German in Evangelion?

She never says anything important. If I remember Grant inserts a lot of german. In the japanese whe speaks german twice. First time is teh first time we meet her and she does a system check in german. Stuff like "LCL (insert word I forgot) veshtaidict (< horrible spelling). Second time is when her step mom calls and she says things like Auf viedehauen, junge de (grr not de thats japanese)zehr populair. Just saying shes popular and good night is all.

When ADV initially did their dub of Eva, they decided to give Asuka more German phrases to make her more convincing. So rather than her calling Shinji "baka" she calls him "dumpkoff" and rather than saying "tch" she says "shiest". And when Gaijin productions did the dub work for the movies, that passed over as well.

I understand what they were trying to achieve, but I still don't agree to taking artistic license with someone else's work.

Or at least, more like movie Germans (or in particular Nazis in bad war movies). Though her attempting to synch in ep#8 is realistic, Shinji's concomintent attempts at thinking in German are rendered more humourous in the dub.

So rather than her calling Shinji "baka" she calls him "dumpkoff" and rather than saying "tch" she says "shiest".

That's "dummkopf" (an archaic form equivalent to "blockhead") and "scheiße" where ß is the slightly archaic form of "ss".

The Japanese version of Asuka does call Shinji dumpkoff once, in episode 16. Didn't sound a whole lot like it though, but then not really any of her German sounds convicing. At least a lot of effort was put force in preparing Yuko for that role.

Sauber means, pure, or things similar to nice, upstanding that sort of things. Anyway it is a compliment, where did we discuss this and who did we decide the compliment was aimed at?

I did a (partial) translation a while ago. I based some of it off another translation I found, becuase my ability with spoken German is a lot worse than my ability with it written down.

Format: Germans words (English translation)

Asuka : Hallo, Mutter. (Hello, mother.)
Asuka : Wir haben uns lange nichts gehoert. (We haven't talked in awhile).
Asuka : Danke schön... (Thank you very much)

Cue Shinji listening to Asuka talking to her mum: "Listening to her speaking an unfamiliar language, I feel as if Asuka were a stranger."

Asuka : Ah ha! Niemals! (Ah ha! Never!)
Asuka : Er ist ein sauber Mensch. (He's a nice guy)
Asuka : Ja. Ja. Wirklich? (Yes. Yes. Really?)
Asuka : Das ist aber toll. Fantastisch! (That is great. Fantastic!)

Cue Shinji again being all Angst(not the straight German translation either) ridden: "Mother"

Asuka : Auch, wenn ich gehts keine lerne. (Also, when I got I don't learn anything)
Asuka : Ich werde jetzt ins Bett gehen. (I might go to bed now)
Asuka : Gute Nacht. (Good night)

Also IIRC there is a bit that goes in there somewhere where Asuka asks her mother if she has to introduce "him" (i.e. Shinji, who answered the pone), and her mother asks if he is her boyfriend, to which Asuka replies, "Are you kidding?!? Of course not! He's not really sociable>". Typical Asuka . I think Miyamura understood her character very well.

Lol, clean nice guy, not shinji by the end that's for sure ;) I think it refurs to shinji, clean and nice seem to be a good description. In a way Shinji saying Asuka appears like a stranger gives the impression of their slate being wiped clean and he sees her in a new light, maybe just for the time she's on the phone maybe longer, maybe this also spreads across onto asuka.
