Already familiar with her work on Macross Plus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Cowboy Bebop, last night I picked up a few more soundtracks on a whim. The first ones I listened to were the two OSTs for Earth Girl Arjuna.
I may be preaching to the choir here but this woman is a genius. I have never seen a composer with such a deep understanding of so many different types of music. From the orchestral, almost Danny Elfman-like grandeur of "Asura Jittaika" to the wonderful jig of "Before Breakfast"... it's just masterpiece after masterpiece. There is literally nothing she can't do.
I've been seized by a desire to pick up everything she's written. All the OSTs are reasonably easy to get but more obscure releases like "Song to Fly" or her video game music are more difficult to find.

But you made a great choice with Arjuna!... There are so many great tracks: Chloe, Mameshiba, Enka, Omega Blue, Earth Resonance, Diamond, (I love "Asura Jittaika" as well), I could just go on and on...
All this Yoko Kanno talk makes me want the Turn-A Gundam Movie OST, Koei Music Works, and Uncharted Waters II OST even more... :crybaby:

Have you listened to her music for Wolf's Rain as well? That's the music I first heard from Yoko Kanno (and what first got me hooked :P). It's very beautiful. (It fits the series so well, IMO. :))
Her music for GitS: SAC and Cowboy Bebop is beautiful. (Still have to buy the Earth Girl Arjuna soundtracks, though...>_<) Actually...I still have to listen to most of her music. :P

First: Please, PLEASE change the color of your text. It's hard to read and annoying as hell.
Second: Don't resurrect threads this old. Let them die in peace.
And yes, Yoko Kanno did compose the music for Bebop.

My most favourite Yoko Kanno Brain Powerd tracks ("In My Dream" is composed by Eri Shingyoji"):
1. "Ark" - my absolute favourite, can't get enough of this song (tune inspired by Gioseppe Giordani's "Caro Mio Ben")
2. "Light Of Love" - the second half of the track is the best... First half is great too of course...
3. "Transmission" - The most Hitchcockian track Kanno composed--I'm a big fan of Hitchcock (I own 20 films on DVD by him)...
4. "Power Of Light" - So varied, so neatly done...
5. "Sonne" - I CAN't BELIEVE A GUY IS SINGING THIS!!!!
And a lot more ("True Love," "Walk By Myself," "Departure"), but enough with lists... :D

well I would have to say that Yuki Kajiura is my fav Japanese Composer...
2nd would be Nobuo Uematsu (known for Final Fantasy music) and 3rd would be Yoko Kanno..
but all three are incredible composers :)

Yoko Kanno and Nobue Uematsu are definitely awesome! composers, and are included in my favs, but I would have to say that Tenpei Sato ranks up there as well on my list.

My favorite composer is Taku Iwasaki. His Kenshin and Read or Die work completely floor me. I like Kanno quite a bit as well, but I'm more into her stuff with Maaya Sakamoto then her straight up instrumental music.
Btw the title for this thread looks awful from the main forum index.
OT I love Origa and look forward to her new single from the new GITS movie ^__^

i didn't think the kenshin music was that good..
for me, its yuki or yoko. no other composer comes close to what these two have done. (i'm not considering Nobuo because he doesn't do anime music)

I'd actually disagree, as much as I love Yoko Kanno I prefer Yuki Kajiura more.

Diddn't he work a little on Ah! My Goddess OVA &/or movie?
I remember on Icons that was about Nobuo and they mention that he worked on the anime.

i didn't think the kenshin music was that good..
Taku Iwasaki didnt do all of it. (maybe just the OVA) The series is huge so there were lots of composers, including Taro Iwashiro (has some awesome pieces). I like Iwasaki's Read or Die stuff alot better than his Kenshin stuff, but his Kenshin work fit the OVAs quite well. "Sound of snow falling", "Quiet Life", and "Wars of the Last Wolves" are incredible pieces.

Ah! My Goddess: The Movie : Music
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) : Music Composition
Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals (OAV) : Production Supervision
Final Fantasy: Unlimited (TV) : Theme Music
he did some anime stuff...

I like the Kenshin TV music more, durring the Kyoto Arc that is. First season I diddn't like the music much but the second season changed to this really cool dark toned music that really helped the mood of the dark Kyoto Arc.

Off-topic, but does anybody know the title of the music being played during the Kenshin vs. Shishio fight?... I remember two themes, the really dramatic one where the spectators shouts a lot on what moves they were doing and such; the other starts when we see Shishio's foot slip forward (sounds kinda Oriental/Middle-Eastern hybrid)... Those were both great tracks...

OAV yes, but the regular series no..
he only did 1 song for the A!MG movie iirc.. and the FFVIIAC soundtrack was just FFVII rehashed... (not that i'm complaining)

The Ragnarok 3D trailer has some of Kanno in it, and the intro to Ghost in the Shell SSS is already out. Both with great music in them :)

BTW, I don't think there's anything wrong with resurrecting really old threads if they are still relevant. Sure Kanno took about one year off, but she's still relevant in the community ;) If not for her, my musical tastes would not be this diverse. In fact, she's the only artist who has held my attention eversince I first heard her works. Every album is a different experience!

Hah... I knew that loooooooong ago... Laurent Voulzy's "Une Heroine" is a fantastic song... Yoko Kanno's version, "Cloud 9" is almost (about 90%) the same song as "Une Heroine" but with some improvements... My biggest complaint is that no credit is given where it is due... I dunno who to blame, but that's the way it goes...
BTW, most of the songs listed on that list aren't direct copies of the songs... Most of them are merely suggested by the forum members to what they sound like... Because "Ladies And Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space" has got nothing--Nothing--against "Be Human"... Similar style, yes, inspired by maybe, but the tune is so, so, so different...
And I dunno about the "crew" they are talking about... I can't begin to contemplate if Kanno had a "crew" since she started composing music since the late eighties...

Ahaha, I've also seen your sources before :D If you read through the original thread which was actually made by fans themselves, there were too many of them which only had minute similarities with the alleged copies, but were still mentioned by the fans. I was one of those posters. Obviously, the poster in fiction junction was trying to look for the worst case scenario - Anything to debunk Kajiura's rival :P

Well, the thing with Kajiura is that she likes to play it safe with her stuff... Thus, she mostly utilizes the same instruments throughout... Some will say it's her style, and they most likely be right... Kanno, on the other hand, incorporates a challenge (demanding that she is NOT a group of people) by floating through different styles...
