Whats Harem?
A "harem" anime is a (usually) romantic comedy series where there is a main protagonist (usually male) who is surrounded by a lot of different stereotypical characters of the opposite sex, often in the same house/dormatory/etc. It is very appealing to anyone since the protagonist is usually either shy or often embarrassed (like the viewer might be), and never choses a mate, thus leaving it completely open for the viewer to fantasize. This is also great for the dojinshi market, because fans can buy stories where the protagonist ends up with who they want him or her to. Tenchi Muyo is a perfect example.
On that note, yea, Azumanga Daiou is definately not a harem series, neither is Chobits, Golden Boy or (from what Ive heard) Video Girl Ai.
Azu is about school and friends and japanese idiosyncrasies. Chobits doesnt have any rivalries or even questioned romance, and only lives with chii and sumomo. In Golden Boy, Kintaro is a drifter, who never really has any real attraction to the women he comes into contact with. Sure, his hormones get the best of him at times, but he is happy to just move on, and there is never any clash of love interests, not even in they end.

In Chobits the Minoru Kokubunji is also surrounded by beautiful women, its just there Persocons :P As for Golden Boy.. That is definitely a harem anime every episode he is surrounded by beautiful women! Don't you remember the ending? When they are all leaving the movie place running after him?? As for Video girl Ai true the main character is only surrounded by Hayakawa Moemi and Amano Ai however the true nature of the show allows it to be in the category of Harem anime.
Edit: Now lets get back to naming more harem titles okay :naughty:

Not really. Sure, all the female characters are attractive, and he almost has a thing with his boss' daughter, but it is definately not a "harem". Based on the name, a "harem" requires a central place (a house for example) where the lead is surrounded by the love interests. Minoru also is pretty well lined up with Chii, there is no confusion (after briefly with his boss' daughter) who he'll end up with.
As for Golden Boy.. That is definitely a harem anime every episode he is surrounded by beautiful women! Don't you remember the ending? When they are all leaving the movie place running after him??
How can a drifter be a part of a harem? In each episode there are new female characters, and in each episode he is only interested in one(and only superficially). In fact, in the end he is SO uninterested in them, he leaves without considering them completely. And they dont fight each other chasing him, Madame President even allowed someone to tag along in her car. I think what they want the viewer to believe is that once they catch him, they'll all happily have sex with him together.
Many female leads does not a "harem" make, keep that in mind.
But if thats all you're looking for, check out some titles based on H games, like Green Green, or RaimuIro Senkitan. You also might like I, My, Me. Although it's snipoff was liscensed, you can still download Hanaukyo Maid Tai, which is more of a harem. The coming up Kore wa watashi no goshujinsama will have a pervy male lead with lots of attractive females. I hope these titles help.

More suggestions: although short, did you check out Eiken?

Well actually it is loosely "like" a harem anime since Kimura IS in fact surrounded by young beautiful girls! :punch:
...who are running away from Kimura-sensei... the complete opposite of what a harem should be
Secondly, within the Kimura-sensei love connection, there's only 2. His wife and that student (can't remember her name)
No one else is involved in that....
Many female leads does not a "harem" make, keep that in mind.
Exactly.
Although it's snipoff was liscensed, you can still download Hanaukyo Maid Tai, which is more of a harem.
More of a harem? the poor guy got assaulted by a crowd of naked maids.....
then serviced once more (And by 3 maids no less...) before he goes to sleep...
Poor guy indeed...
That's a harem anime if ever i've seen one...
And the spinoff sucks... it's much much weaker and doesn't have that magic that the original had...
The coming up Kore wa watashi no goshujinsama will have a pervy male lead with lots of attractive females.
Looking forward to this... along the same lines as Hanaukyo Maid Tai...
Edit: Now lets get back to naming more harem titles okay :naughty:
We are... by saying in full why stuff like Azumanga and Chobits isn't harem gives, for want of a better word, guidelines on what harem anime should be
I have heard alot about Eiken but I heard that is is extremely bad by some and extremely good so I am kind of un sure about it.
It's also a harem anime... one that not only fits your request (many pretty girls surrounding one guy...) but which is also qualifies in most books as harem anime
No one said Negima!
Uh-huh.. There's one with a big cast....
I'm questioning whether Maburaho could be considered Harem... it's certantly harem-like...
Glimpses of the Saber Marrionette series kinda look like Harem.. but i haven't seen enough of it to accurately tell.
that's about all i can think about for Harem anime...

well, I personally didn't like it, but you can download it first to see if you do.
Also, while not really harem, you might like You're Under Arrest, which has many female leads, and romantic comedy elements, although is overall just a comedy. Also, if you also like more romance than harem style, I would definately reccomend Kare Kano, and you might like Peach Girl (i dont, though). If you enjoyed Mahoromatic, you might like Kono minikuku mo utsukushi sekai, which is by the same people, Gainax, who I am a big fan of. However, it is very existential in addition to being a self proclaimed "SF love comedy". All of these can be downloaded, too, except for maybe Kare Kano.

Here's a few that I have not seen mentioned yet:
Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure - A parody of Neon Genesis Evangellion where one young male pilot lives in a harem situation with the other (all cute female) pilots.
Futakoi - This one puts a twist on the typical harem situation by making all the girls twins.
Shuffle! - One boy, two girls from the land of the demons, one girl from the land of the gods, and a couple of human girls make up this harem

Tenchi GXP (Totally new characters, I have not seen it.. but I heard that Mihoshi makes an appearance?)
? = I am not 100% surePretty much right, but off in a few spots...especially the OVAs and the OVA movie...
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 1 (eps. 1-6)
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 1 Special, "The Night Before the Carnival" (episode 7)
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki Galaxy Police Mihoshi's Space Adventure (Mihoshi Special) - This episode occurs immediately after OVA 1, and should be noted that the entire special is just a fantasy of Mihoshi's.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki Manatsu no Eve (Tenchi Muyo! Daughter of Darkness) - This movie chronologically takes place after OVA 1, but is essentially an alternate-reality tale. None of what takes place here has anything to do with OVA 2 or 3...so it is not considered canon. It is NOT a sequel to TM! in Love...
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 2 (eps. 8-13.5) - DO NOT miss ep. 13.5 after ep. 13's credits!
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 3 (eps. 14-19) - This was left off of Lunay's list for some reason...
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki! OVA 3 Special (ep.20)
~ OVA 3 introduces characters, and leads directly into:
Tenchi Muyo! GXP: Galaxy Police Transporter (26 episodes)
Tenchi Universe (26 episodes)
Tenchi Muyo! in Love (movie)
Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2 (Tenchi Forever!) (movie)
There are also the Pretty Sammy and Magical Project S spinoffs...even though they are more "magical girl" series instead of "harem" series...
A distant relative of TM! is Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure, which was made by Masaki Kajishima, the creator of TM! There are some common elements in both, plus a lot of character cameos - it qualifies as a harem title, so it might be worth looking into...
^_^

I think Stelok got it right, except for the too many comment. For anyone that's interested, just go to ANN or MAL and check out what's come out each season and you'll see that there aren't exactly too many or too few of them when compared to most other genres.
The problem is that they really are mass-produced. Even if the source material isn't a mindless fanservice romp, the anime adaptations usually get reduced to just that. It's a shame that even some of the worst harems actually would have had substance if they weren't just amalgamations.
However, even though these anime seem to scrape the bottom of the barrel, you'll always find more than enough people giving them 10s and saying they're the best anime ever. The quality of the show doesn't matter to these people. Harem=good to them. For a really good example of this, go check out the users at MAL. You can't throw a stone without hitting an otaku, and I mean that in the original sense of the word.
There are not enough harem animes in recent years.

If you ask me, I thought the whole harem genre peaked with Tenchi Muyo and everything that's followed in the footsteps of Tenchi, Ryoko, Ayeka and company have been nothing more than pale imitations, even though I've liked shows like Ai Yori Aoshi, Love Hina, Mabaraho and Negima!, they just weren't as great as TM. Just like mecha anime, harem shows have been overdone but I doubt either genre will either go away.

There's one new "harem-ish" show this season that I have not seen mentioned called Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu.
http://myanimelist.net/images/anime/3/9487l.jpg
The main characters are Yuuto and Haruka, but the male lead, Yuuto, is surrounded by a number of other females including Haruka's scheming younger sister, his own drunken older sister, a flirtatious homeroom teacher, an energetic transfer student, and a couple of maids.
Its pretty tame in the fanservice department but nice in an innocent highschool romance kind of way. ^_^

After watching Love Hina, I ended up hating the genre. I even dropped True Tears after seeing the direction that it was taking.
By the way, watch True Tears. :P
I love you.
But True Tears is actually pretty good. Not your typical harem (is it even a harem? There's only 3 girls...).

I am so using that as a title for my new harem manga. Don't anyone deny "Necro Power" wouldn't make an awesome title for a harem manga.
What, "Necro Power" sounds more like badass shounen than a harem title? IT CAN BE BOTH! Just look at Negima.

My-Otome
White Album
School Days
Hayate no Gotoku (not really focused on though)
Shakugan no Shana
True Tears
Toradora
Harem just means multiple people attracted to one individual right?

Lovable loser and high school senior Hiroshi Yogima thought his life would never be interesting until he met Aniko Kanamitsu, a beautiful and mysterious stranger. But things aren't quite as they seem! Aniko is actually one of the 9 demon princesses of Zansorunia and she has set out to form a physical bond with the incarnation of the last unwed demon king: Hiroshi! Horishi is horrified by this revelation and flees, only to be hit by a car. This brush with death unlocks his hidden Nekuro Pawaasu. Aniko agrees to help Horishi train with his powers and things are going well until 8 new female students tranfer to Onisoka High: The remaining princesses!!!
Hijinks ensue!
That's echhi, harem, shounen necro powers all wrapped in one. All I need is Romi Paku or Rie Kagimiya as Aniko and that's a multi-million dollar franchise with at least 3 H-Games and 4 seasons and no less than 9 love pillows by default.
