View Full Version : Your thoughts on Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden

I recently got the manga of FY Genbu Kaiden. I thought it was amazing. Just the thought of actually reading something new from a series I consider my all-time favorite. I have to say that it was so thrilling to read.
For those who are new to FY and interested in this story, here's a little background for you. This new series takes place 80 years in 1925 before the Fushigi Yuugi Suzaku/Seiyru arc (which took place in modern times) from when the first priestess entered the book of the Universe of the Four Gods. This mysterious magical spell book was created by Einosuke Okuda. One day when his daughter Takiko Okuda confronted him that he has been drifting away from the family. She wasn't happy about what his father was doing, so she attempted to destroy the book he created, but instead, she mysteriously entered the book. After arriving to a snowy moutainous landscape, she meet one of the celestial warriors. Being from another world, she became destined to become a priestess by finding the seven celestial warriors. Even a younger Suzuno future Priestess of Byakko appeared in this story too. It looks like it's going to an exciting series yet again.
Yuu Watase was thrilled she could work in this series 7 years after she did the first 18 volumes of the first FY series. Thanks to us fans who wanted to read about Genbu and Byyako, Yuu Watase responded, and she has created this just for us. She has always dreamed about wanting to write about Genbu Kaiden and the Byyako story for years. There was never a year she didn't draw something new to FY. After so many years, she has succeeded in creating this story.
I thought it was great, and as Yuu Watase has matured over these years, it looks this story seems to be alot more mature too. It felt so different from the first FY series but so alike at the same time too. There might be parts that are very different but that's to be expected because the characters and time period are different from the first series. I'm excited with this story, and I can't wait to read the second volume when it gets released in November. I'm looking forward to seeing Takiko's character grow as well as the new Genbu celestial warriors, possibly more of little Suzuno too. I have such high hopes for this series, and so far it has been great!!

I like FY Genbu Kaiden too. :) I'm so glad Yuu Watase decided to write more of the story, and it's refreshing to see a new caste of characters and learn about the history of the FY world. It'll be interesting to see if Genbu Kaiden sticks to the original tragic ending of the Genbu story and how things develop into that.

I read some translations od the first few chapters. I love that celestial warrior who turns from a woman to a man? What's the name again?

I believe his name was Limdo, a windmaster of the Genbu seven. He/she has a chinese character standing for "woman". Limdo can not only summon the wind as one of his special powers, but he can also transform into a woman. This character is alot like Ranma in a way.
I would love to see the way the Genbu arc ends too. So much could be talked about the books origins and both Einosuke and Takiko Okuda. Maybe we could see hints of the Byyako story unfold, and possibly more on Suzaku and Seiryu we haven't seen before. Miaka and Yui both traveled to Hokkan and Sairou in the first series, maybe we can see Takiko travel to Konan and Kutou too. ^_^

I thought his name was Rimoudo... At least that's what the translations I've been reading say..
Frankly, I too am very interested in the Genbu arc. It's seems to open a lot of new doors to discussion about Takiko and her seishi are so cool --> Rimoudo. I can't wait to read the rest! ^_^

His northern Chinese constellation name is Uruki, seishi symbol standing for "Woman". It's wierd, I understood it as Limdo because that's what he was named in VIZ's translation of the manga, but that could be wrong!! It could be Limdo, it could be Rimoudo like you and most others would say, or it could just be Uruki as in his original name. ^_^

Basically, I'm just talking about the manga VIZ recently released here in the US. It was licensed, translated, and already released in stores. Vol. 1 of FY Genbu Kaiden recently came out just last July, and vol. 2 is set to be released later this year. If you haven't gotten it yet, you can already find this at stores. ^_^

I like it so far...it's one of my current favorites of hers. I sort of like this better than Fushigi Yugi.
Takiko is so adorable and I think a more likable heroine than Miaka(*hides from Yuri). Plus I love those type of outfits(sue me..I don't know what they're called..hakama?) becaues I think they're so pretty.
I have no opinion on Uruki/Rimbo yet...other than h/she's hot. I like the other warrior(the one who appeared in FY briefly) better.
Now, if only Appare Jinpu was licensed...

Now there's no need to hide, I know how you feel about Miaka. ^_^ I also thought Takiko seemed really cool. I loved her personality, and I also loved her clothing. I have always thought traditional Chinese style clothing in general was so pretty too. One of the aspects I've loved about FY, and Genbu Kaiden continues with it.

I just read the first volume of Genbu Kaiden last night; and I thought it was wonderful! (I can’t wait until the next volume!) Fushigi Yuugi is my personal favorite anime/manga; so I was so excited to have another story within the world of Fushigi Yuugi.
I think Takiko is a really neat character (plus I really like her personality and she’s so beautiful.) Limdo is also a awesome character too.

I also think Yuu Watase has matured a lot and Genbu Kaiden is also more of a mature series as well. I also feel the same about reading Genbu Kaiden its Fushigi Yuugi but it’s different in some aspects but the same in others. (Plus I really hope someday they will make it into an anime.) ;)

I don't see why she wouldn't create a Byakko arc. Genbu Kaiden's such a big hit (totally deserves to be a hit too because it's awesome) and it's only a matter of time before she gets to working on Byakko no Miko's story... It'd almost be ridiculous not to. ^^
Yeh, Genbu Kaiden is a lot more mature and dark in nature, especially because the readers already know what's in store for Taki-chan. There aren't as many slapstick/comedy moments and everyone is much more solemn and "duty-oriented" than say, the Suzaku 7sei. Rimudo and Takiko's love story is very poignant and beautiful because of the way it was handled--they know that they love each other but they also know that they have duties to fulfill.

To be honest, I have a feeling she's indirectly giving us signs that Byyako's story will be told too. As we know, she's currently doing Genbu's story, she's already done Suzaku's and Seiryu's stories too. Now only Byyako's story is left. With Suzuno's timeline as being Byyako no Miko taking place right after Takiko's story, I wouldn't think it would be difficult to do.
Byyako no Miko In the original FY series, there were some brief scenes of Suzuno's love for Tatara, and Tokaki and Subaru of the Byyako seven made an appearence too. It is explained that Einosuke Okuda (Genbu no Miko's father) was a close friend of Suzuno's father, Oosugi Takago, and upon Takiko's death, intrusted the book to him as it could not be destroyed. It was this way that Suzuno found the book and entered it as Byyako no Miko. Due to Suzuno's strong sense of will, she was not devoured by the beast god after summoning Byyako, just like Miaka when she summoned Suzaku. Upon her death, she is reunited with her love Tatara who was one of her seishi in the Universe of the Four Gods.
I think alot more could be said about Byyako no Miko's story and her seishi's fates. Unlike Genbu's story, this one could be alot more romantic just like the original FY story was. In the future, I sure hope Yuu Watase considers such a story like this. It would truly close out the FY series in such a big way. ^_^

About the part where Suzuno and Tatara are reunited in death, that part was only in the anime. However, Watase-sensei apparently said that she thought it was brilliant, what the anime did, and wished she'd thought of that first. XD I wouldn't be surprised if she executed something like that in the Byakko Gaiden...

Lets keep in mind that Genbu's story is supposed to be tragic because it was told that she was killed by her father and then himself in the original Fushigi Yuugi. Hikitsu and Tomite were known to have died, and their spirits lived on to the very end to protect Takiko's Shinzaho which was created after she summoned Genbu.
Now that I think about it, on September 1, 1923, an Earthquake marking 7.9 (or possibly higher) on the Richter Scale terrorized Tokyo. It was reported over 90,000 people died as a result of the quake, and even more were injured. It was extremely powerful. So what does this have to do with Fushigi Yuugi?!? The year Einosuke Okuda killed his daughter was 1923 too!! Maybe Okuda Einosuke killed his daughter to prevent Genbu from coming over to the real world, because he knew it would be disasterous. With Genbu's inside his daughter, it would set off a large power surge which would cause the Earthquake!! That's not entirely impossible is it. I'm just supposing here, but this story might take this direction. ;) My crazy imagination. :P

Rimudo x Takiko is worlds above Tama x Miaka in terms of just about everything (as a couple).
Rimudo's driven a lot more by his head rather than his... other head, this may change later (which god I hope it doesn't because I can't take a Tama x Miaka clone in Genbu Kaiden which at the moment is doing so well in my book).

I agree FY Genbu Kaiden is turning out to be very interesting, but I'm not going to compare this to the original series yet until I read the entire story of Genbu Kaiden. As much as I'm liking this new story so far, my heart remains with the original FY too as I thought both Suzaku and Seiryu's tale in the Universe of the Four Gods world were legendary; at least the TV series. ^_^ I really hope FY Genbu Kaiden gets animated.

That's exactly what I stated in one of my earlier posts in this thread!! Genbu no Miko's story is supposed end tragic, and we seem to already see early signs of that by the end of the second volume of the manga. Takiko seemed strong willed, I'm not sure in what circumstances she will lose out to the beast god. The story has turned more serious, and it seems like everyone is out for Takiko's life too. All we can do now is continue reading until the next volume. ;)

If I remember correctly...Didn't Yuu Watase say in volume 1 of FY: GK that she was surprised about what she wrote for Genbu Kaiden's story in the original FY? She also said she might change some things around or something like that so even readers of the original would be surprised...I'm hoping for a happy ending somewhere...even though it seems unlikely. :P
I'm hoping there will be a Byakko Kaiden as well, since I'm interested to see who those warriors were. ^_^ (I'm still wondering who the rest of the warriors will be in Genbu Kaiden!)

It would be nice if Yuu Watase "surprised" us with something here. It would just make reading this series that much more interesting, and even make the Genbu Kaiden storyline that much more different from the original story. I think it's awesome you've actually read more of this series. I wish I could too, but I'll stick to reading the English translation of them. I wonder if we'll actually see connections between this and the original story. Knowing this takes place in the past, I'm sure we can possibly see how Kutou became so corrupted, or how Konan became so prosperous. We can possibly see things like that could possibly expand the evolution as to why both didn't get along very much in the original story.
As far as Byakko story is concerned, the warriors of the Byakko seven were Tatara, Tokaki, Subaru, Kokie, Ameturi, Karasuki, and Toroki. We've already seen Tatara, Tokaki, and Subaru in the original FY, and it is said that Suzuno (priestess of Byakko) was connected to this story by making an appearance as a little girl (as well as being the priestess of Byakko after Takiko's events take place). Who knows, maybe Yuu Watase will surely surprise us by a very special ending. ^_^

Wow Furuba, that is so awesome. I never even knew there was a FY: Genbu Kaiden game being made. I saw that it was a Playstation 2 game, perhaps I might be able to import it. Takiko and Rimudo certainly look very anime looking, and great. Maybe Studio Pierrot will pay attention and develop something like this!! YAY!! :D

Those look great! :) I hope they make an anime for FY: Genbu Kaiden once more volumes of the manga are out. If they started an anime now, they would catch up to the manga story too quickly and have to add filler, so I hope they wait until the manga is close to being done.

I know!!! :D Isn't it exciting? The game's fairly new, since it just came out in June. I went to this website that had the game for sale (It was a link on the website about the game itself), but it says the game would only work on Japanese PS2s. :( I hope an anime version is going to be made soon...

Has anyone gone to the new Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden (http://www.ideaf.co.jp/fusigi/top.html) videogame website lately. They updated more info about the game (if you know Japanese), and best of all, they added some totally amazing new images of the game and the art used for Takiko, Rumido (which I totally loved), and other characters I haven't seen before. I'm not sure, but maybe the other girl could possibly be a younger Suzuno who of course becomes Byakko no Miko in the future; it did look alot like her. This game looks very exciting, but you'd have to import it to play it. It would be like a dream come true of this was actually released domestically in English. ^_^

All right...I'm curious to know about something. Did Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden go on hiatus in Japan? I haven't seen any scans or info about chapters 17-18 (which were supposed to be released in November?) anywhere on the web, and I can't find any information on the recent issues of Fushigi Yuugi Perfect World magazine either. I know a few people on this forum were buying FY: PW, so those of you who did...Can you help me with this information?

I actually heard a rumor that Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden vol. 6 (chap. 17 - 18) was going to be delayed until November 2006. :| I hope its not true becasue I really look forward to seeing it myself. Apparently, Watase-sensei is torturing herself with another new manga. I wonder what kind of story she is doing now. Fushigi Yuugi Perfect World Magazine vol. 6 should still be out by Spring 2006 though.
Btw, since we're on topic here, the picture in my avvie is Takiko. I got this picture from the front cover of FY PW vol. 4. I think it's really pretty ^_^

Well...I like the idea of a new Yuu Watase manga to look forward to (I haven't heard any news on it yet, though, if it's started)...but I wish she would finish FY: GK. (And she's not like CLAMP, who has four members to share the work between a few series...Yuu Watase only has a few assistants.)

I always thought that was Miaka too. The facial features, and the brown hair and eye color are there. She definitely looks a little older here, perhaps the Miaka from the FY: Gaiden (Eikoden) timeline. It was a really pretty picture as well.
I totally agree. I hope that was a misunderstanding, and we could actually get to read FY Genbu Kaiden chap. 17-18 when FY PV vol. 6 gets released. I wonder what kind of manga she is doing, perhaps another shoujo romance. ^_^

Wow, that's a great possiblity of how it could end. It was known that she was devoured by Genbu, and at some point, Einosuke Okuda was going to kill her. Hikitsu and Tomite were known to have died, and their spirits lived on to the very end to protect Takiko's Shinzaho which was created after she summoned Genbu. In the original FY, we see both of them still carry those duties until Miaka's timeline when she proved herself to be a worthy priestess. With that said, we can definite expect for this ending to be alot sadder than Watase-sensei's other stories. Not that I dont like it, but if this ended with Rumido and Takiko reuniting in the afterlife, this story would end up alot like Byakko's story with Suzuno and Tatara reuniting together too. Whatever is really going to happen, all we can do now is wait for it and read this series as it gets released. I'm sure Yuu Watase will have a surprise in her sleve when she finishes this ending. ^_^

I like the Gembu kaiden story. After reading the first volume I thought it was really interesting and all.
But after reading vol 2, I wasn' t so exiting about it anymore... It still is good but... Not the same feeling after reading vol1.
Seems like the same refrain again... Like in Ayashi no ceres... There' s a Tamahome looking kinda guy the girl loves, then a nice kinda guy on the side who loves her and do everything to help her(ex: Yuhi in Aync). The girl has nice friendly feeling toward him but no, her heart is for the Tamahome alike guy... But the Yuhi guy has to protect her and still loves and support her even though she loves another man..., then I' m sure it will follow the same romantic path as in Aync... Seems obvious. Maybe I' m wrong but it just seems like it... It' s deja vu...

Actually...I find Rimudo to be nothing like Tamahome. Rimudo's a reluctant Genbu seishi; he's trying to fight his destiny so he can defeat his father. On the other hand, Tamahome was willing to protect Miaka from the start; he accepted his destiny and later realized his meeting with Miaka was fate. Rimudo hasn't realized that yet. Although Rimudo and Tamahome are roughly the same age, they're really nothing alike. Tamahome came from a poor family and was a strong person who didn't mind showing his sensitive side to the one he loved; Rimudo is a prince (he comes from the ruling family in Bei-jia, IIRC) and he rarely shows his sensitive side to anyone...including Takiko. Rimudo would rather pretend to play the tough guy who depends on only himself while trying to hide the painful feelings inside, and he's rather stubborn when it comes to admitting he has feelings for Takiko. But...either way...I still love Rimudo best. He's very different from past Watase love interests in the fact that he tries to fight his feelings once he realizes them. But...I definitely saw the differences between Tamahome and Rimudo; still, both of them have the central core of a Yuu Watase love interest. ^_^
(Also...Yuu Watase, in a way, said that Tamahome and Rimudo are not really alike when she labeled Tamahome as a "loyal canine" and Rimudo as a "willful feline" in one of her side-columns. She said that she doubted they would get along if they ever met.)
As for Tomite...I'm not sure if he has concrete feelings for Takiko yet. He's definitely not becoming a "solid" love interest like Yuuhi ever was; I'm sure Tomite cares for Takiko, but I'm sure his love will be a bit different from what we're expecting.
There was some deja vu during Genbu Kaiden for me, though...but Yuu Watase wanted some things for original FY fans to reminisce about (like the scene with white light surrounding Takiko relating to Miaka almost going back home in one of the earlier chapters in FY). So...some of the things in Genbu Kaiden are deliberately there for fans to experience deja vu...but I'm sure some other things are purely accidental. I enjoy seeing things that remind me of the original FY, though...It's fun and a bit nostalgic. Genbu Kaiden will surely have its differences later on, though. :)

I completely agree with Furuba. Its nice to have diversity between Yuu Watase's characters. Rimudo was just another perfect example of that. I loved reading that side column, and how Nuriko was all jealous of Rimudo. ^_^ The only deja vu I see happening here is how romantic and dramatic its getting here now between Takiko and Rimudo (and how much more dangerous its getting too). These two things are ever so present in Yuu Watase's stories, something I have always enjoyed myself. :)

What you’ re saying is true. But I don’ t think you understand what I’ m trying to say.
I never said Tamahome and Rimudo are the same. Note that I said “a Tamahome looking kinda guy”.
Tamahome, Rimudo, Kyou, Kougyo, Touya… = same type of guy (the tamahome looking kinda guy) Even though they have different stories, personalities or backgrounds, they are the guys that easily GET the girl, that’ s the POINT. And they really look similar in appearance.
Then there’ s the Yuhi type, the poor unlucky guy on the side (yuhi, hotohori, tomite…) They’ re in the same group cause they definitely love the girl with no hope of her loving them back. As always, they never get the girl cause she ‘ s fallen for the Tamahome type.
Also, the heroin girls are always too similar: Miaka, tampopo, Aya, alice … They ALL fall for the tamahome type.
As for Tomite, maybe his love won’ t be as strong as Yuhi, but he definitely has feelings for Takiko. Anyway, it’ s obvious he’ s no match for the Tamahome type.
In Yuu Watase’ s works it’ s almost always the same refrain…
She’ s not the only one who repeats stuffs. I’ ve seen mangaka like Mazakazu Katsura who did it too. From “Winman” to “Video Girl Ai” to “DNA” or “Is”, there’ s déjà vu everytime.
From FY to Anc to imadoki to Gembu Kaiden …etc, I always see the same refrain… Sure, stories and characters don’ t have the same situation, past, interests personalities, and life, but I always feel like it’ s the same all over again…
I’ ve never seen Yuu’ s “absolute boyfriend” but let me guess… There’ s gotta be a Tamahome type of guy in there. I wouldn’ t be surprised… I’ m used to it by now.
I’ d like Yuu Watase to do something different for a change: Like the girl ending up with a Nakago type, or a shinji Hikari type… Even a yuhi type would be great. Maybe she should try doing a older girl who loves a younger guy, or a popular girl who likes a shorty,… anything that differs from her “Tamahome-girl-Yuhi” love triangle…

It would be nice if Yuu Watase did something she's never done before, a shounen series!! Everything she has done up until know are shoujo as far as I know, and most deal with the same romance/drama themes her stories are known for. Her love-triangles are so predictable. It would be nice if she did something different for a change. Not that I don't like her stories, because I absolutely love them, but change is good. Actually, she's currently working on a new manga, but don't know what it is. Perhaps something that could interest us in the near future. ;)

Yes, she should do a shounen series; I would be very interested to see how that would turn out. ^_^ (Yuu Watase has always claimed to like the sci-fi genre...so she could possibly write a shounen manga from that aspect.) I think Yuu Watase could accomplish an action series similar to Rurouni Kenshin...especially because of the dramatic moments and subtle romance throughout that series. But...then again, Yuu Watase has always written manga for the shoujo genre; she is now known only for manga in the shoujo genre and hasn't made any gesture to write a strictly shounen series. Then again...I find most of Yuu Watase's manga to be enjoyed by both males and females alike...even though the manga anthology she usually writes for is shoujo. (It would still be very interesting to see a shounen series from her, however...Who knows if it will ever come to be, though.)
I agree with those of you who said that Yuu Watase's love triangles are often predictable...but that's one of the better things about her manga: you usually don't have to guess as to who the heroine will end up with. (Yuu Watase has always said that she likes her heroines to have their sights set on one guy and one guy alone...so it's not too surprising that the guys who have unrequited love for the heroines don't make too much headway with making the heroines like them. -_-; Depending on which guy you root for, that aspect of Yuu Watase's manga could be a plus or a minus.)
It would be very interesting to see a Yuu Watase manga where the good girl falls for the "bad boy" who no one approves of. It's a storyline that's been used plenty of times before in the shoujo genre...yet Yuu Watase herself has never tackled that storyline for a series. I'm sure she could add her own Yuu Watase flare to such a series. ;) (I imagine it would be a bit like Mars.)

With her being so successful with Fushigi Yuuhi Genbu Kaiden so far, I also think she has great potential to do something similar from around that timelime thats like Rurouni Kenshin. You can just imagine how much more well known she would become in the industry if she were to do such a story in the shounen genre. I agree the good girl falls for the "bad boy" scenerio would be great to see. Maybe she would see something people never realized he had. When I think about that, I immediately thought about the SNK video game character Iori Yagami from the KOF series. He's my favorite guy, and yet no girl in the series seems to like him. If Yuu Watase did such a scenero in her new manga, it would be awesome. I hope her new manga turns out to be different from the rest.

Volume 3 of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden has just recently been released in most bookstores. (It was released early from its March 7th release date.) While I did read translations for this volume before, there's one thing I didn't catch in the translation when I read it before...Anlu, the oracle, mentions that there are five warriors that still need to be gathered, yet Takiko already has three who have the celestial markings of a Genbu warrior. But...there are only 7 warriors, so someone (of the three already gathered) is obviously not a Genbu warrior (unless the Genbu Seven are actually the Genbu Eight, which I find to be highly unlikely). Any thoughts on this? Personally, I think Uruki/Rimudo might be the one who is not a "true" Genbu warrior; hopefully, though, Yuu Watase will soon shed light on this oddity. (Or...maybe the discrepancy was caused by Uruki/Rimudo never exactly saying that he was going to join Takiko in her quest to summon Genbu. [As if he hadn't accepted his role as one of the Genbu Seven.] However...there were four different locations for the other four missing warriors and Naname himself was in the area where Takiko was; thus, I still don't see how that would make sense with Uruki/Rimudo's situation.)
Also...I'm getting the vibe that Ziyi may be a Genbu warrior. IIRC, before Gebu Kaiden went on hiatus, only four of the seven warriors had been found, so there are still three (or possibly four) who need to be found. So...we don't know what plot twist Yuu Watase may throw at us with the remaining Genbu warriors.

I've recently gotten FY Genbu Kaiden vol. 3 myself. First things first, I was deeply moved by what happened to Augur and Lady Anlu. Feiyan and Ziyi are truly evil for what they did to them. The latest members of the Genbu seven found who were Hatsui and Naname were really cute, and very unique among celestial warriors. Hatsui looks remarkably alot like Q-san from Ayashi no Ceres so I'm probably sure Yuu Watase got his design from her. Naname in his small form is simply adorable.
I can see the Kutou forces (from the land of Seiryu) are still the same even from before the events of the original FY; always into war and trying to take over lands for themselves. Taki (Prince of Kutou) and his followers Hagus (strongest follower who has the ability to copy others powers), Freiyan and Ziyi look like they are the main enemies of this story here. Its no surprise to me since the kingdom of Kutou and the Seiryu seven were the main enemies of the original FY to begin with too. Things are certianly getting more seriousnow, and it really isn't getting more romantic. Interesting to know what will happen as this story goes along, perhaps Ziyi will have a trick up his sleeve now that he is handicapped by one arm.
To FURUBA4EVER: I highly doubt Ziyi would turn out to be a celestial warrior of Genbu, he seemed pretty evil up to this point and actually wanting Takiko dead. I also thought it was wierd how Lady Anlu showed that there were 5 celestial warriors to be found with 3 of them already present. It's possible that one of them isn't indeed a member of the Genbu seven. I'd rather still believe that there are only seven Genbu warriors; Hikitsu, Inami, Uruki, Tomite, Urumiya, Hatsui, and Namame. Possibly one of the celestial warriors Lady Anlu sensed was a member of the Byakko seven. There is a connection with the Byakko seven in this story too as Suzuno will appear at some point in this story.
I'm getting even more interested in this story thus far so I look forward to reading vol. 4 when it comes out. Hopefully to be released by later this year. ^_^

There currently isn't any at this time, but you'd be interested to know that a video game based on the FY Genbu Kaiden story was made, and it had anime-style characters. Maybe something Studio Pierrot might pay attention to some day. Here is a link (http://www.themoony.net/fygk/kagami/) to a fan made website to that game. The chance of seeing something like this released domestically is quite slim. Besides Dragonball, very few "anime-based" games have ever been released here to begin with. Given the fact that Fushigi Yuugi simply isn't very popular either, it's unlikely ever to see the light of day in North America. Your best chance is to import this game, and find a way to play imports on your PS2. It would surely be nice if it did get released here, but really, I don't see that happening.

SPOILER WARNING! Highlight to read =)
If you've read up to volume 3, the necklace Lady Anlu gave Takiko looks ALOT like the Shinzaho. So I think it might be possbile that that very same necklace, was given more powers when she summoned Genbu, making that necklace the Shinzaho.
Of course, I could be dead wrong. But you never know, you know?
Lemina

It certainly was a mysterious object. Before Lady Anlu passed away, she told Takiko her necklace would lead her to the other Genbu celestial warriors; much like something Taiitsukun once gave to Miaka to find the Suzaku warriors. Shinzahos' are created the moment a priestess couples with her beast god. So in escence, Takiko's shinzaho was created after she summoned Genbu. This necklace looks to be another special object. It could still very well be something that could have a big influence to the storyline in general.

Mmm. Your probably right. *scratches the back of her neck* I was looking into it too much. First look, it looks EXACTLY like the Shinzaho, and without thinking about the coupling with the beast god, I automatically assumed maybe that was the Shinzaho. XD..

I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but it seems like the mysterious child who saved Takiko in the mountains when she lost her way was actually Taiitsukun as a child. The child knew that Takiko was the Priestess of Genbu, and she even had the power to appear and disappear suddenly. Considering this story takes place from roughly around the Universe of the Four Gods book origins, she might have been born the moment the book became magical. She is the creater and writer of the Universe of the Four Gods world afterall. This is certianly mysterious, and I'm sure she might very well be a teenage girl when Suzuno appears as the priestess of Byakko. I'm really looking forward to reading volume 4 now. Volume 4 of Genbu Kaiden has been popped up early in some bookstores, so now is the time for discussion! ^_^
Many interesting things happened in this volume. First, we finally get to see some more romantic development between Takiko and Rimudo (very nice, indeed!). Second, we meet Hikitsu for the first time (although his name has been mentioned before in an early volume, this is his first appearance). Thirdly...the volume ends on quite a nice cliffhanger. :D
Also...now, I'm beginning to wonder whether Hagus (the assassin hired by Rimudo's father; also known as the black-cloaked man who can steal powers) is a Genbu warrior. (Yes, more speculation from me! In the past, I thought Ziyi could be a warrior. So...you can see that I'm getting rather impatient with the last few warrior's identities. XD) Since only five (or so we think...thinking back to a certain scene in vol. 3) of the warriors have been discovered so far, there are still two (or possibly three) left to find. I'm beginning to wonder who these two (or possibly three) will be and what their personalities will be like. ^_^
Since FY:GK is still on hiatus in Japan, it seems like it will be quite a while before we see the events that occur after vol. 5. However, despite the hiatus, Viz has scheduled vol. 5 for a November release. Hopefully, the hiatus in Japan will end before then so that we will see a release for vol. 6 in early 2007! (Please, Yuu Watase!!! You can't leave us FY fans hanging like this! :crybaby: )

It's really cool Hikitsu finally comes out of hiding, I really look forward to seeing his personality in depth, more than what we got to see from him in the original FY. It's nice to know it ends in a cliffhanger, typical of Yuu Watase's stories. ^_^
I hope we get to see more of Genbu Kaiden past vol. 5. If we don't, we might not even get to see the 6th volume for quite a while considering they are always released months before in Japan. *Crosses fingers too* After I read the 4th volume, I'll leave my thoughts on this too. Until later.

I've finally gotten Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 4 after such a long wait. This volume was so interesting, just what I've been coming to expect from this series. There definitely was romance in the air between Takiko and Rimudo and its definitely very interesting but Yuu Watase specifically stated herself that she'll "keep romance to a minimun this time" in her column. Considering this story is supposed to end tragic, I think what she stated was just about right here.
As far as Ziyi, I don't think he'll be a Genbu warrior. He was a general of the Kutou army along with Feiyan. We now have Uruki, Tomite, Hatsui, Namame, and Hikitsu in the story. Supposably Inami and Urumiya have yet to reveal themselves as Genbu Warriors. After doing so, the seven Genbu Seishi will be reunited at last.
I'm really looking forward to FY:GW vol. 5 now. Supposably its going to be released this November in the US to go along with what's been released on Fushigi Yuugi Perfect World up until last year or so, so we should be getting FY:GW vol. 5 intact when it's released.
NOW FOR THE EXELLENT NEWS!! It has been revealed that Fushigi Yuugi Perfect World vol. 7 is scheduled to be released this coming September in Japan. What does this mean for us?!? We get to see a continuation of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden into vol. 6!! I think this series is turning out to be just as great as the original Fushigi Yuugi was with all of its cliffhangers, I can't wait for whats in store for us. Thank you Watase-san!!

I finally got my hands on FY: Genbu Kaiden vol. 5 today. It is great!! For anyone who's been following this new series, many important events happen in this volume alone. Takiko went back to Tokyo alright, but knowing her mother passed away, she found a new purpose to go back into the Universe of the Four Gods. She found out that the girl who is destined to become priestess, has the power to have wishes granted. Takiko, knowing she became Priestess of Genbu, found out it was her story, and she could bring her mother back to life. Of course, realistically that can't be possible, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Besides that, she wanted to return because she started missing Limdo, and realized she really has feelings for him. (Do we have a little original FY Flashback here, or what!!) ^_^ New details about the origins of the book were also told, very interesting!!
There is definitely a lot more relationship development between Takiko and Limdo after both of them started missing each other when Takiko briefly went back to Tokyo. I don't want to spoil details about that. Remember, time goes a lot faster in the book. After Takiko returned, everyone was in a dangerous situation and she arrived just in time get them out of that; remember the cliffhanger Furuba was talking about!! ;) After certain events, Takiko vowed to herself she was going to summon Genbu and together with her Genbu Seishi, they all went out in search for Inami and Urumiya in which the mysterious necklace showed the way to both of them. Things happen here and there, and we get to meet Inami. She seemed like a nice person, but seemed she really had other intentions when Takiko told her she was the Priestess of Genbu. Yet again does this volume end in a cliffhanger, but I'm confident Inami is doing what she's doing because she's trying to test her. I can't wait for vol. 6 now. I hope we get to see it by this Winter to Spring 2007 at least!! :)

I wish more people could get into this great series too. *sigh* Well, I'm here to inform that Yuu Watase's Fushigi Yuugi Perfect World Vol. 8 was recently release in Japan, and this volume included chapters 19-20 as well as a really cool FY:GK 2007 calender. Since every Perfect World release comes with two chapters of new story, and we've already had chapters 17-18 in September, it means that we are guaranteed to see a FY:GK Vol. 6 come out in the US right around the corner. We always get to read four chapters in a volume.

Fushigi Yugi is one of my favorite anime and manga of all time. I was so happy when Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden came out in the U.S. I bought it right away because I knew that it will be a good one since it is a prequel of the original Fushigi Yugi.
I am collecting the FY Genbu Kaiden and I have all the five volumes that have been released by VIZ Media. I am so looking forward to the upcoming volumes to see what will happen. I am also hoping that they will make this manga into anime, as they did with FY. Yuu Watase rocks!! :D

Oh, I did that post about a year ago, and a lot has happened since then. Ok, I hope this doesn't sound too confusing. I actually was referring to Yuu Watase's Perfect World Vol. 6 magazine at that time.
It turns out that this particular volume (6) actually had chapters 15-16 of the FY: Genbu Kaiden manga. After that Perfect World was released, FY:GK Vol. 5 had been released with chapters 13-16 last summer. PW vol. 5-6 made up FY:GK vol. 5.
Vol. 7 of PW had chapters 17-18, and that was released last September. Now, Vol. 8 was recently released in Japan and this volume included chapters 19-20 which can now make the real Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden Vol. 6. And we know that every manga released so far has had 4 chapters each. So yeah, FY:GK vol. 6 should have chapters 17-20 and should be released very soon. PW vol. 7-8 should make up FY:GK vol. 6.

Ok, I already PMed you the details, but for everyone else who reads this and wants to know, here is the lowdown. Yuu Watase's Perfect World is a Japanese magazine dedicated to every Yuu Watase and what she's doing in the world of manga and her life as of late. They are released about every month and every volume has new chapters of manga she's currently writing such as Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden, and it comes with cool extras. You don't really miss out anything as far as FYGK is concerned by not seeing PW because we get to see every chapter of FYGK eventually, even if it is a few months later. Other than the little extras that are included in this magazine, you don't really miss out anything. I hope this helped you.
btw, welcome Amethyst and don't be shy to post about what you want to talk about. Feel free to post and make threads about anything you want to express and need help with. :)

Great news for all FY fans. Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 6 has an official release date of March 26, 2007. We'll finally get this see this story continue on after the events that unfolded in the previous volume. We'll get to see more of Inami, and maybe even get to see the last of the Genbu seishi yet to be found, Urumiya. I can't wait to read this volume. I'm really looking forward to it!!
As a bonus, this will also include Ayashi no Ceres Gaiden. This long awaited special was only published as a freebe an issue of Sho-Comi in Japan, and it looks like VIZ finally has listened to us and decided they will release it here. Ayashi no Ceres was a series also released by Yuu Watase, and this short story took place a few years after the events of the original story. It was a short side story that was included, and it had been published sometime in 2000. AnC Gaiden covered events such as what the main characters did in the future timeline, and also more of Cere's past. It was a great special Watase-sama did for us fans, now we'll finally get to see it here. I'm already so excited!! :D

Ah, I love this series. One of my top favorite Yuu Watase series, and I have read all of her others (released in english). I love this series so much more than the original Fushigi Yugi it's not funny. I'm crazy about the characters, the development, the art, the story- total love.
I'm just hating Viz at the moment for taking forever to release the new volume... What annoys me is that I didn't notice any announcment about it on their site either. I wonder when they'll release it, a local manga store said they think sometime in September. I seriously hope it won't be that far off.
Say, about this Ayashi no Ceres special *squee* is it suppose to be included in volume 6?

I read somewhere that it was going to be included in FY:GK vol. 6 here. It's probably a rumor since we never even got the release here. Hopefully it'll still turn out to be true. Ayashi no Ceres Gaiden actually came out as a special in Yuu Watase's Perfect World vol. 7 magazine, and that was released last September in Japan. Yeah, its really exciting!! :D

Here's something new to talk about, Yuu Watase's Perfect World vol. 10 magazine was recently released in Japan and should include the newest chapters of FY: Genbu Kaiden (chap. 22-23). This story has gone far beyond the events that happened in FY: GK vol. 5 here (which ended up at chap. 16), and there is still no official release date for a vol. 6. Rumor has it that it will be by the end of the summer or could be as late as February 2008. I wish VIZ could get their act together and release this already, I am so anxious to get it!!

I really have no idea why it is taking so long, but if you have noticed, vol. 1 and 2 came out in 2005 while vol. 3, 4, and 5 came out all last year. There hasn't been anything released this year. I think this might have happened because the story of FY: Genbu Kaiden has slowed down this year!!! By the time Perfect World vol. 11 comes out later this year, VIZ should have the ability to at least release 2 new volumes out of it, so all we can do is keep waiting for them.

Word out of Japan is that Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 7 is set to be released on September 26, 2007!! It's currently in print and will include chapters 20-23 of the story. Yuu Watase's Perfect World vol. 11 magazine is also set to be released on that same day too.
I personally contacted VIZ Media about Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 6 being released in the US at their support section, and I haven't gotten a response from them at all. FY:GK vol. 6 is supposed to have chapters 17-19 as well as the Ayashi no Ceres Gaiden special. All you can do now is try to contact VIZ from their website at http://www.viz.com/.
I really have no idea why they suddenly stopped releasing it here this year. My guess is because VIZ is waiting for several chapters to come out so they can release every few months next year, but I'm not sure about that. All we can do is keep crossing our fingers. >_<

It's very possible that the reason why there's such a delay between the Japanese tank release and the US volume release is that there's something in the license contract that says that the US version can not be released until "x amount of time has passed after the Japanese tank". It certainly doesn't take that long to translate it, so there has to be something stating length of time before release. I wouldn't fault Viz for this if it's contractual.

OMG! Now I feel disappointed but also REALLY excited! I have to say I ADORE Fushigi Yuugi... I can't believe the 6th volume won't come out until next year in February! I mean, that seems like forever away. Then again, I get this weird feeling it's gonna be here before I know it.
Wish I could pre-order. But I can't; Dad would kill me. Oh well.. I'll have to wait. Thanks PiscesAngel85! Along with the other stuff I also feel kind of relieved now. Cause I've been spazzing out trying to find out when vol. 6 was gonna come out and now I know!
Hmm... I feel really late saying all this but... I completely agree with you guys! Genbu Kaiden is a lot more mature. I think I actually might like it better than the Seiryu/Suzaku one. I mean that one is freaking awesome too and all. Dunno. But I also do hope she ends up doing something on the Byakko stuff too! It'd be so cool. I'd have a whole shelf dedicated to everything Fushigi Yuugi lol! Other than that I can't say too much.. Dad's pushing me off.. argh! But anyway... I really hope that volume six isn't delayed AGAIN! February it MUST come! Otherwise.. I'll go insane! e.e; As I'm sure most of you all will too <<;;
Annnd! THEY HAVE TO MAKE AN ANIME OF THIS! Of course I think they should wait until she's nearly done or something with the Genbu Kaiden to do it since they'll miss important stuff if they don't but yeh... it would be awesome!

It isn't difficult to find vol.2 of FY: Genbu Kaiden. First off, the AN store (http://www.animenation.com/1591169119.html) has it for sale. You can also find it at your local comic book stores that sell manga such as Borders or Barnes & Noble. Also worth mentioning, Yuu Watase's Perfect World vol. 12 magazine is set to be released on December 27, 2007 in Japan. It will contain chapters 26-27 of FY:GK as well as a 2008 calender of it. FY:GK vol. 8 containing chapters 24-27 is also set to be released on March 26, 2008 in Japan. FY:GK vol. 7 already had chapters 20-23 dating back to Perfect World vol. 9. Perfect World is a magazine created by Yuu Watase dedicated to her works, and it basically has everything she has been doing up to date including Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden. They are released every 3 months. You'll find that they have lots of extras such as posters, calenders, drama cd's, short manga updates to previous works she's done, and more. It is only sold in Japan, so you'll have to import it to get it. It's well worth it if you're a fan of her works. ^_^

First of all Hi to everyone :)!
I'am a BIG FAN of Fushigi Yugi and I'm glad I found this thread, whew.... I've been wanting to talk to everybody who like Genbu Kaiden and I'm really happy to be here!
Me too! I've already read Volume 6, I got it one week ago or so. It's really interesting and intruiging the thing about the Genbu Warriors especially Urumiya having a split characters and about his twin brother. And another revelations, Inami having a miscarriaged and Shigi being a eunnuch. So much twists and revelations, too bad it only has 3 short chapters. I can't wait for volume 7, I wish they hurry up because I don't want to wait for a year again....
Anyways a satisfying volume and I think I'm growing attached towards Shigi.
Again Hi to everyone and I hope I could make lots of friends here who likes Fushigi Yugi too!^_^ Watase-sama ROCKS especially Fushigi.
Oh yeah the extra story about Ceres was great too!

What?!?! You mean you've never read the 5th one? Why? Awww sorry to hear that, you should get one because I'm telling you the volume just keep better and better. Volume 5 was funny and had some of the romatic scenes in it.

What?! of course I've read the 5th one lol I have all the volumes 1-5! I was saying I haven't read the 6th volume. But you're right they just get better and better. I was so happy when Taki and Uruki finally admit they love each other during the dance.

Yey first buddy here....
Yup I love that scene although I prefer little Tomite over Uruki. I really like Tomite and his puppy love toward Takiko. They are so sweet, especially in volume 2 where Tomite almost kiss Takiko while sleeping.
I like Namame also he looks like a ginger bread cookie.
HikarunoTenshi
January 27th, 2008, 11:49 AM
Yea Tomite is pretty funny XD
Lol! Yea Namame is awesome! You're right... he does look like a ginger bread cookie. I don't think I'd want to eat him though. He wouldn't be too happy =P
I hope she doesn't end the Genbu Kaiden series with how Takiko ended in the Suzaku/Seiryu series. I dun want Takiko to die!

I know! About the ending.... I wish Watase-sama will have more surprises for us, who knows maybe she'll have a big plot twist or some sort.....
I'm thinking maybe the thing about Takikio's father killing her was all heresay, to make everyone not to get near the book especially Suzuno.
I don't know, just please don't kill Takiko, I really like her she's really strong and strong protagonist according to Taiisukun in Suzaku/Seiryu arc, doesn't get devoured by the beast god.
I really like this series and to think that the end will be bad, I'll die. Who knows maybe Watase-sama have some interesting ending for Genbu Kaiden, I'm crossing my finger that the ending she come-up with will be great and satisfying.

Welcome FushigiYugiFan. Glad to have more FY fans in the forums. Unfortunately, Takiko will sacrifice herself to Genbu as was told in the original Fushigi Yuugi. All seven Genbu celestial warriors have reunited up to vol. 6 of Fushig Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden. I just hope it ends better. I look forward to Suzuno's story. Byyako's story has yet to be told.

Yup I do want to witness Suzuno's journey inside the book and I really wanted to meet all of Byakko seishi. So far Subaru, Tokaki and Tatara were all great characters and I like Tatara next to Chichiri and Tomite.
Hi Lemina thanks for your heartwarming welcome.... I wish this thread will be active till the end of Genbu Kaiden manga.
I just can't stop talking about Fushigi, no one in our house cares they are all middle aged person..... huhuhuhu.....
I wish the sacrifice thing is not true. All lies maybe?

I've tried to keep this thread running ever since the series first came out. It should still be active as long as fans continue posting their thoughts on this series. FY: Genbu Kaiden had stopped production up to 2006, but now that vol. 6 has finally come out, it should be more active as long as VIZ keeps releasing the upcoming volumes of the manga regularly. Lets try to keep it active. ^_^

Oh my gosh I know. I'm really hoping for the ending to be different too. But Watase is good at twists so I guess we'll just have to wait and find out. I mean.. if Takiko really is going to be sacrificed by her father I hope Watase makes it really good with the reasons and stuff. Or maybe the whole sacrifice thing is just the story told because the people of the city couldn't explain what really happened... who knows... I love Fushigi Yuugi!
Yea to see Suzuno's tale would be so fun! I wonder if she's going to actually make a whole new series with Byakko or tie it in with Genbu Kaiden... I'd can't wait to see Byakko and everything
Edit: Woops late response.... yea this thread is amazing! =) I love it

I think Watase-sama will make a separate manga for Byakko Arc.
I agree if Takiko does end up sacrificing herself it should have a great reason why.
"Sigh" long wait are unbearable it suck! I really can't wait for the next volume and Byakko arc itself. But that's what the only thing we can do is to be patient and wait. I hope Watase-sama should focus more on Fushigi stories first than her new series.......... Long wait frustrates me!

I like Genbu Kaiden a little bit more because the story seems more mature but I miss some of the charm of Suzaku/Seiryu arc especially the slapastick jokes, and those wacky personalities of Miaka's warriors. But since it's the original it has always a place for me....
You should check it out, because that's what I did when I found out on the other forum that they have bought their own copy of Genbu Kaiden. At first I was having a conflict if I should go or not, but I decided to go and what do you know they have it! Me too I'm working on my drivers license so that I wouldn't ask anyone to drive me. I'm sure FY Genbu Kaiden would have a few slapstick jokes like the original FY anime had if they animated FY Genbu Kaiden. Some possible comedic moments would be with Hatsui and Namame, but I would still expect this story to be more serious than the original. At least the manga gives me that impression when I compare it to the original FY manga. Takiko gives me the impression that she is very strong so far, but somewhere along the story, something is going to happen that will ultimately be too much for her. Hopefully, Suzuno's story could tie in with the conclusion of this series so it would continue and not end on a bad note.
On the other hand, Byyako's story could possibly be much more lovey-dovey and comedic since we got that impression from Tokaki and Subaru of the Byyako seven by how fun they seemed to be around with in the land of Sairou. Byyako's story is supposed to end on a positive note due to Suzuno's strong sense of will like Miaka. Tatara and Suzuno fell in love much like Miaka and Tamahome did, and in the end they were reunited together. I'm trying not too say too much otherwise I would be spoiling it. :P

I agree, story wise Genbu Kaiden you can definitely feel that it has a potential to be more serious and darker.
I can't wait for the Byakko's Arc, I also concur about the idea of Suzuno's warriors to be somewhat like Miaka's warriors. The only thing I do not like about Suzuno was her mole (located left side below her lips) it bugs me. But yeah I find Tokaki and Subaru entertaining. I also think Byakko's Arc will focus on much romance since it has 2 couples in it, Tokaki and Subaru & Tatara and Suzuno.

I really look forward to Tokaki and Subaru as a couple too. It would be interesting to see if we even get to see Tamahome as a boy in this series too because he was taught martial arts by Tokaki afterall. We also need more info on the other members of the Byyako seven, Kokie (stomach), Toroki (turtle snout), Karasuki (investigator), and Ameturi (rain net). It would be interesting to see how they would tie in with the story since they never appeared in the original Fushigi Yuugi.
I always get confused when I mention Byyako. I don't know if it's "Byyako" or "Byakko". I've literally gotten "Byyako" from reading translations, but most people actually say "Byakko". I would really like to read this new part of the FY story to actually know the correct way to say it. -_-;

I would love to know all of the Byakko Seishi's powers since they are the last warriors that we've never known.......
I think it is "Byakko" because I took Japanese class before so yeah "Bya" you spell it separate from "ko" and they have extra writing for "k".

I just recently got into FYGK. I've already read volumes 1-2 and I still have volumes 3-4 waiting to be read on my shelf (I will have to get volumes 5 and 6 sometime soon).
I must say that it's a lot better than I expected. I loved the original FY and didn't realize how much I wasn't a big fan of Miaka as the main heroine until I read FYGK. I almost stayed away because my bf wasn't a big fan of the FY OVAs that came after the tv series and thought that maybe Yu Watase was trying to milk the FY franchise for what its worth . . . anyways, FYGK is lot more mature like many of you have said, so I'm glad that Yu Watase decided to come out with this prequel ^_^

Yeah, if there was something I liked about the FY OVA's, it was the parodies in the first two OVA's. The first OVA omake was cute as members of the Suzaku and Seiryu seven each rode a bus to a recreational trip, and we got to see things characters in the series never did; characters cross-dressing, and other parody jokes. The second OVA omake was more or less redubbing events that happened in that OVA and changing the lines around to make them humorous, it was quite funny too.
I'm glad you're both liking FY: Genbu Kaiden icyglaze and sakura_r0se. It certainly is more mature than the original FY story. I look forward for vol. 7 to be released. No official word yet, but look forward to a possible May 2008 release if they are going to be released every 3 months. ;)

November 2008 would feel like an eterinty, but I could handle it. >_< It's understandable why this would happen because Japan currently has up to FY:GK vol. 7 with FY:GK vol. 8 being released in March 26, 2008. We would be lucky if we got anything beyond vol. 7 in the US this year, so it's all about playing catch up with Japan the way things are now.
On a side note, Perfect World vol. 13 is also set to be published on March 26, 2008. It will contain chapters 28-29 which are supposed to be the first two chapters of FY:GK vol. 9. With FY:GK vol. 8 being released shortly in Japan, we would be lucky to even get it in the US this year. *sigh*

I just finished reading the sixth volume of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden and I can say that I enjoyed it a lot. The appearance of more Celestial Warriors is really good, huh? This volume left me wanting to know what's gonna happen next and who is really the seventh Celestial Warrior. The fact that there a release date has been set for the seventh volume is really encouraging. I just knew that Yuu Watase took some time off because of some health problems and that's the main reason for the delay of the sixth volume.

Chapter 27Hi! I'm new and I was just reading all your posts on FY:GK I love it!! I just finished chap.27 and I can't wait to see what happens after Takiko leaves again. They were all so mean....I cried. Hope we don't have to wait too long to get the new chaps!!
I also was wondering if anyone knows anything about Watase changing the story from the original plot layed out in the first FY? The Genbu Priestess was killed by her father, but that would be the worst ending ever! She'd be the only Priestess not to get a happy ending... Tomo got to come back the the real world to be with Miaka, Yui got Miaka's brother's best buddy, the other priestess got to come back, live and then die with Tarata (spelling?)...it just wouldn't be right to have Taki end up with the shaft! And Watase-san would have to kill Uruki for sure if she died at her father's hand...or he'd go insaine knowing she was dead after everything he did to keep her alive (even giving her up for her own life).
I had read on here that Watase had said somewhere that she was surprised at what she had wrote about Genbu in the original FY and that she might change some things....??? Is that true??
HELP!!! I can't believe Watase left us hangin' like that at chap. 27!!!!

I really hope Yuu Watase actually makes an ending that somehow transitions the story of Takiko to the story of Suzuno and Byakko no Miko. We've all known for a long time that the story of Takiko was going to end tragic because of the events that happened in episode 34 of the FY TV series. I hope it ends happier too, but I also hope Yuu Watase gives us a glimpse of things to come in Byakko no Miko's story. Only until then will the story of FY be complete. ^_^

Not exactly, cause in the original the story of Genbu is not detailed. They believe that Takiko died because that is what written on the note that her father wrote. My theory is, is that the note was just a lie to cover up something and so that no one could get near the book, well something like that.
Well I've never heard that. All I know Yui got devoured because her feelings isn't true she was full of hatred etc. and that she was weak (emotionally). While in the other hand Miaka was brave and true to herself that's why. Their destiny has nothing to do with the previous priestesses it's all in their will.
Lemina
March 26th, 2008, 06:32 AM
Yeah, there were huge differences between Yui and Takiko. Genbu no Miko's story is supposed to be tragic because it was told in the original story when Miaka traveled to Hokkan that she was killed by her father and then himself. Hikitsu and Tomite were known to have died, and their spirits lived on to the very end to protect Takiko's Shinzaho which was created after she summoned Genbu. Genbu no Miko was devoured by the Genbu beast god and because of it, Einosuke Okuda killed her. This of course can also go back to what I said in this (http://www.animenation.net/forums/showpost.php?p=5135434&postcount=27) post. We'll see how this story ends.
On the other hand, Yui ultimately was devoured by Seiryu because of two reasons. One of the reasons that she became the priestess of Seiryu was out of anger and retaliation for what Miaka did to her when she found out she was kissing Tamahome. Yui sort of developed a crush for Tama too at the beginning, and she didn't know Miaka had fallen in love with him first. She became jealous that Tamahome would find happiness being with Miaka instead of her when she thought Miaka came back to the Universe of the Four Gods to rescue her. Feeling betrayed because of Miaka's selfishness, things got from bad to worse throughout the story.
As for the second reason, much to Nakago's ambitions, he took advantage of this opportunity and manipulated her to do things that fulfilled his own ambitions and revenge. The moment Yui was sent back to the Universe of the Four Gods, she appeared at the wrong place, and he appeared at the right moment and saved her from men who wanted to rape her, and all this happened before he knew about what was going on with Miaka. With the bad experiences thinking she was raped, and now these with Miaka, she became severely depressed and even suicidal. After Nakago knew of all this, he tried take advantage of those feelings as he mentally tried to manipulate her mind to use her as the priestess of Seiryu so that he can have his ultimate wish granted in the end. She had a poor mind and heart, didn't care for her seishi much like Miaka did, and so ultimately Seiryu-seikun devoured her.

March 26th, 2008, 09:02 PM
Back when I used to watch the original FY and was really into anime, I used to read about Japanese history too. I came across this story which actually happened in real life. All you have to do is research it and you'll find it. Knowing Genbu is a huge turtle, I bet Yuu Watase is cooking up something that will connect this story with what happened in real time. In other words, Takiko summons Genbu, the best god Genbu appears, she is devoured by Genbu much like Yui was, and Genbu shakes the ground so much that he causes an earthquake. Einosuke Okuda has no choice but to kill her before Genbu goes out of control. This is a pure specuation in my part, but you never know right. ^_^

True, true, OMG if this is going to be the ending you just spoiled me hahahaha. And knowing Yuu Watase, she said she's pretty good with history so there might be a chance that she might planning up something like this. I can see that if Takiko summoned the beast God Genbu and go out in the real world of course it will shaken the ground hahaha cause turtle are heavy I guess. I totally can't wait for volume 7 to come out!! I really hope it doesn't take till November but November is better than next year. I knew it had been a long time for them to put out volume 6 but it wasn't until last night that I realized they went a whole year without putting it out. Luckily I've had a few other mangas like Inu Yasha to keep me busy but the wait time is killing me!! I totally forgot about Suzuno being one of the other priestesses. It's been sooo LONG since I read the old FY that I totally forgot that. After reading these posts last night I am totally rereading the series to refresh my memory. I've been wanting to read it again anyways and since I am home sick with a cold I am immersing myself in all things FY! I think it will be really sad if Takiko dies but even if she does I'm sure that Watase will make it very moving and make sense. She practically killed off all of Miaka's warriors and still managed to leave us happy so no matter what I am sure it will be good, if a tear jerker.

Wow Coeli! Volume 4?! That would be frustrating! You're in for some good manga though I will tell you that!! It's so frustrating having to wait for it to come out. There are times that I REALLY wish I could read Japanese so I wouldn't have to wait so long for the English version to come out. If you guys are only on Volume 4 I guess we in the states shouldn't be complaining so much. :( But her stories are so good it always leaves you dying to know more.
I am re-reading the original FY like I said in my previous post because I forgot a lot of the details about the Genbu priestess and what not that were revealed in FY. Since I love the story sooo much it gave me a perfect excuse to go back and reread and what better way to kill time when you are stuck at home with a cold. I just read the part where Tamahome's family gets killed though and that made me cry! ;( So sad!!
But right after that part Miaka's brother Keisuke and his friend Tetsuya are researching in the library to find out some more information on the Universe of the Four Gods and the translator. Tetsuya says that in 1923 (12th year of Taisho) that Einosuke Okudo murdered his only daughter Takiko and then commited suicide. Since everyone has been hypothesizing how Watase might handle this with FY:GK it could be that perhaps when Takiko disappears without a trace that everyone assumes that he murdered her. Maybe in fact she just stays in the story or something like that... Then maybe to be with his wife or guilt over his relationship with his family or the accustations lead him to eventually commit suicide... I dunno, it could be a possibilty... Like I said though I'm just beginning to refresh my memory on this stuff because I had totally forgotten about them talking about this. When she released FY:GK I recognized Tomite as being one of the warriors that they met in Genbu but I totally forgot about this other stuff. So my guess could be totally off the mark at this point since I don't remember what all else is revealed about her in this series. But at this point this is my theory what do you guys think??

Lemina quick question. You keep mentioning this additional magazine where they are serializing FY:GK. I'm assuming it's in Japanese, right? I was hoping that they were planning on something like that for in English and that is why there was such a delay. When the original FY was coming out in English for the first time they were serializing it in Animerica Extra for the longest time. They were so far ahead of the books and it came out every month so that's where I ended up reading most of FY because I just couldn't bare the wait for it to come out in manga form. It wasn't till Animerica Extra quit running it that I went back to the manga form. I understand the delay and all since it is a series that is still in creation unlike the stuff before that had been out in Japan a while before it reached the states. But it sure is hard to wait! I remember when manga first started to take off in the states I was getting into Sailor Moon which was my first anime that I ever fell in love with. Next came Magic Knight Rayearth and then my lovely Fushigi Yugi!! But I remember we couldn't wait for the next Sailor Moon to come out and back then it was only being serialized in what would one day develop into Tokyo Pop manags I believe. But I have a whole bunch of the mangas in Japanese because it was taking so long to get the story that me and my friends would all look at the pictures and try to guess what was happening because we couldn't read Japanese! LOL :P I don't want to spoil FY:GK that way since I've got a little more patience now, but I sure do wish they would serialize it in the between times for the manga so we wouldn't have to suffer so long. <sigh> :crybaby:

Yes, it's only in Japanese. Perfect World is a magazine dedicated to everything Yuu Watase, including her latest works. Currently, vol. 13 of PW was recently released and has chapters 28 - 29 of FY:GK, which should take place until Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 9. Japan is waay ahead, and you could imagine that this volume won't be released in the US for a quite a while, until next year at the latest.
I was a huge fan of Animerica and Animerica Extra just for the reasons you stated. I wish they kept releasing the latest manga series like they used too. Nowadays, VIZ's Shoujo Beat and Shonen Jump have replaced Animerica Extra for today's manga serializations.
Welcome to AN NeoSerenity. It's great to have another avid FY and Sailor Moon fan in the forums. ^_^ Feel free to post here when you have time to talk about the latest in FY:GK.

Hum.. It looks like the futur is very dark for Takiko.
I don't see how there could be a happy ending now that she has(spoiler from chapter 28+)tuberculosis... maybe that's another reason her dad killed her? He knew she was slowly dying from the disease as well as being eaten by Genbu?
Anyways, I still hope that she'll survive against all odds, she is such a great female character!
Also, I find it weird that they haven't talked about the obligatory virginity of the priestess yet, since it was such an important theme in the Suzaku's arc.
I guess I'll stay tuned to learn more!

Uhhhhh I understand the consequences of using spoiler tags but can you guys kindly consider when putting a spoiler, could you at least try to say if it's a spoiler for scan or manga version. Because some of us follows FYGK through the manga and we're still waiting for chapter 20. So if you guys put a spoiler just let us know which version it is. Thanks!
PS: That spoiler above is definitely a spoiler for a manga reader like me.

(This message contains original FY spoilers)
Someone back in the thread questioned why Suzaku was able to grant Miaka's wish for Tamahome to be a part of her world when all the other beast Gods said no. I just finished reading the last Fushigi Yugi and I don't think Suzaku really did. Because at the end Suzaku says, "Taka, you are no artifice of mine. The memories you possess as Taka Sukanami are real. It is for your sake that 'Tamahome' existed. I was simply permitted to...borrow...a power that exists beyond the limits of time, space, and worlds. The power that allowed you to meet...was the power of your own love." So I interpret that as Taka already existed in the real world Suzaku put him in the world of the book because they were already fated to be together because they were soulmates and who would best protect the priestess but the man was destined to love her most. In the end all that Suzaku did was grant Taka, Tamahome's memories. He didn't really make Tamahome a man of the real world, he simply granted a man of the real world the memories of a character based on him. What that means ultimatey for Takiko is that she won't probably get to bring Uruki to her world or stay with him in the book because it is still something they can't grant. It could be that he exists in the real world like Taka, but I don't know if Watase would repeat that scenario. I'm sure it will be sad no matter what. Maybe they will get to be together in the afterlife only like the Byakko priestess and preist.

Fushigi Yugi Fan thanks for the welcome! I think your idea on the note could be true. Her father could've sent the book away so that his daughter would be out of danger from it. Hoping that his friend would find a way of sealing it away to prevent it from happening again. It only really says what his plan would be. That he 'planned' on killing his daughter and then himself. Maybe something changed and that didn't happen. But maybe she disappears for one reason or another and maybe her dad does die in the battle or something...but becuase of the note everone thinks that he must've followed through with the idea when in fact he didn't. Maybe... I dunno. In light of that spoiler from chapter 28 which I also accidentally read, it could be that Tsuki is on to something as well... Hmmm? /:I Just don't know. I look forward to finding out how she handles it. Everything probably won't turn out as it seems in FY because Watase did comment that when she looked back she couldn't believe what she wrote about the Genbu priestess and how to handle it. So I am sure she will be throwing in some twists to make up for the parts she doesn't like.

It's ok. Welcome to the thread by the way! Although you're way ahead of us with the story.
@NeoSerenity,
I guess the possibility of my prediction is low, based on the spoiler above (provided by Tsuki) we may have an unfortunate end to this series. Well hopefully it'll be a great tragic end cause I myself is fond of Heavy Drama. But it depends if the drama has a point, significant, reasonable cause etc. In short, I want a satisfying end.

Thanks for understanding Tsuki. I know Japan is way ahead of us in Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden so far, and it's exciting to talk about the lastest events in the story. I always wonder long this series will continue before we get to see the real ending.
(!) Speaking from a moderator mindset, next time anyone wants to participate in this thread, remember to use Spoiler Tags when neccessary if you are talking about future events past Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 6. If you enjoyed the character cast in the original Fushigi Yuugi, you'll love the new character cast in this spin-off series in their own way as well. The differences between them is that this character cast in FY:GK is much more mature and not as bishonen looking as the Suzaku seven were (Though, I have to say that Uruki is quite handsome). You'll love the Genbu seven and even a young Taiitsukun appears in this series. I would highly recommend picking up this series. It hurts my heart to hear everyone bashing Fushigi Yugi. I loved that series. :'( Yeah Miaka could be ditzy but I loved that about her. I loved the humor in the first FY. Now I love Genbu Kaiden too. They have a different feel. FY was a lot lighter more comedic at least the first half before characters started dropping like flies. But I loved it! I think they're both unique series and I'm one of the girls who likes the love aspect part of both series. GK is deffinately a more serious series. But I LOVE Uruki! He's great. Tomite and Hikitsu I like a lot. So far I'm not overly attached to Hatsui or Inami they're just ok for me but they may grow on me with time. But I do like Urumiya and I'm curious to see where that character goes. Takiko is awesome. She is definitely a strong female lead, she does know how to take care of herself, and I like that about her. I definitely recommend the series of course I probably wouldn't be participating in the thread if I didn't like it though so I am a little biased. :P Tee-hee!

I can now confirm that there will be a Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 9. It will be released in Japan on September 26, 2008. Yuu Watase's Perfect World magazine already has issue#14 released and contains chapters 30 and 31 of FYGK in Japanese. This should chronologically take place around vol. 10 of the manga. By contrast, only up to vol. 6 has been released domestically. We are awaiting vol. 7 sometime later this year. VIZ Media has not confirmed the release of the title on their website yet.

On a plane ride back from Europe this month I started FY:GK and I had whipped through all 6 volumes before I reached the US! I don't know how so many of you have the strength not to read onward!! I absolutely caved and read online translations up to Chapter 31. ::LOVE IT:: But that said, if you haven't read that far, please don't read my below thoughts/speculations because I DO NOT want to spoil you!!
Spoilers begin here, stop reading now unless you've reached chapter 31!!
So...did anyone else about DIE when Firuka was getting a little too close with Uruki?! I hated her so much for the 'bed chamber' comment, feeding him, wrapping his bandages, touching his face, catching him when he stumbled, telling Takiko how jealous she was...and basically going anywhere near him. YES, the guy is gorgeous, but hands off!! After reading a bit further and cooling off about her, I started putting some puzzle pieces together though...is she the daughter of the King? Earlier in the series it is mentioned that the king only had daughters, she made that "I who could not become his heir" comment, and now that she's offering to help Haagasu get to Tegu... Going back over the story with this new perspective in mind, I actually LIKE her oddly enough! I wouldn't have guessed THAT would happen!! Oh the difference a "cousin" title can make! :-P
Also, WHAT a chapter to leave us hanging on!! I'm referencing the end of Chapter 31...what do you guys think is going to happen? So far there hasn't been much reference to Takiko NEEDING to remain a virgin in order to summon Genbu. Inami kind of made a reference when she brought up Uruki's anger if he had seen the guys in the alley attempt to take Takiko's virginity and status as miko. Takiko got a question mark above her head and that was about it :-P. She is older than Miaka was...Takiko is 17. She and Uruki have certainly been through a lot together so it wouldn't seem too soon...and maybe most of all it's a possibility because she is certain to die and she knows it (it appears that if Genbu doesn't get her, the tuberculosis surely will). Don't get me wrong, I DO NOT want her to die and would be pleased as punch if she didn't, but I'm just saying from her character's perspective, that is the outlook. And I might as well throw in there that Uruki has gone a month believing that he's lost her forever, so he's lost most inhibitions himself. It's like the Song of the Gondola...life is brief, there may be no tomorrow (and to these two, that is clear as day now)...but what do you guys think/want? There is certainly something to keeping that tension between them by not allowing them to consumate their love.

OMG I finished volume 7 and it was great!
So happy I got to see the cast again! It has been a long time since I went inside LOL.... The circumstances is really getting exciting.... Sad things happened and new character(s) might get introduced next volume... More romantic things might come up in the latter volume. Lastly something tragic might really happen to this series according to Watase's side comments Genbu arc is about "life and death" and Takiko and Uruki's romance is "bittersweet". OMG but against all odds I'm still rooting for a nice happy ending. Watase's remarks sounds that she is really going to the ending that was mentioned in the original...
Anyways volume 7 was great can't wait for the next volume....... Aw man how many freaking months do we need to wait again! Sigh I need to reread this again cause somethings I can't quite get in the first chapter so to make things clear and understandable..... Love all the characters here btw... One complain though need more Ziyi scenes.... Oh and to much action in this volume!

After such a long wait, I finally got the chance to read Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 7!! I got it as a gift for Christmas. Again, the manga ended very sad as someone important to Limdo and everyone else passed on. He wasn't one of the celestial warriors though. For those you haven't gotten it, I would recommend reading it!!
Yuu Watase has revealed on her column that two volumes of the manga will be released per year, and she hopes to wrap up the series by vol. 12 if it goes her way. It may possibly be longer, but only time will tell. At this rate, the story of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden will end around 2010 in Japan. The current cover (issue #13) has a picture of all for priestesses in it. It's so cool. Who knows when FY:GK vol. 8 will be released in the US now. Hopefully sooner rather than later. It's already been released in Japan since this past March. Vol. 9 is currently set to released next year in Japan.

I'm one of those people who caved and read the online version, so I've read up to chapter 31. Now I'm literally counting down the days until 32 comes out.
While I wait for 32, I've been going absolutely insane. So far I have already reread the entire series twice, read all the fanfiction and visited every fan site I could find, and googled it about a thousand times. I have no idea how I'll survive until March 28th. Hopefully this thread will help ;)

Sigh I am so jealous of Japan right now. I read a few translated scans on: http://www.onemanga.com/Fushigi_Yuugi_Genbu_Kaiden/
After I finished reading volume 8 and wanted more. But I don't know where those scans relate to what volume they are reading in Japan but I know I am dying to find out more. I really wish VIZ would start easing our suffering by giving us a gestimation when future issues might come out. Seems like they don't do that anymore. I got an email notifying me Vol. 8 was out from Barnes and Nobles because I bought one there once before and I was like yipee!!!!! I went straight out and bought and read it that night, instead of doing my history paper. lol -_-; Paper shmaper I need my hit of Fushigi Yugi! But of course it left me wanting more. The scans at the website above made me happy, but not the same as the real thing. Sadly it too left me wanting more and it hasn't had any more additions this year so that makes me sad too, so who knows when I'll get to see more... :crybaby:

This reply is in reference to FYGK Vol.8 and scans too so DON'T read unless you have read the scans!!!
I think you may be on to something!! I totally didn't make that connection but now that you mention it she could totally be Uruki's sister. I didn't remember that comment but I could see that happening. That would also explain why and how she might have information on how to find Teg I too was like keep your grubby paws off Uruki and thinking Uruki don't you dare do anything stupid!! The scans left me wondering about the whole virginity thing too. They really haven't mentioned much about it until then. I kind hope that they do get to. Especially considering that Takiko is dying of Tuberculosis. It would kind of suck if after all they've been through that they never get to be together in that way. Especially now that Uruki proposed!!! I was like OMG!!! Yeah!!! It's is killing me now to know what happens. I think the tuberculosis was a good way to go though. I was kind of bothered about how we've been told the story is going to end so far. But somehow now it would bother me less now, if she is going to die anyway from Tuberculosis her sacrifice as priestess is less tragic. She is just choosing a nobler way to die. If she is going to die at least now she can die to save the ones she loves. My guess is that one of her wishes now will be to end the ice age. Perhaps to heal the relationship between Limdo and his father, maybe? I don't know. I'm stumped on what the other two might be, but I think it makes sense that first one will likely be one of them. Gotta say one of my favorite parts in Vol. 8 is when Uruki smells the toqua seed and realizes that Takiko is sneaking off and flies off to stop her. I was like awwwww! They are so cute together! I liked it in the scans when he smells the toqua when she comes back to their world and freaks out! He's like get outta my way! I've gotta go protect my girl! It is so sweet!!! I love it!!! I also like the part in Vol. 8 when Filka goes to visit Takiko where she's waiting to meet Hagus and Namame has been feeling all her emotions and tries to keep Filka out! lol I loved it! I was like you GO Namame! I like Namame's character more and more. :) I'm still not super attached to Inami or Hatsui but I really like the rest. Although I did like it in Vol. 6 and 7 when Inami is physically restraining Uruki to keep him from flying to save Takiko. That was another awwww moment!

Apparently, Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden vol. 8 has already been released. ANN and the official website of VIZ (http://www.viz.com/products/products.php?product_id=7981) say it was out on April 7th, 2009. I actually thought it wasn't going to be released this soon as it took forever to release vol. 6 and 7. I'm really looking forward to getting this volume when I go manga shopping next time.
It looks like FY: Genbu Kaiden vol. 9 will be around the corner as well. According to sources, it will be released on November 3, 2009 in the US. Chronologically, both of these volumes will have up to chapter 31 of the story released in the US by the time the year is over.
There have been no Perfect World magazines released in Japan since PW issue# 14 which was released about this time last year. This magazine contained the events that happened in vol. 9 of FY: Genbu Kaiden with chapters 30-31. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the story will continue past vol. 9 for quite some time.
I'll post again when I post my impressions on FY: Genbu Kaiden vol. 8!!

Okay, I had to join just to post on here.
First of all, those of us who read this series online probably already know this tidbit I'm about to share, but Yuu Watase has been taking a break from GK after chapter 31 was released and won't be getting back to it until 2010. Watase's Sorai has been translating Watase's blog and posting it in English on a livejournal website in the same format as she has been posting hers, so if you'd like to read her translated words, go here: http://watasesorai.livejournal.com/
I'll post her words below (March 16, 2009):
"About Genbu Kaiden....
I'm terribly sorry.
It's being postponed until next year. I will be uploading the official announcement onto the website. I was so willing to work on it, so when we decided upon the postponement, I was really depressed for several days. However, in my current circumstances, I thought I was being realistic in making the decision that it was impossible right now.
It also annoyed the editorial department at Flower Comics, but I feel it won't be good for the publishing if I'm not able to concentrate well on it.
My physical condition....how do I say this...I had to bear a lot with my mother being hospitalized last year. There has been a significant amount of fatigue from going and coming and carrying out weekly publishing. Furthermore, my mother was hospitalized again last month, and hasn't left yet. I've had to focus on work with that anxiety, and when I forcibly had to return home on my own birthday, I had a magnificent breakdown while wandering aimlessly around the hospital (bitter smile).
While I was far away from her, my mind and body were fairly conflicted with the thought: "One of my parents is in the hospital--is this really the time to be drawing manga?" I barely made deadlines, and I could hardly move.
So when I returned home and saw her face, I was able to calm down a little, so that was good. (Every time she went to the hospital, she would always be worried about her job, but mine was the one that was pandemomium.)
However, leaving her behind again and coming back here was a little tough.
As for manga, because the mental aspect greatly influences me (For me, it's about creating "stories," not for simply drawing pictures) I was somehow able to concentrate on drawing Arakan, but there was so much work to be done. (Somehow, I was also able to do the storyline for Sakura Gari, too, but still...)
...Well, because they're my own personal affairs, whatever I express won't change how disappointed the readers will be.
I'm really, really sorry."
Poor Watase. I hope things get better for her. Maybe by the time Viz catches up, she'll have started again.
Anyways, on my thoughts for GK, I prefer it to the original series. FY will always hold a special place in my heart, because it was one of the first manga I started reading when I was younger. Yet, while I was obsessed for a while, I started to drift away after Vol. 8 was released in America. There were several reasons for this: I came across other manga that were better, Tamahome and Miaka were getting annoying (breakup, makeup, rinse and repeat), and the story was frustrating. However, I did read some of the rest of the series (the parts that interested me), watched the OVAs and Eikoden just to satisfy my curiosity.
I was frustrated with the lack of development for the Seiryuu-seishi and how several were just shallow one-dimensional characters. But I disliked even more the lack of resolution for them. Which is why I liked the first three eps of the OVAs, if for no other reason than having Tomo, Nakago, Suboshi, and Amiboshi show up and having more resolution (especially since Suboshi was one of my favorite charas... ;_; ). It was like, they were destined to live miserable lives for being who they were and growing up where they grew up (Seiryuu being the God of War and Kutou constantly being at war), die, and then become completely forgotten. WTF? ... But, hey, who cares? The Suzaku-seishi win, get their personal issues resolved, get reborn, get to be with their loved ones in the end so it's all good and we have a happily ever after ending, yay! *strangles the air*
When I first heard about GK, I was reluctant to read it, but eventually did so (because I heard from a reliable source that it was more mature) and I'm glad I did. I really love the series and the characters, especially Takiko. Having a main character I like definitely helps. Back when I read FY, I preferred Yui to Miaka (both were flat, but at least Yui wasn't annoying in a genki way).
The thing about Takiko I like is her desire to be needed. Unlike Miaka, who just naturally has boundless amounts of willpower, love, and faith that's able to break all bonds and keep her going, Takiko crumbles when she's not needed or loved, which is very human. Her strength comes from confronting her own insecurities and finding the will to fight even when the world and her own doubts are fighting against her. Miaka never really had that level of complexity.
Of the 5 types of conflict that exists within stories (Man vs. Man, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Self, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. God/Fate), FY focused mostly on Man vs. Man conflict with others thrown in here and there. GK, on the other hand, focuses mostly on Man vs. Self (along with quite a bit of Man vs. Man as well), which IMHO is a lot more interesting.
Plus, Takiko can actually fight some and she isn't just a ditz. But I mainly love her for her humanity and her struggles with herself. True strength comes from overcoming your weaknesses, and I see GK as more of a coming-of-age story rather than a romance story: it's about characters overcoming their own weaknesses through the help of friendship and their own willpower. Romance is just thrown in as a pleasant bonus. ;D
Also, I'm preferring the Genbu-senshi to the Suzaku-senshi (holy crap, u mean I can haz moar than just pretti boiz?). Tamahome became annoying over time due to his constant back-and-forths with Miaka (Stop with the soap opera! We're in the middle of a war, there's enough drama without you two muddling it up with your stupidity). Mitsukake, who actually had depth and an interesting past, did not get enough screen time. Chiriko, who had the promise of being an interesting character, wasn't in the story long (last to arrive, third to die) and didn't have much screen time either. Wait a second, I'm sensing a trend here: we have two characters who don't get much screen time, who die relatively early, and who, strangely enough, are not of the prettyboi status. Coincidence? Well, gee, lemme think on it. Hotohori was okay but never really left an impression on me. I think the only ones I really liked were Nuriko, Chichiri, and Tasuki, and a lot of that was due to the OVAs/last chapters of the manga when you find out in depth about Nuriko and Chichiri's pasts and see Tasuki's struggles. I have nothing to complain about yet for the Genbu-seishi.
Overall, GK feels deeper and more complex than the original (more grey areas rather than just simple good vs. evil, love vs. war). Watase had aspects of this in the original FY; however, not as much. This along with the seriousness of the storyline and the internal conflict of the characters shows how she has matured, so I have hope for this new series.
It's not that I hate the original, not at all. It will always have a special place in my heart. I just prefer GK.
As for predictions as to what's to come, I'm hiding it behind a spoiler tag. Don't read if you haven't read up to chapter 31 yet.
Okay, with the end of chapter 31, I'm wondering whether or not Rimudo will try to force himself on Takiko. I have a feeling that if he finds out about the "purity of the priestess" (if he doesn't already know) he might try to do so in order to save her. He seems willing to sacrifice his (and hers, consequently) happiness as long as she's alive. Therefore, he might push the issue.
As for someone pointing out the earthquake thing, I can so see that (her summoning Genbu ends up affecting her world much like Yui summoning Seiryuu had)! Thank you for pointing it out!
My predictions: Rimudo is probably going to die, which will shake Takiko greatly. Her strength comes from being needed and loved, and so her foundation will crack every time someone dies. Therefore, while she is strong, I don't think she'll have the will to stop Genbu from devouring her (hey, she's dying anyways, she's losing those she loves, what purpose does she have after summoning Genbu and saving her people?) She'll make two wishes, one to save her people, and the other... I'm not so sure. To return home? Her father will end up killing her at some point after the second wish in an act of mercy. I can't see her being able to make the third wish, because at that point, the priestess completely disappears as with Yui.
Of course, her father killing her and then himself could be a lie. It'd be cool if she makes the third wish, is devoured, but then somehow comes back on her own will... maybe meeting Rimudo in the afterlife/inside Genbu/whatever the heck happens after one is devoured and she gains the will to fight again from him. Anyways, as for tragedy, death itself is not a tragedy. The FY world has shown us life after death, therefore, I see death on Takiko's part as a release, such as with Susano. She won't get the happy ending that Miaka did, but neither do I see her getting a completely tragic ending either.
So, I guess, overall I'm excited about the series, and I can't wait to see what happens after Watase gets back to it!

Perhaps the reason why FY: Genbu Kaiden is deeper and more complex is because Yuu Watase herself has had a deeper and more complex life since she has been creating it. We already know this story is supposed to end tragic. I really hope the shining beacon at the end of this story would be Suzuno's story herself which is destined to have a completely oppposite fate than that of Takiko.
Thanks Willag for the update to what YW has been doing as of late!! I have to feel bad for her too, I hope her mother and family life gets better. I only hope her issues could be resolved.
I still haven't picked up vol.8 of FY:GK to give my thoughts on it. It's been really tough financially for me as of late as I have to take care of my priorities.

I finally got my hands on Fushii Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 8 and vol. 9 after soo long. I have to say, I found many parallels between this story and the original FY on how love and emotions overtake both Miaka's and Takiko's situation. Still, these are two entirely different stories who with protoganists who have entirely different personalities. Still, I fould it nostalgic how Takiko's love for Limdo closely related to Suzaku's story. In Genbu Kaiden, the celestial warriors also step up and try to protect Takiko after they find out her sad fate as a Priestess of Genbu. I loved the part where Einosuke Okuda could do nothing to destroy the Universe of the Four Gods as the story is still ongoing and is waiting for the Priestess of Genbu's story to come to a close. The end of vol. 9 really ended with a cliffhanger. Will Urumiya team up with the rest of the Genbu seishi, only time will tell. This is all I will say, so If you're interested, read the manga. I'm surprised this series hasn't been discussed more in the last several months. I would highly recommend FY: Genbu Kaiden if you loved the original FY.
In Yuu Watase's columns, she revealed that she will keep on working on FY: GK but at a slower pace so she could push out her newest manga series, Sakura Gari. She may also have plans to create a Byakko story arc of the FY in the future, probably after the conclusion of the Genbu arc.
Unfortuately, there have been no more Pefect World magazines since vol. 14. We currently have have up to chapter 31 of the manga. In YW's column, she said she was already working on vol. 10. I can't wait until it gets released!! Hopefully early next year!!

I LOVE FY:GK. It's definitely my most favorite manga. It has better artwork, better characters, better heroine - everything.
I'm psyched to hear that Watase-san is already working on Vol. 10! Thanks a lot for the info, Athena-san. Also, I've been thinking if Rimudo would force himself on Takiko, too. I really hope he doesn't. :( Because then it would be like raping her, won't it? I don't think he can do such a thing to Takiko, even if he's doing it to save her...
I just hope they'll be together happily in the end. *is a massive fangirl of Rimudo x Takiko* <3

I don't think Yuu Watase would do such a thing to her characters, especially if its one of the favorite members of the Genbu seishi. Rimudo does have a deep affection for Takiko to really mean he loves her. On the other hand, knowing Takiko has to be a virgin for her to summon Genbu-seikun, Rimudo might be trying to save Takiko's life by trying for force himself on her too. That vol. 9 ending definitely ended with a cliffhanger, but I have a feeling that something will immediately stop him from having sex with her in vol. 10, otherwise the story wouldn't go on. This is my opinion of course. Watase-sama and her cliffhangers... -_-;

I can't wait! Counting down to June; 49 days ladies. As far as Chapter 32 predictions, go
I'm guessing either Rimudo will get guilty and pull back, or Inami will get a feeling that he might try something and totally interrupt. :P
XD I actually had a weird dream about this last night, in which they both did it, everyone was pissed and they were like "oh well, it was awesome!" lmao. Yeahhh I'm dying for the next volume. <_<

Ahh, poor Watase-sensei. I didn't know her personal life was so stressful while she was writing/drawing the last few volumes of Genbu Kaiden. As much as I love her work and want to see resolution for GK in the near future, I really would rather she deal with her personal life first. If her heart's not in her creation, then we as the readers just aren't going to enjoy it. (Well, we probably would because we all seem to be big GK fans -- but why settle for merely okay or just good when you could have GREAT? When GK comes back, I want it to be the best work Watase-sensei can muster. After all, she's had this story in her head for over a decade, so I want her to do her work justice no matter how long it takes -- and, if that means waiting a few more years to read the ending, then so be it. I won't LIKE having to wait, but it is what it is.)
(Also, if Rimudo DOES try to do *that* with Takiko, I will be a bit disappointed in him since doing so could end up marring Takiko's trust in him. :( I know he wants to save her and protect her, but really -- don't be impulsive, Uruki!!)

I'm sorry to say but there still hasn't been any information on the continuation of FY: Genbu Kaiden as of the end of this year. With that said, there will be no vol. 10 for the forseeable future. Ever since her Perfect World publication ceased production, she's had to move on and work on her other manga series in other publications. For instance, she's been working on Sakura-Gari and a new shounen series called Arata Kangatari on a new publication in a weekly magazine called Shonen Sunday ever since. This series has been ongoing (currently up to vol. 4) released by VIZ media in the US.
According to ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-03-17/fushigi-yuugi/genbu-kaiden-return-pushed-to-spring-2010) posted almost 2 years ago, she's appologized for the continued delay of FY: Genbu Kaiden and has asked for our patience and understanding. I really hope the series continues. For now all we can do is wait. :(

The last I have heard is that she already started working on FY: Genbu Kaiden again. It is currently being serialized in RINKA. I think she is going slowly, so there is no sign of volume 10 yet. Sakura-Gari has already ended and it was serialized in the same magazine.
Arata Kangatari is still being serialized in Shonen Sunday and volume 9 just came out in Japan.

I like this sooo much more than FY.
I thought I read somewhere years ago, that Watase also wanted to do something on the other miko who was involved?
and whose name I can't remember at the moment...Suzume maybe? It started with an S.
I just remember at one point in FY: *spoiled for those who didn't read it*

That was Suzuno, priestess of Byakko. I would love to see her story retold. It would essentially complete the saga of Fushigi Yuugi and the story of the Universe of the Four Gods would be complete.
I can see why FY: Genbu Kaiden would be popular among people who didn't like the original FY because Takiko was so much different than Miaka. I loved the original Fushigi Yuugi myself. I saw qualities in Miaka that were often overshadowed by her personality. For one, her strong will to care for her celestial warriors show how strong of a character she really was and it shows by the popularity of the series itself. You can't forget the Suzaku seishi. They were memorable in their own right.

The guardian of Byakko was actually a White Tiger. It is one of the four symbols of the Chinese constellations considered to be the White Tiger of the West (Genbu - Black Tortuse of the North, Seiryu - Blue Dragon of the East, and Suzaku - Fire Bird of the South). It would be interesting to see how FY: Genbu Kaiden will tie in to this story. At some point Takiko and Suzuno will cross paths in the story. I really hope Yuu Watase can release new FY: Genbu Kaiden soon.

I do believe my original post in this thread was my first post on the forums. Wow, how long it's been!
So, as for an update, no, Genbu Kaiden is not dead. Chapter 33 was released in October in Japan, and a translation/scanlation was released in November. It was about a 60+ page release, so at least it was worth the wait. And Chapter 34 is due out on February 13th. GK is being released on a 4/5 month schedule.
I thought I read somewhere that the series is winding down and should be over with soon (just a few more tankoubon or something). Like many others, I'm hoping for an eventual anime. If there is one, however, I hope it's held off until the manga is complete - I can wait until then. :)
Also, Yuu Watase posted a GK quiz on her website. If you get over 80% correct, you can download a wallpaper of each of the Genbu seishi as well as Takiko: http://www.y-watase.com/special/genbu/genbukentei/quiz01.html
Someone translated the quiz and put the answers here: http://shikitan.livejournal.com/1440.html

There have been some reports of manga stores posted in Japan that Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden vol. 10 is out in the market but no ISBN is currently out for it. It is unknown if it has actually been released or if websites have posted for it in advance. It would make sense because chapters 32-34 are now serialized in Rinka magazine, a new location were Yuu Watase's stories are being published. Lets keep our fingers crossed for more information on this. I'm optimistic that we will see something soon.

Well, the cover for volume ten is out there in the wild, but a few Japanese sites are sending mixed signals as far as stock of the volume goes. One site said the release was back in June while another one says the release was moved back to February 2012. Either way, the next volume of FY:GK will hopefully be out on U.S. shores by fall 2012. It's going to be interesting to see how Yuu Watase ends things so that they line up with what was shown in the original series.
