Like the title is asking...do you remeber when you first got into japanese animation for the first time in your life? or how long you have been into anime yourself?
I think I really started to get into anime about a year and 3 months ago. Right after I finished going to this convention I have been going to for the past 3 years. Thats when the anime buzz really hit me and I could not get enough of it ^^. Before then I was soso into anime, like I collected manga but only like a few, 5-10. Now Im full blown into anime and love it just as much.....except....really expensive ^^.

I started getting into Anime about the same time I started Drawing which was about 8 years old (17 going to 18 now) and I didn't appriciate it like now but those were good times. I think the first anime I watched was DBZ, SailorMoon and Transformers. I remembered it came on channel 11 and about 5:00 am (This was hard for my young weak body :D) and I had to wake up this early every day just to view anime i've come to love and appriciate so.

At age 9 in in the summer of '98, CN aired the first season of Sailor Moon and I was obsessed. To this day, Sailor Moon is my favorite series as it never gets old because there's is so much of it.

I've always been a fan (by always I mean since about 7 or 8) but I only became a collecter not to long ago. Anime is an expensive habit! I have friends who spend less on POT than I do on anime...and that is incredible. I am so happy I spend my money on something worth it instead of drugs.
I don't remember who said it, but they said it best. Anime is something special, and if you want it, you have to pay for it! Simple as that.

The early 80's. I grew up on stuff like Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer, Captain Harlock, Voltron, Thundercats, Tranzor Z (Mazinger), etc. But like most children of the 80's, it was Robotech that really roped me into the whole Japanese Animation thing. ^_^

I used to watch this weird anime thing (i think tht was wat it was) that had found it's way onto a woody woodpecker video...
I can't remember what it is called I don't think it had a name that I knew of, I was like 5. I think it plante a seed in my mind though. i stuck a thread on here earlier his year asking about it but I didn't get a great response. It was about a queen who passes off her daughter as a prince, but hey get found out and the get sent away. It was very depressing for a kiddies video. I wish I could find out what it was, and watch it. i would be liking watching yor childhood, lol.:)

I've always watched anime since I was a kid. Back when all that I knew about was Akira/Ghost in the Shell/Ninja Scroll :) I really came into anime about 4 years ago. Guy I worked with had an anime check on his desktop (later I learned it was Naru) I asked him about it and thats how we became friends and I got into anime. He's since moved away so I really don't have any friends who are into anime anymore :(

I could say in the early 80's when I was a little brat watching Speed Racer and Voltron, but that would be cheating since I had no idea what "anime" was at the time.
It wasn't until the mid 90's (either 94 or 95, something like that), when I was in high school, that I actually got into "anime" by hearing about stuff like Akira and Project A-Ko in various magazines and tracking down the videos and by watching a local public access show that aired other stuff.

Sometime in the late '90s. Gargoyles had just ended, and I was looking for something to replace it with. My luck being what it was, I was just out of college, gainfully employed, and still living at home. Those were the days. ^_^ Anyway, I picked up VHS's of Magic Knight Rayearth and quickly realized VHS was a dying format. Since I was able to splurge a bit, not having any bills, I bought a dvd player, Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, and Serial Experiments Lain. My life is only better for it. :)

I really got into it back in 6th grade....well... technically i really liked Sailor Moon and DBZ and Pokemon back in the mid to late 1990's, but after i got into Digimon, i was introduced to Big O....then i rented a DVD, and it had a preview for Cowboy Bebop...then i got into Adult Swim, which was really my first encounter with non-kiddie anime. And I mean the EARLY Adult Swim... with the robotic voice introducing the whole disclaimer thing.. not the black and white cards.... and this was around 2000-2001.

In the late '80s, I was addicted to Robotech and Voltron. Of course, at that time I had no idea that what I was watching was anime, or even what anime was. Later on, I started renting random anime videos (Venus Wars, Dominion, Akira, etc...) and started watching Sailor Moon when a local channel played it. This was probably around '95-'96. I've been actually collecting anime for about seven years now.

I'm a child brought up in the old days of anime, such as Gigantor and Speed Racer. However, my actual interest didn't kick in until I saw Macross in Japan in '84. And my current state of fandom I blame on the release of Akira in the late 80's early 90's.

I grew up watching DB/Z, Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, etc, on TV in Japan. I was 6 years old then, and mid-80's anime is what I was fed. I moved to California in 1992, and had completely forgotten about anime, since it wasn't easily accessible compared to when I was living in Japan.
I started to get back into anime in high school; more seriously this time. My passion for anime grew when I took computer graphics for 3 years. The rest is history.

Probably around four or five years ago with that stuff that ran on Toonami. I had practice after school so I started using the internet to research the stuff I liked.
If anyone is talking about the first stuff I watched, it was back when I was eight visiting the Philippines, and I saw some Dragonball Z. Around that time Sailor Moon used to air on TV. I didn't know it was anime at the time though, back then the internet wasn't an option in my house (with our three year old 50 MHz Intel pre-Pentium processor and a hard drive smaller than my current laptop's RAM).

I got into anime when I saw Sailor Moon on Toonami back in late 1999. The moment I saw it, I never turned away from it again, and I kept getting into it more and more. Sooner or later, I got the VHS tapes and those tapes had previews to other anime series I ended up getting too. After watching so many shows on Toonami overtime, I just became an anime fan.

Well I started watching My Neighbor Totoro, Sailor Moon and alittle bit of Pokemon. That was when I was elementary school and middle school (ages 8-12). But I didn't really know about anime back then...But one of my friends introduced me to Princess Mononoke and a number of other anime my sophomore year of highschool. So...I guess it was all because of him that I got so interested and started watching and buying my own series'! Adult swim back in the day helped alot...:)

Well...I got into Sailor Moon while watching it in 1995 or 1996...Then, I watched Pokemon, Cardcaptors (urgh...-_-;...Couldn't they have kept the original name?), Digimon, and some other edited anime on public television around 1999...:P (I really liked Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, and Escaflowne, though.) Those were my first anime... (Fun trivia, but I just remembered it...My first anime movie was the edited Kiki's Delivery Service on VHS...I'm surprised I remember it...)
Then, around 2000, I found a lovely magazine by the name of Anime Invasion (now titled Anime Insider). With this magazine, I found out that there was more to the foreign cartoons I had been seeing. Once I read this magazine, I looked at it as an art form, not just an ordinary cartoon. :)
I think I started collecting anime in 2002, though...I had been buying (which I had not realized) manga for years, though (since 1999 or 2000, I think?). I started collecting anime volume to volume, though, with Chobits in 2003. I had a slow start, but when I think about it, most of it was pretty random. Luckily, though, one morning almost 10 years ago, I turned on the television to find Sailor Moon being broadcast. If I hadn't discovered it then, I doubt I would know about anime at all right now. :) (Funny how things turn out, huh? :P)

It all began with Gatchaman in 1994. I never became a full fledged anime fan until 2002. At first I noticed the anime DVD section in my local Best Buy (at the time was just a small rack) and bought Tenchi Muyo In Love 1 along with our first DVD player. Afterwards I noticed the Oh! My Goddess OAV in my local blockbuster and rented that out before moving on to the movie. After the movie I was trying to hunt down some AMG manga, and then I came across AN (still in the black layout :P).
Around summer of that year, I recalled one of my team mates in the summer camp I went to the year before mentioned of an anime convention in Long Beach, CA so I decided to look it up and I decided to go. Before that, I rented out the first two VHSs of Evangelion and got hooked. Anime Expo 2002 pretty much sealed the fate for me as an anime fan. :D
...eleven days later, I joined AN. ^_^ The rest is history. ;)

Back in 91 a friend of mine showed me an anime called Fist of the North Star. From that point on, I watched everything I could get my hands on at the time. Vampire Hunter D, Lensman, Dangaioh, Gunbuster, Doomed Megapolis, Dominion Tank Police, Green Legend Ran, Dagger of Kuimai... Then I cooled off a bit, mostly because there wasnt a market for anime yet. Finally a couple years later, "newer" animes came in Ninja Scroll, Street Fighter the movie, Wicked City, Ghost in the Shell, Twilight of the Dark Master, and I was back in it.
Its a shame a lot of folk here are saying that they consider anime to be the American cartoons they saw in Robotech and Voltron. A real shame...

I think it must've been the mid to late-80s. I saw this cartoon (or so I thought at the time) called Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs and thought it looked really cool. (I was into Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, Silverhawks, and Visionaries--anything that was considered a "boy" cartoon.) But I didn't really know what it was. And then my sister's boyfriend introduced me to Ranma 1/2 via a bootleg fighting game, and I was a goner.

Not when did I get into anime, but when did I discover that is was anime? I think my first anime was either Dragon Ball or Speed Racer. I've always liked anime, but I didn't discover that is was "anime" until middle school. That's when, I began to consciously notice the difference between Japanese and American cartoons.
I just love cartoons. I like anime and American cartoons for different reasons.

Around 4 years ago. At that point the Dragonball manga came out in Denmark and the anime was showed on television (with horrible dubbed voices, but oh well).
I immediately loved it, although I quickly realized that the anime sucked compared to the manga.
Then 2 years went by, with me being a Dragonball fanboy, but never really getting further into anime.
So 2 years ago, I started to get seriously into it. Since then I have watched lots and lots of shows, and have become quite the animefan.
That is not long compared to most people in here, I know. But then, anime is not really known as anything, but pokemon and the like in my country at the moment, so I wasn't exactly inspired to become a fan. Another point is of course that I am only 16, and therefore, just haven't had the same time to discover it as a lot of people in here.

I grew up as a child of the 80s with Robotech and eventually seen Vampire Hunter D somewhere around 1990 or 1991. I've been a fan of varying degrees ever since, from casual to obsessed.

Robotech was also one that I started with. The other was Project Ako. I saw both when the si-fi channel used to have them on early in the morning. That was around when I was a freshman in high school. Then I dropped off for awhile (didn't have an allowance at the time so no money to buy). Then I happened to catch Cowboy Bebop on AS and it brought it all back.

Early 80s, I used to watch Star Blazers (Yamato) and Force Five (Gaiking, Getter Robo, Starzinger, Danguard A, Grendizer) with my brother every day. Later other shows were added to the line-up, like Voltron (Go Lion & Dairugger XV) and Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada), and Transzor Z (Mazinger Z)
There were a whole slew of other shows too that I can't think of at the moment.

Suprisingly it was Anime and they were playing the Dragon Ball Z movie Dead Zone and I just had to get that movie it looked so dang cool. I bought that and Read or Die (which I have to buy both again). A week later I was watch T.V. and I saw Toonami(when they showed it on week days. And saw Gundam wing. Been a fan ever since!

I got started on anime ever since I was born. Since that was the stuff that was most interesting to me whenever my parents left the TV on with the network channels. Besides, my parents were somewhat of anime fans in their younger days as well.
I can't even remember what the old anime were. They showed a lot of 70's anime during the early 80's.
Though I can't even remember the specifics of those ancient anime, I do remember that a lot of them were awesome. heh. The only show I can remember is Ranma 1/2. All others were either obscure, or were only popular in the 70's and early 80's.

Just like with everyone else here, It started when I was a kid watching voltron, robotech etc.
Then I further got into it when I was around 13 years old when Sci-Fi channel used to air anime on saturday mornings and was amazed when I saw Akira, Record of Lodoss War, Project ako and Vampire Hunter D. Then I got into Dragonball Z and have been a fan ever since.
I can still remember back in 1997-98 when suncoast had a tiny anime section and it was only VHS, now it's a huge section with all dvds. Times have definitely changed.

I started watching the summer after my sophomore year in high school, so about three years ago. I was up late one night, and caught Lupin III. My first thought was that it was a really stupid show, but the next night I watched it again (just to prove how stupid it was), and then again, and again...
Eventually I'd seen every episode multiple times. Then I saw Trigun, and the rest is history.

When I was 12 and saw Akira on the Sci-Fi Channel was the first anime I ever saw (and knew it was anime). I liked it, but thought at the time that all anime was like that (wierd, hard to understand, cool-looking).
I really got into anime once I was introduced to Sailor Moon by a friend when I was 16 and quickly grew obsessed with it. It was all downhill from there. :P
By the way, I'm 23 now.

Yep, me too. Early 80's, I was 7-8ish. Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer, Thundercats, old school Transformers. However, I didn't know it was imported or anything, I just liked watching the shows.
Forgot about it for years. Didn't think of anime at all again until sitting in front of a computer at college in maybe 1997 or '98. Found pics of Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess, and was so intrigued by the artwork style, I looked into it further. Came full circle and fell in love with it all over again.
Now I am officially hopeless, and am only *starting* to spend money on anime and manga. *Sigh*. Only starting! :D

I was into Wierd-Al, saw an amv which had 3 different animes in it.
I picked one and got sucked into anime ever since.
It was a selection of Karin, FMA and one I can't remember
I chose Karin and went onto Chobits. I then saw AMV hell 3 and thought to choose one from that list. I chose Excel saga Which I enjoyed, Then I had a hit of nostalgia When I saw Tenchi in there. I went From Tenchi to Ah! My Goddess and onto other things

I first got into anime in '98. My friend's older brother had bought evengelion and was showing it to us. After that, I was obsessed with anime for well, it has been almost 10 years. At least the obsession has cooled off to some extent now.
