i'm taken aback by the fact that you above all persons didnt mention Midori & Seiji:shifty:

I was honestly thinking for about 10 minutes whether or not to put them. They are a really really good couple, but I looked at all of my anime, and I only picked the ones with a really longstanding romance. That isn't the only way to determine how good a couple is together, but all of the ones I picked have a romantic notion of knowing each other for a long time with something preventing the relationship, whether it be time, fate, or hesitation. All of these have spoilers as to why I picked them:

Junichi and Nemu: These two were in love with each other for a really long time. They just held their feelings back because they were worried about what others would think. Also there was the issue of Sakura. Probably about 10 years here.

Keitaro and Naru: They met when they were still really young. I think 15 years passed before they met again, and they held that promise to get into Tokyo University for all that time.

Aoi and Kaoru: Do I really need to say anything here?

Sakura and Syaoran: This is the shortest one on the list. They met and I believe it took 2 years in the anime, and 5/6 years(due to the epilogue jumping a few years) in the manga for them to get together. Going from rivals to a couple, in a very detailed, well paced, transition.

Fujitaka and Nadeshiko: Fell in love when they were 21 and 16 respectively. They were together for 11 years, and a lot happened in that time obviously. Plus Fujitaka still loves her as just much as he did when she was still alive. That's why this couple gets on the list.

Kenshin and Kaoru: I don't know the specific amount of time that they were together, but I know it was long in both the anime and manga. They went through a lot together, and at least in the manga they get a happy ending.

Usagi and Mamoru: Once again do I really need to say anything here?

As much as I wanted to put Seiji and Midori on the list, we only get to see them together for a very short period of time. It takes place all in one school year, so probably less than half a year. Of course Midori had her eyes on Seiji for 3 years prior to that, but for it to be a couple they actually have to be together, or at least know that the other person exists. I will say that at the end of the anime and manga, they would definitely qualify for my list. Midori finally got the courage to confront Seiji, and he finally realized how much he wanted to be with her(handled much differently in the manga), so at the very end, I have no doubt that they would be a very loving couple. Midori no Hibi(Midori Days) was more about the two becoming a couple then them experiencing life as a couple. In all of the anime I listed, the two people had both physical and emotional romantic interactions with each other. Obviously Seiji couldn't do much with Midori on his hand...don't go there...so the only time that they could be a couple was at the end, when they were technically meeting for the first time(which was solved by the diary).

unfortunately, Nagisa disagrees with you. this is one of those cases where love takes you in directions you don't want to go. Nagisa wanted to take a ride on the Shizuma express the moment she saw her. While Shizuma wasn't the most gregarious person in the series, I rather like her real personality which only emerged at the end (and in flashback.)

I think a happy, frivolous Shizuma is darn cute. (before extreme personal tragedy caused her to change into the brooding angst-o-matic she was in the series.

BTW: I didn't mention Chikaru and Kizuna from Strawberry Panic! (even though they're my favorite) because Chikaru + Anyone=WIN and would cancel out all other couples.
Furthermore, Chikaru's awesomeness could be potentially dangerous; turning any girl within a 100 mile radius instantly gay. :P

unfortunately, Nagisa disagrees with you.
Well, people don't always make the best descisons when it comes to love, right? :naughty:

While Shizuma wasn't the most gregarious person in the series, I rather like her real personality which only emerged at the end (and in flashback.)
It wasn't so much her gregariosness (or lack there of) that bothered me. My problem was that despite a few points in the anime where I almost started to like Shizuma (those flash-backs you are referring to), by the end of the series I had written her off as a selfish, self-absorbed jerk who didn't seem to care much about anyone's feelings but her own.

Just to show you where I am coming from, this is how I viewed some of Shuzuma's actions:


In my opinion, she came across much too aggressivly in her first meeting with Nagisa, taking advantage of her looks and charsima to overwhelm an innocent young girl (more like a predator than a seductress).
Somewhere around the middle of the series she came near commiting what looked suspiciously like "date rape" to me. It was only Shizuma's flashbacks to her dead lover that gave Nagisa the opportunity to flee.
Then, when Nagisa was finally ready to take their releationship to the next level, Shizuma hurt her feelings terribly at the summer house and never appologized to Nagisa for that or ever seemed to express any regret or even awareness of the fact.
Finally, after giving Tamao the "green light" with regards to Nagisa, she swooped in just when Tamao's joy was at it's peak, and "stole" the love she finally though she had gained away from her. This last also caused me to be disappointed in Nagisa. After all, she made a commitment to Tamao, but then dropper her like a hot potato when Shizura showed back up.

I will admit there were reasons for the way she was, but I just didn't find those sufficient excuse for the way Shizuru treated others (Nagisa in particular).

Perhaps this is just an example of how a viewers opinion can color the way they see events. Looking at an example of how her "personality emerged at the end":

At the end of the last episode, after they run away from the cerimony together, Nagisa asks Shizuma what they are going to do, and Shuzuma tells her "I just had a wim to snatch you away".
I'm sure the producers meant that to sound cool and carefree, but to me is just sounded selfish and uncaring.

I don't really mean to say you are wrong in liking the anime as I'm sure that it wasn't the intention of the producers to make Shizuma so unsympathetic. That was how I saw the character, however, and that was what ruined the Shizuma/Nagisa relationship for me. :(

Perhaps my opinion is also influenced by the fact that I watched the first season of Marimite just before I watched Strawberry Panic!. The basic story and characters are so similar between the two, and Marimite does it so much better, that Strawberry Panic! really suffers in comparison.

True! Chikaru Minamoto was without a doubt my favorite character in the series. If the whole thing had been centered around her instead it would have been 100X better. :D

I also liked Amane and Hikare's relationship in the anime. That was another example of what I saw as the major flaw of the series (ignoring for a moment my feelings about the Shuzuma/Nagisa relationship). Many of the supporting characters (Chikaru, Amane, Hikare, Yaya, Chiyo and Tamao) were both more likeable and more interesting than the main characters. I kept wishing they had just cut Shizuma and Nagisa out all together, and just concentrated on the others. :rolleyes:

I, for one, tend not to care much for romantic subplots, let alone ship two characters that have barely any screentime together. But as long as a pairing is portrayed realistically and doesn't eat up most of the series when it shouldn't, I'm alright with it.
