You should watch the 13th episode and ya'll be impressed. Every episode gets better and better. The first few episodes are kinda good you have to be patient for a while for it to really get good.
For anyone who's interested Avatar the last Airbender has ended its first season and Nickelodeon has ordered 20 new episodes for a second season, expected to premiere early next year. Orginally posted by Show News June 15, 2005

Also, stop bumping your thread. It sucks and no one cares about it except for you.

So people can't like what they want anymore? It's bad to like Avatar, but if someone doesn't like Escaflowne they're not to be taken seriously? Honestly, I was never interested enough in Escaflowne to watch more than a little bit of a couple of episodes. Should I not be taken seriously now as well?
And hey, I actually liked Avatar too. If I weren't such a big Stargate geek, then I'd have watched more episodes of Avatar.

It probably had something to do with the fact that he went into my profile, found something on my favorites list and said it sucked in a way to try to stir up even more ****. That is called trolling, and it is a bannable offense if it's repeatedly done. Either way, he needs to grow up and stop bumping his thread.

Yeah. Exactly. You my friend (Devyndrynn) are either a person of minimal intelligence or a person who jumps to conclusions to easily. No you are not digging a grave. Avatar does blow a.s.s but that doesn't mean anything. I wasn't saying people who don't like Escaflowne shouldn't be taken seriously, I was saying that a little kid who preaches Avatar like Christianity and says that Escaflowne sucks just to piss off Irons is an idiot. Enough said. The only way you'd be digging a grave by "OUR STANDARDS" would be if you keep up that attitude.

wow, such bitterness, trivial bitterness at that. well respectedly, I applaude those who express their opinions with calm and reason. Just my two cents, I agree with alot of people about the poor quality of the animatoin (to certain extents), the sub-par story, and some of the annoying voicing (which we all should be reminded that they are kids, so they should be annoying, but yes it does sound like alot of bad english dubbing).
However, there are certain things to commend them for. First being, the design of the culture. Obviously asian influenced, it depicts that well, with the buildings and the landscape, but more so with the weapons and the costume designs (I am very fond of the fire nation military uniforms). The second being the fight scenes. Very well choreographed fight scenes. Very fluid shots and a restrictive use of cuts. I very much dispise fight scenes with alot of cuts. I prefer to see a punch, rather than the illusion. The fights themselves are also fluid. Very "wu shu", if that is the correct phrase. The integration of the "bending" itself with the fighting seems harmonious. Rarely do I see the bending as being bending of itself, I always see it inconjunction with a physical move, whether that be a set-up, or a follow-through. Third is the music. I know it is not "all" that great, but it is still good, especially during the fights scenes, when it sounds a little Tan Dun, but watered down a bit.
To those whom believe the characters are too boring, due to the story. It is agreeable, but there is a very good character to take notice of: Prince Zuko. Prince Zuko has a very good character arc because his character is depicted as being very dynamic. In the story, he is first introduced as a ruthless soldier, but as the series progresses you see his lighter side. You see that he is a much more human character. You see him show mercy and care for his subordinates, and with faith to confuscian thought, he is respectful to his father and especially his uncle. You see his inner struggle between his duties and his beliefs. His scar is testament of this. I think he makes a better protagonist because he is more true to the teachings of Joseph Campbells, but in the internal sense. I am very giddy and can't wait to see his epiphany, followed by his catharsis (which will probably be him laughing, a big thumbs up from me if he does). While I wait, I shall continue to enjoy his fights, which almost never let me down in entertaintment and as an art form. Zuko surely would have been a better choice for a protagonist, but it is understandable why Aang was chosen, considering the target audience. I am still grateful they show Aang as much as Zuko.
Well this is my discussion piece for this Thread, which has indeed gotten out of hand. I look forward to seeing someone reply to my opinion.
To the person being flamed: I hope this is what you were hoping to read when you created the thread. Please do not let such trivial words get to you especially the ones that were a little verbose. Anger is a weakness of the heart and vengeance is one of its many manifestations. The flamers seems angry, let them be. You will be a greater person for not acting upon it.

P.S. Just because someone likes a certain anime, doesn't mean their opinion is valued any less. It just means that find something in that anime that either strikes their fancy, which may be personal taste or professional insight. I can't stand Excel Saga (which, in all its humor just isn't funny to me, neither is alot of Naruto jokes). I still enjoy watching Digimon second season, which was a very mature season with all the dynamics of story it touches upon, and I enjoy Disney's "Kim Possible" because of its sarcastic, dry, and whitty humor (regardless of some of the bad puns). My favorite character is Dr. Draken because of his overly dramatic personality combined with his assitant's sarcastic personality.

Anime is definitely annotated as being anything that is Japanese Animation, but it still leaves room for "American Anime". There already is American Manga. Psychic Academy and that one manga starring Courtney Love are both drawn by Americans in America. Some more food for thought is that Vampire D Hunter: Bloodlust was not created by Japan, but by America.
I think that one quote I read previously from this forum by the creator of avatar was right, Anime is " a right in cultural exchange every artist on Earth shares as a natural given. It is unalterable ". Anime, like Manga, is an artistic movement. Avatar should be defined by its artistic influences. Avatar is an American Anime.

Yes, if you read the previous posts. Alot of people, especially the people flaming sicklee detest this Amerime (I wish I could put an accent mark on that). Some of it is personal taste, which I perfectly understand, but some of it is just blatant dispisal. There really is alot of good to be found in this anime. I am enjoying the music very much. GO DRUMS!!!
The latest episode I saw was when Prince Zuko is resueing Aang. His duel-sword wielding is just gorgeous. Just loved him cutting off the head of one of the spears, and searing the rest of the spear in half. Seemed flawless and fluid in motion.
To HARUKAKANATA: O.O;;. Please be calm. It is not worth your time and effort to respond to just pointless taunts. And thank you again for "Amerime", I think I will make it permanent staple in my vocabulary. Who knows, maybe it will catch on, and one day everyone will use the term. XD
What is GA tech? If it makes you feel any better I am attend one of the many Art Institutes of the world, even though I am a programmer. : ) Many people have told me I am wasting my talents, some even say that I am good for nothing because I attend that school...anyways... feel better. :P
To Iron -
Cartoon is a very generic term. It would be like calling Van Gogh's Sunflowers as just a painting or Escher's Liberation as just a drawing. Even something simple like my friend's To See the World is more than just a art piece. It surrealist, graphic art, and minimalist. Anime is not a contemporary term to be confined to silly zealous notions. Anime is an art term and as with all art, it is loose and malliable to human creativity.
- Hitoriga
P.S. Anime is a french term really? I always thought that it was a word derived from the word "Japanimation" and given and accent mark to make it sound cool. Like Haagen-Daaz. The Umlat (pardon my attempt at German spelling) on the "A"s were intentionaly put to make give it a foreign feel.

I don't think he meant it as an actual french word, but rather a commonplace word that the french used to describe Japanese Animation, but then got translated into commonplace english.
Irons

Actually he is kind of right. Anime is derived from the word animation which is french. Anime itself however is not a french word.
It's much like the way automóvil, the Spanish word for automobile, is derived from English.
These are called cognates.

Man I absolutely love this show. It's totally excellent.
I really wish it had more bite to it, but unfortunately that could be said of a lot of anime also. When the show does have bite it's just gorgeous, my favorite moment thus far is when Aang is captured by the Fire Nation and Prince Zuko is freeing him in disguise, and so later Prince Zuko is lying in the forest and he wakes up and Aang tells him a story about his friend from the Fire Nation and then Prince Zuko shoots a fire blast at him and Aang goes away in the trees. That was wonderful.

In that firebending episode (that was the latest one, right?) I loved when (spoilers, 'course) he was talking to the master and then it was Avatar Roku there for a second. I hope by the end of the series we get to see a strong adult Aang like that.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious that it wasn't anime. Still some beautiful animation, though. At first, I thought I wouldn't like it, but from the few episodes I've seen, the show is really nice. I have a question about Avatar the last Airbender & an anime convention.
Well my friend wants to go to an anime convention dressed up as a character from the show Avatar, but of course we all know that its American anime. So would my friend look like an odd ball dressed up as an American anime character at an anime convention???
He said he doesn't really care what other people would think of him as long as he is enjoying himself.
Oh ya he also said if he did change his mind this would be the next steps
His second choice is Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist and the 3rd choice is something from Kingdom Hearts which I forgot.
NakedEYE666
October 29th, 2005, 11:24 AM
If he doesn't care what people would think of him then he should definetly go as a character from Avatar. I for one would love it if I saw somebody do it.
I was at Otakon in summer and there were tons of American animated characters like Superman and Harvey Birdman and stuff like that. I did hear one guy say that you should kill yourself if you go to an anime convention dressed as something american, but that guy was obviously a pathetic loser who needs therapy to fix his idiotic brain. ;)

I remember watching Anime Selects coverage on Anime Expo (you people should watch it on Anime Selects onOnDemand). There were these two girls dressed as Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy (Probably my favorite female villain pairing).
If they didn't encounter crazy loer anime fans, it's probably because no one ever acuses Batman of trying to be anime. But, there's this whole thing about Avatar. I don't think Avatar is trying to be an anime series. It's actually better than most of the shounen crap we watch. It's probably the eyes, which are actually proportional to the characters' faces (unlike the gigantic conventional anime eyes. Still nothing wrong with the huge anime eyes).
Although, there are those crazed, obsessive fans, so someone might have some beef.

For anyone who is interested you might want to mark this on your calendar the Avatar the last Airbender season finale is this Friday 12/2 at 8:00 pm ET.
You might want to start watching Avatar around 7:53 pm ET because Nick has been showing their shows earlier on Fridays then they are attended to thats if you don't want miss the begining of the show.
The season finale of book one: Water is going to be GREAT. Even if you never seen Avatar the last Airbender you might want to watch it, and after you watch this hour long season finale your brain is gonna insist on you watching the previous episodes.
I can't wait for this Friday to come

I can only watch it in order, I refuse to watch any anime or show like this out of order & can never skip any.
I'm just gonna wait for the DVD releases myself, even though it will take a while. Will the DVDs have 5.1 audio?
I don't think they have announce that part of the dvd yet. I couldn't find any info if DVDs will support 5.1 audio or not.

Theres know reason to be sad Avatar is very popular across the nation it even got an award for best Adventure/Action genre of the of the year.
Avatar brought Nick out of the dark, Nick's TV ratings has been sky rocking ever since Avatar had its debut.
The creators of the show thought people would catch on after a while but that was wrong.
Anyway I think Aang is going to learn the elements in order like they say.
Water, Earth, and then Fire
Katara and Aang are both learing Waterbending right now if you seen episode 18. There waterbending master name is Poncho if thats spelled correctly.
Aang had a chance to learn firebending sooner than expected but Admiral Zhou messed that up.

For anyone who is interested the Avatar dvd comes out tommorrow which will be January the 31st. The DVD only contains episodes 1-4. You have to give the show a while to get good it may seem kiddy at first but it gets serious and better as the show developes.

I started watching it a few weeks ago, I didnt know it started in 2005.I have been watching the old eps on the "Nicktoons" channel, but they seem to keep showing the same ones. And I never see the show come on the actual "Nick" channel, is that the channel the movie is going to come on?
The show being on Nick turned me off at first, but after watching and liking it, I kinda ignore it being on Nick. It wasnt really Nick who made it anway, they are just the ones who broadcast it, maybe Nick just gave the creators lots of money to put it on their channel or something lol.

The reason why no more new episodes are comming on Nick because there in the process of making new episodes. I remeber they did that last summer they stopped at the 13th episode, and didn't show the rest of first season till that fall. They still show the old episodes on Nick Saturdays at 12et/11c. The tv moive is comming on the regular Nick channel.

Please pardon my comments if they are a little bit inaccurate, as they are only based on what little of the show I've seen. From what I've seen, it isn't a bad show at all, as far as being American made for a children's network.
The production values are pretty high, & though it is aimed at kids, it isn't dumbed up terribly, i.e. death, war, & romance is not shied away from totally, & the bad guys generally have an intent to kill. People do use their weapons, though you don't see blood & guts, but the they do, & the bad guys are not robots.
Anyway, I don't mind it at all. One of the best American cartoons around as of late.

You simply go to the iTunes music store, & on the left you click the link for "TV Shows" & then from there you click the "Nickelodeon" on the left side. Once you are there Avatar should be easy to find. You can see a clip from the show too.
It's $1.99 per episode, or you can get a season pass for $29.99, you save about 10 bucks for 20 episodes on the first season. There are 9 episodes of the second so far.

Ok, now this is what we call a Wanime (wannabe anime). and american cartoons are getting closer and closer to looking exactly like anime. Looks like anime to me. If you separated the sound track from the visuals and showed it to somebody with no familiarity, they would say it's anime and might even tell you the show is from Japan.
As for Xiaolin Showdown, that show is parody at best (and poorly done homage at worst).

I guess Avatar has anime style art, but what else would the creators use to make this kind of show? American style (whatever that really is) would be extremely crappy. So even though it kinda borrows the anime style, I sill like it. (which it prettymuch has any right as a jap person does to, as I've said before - where an artist is born shouldn't confine them as to what sort of style to use, and right now, of course, anime style is the best/coolest/what have you)

It really isn't so much an animation style thing just more of a cultural prospective. Take Power Puff Girls for instant. The one made in America probably wouldn’t be considered but the one made in Japan is considered anime because of it was made through the lens of the Japanese mind.

Yeah I guess I'm just baffled on what to call it exactly heh. And calling it a cartoon just seems to shed a bad light on it kind of (not that all of them are bad, but most do suck), but I might have to end up calling it that, I guess.

Personally, I don't see the big deal about style similarities. Japanese animation is influenced by early American animation, and now American animation is influenced by Japanese animation. Its just an accepted fact that in the world of art: new artists and styles are influenced by the artists and styles that came beforehand. Some just do it off better than others, and Avatar is one of them (unlike EVERYTHING that comes out of Marathon studios....blah)
So just drop the purist, elitist attitudes and enjoy a good show for what it is.

Yeah, the second season just ended Friday (Dec. 1). And yeah, it definitely ended with a dark tone. Reminded me of Empire Strikes Back or somethin. Overall, awesome season!
BTW, I noticed several posts from people saying they are awaiting boxsets of the series. Just in case anyone didn't know, the first season boxset has been out since August.
I'm already awaiting the second box set (and the first was pretty good, if the extras were a little basic and lacked emphasis), it's too bad it probably won't be out until August 2007, since the first DVD of season 2 won't be released until January.
On a side note, with the darker ending to season 2, I actually have even more respect for the series than I did before.

If you want to be technical about it, Anime is Japanese for all kinds of animation, so under that definition, this show still counts. BTW, Wikipedia is not a reputable source and is subject to inaccurate changes (It currently says "anime sucks its fans dont leave home and it is not intresting")

Ummmm.....first off, Wikipedia sucks. Don't be a spaz.
Second, who cares if its not?
Third, "anime" is a Japanese term that refers to animation, so unless you think the magic moving pictures on the screen are real, it is technically anime. It just simply wasn't conceived by Japanese artists. It all gets animated in the same place anyway. Korea or Taiwan or some other such place.
Fourth, if you don't like anime, why are you even here flaming the forums? Take a hike! Go find some people in the real world that will put up with you.

I think you're missing the point here...that wasn't even the purpose of my post. Why don't you put some though into you're arguments before making them.
Besides, did you even bother to click the link? It was hacked. Thats precisely why Wikipedia sucks. Or at the very least, is vulnerable, inaccurate and overrated.

Does anyone know when season 3 will be aired? I just saw the season finale for the second and I can't wait for the 3rd. I am so impressed with this series. I hope they keep up the good work for the last season.

It is sooo frustrating. Not the show, gods no. I LOVE the show with a passion. But I live in singapore, and here they are just coming towards the end of the second season.
but its better than in england where they only showed half of the first season. THAT. SUCKED. >.>
