the psp is coming out next thursday and i was wondering if the value pack is worth it i think the psp has a rechargable battery and comes with a charger like the sp but im not sure on anything but the killer price

Honestly, the value pack looks like crap. The case doesn't close, the memory stick is small, and I've read online reviews that the headphones are uncomfortable.
Also I've heard that Sony isn't distributing the PSP alone in North America, so value packs the only way to go if you want to get one. (At the time being)

Over 400 dollars in order to get a PSP, I see so far. If I bought a PSP for over 400 with a bunch of stuff and games I don't need *AKA Sports games*, because Value Packs are the only way to buy them because of Sony. My grandmother would kill me. Plus the fact that my grandmother heard about the problems with PSP, like the ability to shoot out disks by mistake, etc. Plus the only game I want on the PSP *which I already have on Dreamcast as a import, minus chaos tower*, is Darkstalkers Chronicles.

I've got my mind set on getting a PSP, and Ridge Racers. I cannot wait to cruise through the Heaven and Hell track from RR3. I m prepared to pay $300+ for the PSP, RR and sales tax. I'm cool with the bundle and price , it seems quite aprorpiate.

The price will drop when Sony releases a standalone pack. at the least I expect that to be $175-$200. I also expect both Sony and Nintendo to drop their handheld prices next fall in time for Xmas.... almost like a deadheat...

I'll wait for the standalone. The "value pack" is a BS way for them to make money fast. That memory card sucks. I'll end up buying a bigger one. I don't need headphones, etc.

$40 for a movie you can't even finish (as the batteries may die, like 3 hours watching UMD's on FULL CHARGE), is a ripoff. RIPOFF

I will not be wasting my money on this. There is no games for it that are coming to the US that interest me. All the PSP has are ports of PS2 games I don't really care that much about to begin with. "Oooh, it has pretty graphics." Yeah, I'll keep my $400, thanks.

Spidey isn't 3 hours, but you got a point. But I am not the type of gamer who goes on a 8 hour long ride or whatever and spend my entire 8 hours on gaming. I m more thew casual gamer, play a hour or two tops, then read something, . I look forward to playing my PSP every morning at work, where I get a hour to 90 minutes of "idle " time. I also dream of playing an episode of Bebop, but that probably won't be possible for awhile, unless there is a way to write your own UMDs..... Hmm..

I'm with you. I'm not even going to bother. I don't need a handheld console...thats what consoles are for. I'll hold onto that cash and put it towards an XBox2. I know some people don't care for XBox, but its certainly more bang for your buck. Hell, if you don't like that direction, you can buy approx 6 games or put it towards the new PS3 or Revolution. I simply can't justify paying that price for a handheld with a pathetic battery life, not when I could buy 2 consoles for the same price. I'll stick with my GBA.

Persona 2. In it's entirety. To the US. That is reason for a PSP. Costs be damned. I don't really know WHY Atlus is competing with itself across consoles (Shin Megami Tensei games on DS) but it is. I'm not morally opposed to PSP like I am DS, so since there are games on it that I want, I will end up buying one. My wallet is already crying, but it'll pay.

I'm gonna see how it stacks up to the DS and then make a final decision. For now, with the pricing and all, I'm not in too particular of a hurry to buy one. I'll probably buy one for the heck of it, but I'm not that much into handheld gaming.
On a side note, as far as games that interest me for both handhelds:
Nintendo DS:
Castlevania DS
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Sony PSP
Dynasty Warriors
Darkstalkers
Ridge Racer

What if Sony releases more stuff that is umd based? Or is it definite that umds are PSP only?

IMO, YES! I ve been looking at pictures of games in Play Magazine, and some are just stellar, near or equal to PS2 quality. The PSP will also house a nifty HD screen, making all games crystal clear. If you have friends getting a PSP, that will be even cooler, cuz of the WiFi connectivity. In Ridge Racers, up to 8 ppl can race ( i think some games will allow up to 16 people to connect and play), up to 50 feet or 100 feet apart. If not for Ridge Racers, I might not be so escatic about getting a PSP at launch, but a little later. Because of RR, I cannnnnot resist. I love the hilly tracks of R3 and they are included in this rendition of Ridge Racer.

You still have a niche format. Say a film comes out on UMD. Why should I buy it when I can get the DVD, which will play on all players as opposed to the UMD version which will only play on PSP (or at best a handful of other Sony devices). Even if UMD did become popular, the storage capacity and video quality is too low for me to consider buying it.
Jon
March 16th, 2005, 02:50 PM
Yep, Sharp-Kun is right. Sure the Spidey 2 UMD might be worth 40$, but since everyone has a DVD player these days, you can get spidey 2 used for like 10 bucks on DVD. Why should I buy my first sony consle now? Maybe I'll wait and see if 250 dollars is even worth it. I'll stick with my GBA, and wait for the gameboy2, because I know Nintendo will put an affordable price on it.

I feel pretty confident when I say Nintendo's next Game Boy will blow the PSP out of the water even though the PSP is pretty impressive as is.
I also don't own a copy of Spidey 2 on DVD, so I have this "why not" feeling getting the PSP(with the free Spidey 2 UMD as a "bonus", and dang it, Ridge Racers gets my juices going. I also don't own a PS or PS2.

I heard several PSPs in Japan had problems. Dead pixels and non-working analog nubs. The biggest problem, I heard, was the "square" button. Because it's so close to the screen it's necessary to have the electronics off to the side, rather than underneath the button, it didn't work. 5,000 were returned because of this.

I'm wondering about the other functions of the PSP. If it gets a decent batt life for mp3s, I'll choose that over an iPod mini. I'm also wondering if any of the import owners are able to play avi's and other video files (basically, to watch anime). If that works, I'll definitely get it, since the next alternative is an Archos which can go around $400-$500+. The gaming aspect will be an extra to me even though it's the primary function of the PSP.

So you'd rather play Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is on the PSP, and which is alsmot an exact port, the same goes with um... I dunno about 80% of the PSP games being released. Also, we're gamers, we're not supposed to worry about how much battery life it's supposed to have or what settings we have to turn off, that's just bad on Sony's part, no one releases a product that's as flawed as the PSP, also accounting the prince of it
Oh, and RICMIaidoka, go to thescreensavers.com and look around, I remember that they had a tutorial on how to transfer videos to the PSP, but you also need to remember that you only get 2 hr of battery life while watching videos though...

Oh and the games for it are crap. The graphics are scarier than the PS1. The best looking games are Darkstalker and some other 2-D games.

Yeah, but remember, video files are about 150 MB, and four episodes are about 1 GB with the sound. So that means that means that you need a BIG memory stick, and the biggest out so far is only 128 MB... so, well, you'd get one ep per stick, and each stick costs at least $40 each

I'm not gonna knock the DS or PSP until they've been out for at least a year. At this point in time when each system is new and there's only a couple note-worthy titles, knocking one over the other would be talking completely out my ***.
Either way, I'm still feeling some excitement and hope the PSP comes to be a system with some quality titles to entice me to pick it up in a year or so. It's certainly got some potential.

Potential is why I like and want a PSP. Too bad I won't be getting it day one, but a week or two later, if I don't have a hard time hunting a PSP down. Supposedly a few movies will be available in UMD format at or after the launch of PSP , like Hellboy, RE: Apocalypse, and one or two movies.

I looked around that site Moose recommended but haven't found it yet. I'll dig some more but I did find their review of the PSP. Everything seemed ok except it mentioned running with it in the gym listening to mp3s wouldn't work. They mentioned price also, but the idea is that they're targeting those with more stable incomes. Getting a 1GB capacity flash memory is understandable for the anime part. It's not like I'll treat it as a portable HD.
I have a friend who's a gadget freak. I rarely see him now, but a few summers ago, he showed me a Chobits ep on his Sony Clie. I was able to watch it on the train. Being a student at the time, it wasn't that big of a deal, but with work, I haven't been able to watch much. So I wanna use some of my commuting time to watching anime if possible.

I don't know. The PSP won't matter until GT4 Mobile(but thats because I love GT so much). Every other game kind of sucks to me. Death Jr. is looking good though. I'll definitely pick it up this summer just for that game. But everything is....meh. Average. Vampire Saviour? Come on. Thats why I have a DC. Metal Gear Acid? Meh. Looks nice. I'll probably give it a try. Twisted Metal? Hmm......wait. This is the reason right now. So yes. I'm willing to throw out 300 dollars for just one game. ONE. And the wifi support is whats really attracting me to this title seeing as how we never got a TM online for the PS2. Everything else is either a sports title or a port.
Its a nice system. I played a bit off a stranger on the train. He had the JP version. Looked great. It was light. But very big for some reason. The pictures made it seem so small. And Sony will be releasing an upgraded battery in the near future. Of course people will hiss at the idea. But Sony doesn't care. People will buy it no matter what.

Also I don't know yet if the USA version of PSP can play import games.
Oh and the reason why I made the Nintendo DS screenshots topic, is because I was excited and wanted to show my DS, and show what it looks like for real. Not because of bashing PSP. The U.S. PSP will play import games. For some reason, handhelds don't have a region lock on them. Which is weird. It's worth the money in the end.
Yeah. Some people think you're bashing their favorite console just because you post some pics up to give ppl a taste of what they are going to get eventually. Thats why I don't make these kinds of threads and I generally stay away from them. Why? Because there are going to be those elitist *****s that will think their console is better because of some stupid factor they pull out of their a$$es. Nuts to that my friend. Nuts to that. 200 dollars+ for a handheld machine, when most console machines, with bigger libraries, cheaper games, costs less on a whole than the PSP, and from my understanding better reliability are out there...

I saw a review on Judgement Day on G4/Tech TV that compared the DS to the PSP. Overall, the reviewers gave the DS a 7.5/10, and the PSP a 9/10. Take what you will from that.
The thing about the PSP is that it's designed for more functionality than the DS. Nintendo, with their usual attitude, designed the DS soley with gaming in mind. But for some odd reason, they just don't have a lot of variety in their game selection.
Sony, I feel, knows the American consumer, in that they've made their device more functional, making it a gaming system, a movie player, and a music player. As with the PS2 vs. the Gamecube, they appear to have a lot more developers (anyone who has evidence of otherwise, I welcome the correction).
I notice a lot of talk saying many of the games on the PSP are just ports of PS2 games. Not sure about anyone else, but I'd like to have Dynasty Warriors anywhere I go, just for kicks. Or any of my fave PS2 games, I'd love to have 'em wherever I go. It's like saying "who would want mario on their game boy?"
As far as the price point, I'm not paying more than $100 for a handheld. So, I'll be waiting for a long time before I get either system (although I'd get a DS first, based on that math). For $250, I would rather buy a new PS2 and two games. But I just got a gamecube for christmas, so I'm going to be building up that collection for a while.
MightyDustLoop
March 20th, 2005, 07:55 PM
You know, and the DS has some N64 games. In the end, I don't really think either system has much of a game selection right now, but in a year or two one will probably have a noticeably more rounded selection than the other. If the consoles are any indication, it'd be the PSP, but it's a different ballpark. I'll let them duke it out for a while then pick one up.

The only problem I have is what game to get with it, I still can't decide....I’m currently thinking about TM but I'm also looking at Darkstalkers, Metal Gear and Dynasty warriors

Well. Looks like we're 12 hours away on the east coast. Gamestop is opening at midnight tonight. *Sigh* Wish I was there to get mines. But then again, I've never really purchased a console on launch date. And why should I go freeze my arse off and get wet in the rain tonight just for one game? Not really worth it.

The GS I reserved the PSP isn't having a midnight sale, but they are opening up at 8 am on Thursday. I guess the manager figured that the employees need to get to sleep early and get a good amount of rest to be able to handle the crowds on Thursday. I would do the same thing if I was in his/her shoes.
It's gonna be a madhouse at 7:59 am tomorrow morning.

Can't go wrong with Ridge Racer. I watched a few videos at gametrailers.com, can't wait to zip around the Heaven and Hell track.
I was looking at a paper cutout example of what the PSP will be like. It feels as if the screen is bigger than the PSP itself. I would say the screen itself takes up roughly 75% to 80% of the face side. The screen also is extra wide, fully widescreen.

Edit: Sony sneaked in twisted metal into the bundle, making it $289. And there was no Ridge racer at circuit city. Decided to wait, since Twisted metal sucks imo. I would never buy that crapper of a game franchise. I ll only buy a standalone or a bundlle with no damn sony game.

I'm amazed at how (locally) the PSP hasn't created a frenzy like the PS2 or Xbox. My example for this is that I went into Target and Walmart the day the system was released, and I bought a CD player, and didn't have to fight with hundreds of crazed fans. Was that just around here, or was that nationwide (in the U.S., but I'm curious about the launch in other countries, too).

There are always areas that have a lot more "gaming traffic" than others. I, for instance, went to ******* yesterday to get a DS game, and there wasn't any more people there than normal, and there were quite a few PSPs on the shelves. Bigger cities tend to have to big launches, and, from what I've heard, the PSP launch was quite successful.

It's pretty weird, there wasn't a huge PSP riot in my place. My local mall has five places to buy it (Wal-Mart, EB Games, Game Store, FYE, KB Toyes) and the total was only about 15. Oh, and the local one, game Store, had a bundle where it cost $250, but it included two games of your choice

After a whole weekend off from work and playing my PSP to death this is what I found out so far. The battery life is pretty good averaging around 5 hours before the green light began to blink. Twisted Metal is a darn good game, it reminds me so much of Twisted Metal 2 for PSX. Darkstalkers has had my hand hurting for some time. My thumb feels like its going to fall off. Loading times on TM are good while Darkstalkers is a tad long but nothing to cry over. Spiderman 2 looks nice but I don't think I will be buying UMD movies when they come out. Also my PSP has 3 dead pixels but they can only be seen whent the screen is black so I really don't have a problem with it.

Darkstalkers is an OK game. But the loading time could have been shortened and the characters are pretty uneven. Tower mode is awesome!
I am currently addicted to Lumines. The whole style of Lumines is so beautiful. My current favorite song is "I Hear The Music Of My Soul" by Eri Nobuchika. I just got to the 47th level on single mode. And in the Vs. I managed to get up to the 7th opponent.

Ok putting mp3s on is much easier then movies.
1.hook u psp to your pc using the cable
2. scroll over to settings in ur psp and go to usb connection
3. then open up the psp removeable disk on ur pc, then in that file u will need to create a folder called psp. ( u might have a file already but i didnt so i had to create one)
4.Now open up the psp file u made and then create another folder this time call it music.
5.then drag your mp3s into the music folder and it should work.

hes right the things they give you in the value pack are completly necesary: head sets for personal listening, the carrying case so you dont scratch the screen, you would need a memory stick eventualy, and even though you cant get it know spiderman 2 was realy nice on a handheld despite what others have said

The way I see it is with the 50 you'll save you could get a mem stick, better headset(the psp's are ear hurting crap), and a case that is actually good(Yes, I said good). While you're at it you could import spiderman 2 into your mem stick. Viola!
regus 5000
April 17th, 2005, 10:26 AM
that would cost more than 50, the head set may be laying around but you need a cable to import files to the psp, 9.99 then you may need more then a gig of memory, 150.99 for the 1gb mem stick, and also you have to buy the movie, priceless

10 bucks for a USB cable?! Whoever sold you that ripped you off, you should never have payed more than $5 (the PSP uses the same USB cable as several of sony's digital cameras). I'm fairly sure that you can get 1GB memory sticks for less than that aswell (I live in England though, so the pricing will probably be different for the memory stick over here).

in the us its 9 bucks for the cable; but i agree his idea of putting the movie on a memory stick is insane, maybe a few clips but not the entire thing

April 17th, 2005, 11:36 AM
You could up spiderman 2 on a memory stick, a film is usualy about 600MB on the PC, however a PSP's screen is far lower resoloution, so you wouldnt need nearly such a good encode. I'd say a 512MB stick would be able to fit it fine, with some space left over.

Me and my friend were looking for one, sold out, so we went to the usb cable section, 27.99, no others at best buy.
I'd like to mention this, I just can't get enough of it, it excites me so much :)
"i recently found a url with the PSP SDk for download and Code Warrior but the pearson changed the url... On his site he did post news for his dev group and he said some things about a web browser and starting on chat and writing to UMD's this is exactley what he said:
The web browser is finished i am still testing it i will post thedownload for it soon. I am starting on the Chat and it should be donein a few months. I am testing writing to a UMD. "
I found the torrent for the SDK, no use for me since Code Warrior seems to be a C/C++ dev kit, so I'm guessing apps are written in that.

Still, don't sway offtopic, Regus. I would love to have technology to write my own UMD's. Sony should sell this to make some profit off that, instead of letting "pirates" do it and make a living off it.

So if I had to choose between a value-pack or a better memstick/usb cable, i'd go with the second option. It's a miracle sony sold any Value packs in the first place. Considering they announced they'd release future PsP's with an upgraded batterypack in the future.

I'm planning on getting a new game this weekend. My two main choices are Dynasty Warriors or Ridge Racers, but I'm open to other suggestions. Give me suggestions of what to get.
Seraphim
April 19th, 2005, 02:10 PM
Well Dynasty Warriors is a bit of a dissapointment due to some nasty slowdown and the fact that the actual game only takes about 1/4 of the screen. Ridge Racer however is a fantastic game with great graphics and some of the funnest racing around.
I also recommend Lumines. If you like puzzle games this is the best one to come out in a long time. Its also an extrmely stylish game with its techno inspired music and trippy backgrounds.
Metal Gear Ac!d is pretty good but I warn you that it is an aquired taste. Just because you love the Metal Gear games doesnt mean youll love this games brand of turned based, meets card combat action.
Untold Legends is decent. Its similar to Diablo but it really doesnt have that games charm as it is filled with fantasy cliches and not much of a story. However its still incredibly fun just to hack and slash for hours leveling up you character and getting new equipment.
Ape escape is still the quirky fun platformer it was years ago and it is a very enjoyable game if your into that sort of thing.
Well thats all the games I have and my opinions on them. Hope it helps.

Ridge Racer, deftiniteley. I went to some lengths to get a copy of Ridge Racer recently. I played R4 on the PSone to death, and this rendition of the RR series classics unto one is easily one of the best RR ever. I own MGAc!d, RR, and THUG2 Remix. Not too sure what I want next other than GTA coming next month, unless there's delays with that.
Edit: whoa, wa sjust in circuit City and there are UMD's of Pirates of the Carribean and Kil bill vol.1... Didn't pick em' up though..

The release date is only estimated for around May/June, so I'm sure they will be pushing it back a month or so at least - also, I reckon they will reveal it at E3 :)

Gamestop has its date of release(GTA) at 5/17. I also wouldn't be surprised if this is all Rockstar's intenion to come out with a world exclusive soon with say, EGM, GI, or do it all at E3. GTA alone probably will sell a lot of PSP's.

I would count on GTA PSP being full blown 3D. It's supposedly set in Liberty City of GTA 3. GTA on GBA was top-down, so I expect PSP's GTA to be 3D. I also hope stuff like the bikes, swimming, multiplayer and more are added/included.

I would get Darkstalkers. Eye candy and multiplayer would rock. Although about Darkstalkers, I heard using the PSP can strain your thumb pulling all those quarter and half circles. Next Christmas I expect something different from the current valuepack. Honeslty a standalone PSP isn't worth it, because you will end up buying accessories for it that could have come with the valuepack. Also, Sony apparently pushed back the euro release of the PSP because of demand in Japan and the US, so I expect a new pack after Europe gets their PSP. Something tells me the PSP will be $250 for a while, it's the contents of the value pack that should change\improve with a bigger battery and memory stick.

The quality on these games is excellent for any handheld. And the battery life is a lot better than some would expect. The sound quality is also beautiful. No handheld can provide such sound. Ridge Racer sounds uber clear. Although the headphones suck hard. But either way, its worth the 300 dollars(obviously you're gonna get a game with it).

Its good. The half circles and quarter circles are a hassle to work on this thing. I prefer kind of saving your money or just trade in something to pay less. I kind of regret it, but it's still kind of worth it. I guess I have to really sit down with the game. I've been to busy with Ridge Racer and Hot Shots Golf lately.

Bleach looks amazing, from the one screenshot ilve seen. I'd go with Ridge Racer, unless you just don't like conceptual cars and a whole lotta of drifting. Scream across straightways upwards of 150 MPH, hit corners at 100+. Rr is pure racing nirvana IMO. And also the reason I wanted a PSP. Midnight club dub ed. Isnlt out yet though. NFSUndergound rivals looks pretty good from what I've seen of a video that came with NBA Streett showdown(don't buy that one, I traded it in for Dynasty warriors approximately 1 hour after buying NBast.
