Eh pretty cool isn't it? It took me 2 hrs to draw ^^
You guyz have all been very encouraging. Before, I'd stopped drawing for a while... because I felt it's rather useless :)
Now it feels fun, once again.

I gotta tell you, she's just the girl of my dream ^^ Sexy, yet classy, not trashy; Slender body, with a mysterious melachonlic face... like mishima (in Rahxephon) ehehehe...
Not to mention I spent literally hours creating her... [in no small part for the costume design and the hair] and still not done yet! One of these days I'll color her, enlarge the image and add more background. Hopefully I could make a wallpaper out of this one :) which'd be my frist.
A few minor adjustments

Anyways since the purpose of this thread is to combine all my artworks together, I'm gonna do just that.
Most of these drawings are drawn in class with ballpens :P you could really see the difference with the one above.

Sure you can can :) I guess if it fits yourstyle. Some ppl don't really like it. It wasn't very easy for me. It took a very loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggg time to draw them ^^. At least hours, but they were fun.

Thx, but uhh... I think my proportions still needs work
And I took a look at your work. They're good. I still dunno how to do some of the stuff you did. And poses :S I'm pretty bad at that, probably it's just coz you've drawn more than I did. I don't really like drawing dynamic poses, I like them sort of still, which sorta limit my choices.

Which of the two images above are more anatomically correct. I've been eyeballing this thing... and felt something was odd... so I touched it up and came up with the first image.
Second question is which one is better? Even if the 1st one is more "correct" I felt that the photoshop botch job ruined the dress :(
Edit: My take is the second one still looks better. As for the first one I'm not sure what I did >< It doesn't seem like it's much better. And the hand is too forward in its position, I think if it were a bit towards the back it'd have looked more natural.

Yeah, I like the Celia #2 pic better than the first one ^_^
The only diffrence I could detect in the 1st was the lines of her dress agreeing more with her stance and angle... in this reguard, I think the 1st was slightly better. But that could be fixed in the pencils as well, ne?
I like the action in your sketches, too! You might not have the most dynamic poses, but you obviously are trying for them, and that's commendable.
Adding color to deeply-penciled works... it's a fun process, that's for sure. I might take a swing at it once situations for me calm down a bit, if you'd like. I could use the practice, and not having to draw the picture gives me more ability to focus on colorizing the thing -_-;

Hey, Malchiel nice work!
I think it needs more detail, more shadows, etc. The Background looks trippy.. Did you use the smudge tool? The wave doesn't look bad either, very original. Make the sword/katana more bad A$$ man! Other than that I think it looks great! I would like to see more of your work. :)

March 17th, 2005, 06:34 AM
As for the girl with the sword, they both look correct , but the one on the right looks more interesting. I think she needs a little more butt though so she doesn't look top heavy.

March 17th, 2005, 09:49 AM
Aight thx for the kind comments. Lunay is right though, I need more shading.
@LC3 I think I figured out, what's wrong with that picture >< I need to make her right hip, higher, suit with her pose... kinda too late now. She's a pain to draw... took 2x letter sized paper :S just so that I could work on the details.
@Lady Akuma... hmmm not really you did better on coloring human body. I need more shades, more swatches ^^; I wish I could just mix them in photoshop like in real life. But I gues I prolly need a paintshop pro for that, or some later version of photoshop. Unless I missed out on a feature...
Also the hair is kinda hard to draw with a mouse ><, now if only I have a tablet pc or something. I want the hair to look like Celia's... but it's kinda hard to draw smooth curve and lines with a mouse.
Anyways thx for the comment, it's useful n encouraging.

You don't even want to see my first photoshop coloring. My Lord! Using photoshop just takes lots of practice. Play around with the brushes. Many artists use different settings. I switch it up each time I CG, but I prefer the default soft brush and I adjust the flow so the color looks soft. Some artists use a very low opacity and their work will look so smooth and cool.
Here's one of my favorite skin tutorials. It works with low opacity.
http://www.deviantart.com/view/13079229/
It may be hard to understand, but once you get the hang of an imaging program, it won't be so though. I believe he did the tut with photoshop, but it will work with any program that has those features.

Sorry, I know this isn't true, about "proptiont-problem" not in the latest ones. Sure there're mis-placed things, like the sandal strap on the right leg, the way the right hand fingers is holding the arrow, but I just don't think the proportion problem part is true.
I've been known to accept criticism, but I do discern which's right and which's wrong. If you insist there's a proportion problem though, I ask that you point out where it is.
For example legs are too short, it's supposed to be X timex the length of the body, etc.

3 ppl said that that this picture is very distorted, especially, waist downwards.
May be I'm blind, but I've looked at it for 10 mins and still can't see what they're talking about X_X First of all, her shins is 2/3 the length of her body, that's already long enough. Her legs are folded 90 degrees. So all that's showing are the shins. Honestly I'd question my opinion against the opinion of 2 ppl... but this time, I just can't see it.
edit » Okay somebody help me figure out what's wrong and be very specific. 3 ppl said, this pic is outta proportion, I can't see it, except for her boobs that is. They said hip and below is too small. Actually the ratio of Shoulder to waist, waist to hips is about 2 vs. 1. So that doesn't seem to be it. The shins as I said above, is the right length. Furthermore, if I remove the boobs altogether, I doubt all that would have mattered. If there's one thing wrong with this picture, that would be the left hand... Your help will be appreciated, thx.
SAB-CA
April 3rd, 2005, 02:05 PM
Try tracing the lower body of the pic over on another sheet of paper, giving it more volume there.
Try finding a reference of a similiar pose... see if that helps you balance the picture better. It's pretty difficult to figure out, I know, your pose is kinda "daring" in it's dynamics:)
Malchiel
April 3rd, 2005, 09:04 PM
Thx saab :) heh this is just a difficult one I guess :) But I think I know why. It's not so much the proportion as much as it is the pose itself or rather the anatomy ><
LadyAkuma
April 4th, 2005, 08:15 PM
If I have your permission, I would like to draw over this pic, and show you some things I would do. I dislike critiquing and would rather not, especially since I don't know all that much.
Malchiel
April 5th, 2005, 03:37 AM
Sure LA, u don't need permissions ^^ but gosh I hate that piece so much now. All I got was critique, and few of them were right. This is too small, that's too big duh >< I've a good eye for proportion, better than average. So I doubt I'm wrong. I suspect it's the anatomy or the pose itself that's problematic.
The idea here is that she's scurrying away from the bed... ><
But heh, may be I'm just obstinate
LadyAkuma
April 8th, 2005, 09:36 AM
Well, I couldn't do it. I couldn't draw over it without redrawing some parts, thus defeating the purpose of the image. Besides, who knows if I would have been "correct" with it. :/
I believe that the MOST problematic thing about it is the pose. I believe your intent was drawing her pulling away from the bed...so that can be an issue with how it was executed. Besides, no one's anatomy is perfect.
I wish I could explain myself better. Don't worry, everyone has these sort of pics, just work hard on the next one and forget about this one.
Malchiel
April 8th, 2005, 10:32 AM
Yea true that. That's what I think too. The pose itself is problematic. Not so much as the proportions. Thx for the cmnt ^^

Yeah kinda true. Nothing I couldn't live w/o. I think it's fine, ie. not too obvious besides ppl come in different proportions. It doesn't seem to stray too far from normal to me. And as a note this was done in pencil, that's why the lines are thick. I think after I vectored them and make the lines thinner the proportion will be closer to what it should be.
Thx for commenting.

I'd like to help out for a second if I may with a previous picture. I know this one is older, but some of the problems from it are still in your recent pictures. Just trying to help, and I hope you value this info, because I would have killed for it, when I was at your stage.
http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/karin5.jpg
I flipped your image around, so that maybe some of the problems stick out better. Part of the reason you might not be able to see errors is because after looking at an image for a while mistakes start to dissapear, flipping it can sometimes make the image look like a new one.
Your problem is almost strickly a proportional one, at least that is the one that is bringing your art down the most. The anatomy is fine for right now, until better proportions can be drawn from memory. I drew this one for you:
http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/karin5redo.jpg
although the foot sucks, hehe, you should notice a difference in proportion. Next think about weight, where the figure is, how it falls, what it is doing?
I decide the shoulder angle first, find the line of gravity, and then sweep of the figure, or it's action. Normally I find the sweep with blocked in torso and hip region drawn with blocky proportions quickly.
http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/karin5redo2.jpg
The black lines here are the shoulder angle, and line of gravity. The red lines show that support always tries to come back to the center of gravity in the grounded figure. Not exactly together, but they try to line back to that center...I'm still figuring it out myself. The yellow line is the sweep, or action line. Try to keep everything flowing with the sweep.
Well I hope this helps, if you have any questions let me know and I'll do my best to help!

Hey that's really neat! ^^ Finally after so long trying to figured out what's wrong with that picture lol XD
Thx for taking the effort to draw things.
Hey since you said you'll do your best to help, show me what I did wrong in the latest picture.
There're two things I can think of
-the neck is too long
-not exactly in the most relaxed position (the head)
As for the legs... :S they look like the right size to me. It does appear on the thin side, but not terribly so. Also if you trace the outer contour of the outlines, it'll further increase the size.
Thx Iksad. And hey post your pics here. You're the most helpful person in forum who seem to draw really well. The other good ones are kinda snobbish arnd here.

hey, I'm glad you appreciated it. I have a thread in this section, so look for it if you haven't seen it yet. Since you are asking for help, I will gladly give it to you. You have a good eye. The legs are an appropriate length, and the figure is in ok proportion length-wise. The torso, hips, and head are proportionately problematic though. Also the stance of the figure is a little too tilted, and shows no weight. You are doing well though, and your figure has good symmetry, and the face is nice. I flipped your image, and rotated it, although I rotated it a little too much. It was supposed to be more vertical. Anyways here is your drawing:
http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/necro4.jpg
If the figure were entirely vertical, there would still be some tilt because the legs are not supportive of the torso. The legs also appear skinny because the hips are not wide enough to be female. Legs can be skinny, but there is a natural round taper from the hips down for them to be sexy and support weight, and we all want sexy. hehe.
http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/necro5redo.jpg
try to keep the lines straight and simple.
http://home.comcast.net/~bissett5/necro5_2redo.jpg
Same method here. The black lines are shoulder angle and line of gravity. Very important! something has to come back to meet the line of gravity, the leg on the right in this case, comes back in. Since this leg holds the weight it pushes the hip up on that side. Red lines are pieces that come back to gravity line, yellow is sweep of the figure. The blue line is the angle of the hips. When you start the figure, if you are working from your imagination figure the size of the person out first, find the middle, find the shoulder angle and gravity...find the pose, and use blocks to block in the ribcage, hip area, and head. Develope the rest of the figure after that from the sweep line.
Hope it's helped! if you have any other questions or anything, I will try to help.

malchiel, are you doing those black and white line drawings with a pen brush on the computer, or are you doing them on paper then using a filter to get the effect? The filter won't teach you anything about learning the technique or style, it will also rob your art of charm.

Iksad, thx, but don't worry about it. It isn't a particular style I wanna develop. I did it because my original drawing is always very messy. Not to mention they're drawn on line paper in class. As such the filter does what I want, remove those lines and clean it up a bit. They aren't meant to showcase what I can do :)
Anyways I've just got a new tablet yay!! finally ^^ I'm so happy, I think this will mean my drawings will be entering a whole new level. There're just things you can't do with mouse that you can do with a pen/pencil.
So here's my first drawing with a tablet and ms. paint ^^

nah, I disagree. I've seen some amazing paintings done with a mouse. The tools don't make the artist, however you might feel more comfortable using one over the other.
The last drawing is good, it looks much better in paint than it does before you filter it in PS. It makes everything too blocky and disconnected. Now that you have a tablet, try drawing in PS with a pencil or pen brush, keep the radius of the pen larger than you'd normally draw, and you'll have a good variety of thin to thick strokes because of the presure of the tablet pen. This will create clean work, and you won't loose any roundness or form.

Hey thx iskhad :) To be honest I'm not so sure how great this tablet is anymore ^^; Okay it's convenient to be able to use a pen instead of a mouse. But it's not as convenient as using a pencil, coz the pen is so darn bulky and heavy. I guess it's better than mouse, but I still can't draw a straight line on a tablet like I could with a pencil. The line I draw tend to be wavy :/
I'll try out your suggestion of making the lines thicker. May be that'd solve it.

I like the Paint Version better than the Photoshop'd one:) Iksad's comments about the Pencil/Pen brush with large radius is right on; With pressure sensativity of a tablet, you can get quill-like strokes using that method. I don't remember if it's better to use a brush or an airbrush, rather than pencil, though; it's been a semi-long while since I've used a tablet -_-;
Taking the paint'd pic, and maybe shading it in photoshop... that should have good results:) You might find yourself getting Bowazi-style results if you really use the tablet well! (Which, I'd say, is a good thing :) )
Have fun with that tablet!
Edit/Add:
You know, I thought I commented on the guild wars pic... bah, reguardless, it loosk pretty good:) I'm not sure if her abs would be that much turned.... the lines give me the impression that she's turned to the right (her right) moreso than her shades show. Might just be me. Have you been playing the GW beta? I've just started to take note of the game, it sounds pretty cool!

Thx you two :) This thread been getting kinda lonely here, with me posting pics and nobody ever commented XD
And shindou about that pic, yea it's an alternative drawing style with a different theory.
Basically you draw the eyes larger, the nose, smaller. Then you increase the size of the forehead and shorten the chin. The result is a baby like appearance that's kinda cute.
What I can't decide though is which's better, the usual stuff with more realistic proportion, or the exaggerated one. I think the usual one is more unique though (cute but still realistic), the last one is a tad too japanese like (hence, less original). XD but that might just be me.
Anyhow if anybody read this, sound off your opinion.

Well her torso isn't facing the viewer =P (you should notice this since the way the shoulder muscles are shaped is pretty clear that it's not a head view. And she's spinning, so different parts of the body faces different direction. If you consider this, the hand is facing the right direction.
So she's indeed put on backwards =P It's not almost, it is.
But thx for the comment. =P

ok continuing c&c :
(chick with wings)
her body is too hard to make out and her feet are huge, the shading is nice and all but without proper anatomy and outline the drawing lacks substance, don't blur your lines too much when coloring unless it has a meaningful effect (ex. to help define perspective or in action shots) otherwise it's all just bells and whistles
(other chick)
if you look at her right hand it seems like it's angled inwards to her right, in which case her fingers should be showing, since that's an awkward position to have i'd suggest angling her right hand more to her left (outward) so it's centered towards the viewer and thus the fingers don't need to be showing. the shading on her shoulder makes her look bony (the point where the collar bone connects with the shoulder), in which case her arms are too muscular, since it's much less work to fix the shoulders you can just round out the shading a bit more
... i'm getting tired of c&c ... this is a lot of work

Merlyn's Latest Pic: I like the lips. The face... is it kinda... squished together? Or maybe it's the size of her nose? Hmmm... her bottom lip looks nice and shapely, and well rendered.
Alfa's Latest Pic: Heh, the irony. Being such an anime fan, I normally look at real women, and marvel at how small a humans head really looks in comparision to the rest of them. Here, in this one, as realistic as your muscle rendering and such is... I keep thinking about how big her head looks in comparision, lol. I like the muscle tone in her foward-reaching arm. The fingers are nice and well shapen, the palm blends into the arm a bit too much... A bit more contrast would help with that arm. I like her socks, too. A good take on those huge and bagy "anklewarmers", aye.
I always feel an idea of "seperation" between the elements in your pics. Newest shot-in-the-dark: maybe some more "self shading" would being some elements together? It might take a very specific picture setup, but It'd be nice to see something that character is interacting with cast some shadows on them. Your color rendering seems so 3D-render, so something else to hint towards depth and space in the pic might just help highten the concept.
Just something to think about!

@Sab-ca <_< looking like a render... <-- is this:
a) A complement
b) An insult
c) A fact
d) None of the above
;p
Hmmm, mostly [C], and then also [A]. A render generally has a depth of coloring and shades that's deeper than most traditional digital is willing to strive for. At the same time, Renders are also usually very shiny, because of the way most people handle their textures. (Lots of Specular Highlighting and the like. Shiny texture maps. LOADS of hotspots to the lighting.) So the strongest points I'm going for are:
a) The Coloring makes the image look as if it could exist in 3d space.
b) The lighting is really strong.
...Does that clear it up? :P C'mon, now, shouldn't the rest of my comment tell you if I'm insulting or complimenting you? XD Though it's more of a critical evaluation, more than anything.
-- Anywho, the new sketches....
Are you going to color the 2 females? Or the scribble? XD That latest one would be good for a silly childhood flashback... They do something similiar to that in the "Shadow Hearts: Covenant" game...

Finally it's done :)

hm, this pose reminds me of final fantasy 8?
the figure looks good, but the contrast from the back and the arm is not strong enough to pull them apart.
i love the high detail on the face and especially the hair.
however, because of that, the arm closest to us should be more detailed.

Oh, I really like this last one...it's very clean. I'd love to see it coloured, because colouring really seems to be a strong point for you. :-)

From the start to of this thread to the last page I have to say your drawing is very cool I really like the angel drawings and the last drawing. You put a lot of time into your drawings like the details you put into them as well and the colors are awesome. Keep up the great work!

Yeah, the color looks wonderful, as I thought it might. :-) However, something strange happened with her face. It looks a little more cartoony and flat. I think it's a proportion issue. The same thing is happening with the feet. But, as with your other art, the clothing is wonderful! Maybe I'll have to have you design some armor for my characters. My "artist" claims not to be any good with clothes. LOL

LC3: Thx :) I'm trying
Mavin: May be, but there're so many things to do :(
Sasami-riyo: Ekh I'm flattered :P But I'm no where near that good.
That said, please check the online story. The old pictures were wiped off my HD :( so... I'm working on rebuilding a better site, starting from scratch. Already bought the domain and the space.
