Actually, no. While inserting a huge disclaimer that I'm not as well-versed as you might think, it's mostly just due to the fact that I've been interested in Japanese since way back in high school... I started ordering music CDs from there and I didn't want to rely on other people to be able to read the track lists, so I started simple and began learning the two kana systems. I received "Teach Yourself Japanese" as a gift. After a time, I picked up a giant book on kanji (which is currently falling apart, like my "Teach Yourself Japanese" book) and began to get acquainted with those monsters. Eventually, I took all of the Japanese courses my community college had to offer.

After that, my interest was sustained by my desire to be able to read the Japanese materials I possesed, which went from music CDs to NGE scripts, books, and games, and I've slowly gotten better. (Or, at least, better at using the Internet and various computer programs to find what I need to know to understand something... Every once in the while, I actually remember something new. :P )

Sadly, I am completely disabled when it comes to "practical Japanese" -- I receive no practice with the conversational aspect, and informal Japanese still remains a huge challenge for me. Basically, if you sent me to Japan, I wouldn't be able to fend for myself linguistically. Oh, well.

That's fantastic. I have always wanted to learn to read even a little. I even had hopes of understanding the language a bit since I have been watching anime for over two decades and in the past I had no subtitles or dubs to fall back on. Basic synopsis from anime magazines and newsgroup posts are all I had. I literally had to make up my own dialogue as I watched. Sadly I have not fed the desire to learn the language like yourself so I am at the mercy of fansubbers, dubbers, etc. which isn't too bad I suppose. I just like the idea of being able to understand the anime in it's pure form. After watching NGE in dub and some sub (still going through it) I realized that a lot of the theories I formed were based on someone else's translation.

The phrase "lost in translation" really hits home for me with NGE.

It's up now, and truthfully speaking, the game sounds pretty horrible. Well, there were a few scenes that gave me a chuckle (of course, partly because of their descriptions): I found the MJ12-reference to be especially amusing. What exactly are they implying? ;)

Also, the "robo-Shinji" -scenario was, ahem, surprising (makes me want to add a stupid comment to ep. #03/025). Too bad they didn't go all-out with its comedic potential and pair Shinji up with Keel, an older cranky cybernetic cop. It could have been like Lethal Weapon:

Keel: "I'm too old for this sh*t!"
Shinji: "Shut up and keep shooting!"

Yes, I noticed that too. What confuses me is that most of the SHIFT-JIS files on gameFAQs cause your browser to autoselect the correct encoding. This doesn't.

The most annoying one I came across was an FAQ for SRW:Alpha where the author had switched from SHIFT-JIS to UTF-8 about half-way through, and while he had converted most of his JIS kana/kanji to UTF-8, he had missed a few. Impossible to read, I tell you!
