Since a lot of us watch other Tomino series such as Overman King Gainer or Heavy Metal L-Gaim but there is not a seperate forum for his work and any post in the general forum tend to be killed off quickly as most fans do not like older series -_-;.

With this situation I have decided to put a sticky for discussion of his other series. This is a short list of his of other series

Wandering Sun
Star of the Seine
Zambot 3
Reideen the Brave
Space Runway Ideon
Aura Battler Dunbine
Heavy Metal L-Gaim
Brain Powered
Garzey's Wing
Overman King Gainer

You know I have several model kits from L-Gaim but have never seen the series I have watched and own Aura Battler Dunbine but cannot find any of the moodel kits. I am just curious outside of myself and Levon whose seen Dunbine and what was your impression of it?

I have watched and own Aura Battler Dunbine but cannot find any of the moodel kits.

I have the Dunbine Master Grade^_^ The site I got it from doesn't sell it anymore, I must have got the last one. The model seems pretty rare.

Those MG Dunbine model's are rather hard to find online or off.

I only have a little Tohawk Dunbine HG kit.

From what I watched of A.B. Dunbine I enjoyed it over all. Some of the imagery reminded me somewhat of the old Hanna Barbera Sword & Sorcery show's and insect theme cartoon's from the late 70's early 80's, only on a much grander scale.

While I did enjoy the first portion of the show once the story started moving to upper earth things started to seem a bit... aimless? As if they were not sure what direction they wanted the show to go in, but maybe it was just me.

Levon
August 25th, 2005, 09:05 PM
I admit it went a little downhill for me when they went to upper earth. I wish it would have just stayed in Byston Well.

I've seen up through vol. 7 when Show gets the Billbine. I love the show but I spoiled the ending for myself. So I've gone ahead and finished other series. One of these days I'll finish the show.

I was never a big fan of Dunbine, but I don't think it's bad. It never really "clicked" for me, I guess.

Dunbine I felt was great. The only thing I wasn't pleased with was how my favorite character Keen pretty much got the shaft. I guess I could concede your point about the plot kinda wandering after they get on upper earth, but I was still glued to my seat regardless.

I'v seen the first 14 episodes of Overman King Gainer. I'm really liking it but I have to say this is the most light anime by Tomino that I'v seen. Its not dark & gritty with people dieing & going through pain with lots of crying & such. Its pretty happy, I don't know if this will change later in the show(like ZZ Gundam did) or not.

Techrobo

Seen all of Dunbine. The models are easy enough to find if you have a Hobby Japan subscription, but your going to pay an arm and a leg to get them over here.

I think Tomino is genuinely happier now because Turn A is the same way.

A bit more on topic I was wondering why so many people hate Brain Powered? While not the greatest series I have ever seen it was not the MD Giest of mecha so many people seem to say it is.

CBMC
August 29th, 2005, 10:27 AM
I want to see Brain Powered, but so far it only being half dubbed is a great deterement. I'm sure that has something to do with it not catching on as much after it was done being released.

Levon
August 29th, 2005, 11:39 AM
What do you mean half dubbed? Its all dubbed I believe. I'm confused-_-;

I havn't seen all of Brain Powered, I really should watch it all.

Bandai pulled a nazi moved and stopped dubbing it after they felt the sales weren't good enough.

Levon
August 29th, 2005, 12:04 PM
Really? Thats a big turn off for me. On the last volume it says it has the English audio I think....

I'm glad ADV isn't like that & choose to stop dubbing Dunbine since that wasn't selling well. I believe it was around volume 4 or so when ADV lowered the retail price & then had that buy one get one free thing. Dunbine did not do that good sadly, I ended up buying the rest of the show at ADV's site for like $5 a DVD-_-;

I blame it on the fact it is an older series, remember what happend to MSG when it premiered on Cartoon Network.

Has L Gaim ever been released state side I have seen one of the OVA's and want to see the original series.

...which is quite unfortunate. In my mind L-Gaim's head and shoulders above Dunbine, which got a US release (not that Dunbine is bad, outside of the horrible pacing in the latter half). Oh well. I've always got my crappy old VHS copies :P

Nah, I'm going to have to disagree and say its definantly an eventuality. After Bandai exhausts its Gundam catalogue, they will go back and release other mecha anime.

It could take a while to exhaust the Gundam catalogue, as ZZ, Victory, X ad Turn A hevnt been announced and with there being a new Gundam almost every year to two years, that may take a while, but who knows.

I started watching Ideon and L-Gaim for the first time cause they were
mentioned in this thread...I had heard of L-Gaim...but not Ideon.

Thanks for this thread and mentioning other series Tomino has worked on.

I was just thinking tho, with Dunbine and L-Gaim...what's the deal with the tinkerbell fairies?

And Cosmo from Ideon to me looks like Amuro with a fro :)

If you didn't see it on AN's news page:

Wings Of Rean Anime Announced
The November 2005 issue of Gundam Ace Magazine reports that Yoshiyuki Tomino's Wings Of Rean novels will be adapted as an anime series by Sunrise Studios. The Wings of Rean anime will debut this December.

Tomino's Wings of Rean novels are the source for the 1983 Aura Battler Dunbine anime series.

Wonder if he will direct...

At a certain other website I can pick up the entire Brain Power'd series for around $40. Does it have any redeeming qualities that would warrant a purchase?

EDIT: Ideon beats the pants off all of Tomino's other non-Gundam works.

I personally think Ideon is better than Gundam (Blasphemy, I know). I have never seen Brain Powered, but from what I have heard, it is very similar to Evangelion, just a thousand times more confusing (one of my friends said she had to rewatch it several times). I guess if you liked Evangelion, it would be ok... (or you could wait for some other person's opinion...)

From Gunota Headlines (http://aeug.blogspot.com/):

Sunrise pre-opened the official site for The Wings of Rean. It mentions the anime will not be based on the novel Tomino wrote 20 years ago. It will be about a love & adventure story between Asap Suzuki and Luxe Sakomizu. The Aura Battler battle scenes will be a highlight. It also says this will be the last installment of the Byston Well series. The anime will be available via Bandai Channel net stream. The site fully opens on October 26th.

I finished rewatching Dunbone earlier today and does anyone else notice Tomino uses the same archtypes for characters. For example Bern Bunnings comes to mind with Asuham Boone. The aparently soft and Malliable Drake Luft turns out to be fatalisitic and not such a wuss kinda like Kidz Munt.

Also does anyone know were Tomino gets his crazy names from, he is the master of odd ball names more so than George Lucas.

Tomino said in an interview that he likes weird names, I have no idea where he comes up with them. What kind of name for a human is Seabook or Shot Weapon?

Someone once said that he simply rolls a dice with katakana on it and uses the random syllables to form his names. Has anyone in anime history ever used such bizarre names?
Dunbine: Shot Weapon, Musiy Por, Garalia Nyamhee, Burn Bunnings, Jerryl Kuchibi, Bishot Hate, Louser Luft, Riml Luft, Jacoba Aon
Ideon: Abadede Gurimade, Damido Pechi, Guhaba Geba, Doku Jilbal, Galbabra Gra, Guldabra Dron, Rukuku Kil, Kulara Kina, Daram Zuba, Deck Afta, Ashura Novak, Rapoh Famu
L-Gaim: Quwasan Olibee, Maph McTomin, Kyao Mirao, Mian Ku Haw Aschter, Amandara Kamandara, Baan Gania Killas, Sai Quo Addar, Preitza Quoze,

In hindsight the Gundam names aren't that bad! :P

MagicianCamille

Tomino recycles characters he likes so yes he does look like Bello. Chaum shows up in L Gaim because Tomino liked her so much.

Hmm.. that's an intersting question..

I'd always assumed that it had been the trend before his time and was forced upon him and that he falls into it out of habit in his newer series (Brain Powerd, etc.)

Actually, I thought that the first episode (which I watched the fansub of) was an excellent, heavily-concentrated example of that unique "Tomino-ness" that people like to talk about (not including his former tendency towards the tragic), though a bit "rough-around-the-edges" like most Tomino shows are.

I'd buy it if the price wasn't as crazy as it is.. I'm tempted to buy it anyway, but I know better..
