 mins and Helena said something around 38 mins, was she the only one that realized the right time and what is up with the helmets that the Mu used to control the Dolems

well a few more questions and things that you might have missed. i will put them with a spoiler warning; i don't want to tick some people off:in episode 21 is kim pregnant? i says this bc at the begining she feels sick and we see her coming out of the bathroom. episode 20; Lishiki Makoto show a piece of paper to Haruka(29yr-old one) that says keep me company, does she do it? are the Vermillions dolems? and finally what is up with Sayoko Nanamori's windshield wipers on her car,? they always go off even though it is not raining is it to reflect that she it ticked at something or someone?

I'll try to answer some of the questions. I'm rewatching the series so I'm not up to that point and my memory is a little fuzzy.

Spoilers (Highlight)

1. Kim being pregnant. Not quite sure. Will have to go back and rewatch.

2. Makoto showing the paper to Haruka about keeping him company. My answer is no. It's clear she doesn't like him. We know she's still in love with Ayato. She doesn't even look at the note or at him but just straight ahead. It's as if she isnt' even paying him any attention at all. That could be the cause for his reaction after he tries to give her the note. She's fired after this for drawing a pick of him as a snake I believe or just saying something that pissed him off. This also leads me to think that if she had taken his offer this wouldn't have happen but since she didn't, he was still upset with her and just decided to get rid of her.

Interesting further spoiler that results from this
This actually leads to Haruka's sister finally finding out about about Haruka and Ayato and their connection. She sees an old picture of them with writing on the back.

3. The Vermillions aren't Dolems but weapons created to fight them based off the data that was collected fighting the Dolems. They just happen to be humanoid, similar ot the Rahxephon.

4. Sayoko's car windshield wippers has to do with her not being human but android/machine or whatever it's called. It does have to do with her emotions since it happens when she gets upset. A D I believe or some version of it. That isn't found out until the very end though.

DarkNataku
December 19th, 2005, 07:07 PM
Ok here is another about the Vermillions when all the vermillions start to get destroyed. chaty's vermillion starts to explode or whatever and on elvy's screen it shows D-1 something something. if they aren't then that is what gave me the idea that they were dolems bc that is what appears when a dolem appears don't worry i seen the whole thing and i own it too. just need to buy the movie

Just to add something to this thread this link (http://www.iep.utm.edu/a/aztec.htm) explains the terms like teotl and how the teotle is made of opposite beings both creative and destructive for a god but mediated with justice and morality. Ixtli is only barely mentioned usually coupled with the term ixtli in yóllotl meaning face and heart. It does believe that artistic visions govern creation and destruction. Also Rahxephon is based of of Aztec mythos not Mayan.

One question though why does Kwon always greet people with Ra-Ra?

Well, it's my favourite show, I have all the series and the movie and also the RahXephon bible, Official Illustration Collection and RahXephon Complete guide. I watched it first before I had seen Eva and so didn't compare them. Now, after having watched Evangelion, RahXephon is still way ahead for me.

Anyway, I am good at answering questions (even though english is not my native language, hence all he mistakes :)) so if something in the series is foggy for you, ask away.

Oh, and two mistakes I saw in this thread:

1) RahXephon the Movie - Pluralitas Concentio is NOT a recap of the series. It's an alternative retelling with LOTS of differences and with different ending. It explains alot of things the show doesn't but still, I wouldn't recomend it if you didn't realy love the series.

2) SPOILER!!!

The Vermilions contain Babehm's experiments for creating Dolems. The same way he was trying to creat Olins (all the clones), he wanted to create Dolems too. That's why Mishima calls the Vermilion "a tainted mirror". That is because the Xephon in its pre-yolteotl phase is "a mirror that reflects the truth of one who will tune the world". That means Ayato, when he merges with the Xephon in the end. The giant before that shows what Ayato will become when he reaches Yolteotl, but the Vermilion is not Xephon and it's not even a D1. It is a failed experiment that immitates the Xephon, and so was dubbed "a tainted mirror". Just like the mud dolls in the episode showing Ishiki, Helena and Itsuki's childhood. Btw, Ayato and Itsuki are brothers, in case someone missed that one ;)

End of SPOILER

Could someone please tell me how to mark spoilers the way you people do?

Okay, I have a question... What is the RahXephon OVA? Is it available to get in the US? I remember that Animesuki used to have it on their site, but it's not there anymore. A couple of years ago I downloaded it out of curiosity, but it was before I had seen the series so now I barely remember it. I do remember it was only about 20 minutes long and was pretty wierd (of course, now that I've seen the series, I'd probably understand it more now). Anyone know where I can get it?

Roland
February 6th, 2006, 12:43 AM
Yeah - from a torrent ;) I don't think it's ever been released anywhere (only in Japan). And even though I'm a dedicated Xephon geek, I didn't really get the point in it. So we can safely assume there isn't one but I might just be too dumb to understand it ;)

akpookie

soulreaper

The torrent isn't there anymore because Media Factory is one of the only Japanese studios that tells fansubbers not to sub their work, regardless of its license. I have it, but haven't gotten around to viewing it yet. I don't think it adds any new kind of understanding. It was just a bonus dvd for the RahXephon PS2 game in Japan.

I found an old torrent for Interlude, it has no seeds though right now so who knows if I'll ever finish it.
On a related note, has anyone here played the PS2 game? If so, what's it like? Cool enough to bother importing? (I have a small list of import games I want to get, if the list gets long enough I think I'll buy a Japanese PS2).

Nope, I have the offical thinkpack set. Just my luck that it's on the bootleg. I find that really....kinda funny.

EDIT: Well, I got ahold of Interlude finally. No real earth-shattering revelations, but Itsuki's last line in it made me go Huh? I don't remember any references like this in the series. Itsuki calls Quon "Mother". I thought that was VERY interesting. So perhaps it was worth the trouble of tracking it down. Of course, Quon is my favorite RahXephon character, so that makes it personally worthwhile to me. :P

Wow...this series was so addicting I ended up being hooked upon first sight...that it turned into a marathon viewing for me. there were defnitely some cryptic portions that I wasn't getting until I looked at wikipedia's site and then it all sorta clicked...since I didn't see that Mishima, Reika was Haruka of the past..hair color, length, etc and then I couldn't understand why Quon was fighting/merginging/tuning whatever you want to call it with her own son. I mean did she know that Ayato was her biological child? This series was deep, I guess that is why I got hooked so fast on top of all the intrigue.

Yes, she knew, but it was her role as an Olin - to be the Mu side of the Tuning. Besides, the RahXephon's "battle" in the end was more like lovemaking, it didn't involve hatred or desire for killing. Also, the Tuning would set everything right for either of them (as it did for Ayato when he won and converted the world to the human side), so she could do whatever it took before that.

I politely disagree. I mean, Quon was Ayato's mother -- lovemaking sounds a little incestual, which is/was never the point of the show.

I saw Quon as a necessity -- like you said, as Olin -- it is to provide Duality. However, in the end she does say that Ayato is the one who is able to overcome whatever in order to tune the world.

So in effect, she is acting from duty -- but she is also hoping for Ayato to tune the world.

And how things turned out to be the way they were at the end.. + the final scene...

Ayato became God (or something greater) and remade reality so that there were no Mulians or Dolems or Rahxephon so that he and Haruka could live their lives as they should.

The Coda scene is a flashback to the day he met Haruka. The painting and Reika were subconscious expressions of his true memory which had been supressed by Maya in Tokyo Jupiter.

Right at the end it says, "and the two met each other" (After the last scen when he was painting)...... that confuses me when I think about the piano scene at that school which was 2min before that, because Ayato says, this is when I met you.... can you explain that to me?

That last scene at the beach is when they met each other, while the scene in the school where they kissed was the start of their relationship.

Roland

It seems we can't. a matter of honor for some people I guess...

Anyway, Ayato didn't siomply "erase" Mulians from reality, he *merged* both our and Mu's world to create a new united reality. We don't really see the blood-color of this new world but since in the end he was in terms with himself and represented the human side of the conflict (while Quon represented the Mu one) it's safely to assume the new reality converted Mu into humans. For example we see that he granted Mamoru (who was, in the unrevised reality, a Mulian) his greatest wish and coupled him with Hiroko.

Thought I'd revive the old thread after so much heated discussion over Evangelion.

Anyway, how different would you think the series have been if Itsuki and Quon were the Ollins, rather than Ayato and Quon? Although I don't think the show would have been as good, I would have loved to see Itsuki's full potential as an Instrumentalist of Xephon.

But his potential was flawed, wasn't it? That's why he WASN'T an Ollin ;)

I know, that's why the show just wouldn't be good enough.

Here is a question about quon, was she turned into Ayato's child in the end? Because I remember him calling her Quon and the infant does have pink hair. I guess that represents the merging of the Mulians and humans. Also is Haruka the girl that found Ayato when he escaped Tokyo? I couldn't remember that girls name, or is she that girl he was chasing after while he was stuck in Jupitar Tokyo.

1: Yes, it appears so.
2: Haruka is the grown-up intelligence agent who leaves Tokyo Jupiter with Ayato. The girl he meets in a yellow dress inside Tokyo is Reika, really Ixtli, the RahXephon's soul which has taken the image of a younger Haruka.

Check out Krueger's RahXephon site (http://www.kenoki.com/nko/spoilerwarning.html) for example.

Something that bugged me:
The side bit about Itsuki Kisaragi being Ayato's brother. Seems to me that it was touched upon briefly, and at the end we see the older Ayato looking very similar to Itsuki, but there was never any closure on the point. When did Ayato have a brother? Twin? Half-Brother? I could understand if the Mu erased that part of his memory as well but it just left me wondering. Did I miss something, or did I completely misunderstand the angle? They share the mark but Ayato was chosen by RahXephon...

They're twin brothers, with Ayato being born first by a few minutes I think. That's why Itsuki calls Ayato his older brother. I have no idea who gave birth to them. The OVA appears to show Quon holding two babies, but that vision might not have been real. It could have been a surrogate mother.

All we know is that they are twin brothers, with Quon being the genetic mother and Watarai the genetic father; that Maya did not give birth to them, and that Ayato was raised by Maya while Itsuki was raised by Bähbem.

Ayato did not remember anything about Itsuki because they were separated at birth. When Itsuki was little, he didn't know about Ayato either. He probably found out later in life - it would be pretty devastating if he had to find out through his relationship with Haruka.

There is actually a book of novellas - pre-quels if you like - about some of the characters, and one of them is about Itsuki. It's in Japanese only though. Perhaps we'd learn more about Itsuki's relationship with Ayato there.

The novels that have been translated to English - re-telling the TV series - also contain more inner thoughts that might reveal this, but I'm afraid I haven't read the novels.

I would like to know some of the reasons behind Ayato's choice for the world he created. Like why did he decide to have Quon turn into an infant? I understand why he ends up with Haruka, he always loved her. It's mostly the Quon turned into infant thing that has me perplexed. Way didn't he just let the people stay in their current forms and transfer them into his new reality?

I have a question about the last episode. I don't have the series on hand so I can't get the exact quote but when they're at the subway station I think Quon says to Ayato something like "You never learned to accept others" or something like that. What exactly does she say and what is she talking about?

Because it was cute? ^_^ Presumably, it was a way that Quon could be with Itsuki and Ayato in some other way than in the previous story, but I don't know how Sayoko factors into that.

Perhaps Itsuki becomes Quon's little brother, and then Itsuki marries Sayoko? That would give him the maximum amount of time with both of them.

What exactly does she say and what is she talking about?
I don't have the series at hand either, and I don't quite remember what was in question. If I remember correctly it was about stuff like being accepted as a Redlood/Blueblood mix and so on, but I'll keep an eye out for it the next time I re-watch it. (Been busy lately.)

He would have turned quon into an infant because he loved her he alos loved haruka but not in the same way it ment ayato could have the two loves of his life and saved himself a heart wrenching decison ayato tuned himself into itski's image because that was the only clue as to what he would have looked like if he had grown up in the same time stream as haruka. he left haruka the way she was because it was the way he remembered her when he first realised he loved her to that extent. another intereating point is that he chose to allow his enimies to ive i suppose that shows his kind hearted and gentle side

Shes probably referring to the fact that Ayato just never let anyone in. He was afraid of being with people, he thought that they would dislike him because of what he was. Also he was rather untrusting of others. Especially when he thought everyone knew he was a mulian but didn't tell him. I think Souichi talks about this in the episode when Ayato leaves for Tokyo Jupiter.

This was a really strange anime for me. Maybe I need to watch it again, but a lot of it I really had trouble following. It seemed to jump around way too much...and what was with his mom? Was that his mom? It's been at least a year.

Yeah, this anime might not need a full re-watch (that's a fun bonus), but it is certainly an advantage to be able to pause some scenes and re-watch them while you're watching the series for the first time.
In the TV series (the original), Maya is his aunt and adoptive mother, while Quon is his genetic mother.

My interpretation of this was that once Ayato had merged completely with the Rahxephon and achieved Yeoteotl, he defeated Quon(thus expelling the disharmonic noise) and tuned the world. In essence he reset time and thus recreated the world where the Mu and human worlds never separated. Everything else from that point on just happened by chance(fate maybe?).

Yup, unlike many other series, Xephon explains everything if one is careful enough to get it.

This is part of why I really enjoy the series. If you pay attention to what is actually being said by the characters then you can pretty much understand what is going on and there really shouldn't be any serious questions. Some things are implied though but if you are paying attention those are answerable as well. Repeat viewings usually allows one to pick on those things I think. The show doesn't actually leave many if anything hanging or unexplainable.

Well, except for how to build a Xephon system yourself. :)

It's so great to re-watch it. I slapped my palm into my forehead and laughed more than once at the subtle hints.

I don't want to say too much about the manga's, but read them with an open mind and don't expect the very same story as the anime. A similar series called "Gunparade March" (the anime) is completely different forms its 3 manga predecessor. The manga and anime are completely different.
