Cartoons = American animation
(traditionally aimed at younger audiences, but US cartoons have been following suit and are targetting mature audiences now as well, like South Park and Stripperella)
Anime = Japanese animation
(always has been an alternative entertainment media in Japan comparable to movies and theater, diversity of themes/subject matter aimed at various age groups)

Of course, there is a difference between mature and mature. :P

Yes. But I still think it's useless to get worked up over calling anime a cartoon. They are both animated.
Cartoon
1.
1. A drawing depicting a humorous situation, often accompanied by a caption.
2. A drawing representing current public figures or issues symbolically and often satirically: a political cartoon.
2. A preliminary sketch similar in size to the work, such as a fresco, that is to be copied from it.
3. An animated cartoon.
4. A comic strip.
5. A ridiculously oversimplified or stereotypical representation: criticized the actor's portrayal of Jefferson as a historically inaccurate cartoon.
It may be silly to some, but I don't like people mislabelling anime. Yes they are both animated, but that's not the only thing a cartoon is defined as in the dictionary. Most things that make up a "cartoon" are not the format of what makes up all anime series.
In life, people judge immediately, whether we want to admit it or not, on first impressions. So, that example or going around and saying "gay" is a good example. Gay now has different meaning, and isn't exactly what someone would want to run around saying if they only ment they were happy - it gives people the wrong impression. If you tell any America that you watch cartoons, while anime does fall (not completely) under that definition it still causes people to think of a little kids show, if you elaborated more and told them that Japanese "cartoons" are nothing like Western ones I don't have as much of a problem, but the idea that they are a cartoon is still implanted in the persons head.
Now that I've said my opinion I don't have anything left to say here - you're just going to keep saying "but they're both animated" anyway, so what's the point.

Anime still needs it's respect and it really makes me mad when people put it down like that.

most think that if you call it a cartoon its made for a child and the Anime is for us serious folk who know and understand. but im not sure why people absolutely hate when non-otakus call them cartoons but it really does not matter to me so i just correct whoever aciddentally made a mistake

Cartoon is a kids word. Animated film is much more acceptable.

Just to clear up: I didn't say that cartoons are poorly made or lack of any values either.
I just meant that I don't find them beautiful or fascinating at all.
I don't think that it's an inappropriate bashing,
at least in a forum that's called animenation and not toonnation.
It served just the purpose of explaination why I don't like it when anime are called toons.
exactly. ^^ the only time I don't say anything is if it's the teacher. 0_0

<_< Time to let this thread die, guys.
Agreed. Nothing anyone says is going to change minds on either side of the fence, so discussion of which is 'right' is pointless.

:mad: That's it! I'm so tired of this cartoon vs anime title, junk!
:devil: From now on in my life (not in the animenation forums) I'm going to refer to American cartoons as "Anime" and Japanese animation as "Cartoons"; and everyone will just have to deal.

cartoon isn't synonymous with animation, just because something is animated doesn't mean its a cartoon.
that being said a lot of japanese animated shows are, in fact, cartoons.

I can understand why anime fans would not like Japanamation to be called a "Cartoon".There is a whole series of logic and reasons for this,Americans make Cartoons...Japanese make Anime.

Where did this thread come from?
Not gonna debate anymore, but depending on what the topic of a certain post is, I would sometimes call anime "cartoon" instead just to see whose buttons get pushed.

Wow... I looked up "cartoon" in dictionary.com and it gave me this:
.... Then it gave me this for "anime":
a dictionary defenition should never use the word it's defining in it's defenition

I like anime more than cartoons, thus I seperate the terms. To me, it is like comparing a Honda to a Ford/Chevy (which ever it may be... after the merge :lol: ). Both are cars... but not every aspect is the same. There is no Ars Poetica to animation, so seperating the terms is perfectly correct, and those who choose to do so, choose a path others disagree with, but it is valid. "cartoon = animation" and "anime = animation" just doesn't satisfy some of us.
