i don't really know. =P i think berserk is one of the longest currently running (in terms of time when it was first published) even though it has fewer volumes. =P another guess would be inuyasha. sazaesan would probably be the longest manga ever period.

Kochikame's volume count is already over a hundred and is still running in Shonen Jump I think. That'd probably be the longest currently running.
...There's a sazaesan manga?

To Hisoka: Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koenmae Hashutsujo (This is the Katsushika Ward Police Box in front of Kameari Park) is the longest running manga (to my knowledge), having run in Shonen Jump since 1976.
To wyrd: Yes, but not in the way you're thinking of. Sazae-san was actually a newspaper comic strip that first began running in the 1940's. I don't know if it's still running today though.

There's also "Dokaben", a baseball manga that has been running in Shonen Champion (published by Akita Shoten) since the 1970's (I believe).
I'm not sure, but I think "Glass no Kamen" (first serialzied in the 1970's) is still running in Hakusensha's "Hana to Yume" magazine. Either that, or it ended (the most recent volume came out last year I believe).
Oh, and Ichirou Ohgami, just so you know (in case you didn't already), the "Z" only applies to the anime; all 42 volumes of the manga are known as simply "Dragon Ball" in Japan. Viz used the "Z" name for everything beginning with the Saiyans saga in order to avoid confusion.

Besides Kochikame, another long-running manga is Golgo 13 by Saitou Takao which count something like 130+ volumes.
Tama83 : Glass no Kamen counts 42 volumes and have been running since 1976, but is still not finished.
Another long-running shoujo series is Patariro by Maya Mineo with 70+volumes. There have been an anime adaptation in the 80s, and another one is coming this year (Patariro Seiyuki).

I stand corrected. It's serialized in Big Comics, but the graphic novels are published by another company (a company called Leed, who first started publishing them in 1989). What's up with that?

I know, but they're dang thick and the pages have more and bigger pictures. Suppose that were modified to be a smaller manga I imagine it'd get stretched out to way more than 6 volumes. Akira probably isn't the longest manga though. But the volumes are dang thick like no other manga.

I'm suprised that Sazae-san may still be going. When I left Japan (way back in the mid-80's) they had stopped running it in the paper. I remember that soon after Hasegawa died they brought it back for a little while to remember her contributions. I only really watch the anime though and havn't even looked at a Japanese newspaper in almost 2 years.

It for sure hasn`t been running in HanaYume regularly in the last 3 years. In fact, I can`t remember if I`ve even seen it in a single chapter of it, as I buy nearly every one (for those of you that read Japanese, I HIGHLY recommend "Golden Days", whichs runs in. It`s fanTAStic), but I have no idea if it ever officially ended. I just know it`s publication was erratic (and if it hasn`t really ended, still is apparently!). Perhaps it was moved to another magazine? That happens on occassion.

Yup, Steel Ball Run is a part of the JoJo saga, the seventh part in fact. Although, according to Wiki, it wasn't declared it was part of the JoJo saga until recently (which is why people, including me, thought they were two different titles).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Ball_Run
Nah, in terms of time, Golgo 13 is the longest running, Kochikame is second. But in terms of total volumes, Kochikame is king. I think Jojo was the longest Jump title so far.

WHAT!?!??!?!! those manga released are HALF the size of what they're supposed to be!? ive only read 2 full volumes and looked at the end of the "8th" volume. from what i understand the OVAs cover the first 8. because of differences between the anime and the manga, its dead on. but half the size!? thats not right.
i know its been canceled for a while, because of lack of sales. no surprise, because its a pretty much unknown series. which is a damn shame, because this one is a classic.

It's not quite as bad as that. Most of the DH volumes are indeed thinner than the Japanese volumes, but not by half (except for volume 2-4). The 8 DH trades should cover (roughly) the first 6 of the Japanese volumes (all of which have about 240 pages per volume).
Remember: that was still the time (1995-2002) when the real money came from monthlies, not collections. Why tailor a US-collection exactly after an existing Japanese collection if you don't want/need neither the format nor layout and page-count? Also it was seen as a plus to have less cliffhangers and more completed story-arcs, if possible. The Japanese collections just chopped off the story when a certain page-count was reached.
Only after the advent of the pocket-book format and unflipped releases did it make sense to just use the same subdivisions as the original editions, even if it was only as a means to create more meaningful groupings of content for licensing ("I'll have the first 5 volumes of that, please")... that last bit being pure speculation, of course ;)
And getting back on topic:
The best-known long series have probably all been named by now: Kochi-kame, Golgo 13, Oishinbo, Patariro, Hajime no Ippo, and probably a dozen others that aren't as well-known (or quite a bit shorter). If a series has less than 40 volumes, it probably wouldn't even qualify for a top 30 of longest series (though that's a very rough guess... could be off by a dozen either way).

O_O OMFG How much does each volume cost? I could only imagine having to buy each volume when one comes out. Heck with the money you saved from not buying it you could probably buy a PS3 a 360 and have plenty to spare even if each volume was only 7 bucks including tax!

It's not out in english and manga's cheaper in Japan. If you were a long time fan of it you would have built up your collection over the years and it would seem to barley cost a thing.
