I've started to watch Fruits Basket and I'm liking what I see so far. The characers are becoming well developed even after two or three episodes and I really enjoy this. How appropriate that I'm watching this show during Chinese New Year :) How is the manga different from the series? I read that the manga was pretty long, so I'm wondering how the storyline or characters are different. Are there more characters in the manga than the anime? Is there a lot of meat to the characters which are introduced in the anime? No spoilers please!

The anime and manga are pretty similar, except that the anime doesn't continue through the whole story. The anime chooses an event in the manga and alters it slightly to make that the end of the story. The manga continues on after that point.
There are a few differences here and there. There are a few details in the manga that were left out in the anime. The anime also adds a few new scenes (mostly comedy ones). Also, the anime changes the order of a few minor scenes. And of course since the manga continues on pretty far past what the anime covers, the storyline continues on and more characters are introduced.
Both the anime and manga are really good, so I'd suggest checking out both versions. Maybe finish watching the anime, and then start reading the manga for the added details and longer story.

Also with the anime not all members of the Zodiac are revealed. I think it misses two of them. Right now the manga (what's been released in the US) isn't up to where the anime ended, but I'd assume all members will be revealed. And even though the anime was unfinished, so to speak, it ended at a spot that didn't leave you feeling too left out in the blue. It wraps up fairly nicely, so both versions are quite good.

Yeah, the anime never introduced who was the Horse and the Rooster of the Zodiac.
I have seen episodes 13-26 (Later I'll buy the first half of the series) and liked it very much. My favorite episode are the ones with Ayame and Ritsu in them. I wished Ritsu appeared in more than just 1 episode. He was hilarious. Showed that episode to my friend Vicente and he liked it.
I think the anime ended okay, I wished it would get a second season to continue with Akito's story. I kinda felt at the ending of the anime everybody just left him and went on with their lives with him to the side. I know he's supposed to be the villain of the series, but poor guy.
How long is the manga anyways?

Gosh I can't stand ritsu and he doesn't appear but like for a split second later in the manga..
Btw if they continue furuba anime which i doubt it, Akito big super wanky spoiler will cause you and many other fangirls to cry their eyes out :)

Nah, for once, an anime ending well even though the manga continued. Furuba ending well in the anime, but I was surprised that in the part that was suposed to be the end, in the manga neither Akito nor Yuki are seen, and it wasn't as big a deal about Kyou's mononke

I've seen the entire TV series and read up through volume six of the manga, and I'm pretty pleased as to how faithful the anime is, no major changes beyond sequence of events. One thing that surprised me a little was how Kyo's other form was handled in the manga. It really seemed like it wasn't such a big deal as it was in the anime.

I agree with you here. I felt really sorry for Akito, he was just so....so pathetic. I mean, he was not a sympathetic character, but I couldn't help but feel that way. In a situation like his, I think his cruelty was understandable. I can't wait for more of the manga to get published in the US, I hope Akito will get a little more development than in the anime.

I just started watching this (up to ep 6), and it was the first time I switched from sub to dub because I couldn't stand Yuki's (the rat guy) voice. It was waaaaay too feminine! He already looks like a total girl, and for him to have that high of a voice was just too weird. I mean, I don't mind women doing men's voices if it sounds OK (a good exmaple is Kenshin), but this was like a total girl talking. Aside from that, I really liked it. The dub was pretty good, even though Tohru's voice sounds a little too spacy. Definitely looking forward to the rest.

I totally agree about Yukis voice in sub. I am sure it was intentional for them to make Yukis voice so feminine, but I was too distracted by it.

I think the same way about Yuki's voice. All I could think when I kept hearing his voice was "Sailor Mercury" because she's the role I'm used to hearing the most from Aya Hisakawa. I think this is the first time I prefer the dubbed voice to the subbed voice!

I've only gotten a chance to see it once (which was in the dub) but it would be interesting to hear this myself. >_> The dub is really really good though (imo).

I always thought FUNimation did exceptionally well doing the English dub of Fruits Basket. I also enjoyed watching the dub over the original Japanese version. As far as your original question goes, I've seen the entire anime series but I've never read the manga, so I can't help you there, but I'd think it would equally great to read too. If you enjoyed the beginning of Fruits Basket, you'll enjoy watching it all thoughout because it's a really great series to watch and it's always fun to watch thoughout. It does get emotional and sad towards the end, but it's still very good and ends really greatly. ^_^

I started watching the anime (again) and I realized the manga is actually finishing up, so I would like to read it :)
Question is: Where in the manga does the anime end? I would like to pick up in the manga where the anime left off, since I heard there was little deviation between the two. I read somewhere it was chapter 36 (Volume 6?) but then somewhere else it was chapter 48 (Volume 8?). Does anyone know? Thanks!

The anime covers up to about volume 5 of the manga while taking some material from volumes 6 and 7, if I recall correctly. It's been a while since I read those volumes.

Thanks! And another question: Is Kyo's transformation in the manga or is that just an anime thing?

In the manga, which I felt was handled much better, although the anime's version of events is good too.

Wow are you serious? I thought Yuki's voice was perfect in the sub. It matched the way he looked, as well as his personality. It made sense for him to be voiced by a woman. And Hisakawa Aya is a fantastic seiyuu. Her Yuki performance was one of the best in the series IMO. I thought the dub voice was too low and bland, it just didn't work.
And I agree about Bailey's Tohru voice, only my opinion is almost certainly a lot more extreme (see my posts in page 3 of the Crayon Shin-chan thread).
Fruits Basket is one of my favorite series, and the sub is perfect, but I watched one ep of the dub at an anime club once and had to get up and leave after that one ep because I had a headache due to its (IMO) poor acting, voices bearing mostly no resemblance to the Japanese ones, and some of the worst pronounciation of Japanese names I've ever heard (as a life-long purist (especially on Japanese stuff) and sub/raw fan, this was too much). Every subject has its fans and enemies, and if anyone enjoys the dub it's fine, but for me it's maybe the worst uncut dub I've ever actually watched a full ep of (and I haven't watched a ton of dub anime in my time, but enough to make a decent list).
