Mr Gundam

What are your top 5 favorite RPGs of all time? Ones that you would put above all the others for whatever reasons. Here would be mine.
1) Final Fantasy IV (Super Nintendo/Playstation)
2) Xenogears (Playstation)
3) Lunar 2 Eternal Blue (Playstation)
4) Final Fantasy VII (Playstation)
5) Final Fantasy VI (Super Nintendo/Playstation)
Ok, you might be looking at the Final Fantasy IV and VI and going, "WTF?!" o_O Anyways....
Final Fantasy IV was one of my first RPGs ever, which I first played around 1992. Sure, it's an old 1990 game that originally came out on the Super NES, but for some reason I just love it. It's simple, yet addictive. I love the soundtrack to it by the way and it has the most replay value of any other RPG I've ever played, considering I've beaten it I think five times since I first played it. Beat it three times on the Super NES and then beat it twice when it was re-released for Playstation.
Xenogears was one of the most unique RPGs I've ever played. An awesome story, great soundtrack, and the ever unique "Gears" added something special to this game that more than made up for it's graphics. I've beaten it three times through all the way and actually got everyone in my party up to Lv 90 on my last time playing and my Fei at Lv 99.
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue was a great RPG. Great characters, great story, great in-game anime sequences, and a great soundtrack made this a very enjoyable game for me, even if the graphics aren't the best, though I actually don't have a problem with the game's graphics.
Final Fantasy VII, probably what some people would call one of the most overrated RPGs ever. I really enjoyed it. Nice soundtrack and it was a pretty addictive game. Like Xenogears, I beat it three times through all the way and on my third time playing it, I accomplished what I never though I would have done and defeated Ruby Weapon along with Emerald Weapon. I also leveled up everyone to their max levels.
Now with Final Fantasy VI, this was the 2nd RPG I had ever played, which was back in like 1994. After I had gotten a taste of FFIV, I went into this game and was surprised with how much I enjoyed it. It had more of a dark story compared to FFIV and definitely had more interesting characters. Of course I was also surprised when I first started playing how much longer the game was compared to FFIV. Overall, a very enjoyable RPG with a good soundtrack. I beat it once on SNES and played it through twice on it's re-release for Playstation and beat it both times.

1. Final Fantasy VI.
2. Persona 2, Eternal Punishment.
3. Shadowrun (SNES).
4. Valkyrie Profile.
5. Neverwinter Nights.
It's nearly 4 in the morning, so I'm sure I've forgot a big one that I'd kick myself for forgetting.

Heh heh, Now were talking,
Ok for my list, it would have to go like this
5) Legend of Dragoon (Playstation)
4) Chrono Trigger (SNES)
3) Final Fantasy 6 (SNES)
2) Final Fantasy 7 (Playstation)
1) Xenogears (Playstation)
5) Legend of dragoon was such a sleeper’s hit that I couldn't have put it on my list. The first thing with this game is the outstanding battle mode you have in this game. The combo’s were so hard it made combat fun and challenging (and I do mean challenging, I cried a few times cuz’ I couldn’t master a combo) and the dragoon mode which made battle interesting and strategic. The story wasn’t a slouch either, This is one of few RPG’s that made me *gasp* in wonder. And it has one of the best party member death in any RPG I've ever played.
4) What can I say about Chrono Trigger, How about the first US RPG that brought me into the land of RPG. The story wasn’t the most thought provoking I've ever played but I was very good, plus it had time travel, god I'm a sucker for time travel. also I was a huge DBZ fan back then and the art of Akira Toriyama really drew me in :D.
3) It’s Final Fantasy, that's all I have to say. :P j/k, nah seriously though I love this FF just because it was Sooooooooooo long with a great story and sound track and since I wasn’t really an RPG vet. Back then I think this game took me just under 6 MONTHS to beat it.....I know I suck. :P
2) *Sigh* What can I say about FF7 that would do this game justice.... First how about the characters, Cloud was such an interesting fellow that even if you hate this game you have to like him. Second the story. When you start to go farther in the game you question a lot of things that you yourself don’t really grasp, third, The Limit Breaks (Can you all remember how cool the Omni-Slash was, I know I can) and last the music...I still have the battle music on my MP3 player to this date.
1) God what can I say about Xenogears, this thought provoking masterpiece that I found myself crying at few parts (Elly’s mother scene). Ok to start this out Xenogears by retrospect is the best RPG Ever *coughimocough* It had every thing you ever wanted that I honestly don’t think I could get into at this time, My only problem with this was the lackluster second disk ( I write more tomorrow, to late now).
RPG’s that was close but no cigar as they say;
-Final Fantasy 9 (Very good in the middle and the end, The begging is what messes this title up)
-Vagrent Story (I’m sure it’d been in my top 5, If only I could beat it)
-Star Ocean -PSX- (See Vagrent Story)
-Chrono Cross (To many Characters)

I feel your PAIN :(
I just don't understand it, I know I couldn't finish Vagrent Story, It was too complicated and I just didn't have the time or patience too put in this game (I got this post PS2 era, so I had better games to play) but I just don't know why I couln't beat Star Ocean, Come on, my characters levels were way over 120+ and that final boss owned my a$$ everytime I fought him. Before I die I have too finish that game.....:ssj:

I'll try to put them in order:
1) Final Fantasy VI- Best FF game ever. I'm now playing it for the second time. Still challenging, still fun, still the best. Kefka is not as one-sided as previous FF villains, although not as complex as Sephiroth either.
2) Zelda II: The Adventure of Link- This was my favorite video game of my childhood and teens. It is still by far my favorite of the Zelda games. I wish they would make another RPG style Zelda game.
3) Chrono Trigger/Cross- I'm putting them together. At times I may have been frustrated at a certain point, but once I managed to beat it, it was worth it.
4) Legend of Dragoon- Again, another underrated RPG. Awesome characters. Mastering the combos was tough- especially getting them at the right time.
5) MKR and SM RPGs for the SNES. Hehehe, guilty pleasures.
I have liked most Final Fantasy games I have played, so I just put my favorite.

Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Cross

Xenogears
Final Fantasy VII

My list would probably consist of this:
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. The Legend of the Dragoons
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Final Fantasy IV
5. Breath of Fire II
Although I find it very hard to number these…
Final Fantasy VI was a great game, so great that it is hard for me to explain how much I liked about it.
The Legend of the Dragoons was a fun game, one I can still play today. It had many interesting characters and the plot of the story [like most RPG’s] was interesting, well thought out and drew me in to keep playing. The battle conduct and skills were fun although many were hard to use and master.
Chrono Trigger was a game I just couldn’t put down and to this day one part in the game, one part that annoyed me so much. I just couldn’t chase and catch the rat…
Final Fantasy IV was a game that had characters I could love to death.
Breath of Fire II was my first RPG I ever played and I absolutely adored it, and the characters. It characters were pretty interesting and each rather different with their own skills yet strikingly different. I wish I could still play this one… but long around the evil being known as my mother sold it…

1. Suikoden II
2. Final Fantasy VII
3. Seiken Densetsu 3
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Seiken Densetsu 2
The first and second were hardest to decide, which one is better, but IMO its Suikoden II. Fantastic game play, wonderful characters and lovely music.

2) Lunar the Silver Star (Sega CD version, Story was too easy)
3) *reserved for Grandia III*
4) Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
5) Phantasy Star II (IV was too easy)
Special shouts to the Ys series and the Soulblazer series (much love for Illusion of Gaia). Oh, and Panzer Dragoon Saga, which some day I will finish. Hell, special love for every Saturn RPG.

3. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
4. Tales of Symphonia
5. Chrono Cross
Yes, Chrono Cross, not Chrono Trigger. CT is a great game, of course, but I have to admit that the plot of CC appealed to me more. I always enjoy plots dealing with inter-dimensional travel. Disgaea and FF Tactics deserve honorable mentions as well, but I wanted to keep the list limited to traditional RPGs.

Its cool to hate on RPGs now. Its easy to as well. The really popular ones are static and predictable, the "hardcore" ones simply adhere to a different formula, and a few real gems fall through the cracks.
But what do you expect, you're at a forum for anime. Most of the people here couldn't play a fighting game well to save their life (yes, I went there).

1. Lunar 2 - By far my favorite RPG series of all time. Not only because it was one of the first I ever played when I first got into videogames, but it's anime style cutscenes got me into anime in the first place. The characters were memorable, the music was lovely, and the battle system was relatively easy. Just an easy RPG game to get into and enjoy. I enjoy every minute of its included soundtrack.
2. Grandia 2 - Next to my SNK games, this was most definitely one of my favorite Dreamcast games. The characters here were memorable as well, the music was outstanding. I loved it so much I bought the original OST just for it. The graphics were just as great, and the battle system was unique. This was definitely my favorite of the newest RPG's ever made.
3. Chrono Trigger - I loved the animation so much mainly because they are Akira Toriyama's drawings, but the characters and music were just as great as well. I loved the whole concept of time travel to beat parts of the game, and that added a certain flair of uniqueness to this game. I also enjoy hearing the original OST of this series too.
4. Skies of Arcadia - Also one of my favorite of the newest RPG games ever made. I loved the whole concept of traveling to explore distant lands as air pirates and visiting floating islands with different themes and cultures from around the world. This game had so many memorable characters everywhere and it certainly was unique compared to other RPG games I've played.
5. Grandia 1 - By far, this original Grandia game is still so enjoyable to play. For a Playstation game, it really delivered the best it could. As old as this may be, I love the characters, the battle system, the music, and most of all the story of this game (more so than it's sequal). Also, Feena was my favorite character in the series, and I'm using an avvie just for her.

There are a lot of others in whichthere were some good aspects, but other aspects were it's downfall(ie. good story line, bad graphics...good story, characters, horrible voice overs),etc.
Also, I predict FFXII will be one of the greats! :)

Ok now to write what made Xenogears maybe the best RPG ever made.
First the great characters. Each character had some valid reason for doing what their doing, from Bart the prince/king of his land to the gun slinging Baptist Billy, each had their own personality that made them, them and maybe the best main character in any RPG, Fei Fong Wong how was more than saving the world for him but uncovering what made him, him.
As for the story, I couldn't believe this epic was on only two disk, so much religious text was almost baffling at times. next the soundtrack was awesome, From the BGM, to the final song in the game. Next was the battle mode in it, Next to LoD, This has the best battle in any RPG I've ever played. and Finally, any game that has CG and Anime FMV’s is all right with me.
My only complaint was the lackluster second disk that was a little boring at time’s (When Fei and Elly sat in a chair and told a story of what they did, I always thought I should be doing those stuff) and made it just a simple button masher just to get through the heavy dialogue. Other than that it was my favorite RPG ever. I always thought if you wanted to compare a game with Evangelion, Xenogears was it.

2. Xenosaga: Dur Wille Zer Macht - Kewl
3. Kingdom Hearts - Not as plot-heavy, but fun
4. Dungeon Siege: LOA - Very addicting.
5. Various MUDs: I enjoy MUDs. They're free and often better than games with graphics.

#5 - Chrono Cross. This game gets REALLY difficult halfway through (with having to beat six dragons and all) but with the new game plus feature, you can't really go wrong. Lots of stuff to collect and weapons to make, keeps this game in my library for a long time.
#4 - Legend of Dragoon. With this one, either you loved it or you hated it. I loved it. I liked the press-the-button-at-the-right-time battle system. It would've been more interesting if it were more than just the X button, though. While it's a little too linear for repeated play, it's a fun one to pick up every now and again.
#3 - Final Fantasy 7. What really defined me as an RPG gamer back in my day. I'm aware of all the other FF's before it, but they just didn't suck me in like this one did. I liked most of the cast, and the music is supreme.
#2 - Star Ocean 2. So non-linear, so deep, so many characters. The VO is bad, but I've heard worse (believe it or not). I love all that you can do with this game, and has so much replay value, it's insane. All it needs is a slightly better soundtrack (though what it has is good), and a New Game Plus mode, and it'd be perfect.
#1 - Xenogears. It's been said a million times, and with good cause. This game has everything (though I could do with better music). While not utterly perfect in mine eyes, it is indisputably my favorite RPG.
Honorable Mentions: Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. Not really RPGs, as they're more SRPGs, which I put in a different genre.

My favorite RPG's are:
1. Star wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2- I'm a star wars fan and both games have an excellent story and who wouldn't want to be a Jedi Knight and they both have won a lot of awards.
2. Diablo 1 and 2- You can be a warrior, paladin, assasin, necromancer, amazon, rogue both have an excellent story and have one a lot of awards for game of the year.
I don't play games that much anymore to busy watching anime. I know the thread is top 5 but I have only played those two rpgs. Since both games have sequels I didn't count them separetly(spelliing).

I really don't play many RPGs outside of the Squaresoft realm.
Favorites are...
1. Final Fantasy VIII - Not only my favorite RPG, but also my favorite video game. This was the first video game that really showed me how powerful video games could be. I was sucked into the characters, plot, and the entire world almost immediately.
2. Knights of the Old Republic - Since I am a huge Star Wars fan, this gem was a real treat to play. The gameplay was alright, the plot was excellent, and, of course, you get to be a badass Jedi.
3. Kingdom Hearts - Fun. Fun, fun, and more fun. That is all that needs to be said.
4. Chrono Trigger - I first played this on the Playstation with the remake. Even thought I was used to 3d graphics, I still greatly enjoyed it.
Number 5 tends to be a mix of Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy VII.

5. Lufia 2
I don't think I've ever had as much fun with a game as I did with Disgaea. It spoiled me, in a weird way, because I find myself wishing that most rpgs I play now were more like Disgaea.
Final Fantasy VI is probably the reason that I'm a gamer. Like most people, I grew up playing video games, and I liked them a lot, but Final Fantasy VI is what made me fall in love with them. I'd never imagined that I could get so attached to characters, or so into a story.
I first played Chrono Trigger years and years ago, and there's still lots of stuff in the game (like endings!) I haven't experienced yet.
There's nothing else like Earthbound. It's the weirdest rpg I've ever played, and I adore it.
There were so many great rpgs on the SNES, and I think Lufia 2 gets forgotten sometimes. The characters and the story were wonderful, and it was extremely challenging.

1. Thief Gold
2. Ultima IV
3. Deus Ex
4. Wing Commander (Heart Of The Tiger?)
5. Planetfall

Of the ones I have listed, only Ultima IV is probably what most people today consider an RPG. The rest are games where I'd say you play the lead protagonist. But all of them have a certain amount of flexibility in how you play the game, character development, different ways for the plots to unfold, etc. Those are the traditional elements of RPG's are they not? I mean, if you go back to the RPG predecessors, isn't that all D&D is? You play your characters within a narrative structure in such a way as to accomplish the goals set by the game?
Deus Ex was a first-person game (not *just* a shooter), but you did develop the character over the course of the game. Basically, the game shaped itself around the way you played your character. You could play it like you were the Terminator, or you could make your character the embodiment of stealth - your choice. Many of the choices you made permanently affected the game state. I view that as role playing, no matter how the game is marketed. Same with Thief, which is more like an extended D&D campaign than most games I've played.
Of course, like most of the first-person plot-oriented games, the gameplay in Deus Ex and Thief was fairly linear in terms of the major plot elements. There were variations, but ultimately you could only break the plot so far before it forced you in the right direction.
Wing Commander had what I'd call Cutscene & Options role-play. You were a specific character (Blair), but how you interacted with the crew affected what information was returned, what plot elements came up, how the story unfolded, etc. Same with the results of your missions (which were flight & dogfight sequences). It wasn't a purely linear plot structure. In fact, if I recall correctly, it was possible (a bug) to maintain the game's balance in a neverending plot loop.
I suppose it could be said that cutscene character development isn't real character development, but given how cheesy and artifical some of these console games 'develop' characters (some of them look like no more than an open-map version of Super Mario to me, quite honestly), I have to think it counts in this context. Part of this might be due to the input limitations of a standard game controller - I mean, there are definitely limitations to how detailed one can 'play a role' when all you can select are push-button options? I'll never give up gaming on my PC, personally.
Ultimately, isn't any game in which you don't play yourself considered a form of 'role play', by definition? You're playing a role, after all.

That is why the RPG genre has a few general guidelines. In my opinion, these "rules" are essential for a game to be considered an RPG.
A) Your characters fight and gain experience
B) Your characters are in a traditional "level up" system very similar to DnD
Granted you are technically correct, but guidelines are set so as to distingush Final Fantasy from Half-Life.

Okay, so by those standards, Deus Ex definitely qualifies, as do many instances of interactive fiction, but WC is more of a guided narrative. Fair enough.
I'm not trying to offend anyone. I guess this is just another one of those areas where I don't personally a meaningful distinction. It's like the whole anime/cartoons thing, I guess. For me, Thief plays like a D&D campaign, so for me, it's as much of an RPG as D&D is.
As for Half-Life - I haven't played the sequel, but I know that the original was NOT what I'd call role-playing. The game was brilliant in the way it gave the illusion of being an open narrative, but it was one of the most relentlessly linear games ever made. Nothing you did affected your character or anything else in the game. You made the choices as they were presented, and you usually solved problems in the only way they could be solved. It was more of an arcade game with a cool perspective, I'd say. But that's me.
Sorry if this is a rehash of a common argument, everyone. My bad.

My input, which includes Zelda which is arguably not an RPG but an action/rpg, pardon me, and also includes some strategy rpg:
1.) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2.) Tales of Symphonia
3.) Kingdom Hearts
4.) Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
5.) Golden Sun
i didnt include FF cause it already gets enough credit, not that im not a fan...

Hmmm...
1. Super Mario RPG (A given... best battle system, best characters, and humor to boot!)
2. Chrono Cross (The atmosphere of the game was perfect... and the story and music were fabuloso)
In no particular order from here on out
Earthbound (Playing it recently made me realize how much I love the game. Great sense of humor and it truly has nostalgia written all over it, which despite what many people will say, DOES account for something)
Final Fantasy X (I don't care what you bias say, I thought the story and atmosphere were fantastic. And I very much enjoyed the battle system. Just to note, I refuse to ever play FFX-2)
Xenogears (I've said it so many damned times in the past... but the end of Disc 1 is the best videogame ever. So wonderfully paced, great music, and the story is great. As for the rest of the game, it was pretty good I guess)
Final Fantasy 6 (Not much to say that hasn't been said before about the game, but I will say that the main characters, save a few exceptions, were some of the most well developed characters in RPG history. And that counts for ALOT)
Pokemon Leaf Green (Pokemon Blue is like.. the best handheld game ever, and the slight tiny little improvements in Leaf Green put it over the top. So sue me. I think the game kicks the tires)
Clearly I didn't take Action-RPGs into account on this thing, and I'm not too big of a fan of Strat-RPGs

I'm slightly surprised at the lack of Suikoden inclusion on these lists, but I'm assuming its more from lack of playing. Nearly everyone I know who's at least played Suikoden II includes it in their top 5 gaming list. What I'm not surprised on is the amount of Final Fantasy inclusion, even though the FF games aren't even Square's best games. Ah well, to each their own, I suppose. My list would go as follows:
Suikoden II
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Wild Arms 3
I would also like to give an honorable mention to Legend of Dragoon. This poor game gets hated on an awful lot and I just don't see why. It was very fun, I enjoyed the combo battle system, made it a lot more interactive than the standard "select attack, sit back and let the computer hit or miss the enemy". Sure, it's not gonna take home awards for big time originality, but then again, neither does the vaunted FF 7.

I can't believe only 4 people mentioned Suikoden II and only one listed Suikoden I. These two games are classics, expecially at a time when actual sequels to RPG games are a rarity. I suggest anyone who hasn't played SI and II to pick it up somewhere (both games sell up to a combined $200 on Ebay, with SII going over $130 and SI going for around $70.) This is the reason why I hate FFVII so much, becuase it outshadowed Suikoden, a game FAR superior than FFVII (except graphics at the time, obviously.) Anyway:
1. Suikoden I and II combined: The story for both connects, and it's the second game is set 3 years after the first. Not to mention a plethora of characters show up again for a second time. Regardless, The Suikoden series will never get the attention it deserves due to being overshadowed by FFVII and a weak fourth installment (SIV started out great, ended horribly, here's to Suikoden Tactics fixing all the bad that happened with SIV.) Anyway, it's my favorite RPG of all time becuase it's original. Seriously, 108 characters? Your army has a fraking home base in the middle of the lake (in which it's really fun seeing your HQ evolve as you recruit more characters)? The story in these games are amazing. I'd give a sypnosis, but I don't want to spoil anyone.
2. Chrono Trigger: yet another very original game. The concept of time travel and how it affects the future is a great concept.
3. Super Mario RPG: Mario and Bowser on the same team. Enough said.
4. Wild Arms: yet another game overshadowed by FFVII. From the gorgeus anime opening to the AMAZING emotional ending. I'd write more, but I suggest you guys go pick up the "remake" coming out in the fall called Wild Arms: Alter Code F
5. Xenogears: nothing more I can add to what you guys said already. All I can say is, Xenogears is the Evangelion equivalent in RPG games.
Other good RPG worth mentioning:
Final Fantasy Tactics, Vandal Hearts I and II, Alundra (this game could have had the potential of Zelda...,) The Tales series', Grandia II, DRAGON QUEST.

Wild Arms was a wonderful game. I never beat it because I got to the end of the game and my memory card went kaput. I'm looking foward to the remake, whenever it finally comes out. It better not mess with the story. Adding characters is fine, but I hope they keep the story a close to the original as possible.

2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: Great series, it's Zelda for gawd's sake.
3. Star Ocean 2: Fun, fun, fun and such great characters. It wasn't like the RPG I was playing before with the Private Action system and stuff which really distinguish itself to me.
4. Grandia 2: Made me question my religion, Nuff said. And loved those inn scenes.
5. Final Fantasy 7: Still my favorite FF in the series. Great and memorable characters and the plot twist which affects everyone who played the game.

There's no way I could possibly pick 5...but I'll try.
1.) Chrono Trigger: Classic. No further explanation needed.
2.) Valkyrie Profile: As a fan of Norse Mythology, I couldn't help but absolutely adore this game. With it's beautifully designed sprites and unique battle system, Valkyrie Profile dug a permanent place in my heart.
3.) Chrono Cross: How many playable characters were there again? Chrono Cross probably contained my favorite characters ever. Accompanied by these awesome characters was a fun battle system and breathtaking soundtrack. "Yellow, Red, Green, Blue, Black, White" will forever remain in my memories.
4.) Final Fantasy VI: Old, yes, but full of absolute win. Out of all the Final Fantasy games, FFVI was the only one to fully grasp the one thing I care the most about: the story. No FF story has ever grabbed my full attention like FFVI did. "O, Maria!"
5.) Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria: Despite my hatred for Rufus and disappointment with the new battle system, I couldn't help but love VP2. Silmeria was able to maintain the same feel as the first game while delivering absolutely gorgeous graphics. Not only that, but Michelle Ruff voiced the main character! [/michellerufffanboyism]

You people should be ashamed of yourselves, I don't think I saw one person mention The Elder Scrolls Oblivion or Morrowind.
That's because The Elder Scrolls and best RPG don't belong in the same sentense. I don't care how pretty they look, or if they were voted RPG of the year.

That's because I don't have 360 and I hardly play PC games.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion reminds me of an elaborated Wolfenstein. I hated the game. I dont care about the game mechanics but if I have to see something with such bad looking gameplay ever again I think I'l throw up.

Well, from a technical standpoint I can see how much care was put into Oblivion. But it's just a different type all together that won't crossover to people who have acquired a taste for JRPGs. I want to like it, but can't get into it myself. The character designs are a huge killer. Guess I prefer the more anime-esque ones.

Obviously you're looking for japanese sympathy because that game is not popular anywhere but in Japan. xD Not to mention it plain ol' sucks. I could probably develope that game with one eye.
1 NEBILIM DEALS ONE DAMAGE TO SLIME 2.
SLIME 2 WHACKS NEBILIM 1 FOR 234324 DAMAGE.
YOU OBTAIL A LOSS IN YOUR RECORDS.
AN ELF CARRIES YOU OFF ON STRETCHER.
GAME OVER.

I wouldnt know if it did good, but I know I really hate it, and it could probably be made on RPG Maker.

I understand hating on Baten Kaitos, but DQVIII? That game was pretty damn good. Large world to explore, nice that you can grow your characters in multiple directions, and the production values were pretty solid. Nice that there's a few RPGs on the PS2 that zoomed a little on load times. If anything, his list is too GCN centric. 2 out of 5 greatest RPGs ever from the GCN? The GCN was an AWFUL system for RPGs. Noone can even argue that.

Its simpler than Earth Bound. o.O

i thought pokemon came out like 1996? FF3 is like 20 years old right? can you name me some rpgs better than the ones i listed cause they must be pretty damn good if theyre better than the ones i listed

FF3 DS was only made this year. There was no previous counterpart. It is an original game. People argue that it has a counterpart but it's more like.. a watered down FF5.
Also; I listed them. Need I quote it?

i thought it was a remake of a game that came out only is japan 20 years ago. yes quote
Len

Yes, remake is exactly what it is. The only thing they kept was the map and some of the place names. The entire game is different other than that.

Large world to explore, nice that you can grow your characters in multiple directions, and the production values were pretty solid.
A large empty world where it takes forever to explore thanks to the ridiculous rate of random encounters. As for developing characters in multiple directions, they all had the same skills with different names. This one hits for a lot, this one gets a critical(if it hits), this one kills metal creatures, etc etc. The production values(I'm guessing you mean graphics and music) were pretty solid but that's about all it had going for it.
dude baten kaitos ruled. TOS was awesome but i havent played that many other rpgs than those i listed. and FF3 DS. and pokemon
That pretty much sums it up. You have to play more than a few RPGs to know what the genre is like, and DQVIII is not it.
can you name me some rpgs better than the ones i listed cause they must be pretty damn good if theyre better than the ones i listed
 @ u
No seriously, here you go. Someone did it way better than me in another thread:
ok some games <__<
Atelier Iris (1&2)
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Radiata Stories (this game rocks)
Kingdom Hearts (1&2)
Dark Cloud 2
Xenosaga (the 2nd one isn't that good though)
Shadow Hearts
Tactics RPGs
Disgaea
Disgaea 2
La Pucelle
Makai Kingdom
Phantom Brave
and since you can play PS1 games on the PS2
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy anthology (ffV & FFVI)
Final Fantasy chronicles (FFIV & Chrono Trigger)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Star Ocean the second story (This one is incredible but expencive)
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
Vagrant Story
Breath of Fire (3 & 4)
I don't know about Breath of Fire 4 on that list, but everything else looks solid. That is from a Playstation 2 thread, so that excludes RPGs that were on other systems. I think that's a good starting point.
ok i played tales of the abyss and beat it. i never heard of the rest except FFVI and i dont want it
I guess you can ignore one of the best RPGs of all time then.

Well...it's in pink. I've never really been afraid of anything pink before. :P Just kidding.
Your list was good too, sorry if you thought I was brushing it aside.
Edit- And for the record that isn't my list as you can see in the quote. It's just that it had a lot of awesome concentrated in one post. Plus anyone who puts the Atelier Iris games in such a list deserves to quoted.

I just noticed this post now.
The better question would be what did you like about DQVIII. Also it is very easy to find everything on both mine(I think this is still the wrong way to say it) and Nebilim's lists. I'm not going to point out where because I don't know AN's stance on those things.
