It wasn't banned.
There's just a mess with the licencing for it. If you can't wait for the mess to work itself out, then import it.
You can get it all over the place. The R2 (UK) special edition, and the Korean R3 releases are very good.

"Sirabella also mentioned that Media Blasters has been trying to obtain the rights for both Battle Royale and Battle Royale 2, but so far, Toei has kept a very tight rein on the licenses."

Blame Toei. You would think since Toei is now bringing DVDs to America, they would just personally release BR in America.

I've seen a copy of it in the Virgin Megastore in downtown Chicago, so I doubt it is banned in the U.S. However, the same store also has porn sitting in the open so I am not 100% sure.

It wasn't the official R1 release. There is an official Korean R0 release that even Netflix is currently carrying but I wouldn't bother watching due to engrish subs. If one has a good DVD player, get the R0/R2 Tartan PAL DVD. It is worth the $$$.

I just read Vol. 1 and 2 of the manga. Holy ****.
Mr. Kamon and the rest of The Program committee must die. Yes. I will see to it that they all meet their delicious fates. HA HA HA :ssj:
If MB wants the movies, does that mean that they're live-action? Or are they anime?
And I hope Toei doesn't personally release it; otherwise we'll have more faulty DVDs.

I haven't gotten around to buying the movie yet (you don't have to import, though). As for getting a R1 release, Toei wants a large sum of money for the license (I think around 2 million), plus they have been a bit overly protective of it. As for the manga, the art style takes some getting used to, but it's pretty good.

Toei has offices here in the US now. Why don't they release it themselves?
Actually, no, they better wait until they fix all the problems with their DVDs and
hire VAs we actually know of, not some random people from Toronto that only did Sailor Moon.

They may well do so... one day.
I wouldn't hold your breath for it, though.

I'm not sure if it was the official Korean version or just a bootleg, but the version I saw had horrible engrish subs. I was still able to follow the general idea of the story, but a lot of lines were either untranslated or complete giberish.

I'm not sure, but there certainly is a legit Korean version.
At the very least the UK release of Battle Royale has acceptable subtitles.

Tartan (US) also said that they would like to release it. He said it probably would be a while (if ever) before it was released in the states.

Battle Royal isn't banned here. Just hard to find. I do hope a domestic company would release it themselves, but it's not gonna happen for a long time.

not many people have mentioned anything about the novel, in many cases the novel a movie is based off of is usually better than the movie itself, i got into BR when i saw the manga, but since i'm on a tight budget i decided just to buy the novel instead of the manga, and its a novel worth reading, so if you really cant get a hold of the movie then just get the book

I bought the R0 film with the Korean and engrish subs. Not too much engrish. It's either that or I've watched 10 too many hours of fansubs to not give a rats ***. Still good stuff. Gotta pick up BR2 at some point but eh, I've been saying I'll pick up the Blue Seed complete DVD collection for 3 years now.

I read the novel and I love it. By far the best version of all 3.
The movie is good, and it features my love Chiaki Kuriyama! Decent adaption, but a little crammed in comparsion with the other formats.
The manga: Oh my God. It's awful. The most expensive and yet the worst! The only commendable aspect is its mediocre artwork which is pretty hit and miss. The dialogue is absolutely terrible. Buy the original tankoubons in japanese, and you actually have a better chance of understanding the story. Its just that bad...there a lot of gore and nudity which somewhat redeems the botched plot/characterization. But it seems sorta pointless (reality Tv? Wtf?)

Oh I got a bootleg version of it in GameStop about two years ago for five bucks. It's in good condition and the subtitles aren't that bad. Its probaly the version that Toyaniz was talking about.
I don't think it'll ever come out here though; with all of the violence that's been going on in the news lately, all the media needs is to get a hold of a movie that's basically about teenagers killing each other and it'll be "BAN THIS MOVIE! WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN???"

Instead of school violence being outlawed, it's promoted by the government when they send a whole class of students off to an island. :P
But ever since the events at Columbine, school violence is heavily looked upon as a major issue for America's youth. I highly doubt Battle Royale will sit well with most adults who have young children that attend public schools, but at least it's much better than the TV game show "Survivor" (so boring...). You outlast your rivals on an island by killing them! ;)

Read the novel. It is the best.
BUT my Hot Topic has the box set with both movies and an extras disc or two.

There is an awesome anime of Battle Royale made in the 80's called Battle Royale High School

I think that has nothing to do with Battle Royale. First of all, it says "Battle Royal" (no E at the end) and just looking at the character and the text at the bottom, it looks more like a fighting/shonen anime like Real Bout High School or Ikkitousen.

Luckyyyy. Both of my Hot Topics have now gotten rid of most of their good stuff, including their anime and game shirts. <_<
I saw the movie based after the book (I think it was at least). It was pretty bloody lol, but cool too.
