now, Grave of the Fireflies is supposed to be the biggest tearjerker and the ping pong club the crassest one. but which one anime can be considered to be the scariest ever? not scary as in hellraiser and house on the haunted hill, we are talking here blair witch and ju-on (of course the japanese one) scary.
i am yet to see an anime show or movie or OAV that can give me goosebumps.
any takers?

xxxholic, which is a manga, seemed a little freaky. It might be scary if it was an anime.

Anime is intended to be as realistic as possible, you haven't seen a scarey one yet.

Anime has yet to learn how to be really scary. End of Evangelion and perhaps Hellsing have only managed to create the initial atmosphere of scaryness. Still need those basic elements often seen in movies. The "sudden-sound" trick is yet to be even used.

You're thinking too correspondence to AMERICAN CARTOONS. Well, I suppose I see where you're getting at. It really depends on the seriousness (That a word?) of the anime.

Akira is a neo-apocalypsic anime in which the end of the world is about to come.
I have seen only about 10-15 minutes of Akira. But I can never forget the scene of the city crumbling like glass and a car full of people was running on a bridge that's collapsing.

I've never seen an anime that was scary, though Genocyber did startle me (like in those "yaaahhh" moments in sci-fi films when a monster jumps out of nowhere). I do love creepy anime though... stuff like Reqiem for the Darkness, Blood Reign, Vampire Miyu OAVs, Magnetic Rose, Vampire Hunter D (both versions), Petshop of Horrors, Nightwalker, Demon City Shinjuku, etc.

Come to think of it, I have yet to see a scary american cartoon as well. And no, I wasn't thinking too relatively to american cartoons.
For my taste, seriousness is only a basic basis for scaryness. It alone, no matter how serious, isn't enough. For example Patlabor WXIII was very serious, but not that scary.
The most scariest moment that I have seen in anime was in Patlabor 1 The Movie. It happens when they are in the Arch and the "ghost" of the bad guy is supposedly in the tower. That's the only scary anime moment I have witnessed. Oh yeah, when the Babel virus first starts going haywire, that's also a little nervous.
Might have something to do, as I saw that movie when I was around 15 years-old and quite naive.

Perfect Blue was the scariest anime I ever saw. It was scary at times, but it really wasn't anything that made me have nightmares.
X is scary if you watch it while half asleep.

For scare factor...I would have to say Magnetic Rose. It's in the Memories DVD by Katsuhiro Otomo.

I have yet to see what I'd call a 'scary' anime series. Then again, of the two series we're using to benchmark 'scary', I found The Blair Witch Project to be excellent MST3K material, and Ju-On to be a fun watch. So I guess my 'scary' threshold is a bit higher than average. I've probably seen too many horror movies to be scared by anything audiovisual at this point.
I guess maybe some parts of Blue Gender qualified as 'tense', in brief moments. Urotsukidoji qualified as just, umm, odd in a disturbing, never-need-to-see-it-again sort of way. The latter was more gross than frightening, to be sure.

^ I haven't seen that series, no. But really, this isn't about the stories, it's about the medium. Toons just don't scare me.
I thought about it - the closest I can say I've seen to "nightmarish" (and that's still not remotely scary) might be some scenes from Watership Down. In particular, somce of the scenes featuring the destruction of the Sandalford Warren (the gassing, with the White Blindness) - those were disturbing to watch. I'll toss out an honorable mention for the scenes from the Animatrix - the holocaust imagery where Artificial Life Forms are being bulldozed into pits and machine gunned to death, that sort of thing.
Those are dark, certainly. But I don't find them 'scary'.
Anime has yet to learn how to be really scary... The "sudden-sound" trick is yet to be even used.
There's a scene in Blue Gender that uses a typical horror movie trick very nicely. There's a scene where Yuji and Marlene are stuck on an island of humans where the Blue attack. An orphan that Yuji's befriended tries to run to him from across the courtyard, when a Blue mows this kid in half right in front of Yuji's eyes. It was definitely one of those *gasp in shock* horror movie moments, but mere shock is not 'scary'.

Why bump a thread thats over 2 years old?-_-;
i have heard of one called Mermaid's Flesh. is it good enough to shell out the dough for?
The Mermaid's Saga? The TV series is called Mermaid's Forest, although it contains all the manga stories besides one so I don't know why its called Mermaid's Forest when Forest is just two episodes.
Theres also an older Mermaid's Forest & Mermaid's Scar OVA.
They can be creepy but I don't think they are scary. I really love these horror stories myself.

Um...I don't really know about 'scary', but Vampire Princess Miyu can get pretty creepy and I haven't even seen it all.
Noein can be a bit creepy too because of at least one of the bad guys who is after that girl.
X (TV) is pretty creepy too because of the subject matter/fate-of-the-earth type of plot.
I can't really think if 'scary' one that game me goosebumps though.

Well i dnt knw guys, its not entirely true that animes cant be scary,i guess we just have to knw better...i'm sayin this cuz, some episodes of animes like Jigoku Shojo,Gakko no Kaiden are seriously scary,i mean it..have any1 watched these animes?...though i must say i'm yet to catch a full scale grade-A scary anime..but i can still say,if 'ju-on','Ringu' & 'dark waters' are made into animes they will be darn scary...its not appropriate to say that the 'fear factor' cannot be created in animes...some creators can really accomplish it for the sake of the otakus ;)
.................and oh i must thank Levon...man,ur avies r really worth having...thanks a ton pal..

The anime is based off of a bunch of games, each of them being a story arc. There are 4 "question arcs" and 2 "answer arcs", the 2 answer arcs correspond of the Shion/Mion arc and the Rena arc.

Oh yes Yushire its real nice. You might be right,it might not have been licensed in U.S....
BTW..you will not find it on youtube by typing 'Gakko no Kaiden'...you have to type "Ghost Stories".Actually youtube might not have all the episodes i guess.I wish you could watch the 12th & 14th epsd especially, but then again..not watching it from the begining might leave you clueless, all the episodes are are tight & really arouse pathos..cuz ghosts are not always nasty, but have become what they are as a victim of circumstances. The series all throughout has been 'touching' with emotional elements & not just stupid scary zombies & all...
anyways,the youtube link..

No anime.. was scary, for me. The only thing remotely scary or that made me cringe at all was when Mion and Shion ripped their finger nails off.
Higurashi no naku koro ni was not scary, more less confusing. I'm still befuddled about the storyline but no conclusion has been made if its alien or not..I vote Rika being like some kind of Haruhi like creature. xD

The first arc was scary but after I realized that...
His distrust with his friends is the reason why he kills them even though they didnt do anything to him. He is just delusional psychotic person in the first arc I feel sorry for them right now. :( Mion and Rena wasnt a evil person, SHION IS! But he just bang them with Satoshi's baseball bat many times. They only want to help... I almost cried when Rena is about to bang by Keichii and with open arms she said to Keichii, Believe in me! WAAAH! :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:
