It appears there are a few Japanese/Caucasian or Japanese/Chinese couples in anime. Asian/Black couples are even rarer. So why haven't anime-ka introduced and even promoted interracial or interethnic canon couples in their series?

I salute Macross creators for daring to develop interracial relationships between a white (Roy Focker) and black (Claudia) as well as that between Japanese (Hikaru) and Chinese (Minmei).

Miaka and Tamahome from Fushigi Yuugi all the way. Miaka was a Japanese schoolgirl who feel in love with a celestial warrior from Konan in the Universe of the Four Gods. Konan is a place that looked very much like Yuu Watase's own version of ancient China. In short, Tamahome is most likely Chinese, and he feel in love with a Japanese girl.

This was a relationship that had developed little by little after a series of events where he managed to impress her after saving her life so many times. After they became good friends, and he was always by her side being there for her, they became so attached to each other that their feelings for each other grew tremendously. The way this couple feel in love was just so sweet and touching, especially when they kissed in the Kutou palace, home of the God of the east, Seiryu. This was definitely my favorite couple in anime!!

Iris was almost 10 when Sakura Wars began. it mean she was still 9 at that time. Iris turned 12 in Sakura Wars 2 .

I'd have to include Nube (human.. though he has a demon hand) and Yukime (Ice maiden demon) from Hell Teacher Nube. Even if it may not be fully possible (though it's gold material for fanfics), I like the Ritsuko (human) and Tamamo (Fox Demon) couple from Hell Teacher Nube a lot too.

Saint Seiya is a goldmine for interacial relationships. Just pair Saori (apparently Greek but grew up in Japan) with most of the guys from the series that are attracted to her and you have a lot of interacial pairings. I personally like the Saori x Milo (He's from Milo island, who knows where that comes from!) pairing a lot cuse Milo is very jealous! Saori and Julian Solo (random Mediterranean country) make a cute interracial couple too.

Topic's a little old, but worth a comment.

From Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Roy Focker and Claudia LaSalle wasn't that big a deal, at least not from a Japanese perspective. These two characters were both foreign racial groups (Roy was a white North American and Claudia was a black North American), which really have very little direct impact on Japanese society. Ironically, Roy and Claudia being coupled is a bigger deal to most foreigners than the people that created the characters :)

However, the relationship between Hikaru and Minmay is a BIG deal. The Japanese and the Chinese do not get along and those two characters (a Japanese Male and a Chinese Female) getting together was very controversial and provocative for an animated television show. Sadly, it would remain as such even today.
