This may not belong here, but I thought fans of anime and J-pop could definitely appreciate getting turned onto this band: Asobi Seksu.

I got to see them last weekend in St. Louis. The whole audience was spellbound - too bad they had to play in that dive, the Red Sea, but it definitely had the makings of an intimate show. Anyway, I've been rocking out to their CD ever since and thought I'd share this discovery. Though they're from NY, the lead singer performs several of the songs in Japanese. And for all you shoegazers, they're most often compared to My Bloody Valentine. Oh - and the drummer is just ridiculously hot! A friend just told me about Asobi Seksu yesterday. He'd told me about a Japanese shoegaze band, I couldn't believe him. Shoegaze from Japan? He's only half right... the lead singer is Japanese, but it's a Brooklyn band. I'm listening to the music samples and I'm totally hooked. The closest a shoegaze band ever got to Japan in the past was Lush, with the lead singer Miki being half-Japanese.

So while my hopes for the prospect of a decent band coming out of Japan seems to have been dashed, I've found another cool band from New York. I'm really liking the songs "Thursday" and "New Years" on their album Citrus.

There's such an incredible music renaissance from New York these days. Not since Manchester, England in the 80's have there been so many incredible bands popping out of one city and its surroundings.

What I find interesting is that although the shoegazer movement died off in the UK over fourteen years ago (I think Adorable was the last band to capture the sound), the shoegazer music movement has been resurrected in the USA. The Meeting Places, Bethany Curve, Alcian Blue, and Vaportrail are some I've discovered.

I did a search to find that this lonely post was made a year and a half ago with no replies. Well, Milky Mixer, finally somebody has replied.
