What are the best manga classics?
The only manga I could think that would makes a classic are Rurouni Kenshin, Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lupin, Dragon Ball and Card Captor Sakura.

My votes go for Rurouni Kenshin and Cardcaptor Sakura!!! :P
Other than that...Aren't most of CLAMP's series classics? To me, most of them are.
To me, Sailor Moon is classic, too...Maison Ikkoku is as well. :)
I would like it if Fruits Basket were a classic...but it's too new to be considered a classic. :P

hm... classics. here are some i will agree with and then some i'll add.
Rurouni Kenshin (i've only read parts)
Ranma 1/2 (i've only read parts)
Card Captor Sakura
Fushigi Yuugi (only read a couple parts)
Maison Ikkoku
Video Girl AI might be considered classic (only read a bit)
i would imagine that Akira would be considered classic. Nausicaa as well most likely. i haven't read either though, can't say for sure.
i've got a couple others that i might include, but i don't know that they're aged enough to be considered "classic"

I forgot about Fushigi Yuugi...How could I forget that one? :( (I didn't think most shojo series would count, though...)
I agree about Nausicaa and Ranma 1/2. (I haven't read any of Akira, though...) Video Girl Ai could also be considered a classic.

Though I'm not entirely sure what connotes a classic exactly, I'm going to hope this counts and just go with Berserk ^_^

Evangelion manga, a classic? What?
Undrave, you win silver for mentioning Leiji Mastumoto, but I'm sad that no one has even mentioned the god of manga himself (and that's primarily according to the people of Japan, not just me,) the most important single individual in the history of both anime and manga, Osamu Tezuka.

Check your references, Nanairo Inko IS by Osamu Tezuka hehehehehe :D
I guess I can mention Tetsuwan Atom Astro Boy but I never read the manga itself.

I guess also Cyborg 009 would be considered a classic. It's one of my favorite classics.

I think just about anything by Osamu Tezuka would be considered a classic, just because he is the God of Manga.
Ranma 1/2 is, without a doubt, a classic slapstick comedy. Maison Ikkoku should very darn well be considered a classic, if it isn't already.
Rurouni Kenshin will probably be, if it isn't already, considered a classic.
Although I have never read it myself, I have a feeling that Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind is considered somewhat of a classic because of its author, Hayao Miyazaki, and because of its movie counterpart.

I highly believe Fushigi Yuugi will go down as one of the best shoujo romance classics in manga ever made. Yuu Watase's story was truly romantic, and it was one of the most popular series ever released. I know it touched my heart, and I'm sured it touched many others too. It was thanks to the success of FY that she created sequals to it such as FY Gaiden, and now FY Genbu Kaiden. I'm sure it will always stand out as one of the best romance anime for years to come.
I also think Sailor Moon will go down as one of the best shoujo magical-girl classics ever made. Even today, it stands out in the magical-girl genre, and it's because of its excellent storyline, character development, and so many memorable moments that made this series great. I really thought Sailor Moon was a huge part of getting many people into the anime/manga fandom back in the 90's, and it certainly made a huge impact on the industry in general.

Really... Some people have some interesting opinions of some titles. There is no way a title like Fushigi Yugi, for example, is a classic. It's just one of many, many, many very similar shoujo titles.
Classics would probably include titles like "Akira", "Blade of the Immortal", "Dragon Ball", "Berserk", and maybe a couple more. I would also agree that Lupin is a classic.

Hmm, Id have to say a lot of the stuff by CLAMP and even though Ive only read portions of it, Ghost In The Shell was good.
How many volumes is Fushigi Yuugi. I hear a lot of praise for it, and Im looking for something a little different than what I normally read.

the short answer to the Fushigi Yuugi question is 18 volumes. the long answer is that you can check out this thread for a bit more useful info from Yuri-chan.

]
CBG, Evangelion qalifies as a classic because of its controversity on religion as well as its complex concepts/plots.

Rurouni Kenshin
Yu Yu Hakusho
Fushigi Yuugi
Ceres: Celestial Legend
Red River (the classic that no one else has read...)
Flame of Recca(I think it's a classic...)
Full Moon wo Sagoshite (I've only read the first two volumes, but it's already a classic in my eyes)
Current series that will likely become 'classics' in the future:
Fruits basket
Bleach

It's 18 volumes, but the main story ends in volume 13. Volume 14+ is a new story arc, and isn't as good as it is a forced continuation. Yuu Watase states in one of her sidebar blurbs in vol. 14 that she wrote it because people kept begging for more. It's not bad, but it lacks the magic and charm of the main story.

That's true, the events that took place in the TV series actually ended on vol. 13 on chapter 77. Something worth noting here was that vol. 14 on chapter 78 pretty much continued where vol. 13 left off, but these scenes didn't appear in the second OVA. It's best to say that the OVA started differently than the manga.

Errm, no. As others have said numerous times before, Evangelion didn't do anything that hasn't been done before, and the Eva manga is merely based on the anime. Religious stuff is just a gimmick in Eva, as anyone will tell you. The Eva manga isn't even an original work, so it's just ludicrous to compare it to the likes of true legends Osamu Tezuka and Leiji Matsumoto.

When you compare it to stuff like "Monster", no way. It's good, but there are way better mystery/suspense manga out there

Exactly. Naruto? Bleach? Come on guys... not classics by any standard definition. And they probably won't be. But, I digress.

Just a personal definition, but to me a 'classic' is something that defines or refines a genre or sub-genre. They are the works people most commonly compare the new stuff to, or the ones most commonly recommended to newbies who got interested because of the current Popular lineup.
Naruto is what gets the new kid interested in manga, but it's not a classic. To me, the classics are things like Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon (tho I hate it with a passion, it's still the defining Magical Girl story,) and Robotoech (which may be my own ignorance, but it and Gundam are the first things I think of when someone says mecha.)

Everything by Osamu Tezuka is classic; he's known in Japan as the God of Manga.
I'd say that here in the States Ranma 1/2 is a classic too.

I'd say that here in the States Ranma 1/2 is a classic too.I think a lot of Takahashi Rumiko's series are considered classics, both in the States and in Japan. Ranma 1/2 is a, if not the, classic slapstick comedy. Maison Ikkoku is a romantic comedy classic. Urusei Yatsura is a classic. I think there's a good reason Takahashi is known as the "Queen of Manga" or "Princess of Manga." :)

Well, she did pretty much single-handedly invent the harem genre.
